Sail Date: Apr 2014

We took the 14-night cruise to the Marquesas, Tuamotos, and the Society Islands and enjoyed every moment of the voyage. The islands are stunningly beautiful, the local communities impressiv ly clean, the inhabitants are gracious, and the sea clear and transparent. On board the ship the service, especially in the cabin and the dining rooms, was superb. The food was excellent and the servers were prepared willingly to accommodate special requests. The Paul Gauguin is a relatively small vessel, with 330 passengers, which enables it to sail to areas, such as the Marquesas, that the average cruise liner cannot reach. The onboard lecturers, on such topics as the culture of the islands and the life of the artist Paul Gauguin, were well-chosen and interesting. Also the entertainmnent, mostly proviided by the on-board hosts and hostesses, the Gauguins and the Gausguines, was highly enjoyable. We would make special mention of the Krew Kapers, put on my the on-board crew members, mostly from the Philippines, which was hilarious.

A wide range of onshore and beach activities are offered, incluidng island tours, archeological expeditons, and snorkeling or scube diving. Our criticism is that it is very difficult to obtain detailed information on these before the trip. One is refrred to the company website, which is not too helpful. One has to call the Paul Gauguin headquarters office and then request someone with a direct knowledge of the itinerary, who preferably has been on the cruise herself. It is not apparent what alternatives there may be when the boat is in port. Also, a number of the local tours seem to be overpriced for what is offered. A knowledge of French is most useful when taking a local island tour as few of the guides speak English.

Cabin Review

We had requested and were given one of the limited number of two-bedroom cabins The cabins are comfortable, but simply furnished and lacking soem amendities. Cabin service was excellent.
