Our family just returned last night from our 7 day vacation on Rhapsody. Both my husband and I are in our late 30's. We have two boys ages 14 and 8. Overall, we had a good time. This is our 2nd time sailing on Rhapsody. Our last trip was in September 2003. The first night we had very rough seas in the Gulf. Many people felt sea sick, including myself. I spent much of the first day in bed in the cabin. Friends we traveled with said that Dramamine worked for them, but I wasn't sure how it would interact with other meds that I take, so I just lived with it. We felt a lot of movement and some moaning and groaning of the ship until we entered Caribbean waters. From then on, the weather was perfect, my sea sickness disappeared, and life was good! Regarding the ship: it is older, but charming. RC has made some updates since we sailed in 2003. Our cabin was small, but clean. The bathroom although very clean, had a strange urine-type smell. You may want to bring some type of air freshener if you are sensitive to smells. We had two large portholes/windows that were nice, but not clean on the outside. Regarding the food: For the most part it tasted like cafeteria food to me. I am probably more picky than most people. The kids loved the food, the Windjammer Buffet, and the Dining room. We ate in the Dining Room almost every evening. The dining room service was not quite as good as in 2003, but the staff were very friendly. They seemed a bit overwhelmed/understaffed at dinner. All of the steaks we ordered in the dining room were above average, and I enjoyed the pre-made turkey baguette sandwiches at the Buffet. Tip: Bring your own soda and bottled water in a rolling suitcase. After you have finished all the drinks, you can use the extra suitcase for souvenirs. We have really good water at home, and the ship's water tastes a bit strange. We spent an extraordinary amount on water and soda while we were on board. We could have bought soda cards, but we don't like to encourage our kids to drink a lot of sugar. Plus, the bar service was really slow for people wanting soda with a soda card. Also cups and ice are readily available outside of the Windjammer. Regarding the entertainment: We enjoyed all of the activities and entertainment. We were disappointed with the Disco because it closes at 2am, even in International waters. The ship is very quiet past this time. Regarding the Ocean Adventure Club: Our 8 year old loved it, and we felt safe leaving him there for a few hours at a time. Lots to do, and the staff is great. The 14 year old found friends on board to hang out with and we brought along walkie talkies so we could keep in touch with him. Tip: Relax, participate in the activities, and attend the formal nights. We did so much more on the ship this time, and feel like we had a fun cruise experience. Regarding Ochos Rios Jamaica: Absolutely beautiful, but not very safe due to drugs, poverty, and corruption. Make sure to book excursions with a reputable company, and stay alert while you are there. We were offered Marijuana twice while we were there. Tip: Marijuana IS illegal in Jamaica, and a foreign jail is a really bad place to spend you vacation! Regarding Grand Cayman: Much safer, great snorkeling, and large friendly Sting Rays. Regarding Cozumel: Avoid RC's Unlimited Snorkel Tour. It is very short, and you have to walk to the site (which is not mentioned in the description, and it's very hot). The tour was rushed and we didn't see very much. Apply your $ to one of the better tours. After the tour, we paid $10.50 usd to the El Cid Hotel and $6.00 usd to rent snorkel equipment (on the Hotel's Beach), and snorkeled on the hotel's beach which was very nice. Included was use of the pool, bathrooms, and showers. For $35.00 + snorkel rental you can get unlimited food and drinks in addition to use of the facility. The El Cid is directly across from where the ship docks. Even better yet, bring your own snorkel gear, as most of the equipment we rented was not as good as out own stuff. Beware: of the cruise hangover! Both my husband and I feel a little off balance and out of it as our sea legs adjust to land again. If you can, give yourself a day after your trip to readjust in case you are like us. The kids, unlike us, are fine and have had no trouble with this adjustment.
