A superb first cruise

Sail Date: September 2013
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Other
My wife and I had never been on a cruise before and we wondered how well we would take to it. Well, in a nutshell, this cruise exceeded all our expectations by a royal mile. The proof of the pudding is that we booked our next cruise while still on-board the Century: Panama Canal 15 nights aboard the Celebrity Infinity.

The first thing to note is that we found the embarkation and disembarkation process was very well managed indeed - we were very impressed. Very efficient and stress free.

Despite being commissioned in 1995, Century is in excellent shape. We saw no signs of tired décor or threadbare furnishings or stained carpets as other cruisers have noted with other cruise lines / ships, especially with one particular upmarket cruise line. There was a hiccup with our toilet flush but that was about all. Our suite, the lounges and restaurants, and the outside decks and pool area were superbly maintained.

Because we booked a Sky Suite, we had no trouble More at all finding space to unpack our clothes and hide our suitcases away out of view. All we had to do was ask for a few more hangers, which our lovely butler Ram brought straight to our room. If anything wasn't quite right or we needed something, it got fixed right away - nothing was too much trouble.

The service level was fantastic, without exception, and special thanks go to our brilliant butler Ram, our efficient and friendly room attendants Luna and Anak, our superb evening dinner servers Filroy and Joseph and Komang, delightful washroom attendant Merlin, and Denny and Clint the lovely bartenders at the Rendez Vous bar/lounge. The cruise director Ben was an absolute star also. He was so committed, energetic and enthusiastic. He made it his job to circulate with the guests and always had a moment to spare for a quick chat or to receive a compliment. Even after working all day, Ben would be up on stage compering the entertainment acts in the late evening, as fresh as a daisy. Impressive.

We breakfasted and lunched in the ship's Islands Café and took dinner in The Grand Dining Room. Choice for breakfast and lunch was mind boggling and was good quality. Evening dinner was exceptional quality and we were very impressed with every single evening meal that was served up to us. There was also a special gala lunch buffet, which was visually stunning (fruit carvings and ice carvings plus special spotlighting) and offered a fabulous choice of food, all of which looked delicious to eat.

We had heard that the evening entertainment can be good on a cruise ship and it certainly was on the Century. We were treated to slick cabaret acts, some excellent stand up entertainers and a couple of tribute bands who paid homage to The Eagles and The Beatles. Both were excellent and the latter had the whole audience standing up, clapping and dancing - they were so popular that they performed an extra slot on our last night.

The daytime activity programme was extensive and had something for everyone - very good indeed.

It would be a back-handed compliment to say that we saw no weaknesses in the cruise experience - all we saw and experienced were strengths - we had a fantastic time. Thank you Celebrity, and all the brilliant staff aboard the Century!!!!!! Less
