Nice Cruise But Overcrowded At Times

Sail Date: July 2014
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami
My girlfriend and I just returned from a July 5th to 12th cruise to St Marteen, St. Thomas, and Nassau. First, I must say this is an absolutely beautiful ship. It was immaculate and the lay out is amazing. We had a balcony room, and it had plenty of space for both of us. The views from the 11th floor were breathtaking. The balcony was average size, and if you want a larger balcony make sure to book a cabin on the 8th or 9th floor. The bathroom was large for a cruise, and the bed was comfortable. The cabin has a flat screen television with about 15 tv channels, but it also serves as a way to book events, dinner, excursions, etc. In addition, you can immediately access your account to review your purchases.

Entering/Exiting: Getting on and off the cruise is easy. I recommend carrying your own bags when you exit, and you will be off the boat by 730 am.

Food: Overall, the food was very good. The buffet had a large variety, and for the most part the food was tasty. There More were a few misses, but overall we were very pleased with the food. The busiest time for the buffet was between 930 am and 10:30 am. This is the only time we had difficulty finding a place to eat. The three free restaurants all serve the same food, and it would have been nice to have a little more variety between them. The free style dining is great, and you can show up any time you want.

Specialty Restaurants: The food at the Specialty Restaurants was very good. We dined at Moderno, Le Bistro, and La Cucina. If you have a healthy appetite please give Moderno a try. Also, the rib eye at La Cucina is much better than the one at Cagney's. My only criticism of the Specialty Restaurants is the booking. We saw that Moderno was completely booked, but when we approached the staff we were immediately seated without a reservation. We watched customers be turned away, yet there were many empty tables.

Gym: The fitness center was very important to us. Although it was nice, it was extremely crowded and small. They should have tripled the size of the gym, and made it 24 hours. It is only slightly larger than ships that accommodate less than 2000 people.

On Board Activities - The ropes course and water slides were awesome. The main issue with the activities is the short hours they are open each day. The water slides were open 10a to 6 p, but the ropes course was only open 3 hours or so per day. Also, the rock climbing was open 3 hours a day and was way too crowded for us to participate. They should open these more during the day to accommodate everyone.

Ports: St. Marteen was a little downtrodden. We did the Orient Beach Rendevous, and were able to see most of the island. This beach was amazing, and lunch came with the excursion. I highly recommend this destination.

St. Thomas was absolutely beautiful. I wish we were at this port longer than 8:30 to 330. We did Capt Nautical Snorkeling, and were we somewhat disappointed. At 80 dollars a person, it was rather steep for what we got. The boat sailed only three miles to the snorkeling grounds, and there were many boats. We only saw 2 turtles, and the reefs were more or less just rock piles with fish. We had to keep swimming away from the hoards of boats that were coming in. I recommend an island or beach tour at St Thomas.

Nassau is a dangerous and dirty port. I do not recommend even getting off the boat at this port. Please read the crime reviews on this port.

Service: For the most part, the service was excellent. We encountered a few disgruntled waiters, but overall most employees were nice. Our steward was great, and he took good care of us.

Entertainment: Burn the Floor and Legally Blonde were nice, but you had to make reservations for them. We arrived early, and had great seats. The comedians were great, and Rodney Laney was fantastic. We wish they had an adults only show, because there were many children. Also, you could only register for one comedy performer, even though they performed many times throughout the week. NCL should have had a few more shows or performers throughout the week.

Cruise Director: The cruise director was good, but we rarely saw him. I went on the Sky a few months ago and the Cruise Director was everywhere.

Vibe Beach Club: This was 80 dollars a person, but well worth it. They only sell 80 of them. We had padded beach chairs, umbrellas, and two hot tubs. There were no children, and it was nice and quiet. We would return at 10 pm, and had the hot tubs to ourselves.

Obnoxious People: If you cruised before, you know that there are many obnoxious people. They cut in line, don't make room when you walk, etc. There were plenty on this ship, but it occurs on every cruise.

Overall, we had a nice time. The food was plentiful, and the ship is beautiful. As long as you learn how to navigate away from the crowds, you will enjoy yourself. Just realize that you will be competing with 4000 plus cruisers for the finite activities. Less
