Sail Date: Jul 2014

Took a cruise from Seward to Vancouver in early July on the Statendam. The ship is a little older than average. It seemed like a lot of things didn't work. One of the lights in our cabin had to fixed, there was a broken faucet in our neighbors room so there there wasn't hot water for a day, There's not many outlets in the room, etc. The front desk for the first two days was busy taking requests for repairs. The ship is in port only for a few hours between disembarkation and embarkation and there is not enough time to check the rooms so the only way they know to fix things is when the guests tell the front desk. The cabin and dining room staff are always attentive. The food is decent in the Lido Room and the Main Dining room. The Main dining room is a much calmer atmosphere then the Lido. No problems with the Open Dining schedule we chose. Doing the laundry yourself is a pain in the butt. Better to wait for the discounted price for their laundry service halfway through the cruise. The elevators always come quickly. The shows are mediocre; definitely not something to take the cruise for. The glaciers are shrinking rapidly and the views from the ship of the tiny remnants of them were disappointing. The National Park Service talks on the glaciers and wildlife were really hokey. I think they get temporary summer Park Service staff who are reading from a script. The ping pong tables were popular. It would be nice if they had pool tables also. Too bad they charge for internet service and it was unclear how the mobile (cell) phone service works with the "Ship at Sea" carrier company. I would have liked to carry a watch on the ship since I put my cell phone away for the trip. My room (B155) had a nice balcony but because of the location, I think, there was a oil smell from one of the engines nearby. We didn't use the balcony very much. Whale watch tour in Juneau was worth it.

Cabin Review

Cabin B155 had a nice balcony but there was a oil smell coming from one of the motors below it. I wouldn't choose this room if possible, especially if it is a warm weather cruise and you will use the balcony a lot.
