Just returned from a 5-night cruise on the Celebrity Constellation to the Western Caribbean, with (planned) stops in Key West, FL and Cozumel, Mexico. All seemed to be going well until our first stop in Key West (on the first full day of our cruise). When it came time to leave, the Captain announced that there was a "minor" problem with the ship's propulsion system, and that our departure would be delayed a few hours... we would leave at 10:00 PM rather than the scheduled 7:00 PM. We never left at 10:00 PM, and the next morning it was announced that the problem was still not fixed and that we would stay in Key West another day, departing at 12:00 midnight (waiting for a "part" to arrive). A late night "sail away" pool party was even scheduled. Still no departure at midnight... we were still tied up to the dock in Key West at 7:00 AM on the THIRD day. It was then announced that the problem was repaired (by replacing the entire gas turbine engine.. we watched them truck it in), but that we would now Not be going to Cozumel but to (crappy) Nassau in the Bahamas instead... no doubt so that Celebrity could avoid the heft Jones Act fines if they did not go to SOME foreign port.
Although the service, facilities and dining on the Constellation are quite good, sitting tied up at the dock for three days of a five day cruise and then missing the featured port of the cruise is a real bust. Celebrity seems to be snakebit with regard their mechanical systems (try searching on "Celebrity" and "mechanical problems"), and in this case they refused to make any accommodations or offer any compensation to us as passengers. I'd have to give serious thought to trusting Celebrity with my vacation time again.
