Pleasantly surprised by Carnival Spirit.

Sail Date: June 2014
Destination: South Pacific
Embarkation: Sydney (Australia)
Taking a last minute cruise at a reduced price can be fraught with danger, but in this case it was well worth the risk.

We have been on several Princess Cruises, but also Holland America, Celebrity and P & O, so we were looking forward to a new experience with Carnival.

While it was vastly different to previous cruises, that was not necessarily a bad thing.

We had been given late dining, because we booked so late. On the first day we asked if we could be changed to early or anytime dining. We were told that both were full, but they would see what they could do. Overnight, a note was slipped under the door advising that we had been changed to early dining.

We were seated with a family from Melbourne with 2 small children. While dinner time may have been noisy, we are grandparents and know how it works. By the end of the cruise we had almost been adopted.

We found the food in the Dining Room very good. We had the most amazing waiter More (Aaron) and nothing was too much trouble. We chose to eat in the Dining Room every night so as to avoid the temptation of the buffet.

The cabin ( Balcony) compared favorably with previous cruises and the cabin steward was rarely seen.

The price of drinks may have been a little higher than other cruises, but there was no 15% surcharge, so they were cheaper in most cases.

The entertainment was good, if maybe a little loud. There was a good variety of shows, some better than others.

The whole idea of this cruise was to get away for 10 days for some R & R, and it worked perfectly for us. If we get another crazy price offer we'd probably do it again. Less

Good spot, near the lifts and stairs. Just the right distance to go up to the Lido deck or down to the Restaurant via the stairs.

Port and Shore Excursions

Noumea Aquarium

We arrived in Noumea on a Sunday and wanted to go to the Aquarium. I was told by the Shore Excursion staff that the Aquarium closed on Sundays and only opened for the Cruise Tours. This was not the case and I was not happy. As a result we had a rushed visit through the Aquarium which was disappointing. We plan to go back on our own next time.
