We just returned from a 15 night cruise from San Diego to Fort Lauderdale on Royal Caribbean's Legend of the Seas. The tours at our stops were great and quite informative. The trip through the canal was just incredible, going through three sets of locks. The first set on the Pacific side consisted of two sets of two locks. In the middle of the canal there was another set of two locks and finally on the Atlantic side at the east end of Gatun Lake there is two sets of three locks. An inspiring trip, great engineering to be viewed. You can also see where the construction of the new, much larger locks are being constructed.

The Legend of the Seas was a big disappointment to us. We have sailed exclusively with Royal Caribbean and are dismayed that this ship did not meet our expectations. We had a junior suite with a balcony which was very nice and great for viewing the locks. Our disappointment was in the level of service on this vessel. We had ordered a dozen bottles of orange juice for our stateroom. Upon arrival the juice was not there. Our attendant told us that someone forgot to order the juice. We asked for ice to be delivered twice a day and it took two days before we got our first bucket of ice. There was a coffee pot and we asked for coffee and creamers and sugar. We had to speak to the attendant's supervisor and he assured us that we would get our juice and ice and coffee. We got the ice and coffee but no juice. He also told us that someone forgot to order it. We got apple juice instead. We spoke with guest services and with the head of the hotel portion of the ship and he said he would get back to us on the complaints. We never heard from him again. We were travelling with two other couples and had our dining reservations tied together so that we would be sitting at the same table. Upon check in we were seated at another table. I checked with the dining scheduler and he said he could not change it. After some complaining we finally got seated with our friends. This should never have happened and the word "no" should not be uttered to a guest who has paid over ten grand for a cruise.

This is the first time that Royal Caribbean has not met our expectations. The ship's staff for the most part were great, however, there were a few who were surely and some who were incompetent. Our waiter was great and funny but on the first night he had no assistant and was harried and rushed trying to take care of his tables serving food, water and other beverages. He finally got an assistant and the remaining meals were great.

Cabin Review

Suite was great, clean, and had a great balcony for watching the locks as we went through them. The suite's air conditioning was anemic at best and actually stopped several times and we sweltered in the heat and humidity until they got it going again. It never really cooled the room. The toilet stopped working several times and had to have someone attend to that problem over and over again. We were also disappointed in that there was only one plug for our electronics. I don't know what Royal Caribbean was thinking in this design.
