We've sailed Jewel of the Seas before in the Northern Caribbean. The ship was newer then and was to more established ports. We were looking forward to doing the Southern Caribbean with stops on five different islands. While we enjoyed the cruise and the off ship snorkeling, I think RCL is not progressing with the kind of passenger support and activities that I am looking for. The ports were not overly cruise passenger friendly, with most ports being where the ship terminals are. Also I think RCL could do a lot more with passengers that don't want their expensive excursions, but would rather adventure on their own. Once in a port the taxis are unregulated and you're left to negotiate your own fare. You'd think RCL could work with the local authorities on setting some standards. Also, RCL could have provided a list of "to do on your own" ideas for the passengers that don't want the RCL excursions. Finally, I grew tired of the "canned" shopping - the little strip of stores constructed just for the cruise ship passengers. I love the islands but next time I think I'll travel to my favorites (Antigua, Barbados and St Lucia) and skip the cruise - unless RCL shows more care for the non-excursion passengers. I also wanted to play basketball but with all the kids running around it wasn't possible. The only "adult" time was filled with teens, so it wasn't really for adults only. It would be great if RCL had a time where people over 40 could enjoy the court as well.
The cabin smelled like urine when we arrived. Also the drawers (top handle) was dusty, like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Obviously an attention to detail on room maintenance is lacking. On one day the attendant forgot our towels. We called the attendant number only to have the line continually discontent. We called guest services and no one ever showed up with towels. We had to dry off with hand towels. We finally found a cart in the hallway and helped ourselves, but well after we had showered. And having a cart in the hallway right outside our room for the entire cruise was a bit much.
