We picked Avalon among the confusing assortment of river cruise lines because of the pictures of the staterooms and granite bathrooms and we weren't disappointed. We loved the all glass side with the bed, table and chairs facing out for the best view, not that we spent much time in our room! The cruise we took was called "Castles on the Rhine" but the castles were just part of the cruise, a lovely afternoon on the prettiest part of the Rhine. What we really appreciated the most was the crew. They were so gracious and friendly that it made the cruise very personal. This was our first river cruise so this aspect was a nice difference from the ocean cruises we have been on. The food and wine with dinner were excellent and the breakfast and lunch buffets always delicious. There were only 129 guests on board so there are no lines, no rush, just relaxation and the best service we have ever experienced. The included tours were very good and the afternoon extras we chose were also good, all a little heavy on history and light on free time for us. The evening entertainment varied, depending on what local talent was available, but no production numbers like the big ships. The crew talent show was hilarious and there was always dancing in the evenings for the party animals. The cost of a river cruise seems high compared to the ocean cruises we have been on but with everything included like excursions, wine and gratuities, it didn't seem like that much more and no one was trying to sell us anything else on board! We would definitely book Avalon again.

Beautiful, comfortable, and great crew!

Cabin Review

Cabin 305
Very comfortable bed, granite bathroom, and great views from the all glass sliding door wall. The table, chairs, and banquette for two was adequate for two guests for cocktails. The desk and large mirror in the room were handy for the two of us getting ready at the same time.

  • Anne Frank House
We didn't book ahead and that was a mistake. The line was very long, even on a week-day, and the crowd inside was slow from room to room. In spite of this, the experience was moving and extremely informative.

  • Canal Tour
Very interesting tour through the canals with a fabulous and informative guide. We enjoyed seeing the houseboats and the architecture with just the right amount of history.

  • Rijksmuseum
This museum has a number of famous paintings and nice gardens. There was no wait in the afternoon with pre-purchased ticket from the hotel. Personnel were very helpful sending us to the right tram to get back to our hotel.

  • Van Gogh Museum
Good museum but long line even with voucher purchased ahead of time at the hotel. Their system didn't seem terribly organized or they just had more visitors than they could handle. The story of his life was interesting and well-presented.

  • Windmills Driving Tour
The windmills are definitely worth seeing! Set in a beautiful, countryside area, the canals, windmills, animals, buildings, and attractions are not to be missed. Highlights included climbing to the top of a windmill, the cheese making demo and tasting, and the wooden shoe making demo plus ample time to shop. The only downside was having to pay to use the restroom!
