Norwegian Gem Cruise Review by caribbeancruising5
- Sail Date: March 2014
- Destination: Eastern Caribbean
We left out of NY- we drove there from Long Island it took us about 45 mins. We were at the port a about 10am and on the ship by 12pm- that fast! We were on the balcony of our room by 1pm and out to the buffet by 1:30!!
The food was spectacular- most nights we ate at the MDR's which are amazing and a couple at the Garden Café. One night we ate at Cagneys and is was the best steak any of us have ever had.
The first day was a little chilly but we were wearing jeans and a tshirt with flip flops so it was around 65 degrees out. We walked around exploring the beautiful ship and taking in the breathtaking views. The next sea day it was 80 degrees and we were out by the pool!! We love that there was 2 sea days before and after the ports so you had time to relax before and after.
We had 2 rooms- a balcony and an inside. They were beautiful and the beds were extremely comfortable. The shower was really big and it had a glass door, not a curtain. We got room service every morning to start off the day before heading down to the café.
Let me tell you- the shows on this ship are out of this world! Between the Broadway plays, and all of the other shows- they are amazing! Our favorite was the acrobatic group Dizzy and Jana they were excellent. We also absolutely loved Kenosis in the Observaton Lounge- they did a Whiney Houston and Tina Turner tribute it was spectacular. The lead singer sounded EXACTLY like them!!! If you closed your eyes you would think it was Whitney reincarnated- it was bonechilling that's how amazing it was.
The staff is the friendliest staff in the world they are amazing!- Sinan, the cruise director which I heard is now on the Breakaway was the funniest and nicest guy ever!! We loved him! He was everywhere on the ship and that is a quality only the best cruise directors have.
We had an amazing time. The Gem is truly beautiful and I hope you have the same experience we had. You will love it!! Once you get bit by the cruising bug- you never go back! You are always thinking about cruising!!

Beach EscapeWe loved Cayo Levantado!! We booked the excursion through NCL because we knew that the closest really nice beach in the Samana area was about 45 mins away. We were tendered to the small island and it took about 15 mins and the views of the ship from down in the small boat was amazing and also the beautiful Dominican mountain views. The beach at Cayo was spectacular! Turqouise water with breathtaking snorkeling. There was a volleyball court which we enjoyed and a great beach bar. There was some shopping huts with coffee, arts, handmade jewelry, and all Dominican made items. It was an amazing day!!View All 10 Beach Escape Reviews
San JuanSan Juan is amazing! This was our first port and we got there at about 12pm (early-scheduled at 3). If you are going to this port I recommend booking a room on the port (left) side of the ship- get your camera ready you will see the amazing Old San Juan Fort and it feels like it is 2 feet from you it is an amazing experience. If you have an inside or a room on the Starboard go out on to the pool deck or the promenade or the many other outside decks with a 365 degree view. From the port we took a cab to Isla Verde Beach- it took about 10 mins to get there and the cab driver showed up promptly to pick us up. The beach is beautiful and lined with palm trees. The water not deep and not rough at all. If you walk down the beach down to the Intercontinental Resort there is a beach bar there where you can get really good Spanish food. After the beach we went to the town in Old San Juan where we walked around the cobblestone town constructed 1000s of years ago. There is so much beautiful history there it is amazing. We had an amazing time!!View All 3,768 San Juan Cruise Port Reviews

St. ThomasWe absolutely loved St Thomas. We were docked at Havensight (the big terminal) where we walked around the shops and then we were off to Coki Beach. It took us about 25 mins to get there but the ride is amazing with a breathtaking view around every turn. The beach is really beautiful and the people are really nice and try to help with whatever you need. The water is a beautiful turquoise and it had amazing views!View All 4,650 St. Thomas Cruise Port Reviews
