Cities of Light is advertised as a 12 day cruise, an 11 night tour, with 7 nights on the ship, the other nights are in a hotel. The 12th day, the last day, is a travel day, and for those who have to leave the hotel at 5 am, a hell day; but all cruise lines do the same thing. I am sure that most people who have taken this tour have loved it, but for us, and I repeat, for us, this was not the right tour. Long bus rides everywhere, wall to wall tourists so that one can barely walk at the major sites. Also, I could be wrong, but I think that the top deck on the ship was only open/available for 3 days. However, the onboard ship experience, as always, was impeccable. The lowlight of the trip was the departure from the ship in Bamberg. 1 hour ride to Nurnberg, restroom stops, quick tour, quick lunch, and a 3 hour plus bus ride to Prague, then, the chaos and lack of organization by Viking at check in at the Prague Hilton hotel. The highlight of the trip was the 2 day extension in Prague, loved it and recommend it. By the way, we felt that both hotels were very good, but it should be no surprise to anyone that the restaurant prices will be high. Breakfast buffet was excellent, at both hotels and the ship. Finally, having done the Romantic Danube, we feel that the short tours, all nights on board the ship, is the best way to river cruise for us. If we do another river cruise, we would likely do a similar one to Romantic Danube, with stops at cities where you can walk off the ship right into town.
