Sapphire Princess Cruise Review by mrfviews
- Sail Date: March 2013
- Destination: Hawaii
- Cabin Type: Balcony
This was our 8th cruise all on Princess, we're "escaping again completely"! We met our daughter & sister at some awesome cousins after our 6 hr. drive from St. George,Ut. a nice easy drive until we hit the L.A. traffic, yuk ! They flew in from Portland & Providence the day before we arrived in L.A. Had a nice dinner & visit the night before with family, thanks Mary & Bill B.! They drove us 1 hr. to the cruise port after a very nice lodging at their beautiful home. We arrived around noon, and after an quick easy check in, had to wait about 75 minutes until our group number was called apx. 1:15.The ship looked pretty nice since it's upgrade last year, we sailed to Mexico on her back in May 2010.Our balcony railing (wood) was looking pretty shotty, time for some sanding & varnish! We met Joey our efficient room steward and asked for more hangers and egg crates, you will need both ! Our room mid-ship on deck 11 Baja near the always crowded & slow elevators was in a very good locale. Our room measured only 9X20' smaller than we can ever remember 180 sq. ft. Oh well, too much going on outside, so showering & sleeping is about all we did inside. Food was hit & miss, but the service was always excellent. I will say if your a "vegetarian" not a lot of selection in the dining rooms. Tri tip roast, shrimp, and Lobster the final formal night were great! Deserts not so hot for the most part. Selections and quality may have dropped a tad here. Michael in the Santa Fe was incredible ! We ate half the time in the always crowded Hor. Ct. buffet, often hard to get a table inside, especially for breakfast, just not enough tables! Entertainment was good some commedians better than others. Loved the "Walk like a Man" tribute show to the "Jersey Boys", and Mack Dryden, Billy our C.D.David Aikers, Kuba Kawnick, Lorenzo Clark, and the best, new production show "Born to be Wild". The Princess singers were okay especially the ladies the guys, so, so, in fact the passengers on "Princess Pop Star"(karaoke)were just as good. Thanks to all my singing buddies Helen,Gary,Cesar,& Val, me too (Monty). The Princess dancers were all very good, they have been together for 17 mo. and moving to the Diamond Princess soon. The house band was really good too "New Deal" could play anything & well! We loved the talents of Jake & Melissa especially. There is so much to see & do, you really need a daily "road map" referring to the Princess Patter, don't leave your room without it! Bingo, games bar wars, pool games, lectures, art shows, movies, trivia ice & vegetable carvings, and not to be forgotten ukelele classes with David. Our daughter Megan really enjoyed them and their concert in the piazza, along with Alex's group the Pop Choir, so nice.Cocktails getting awfully pricey avg. $9 so look for the bar specials after 8pm on certain drinks, $5. Wish we would have known earlier, don't ask, don't get?We got to know Billy's C.D. staff pretty well, we enjoyed all of them especially Colette, Alex, David, Melissa, Adam & crazy Martin, thanks guys! The "deck" party was a lot of fun along with the crew talent show 7 all those balloons. Billy was great as "Topol", probably the most talented person on the ship and for being in his 60's like the majority of passengers a real delight! Let me say no cruise is absolutely perfect, but the crew tries awfully hard to make it that way, just go with the flow is the best concept I suppose. Our biggest beef with the ship was all day long the TV M>U>T>S> was running half the passengers paying no attention to it,just noise by the main pool. Where's the band, no music at the island "sailaways", nothing, just movies & and out dated concerts from the 80's.Play the movies at night under the stars the way it was intended, not under the sun, or in this case mostly over cast grey skies, just sayin! If I want to watch TV or a movie I'll do it at home, not on a cruise, exception, later at night. All in all another great vacation cruise with true value!@ Can't wait to sail on the new mega-ship Royal Princess Nov. 3 "ALOHA" and Happy Sailing !!!

Our balcony cabin on deck 11 Baja # 528 Plenty big enough for 3 people. Four is pushing it as it was only apx. 180 sq. ft. 9 'X 20' Railing (wood) was in dire straits for sanding & varnishing the rest of the room was pretty nice, flat screen TV etc. We had a shower not drain and 1 toilet clog but they were quick to repair. Never heard our neighbors, quiet room despite loud toilet flushes. We were close to stairs and elevator mid-ship convienient.

Brief stop in Mexico due to maritime law. The sun finally came out as we approached the coastline after a rough night at sea. We met up with our Phoenix gals and walked into town with peddlers and small children trying to sell us everything under the sun. I must have given out 10/15 dollar bills to the the little one's saying no gracias everywhere we went, including the "place" everyone goes to "Pappas & Beer". We had a watered down $8 margarita, should have ordered a Pacifico, but it was fun sitting outside listening to some actual "music" rock n roll and no TV / M>U.T.S.

Hilo this port is not so pretty, looked more like a industrial park. No shops or bars close by, town just too far away to walk. Sure wish they would stop in Kona, much nicer and everything (town) is right there, we like it much better, although it is a "tender" port. We took a cab to Richardson (black) beach did some snorkeling and saw several pretty fish varieties. It started raining about 2:30 like we new it would, but enjoyed the beach earlier.

Our tour covered several mainstays, we had a nice driver knowledgeable and a good singer. Sure wish we could have "snorkeled" @ Hanuamu Bay, so cool ! Great photo stops and it only took 3 1/2 hrs. Had a real delay disaster at Hilo Haties in town. Waisted 90 min. waiting for their shuttles that were supposed to come by every 20 min. and take us to Waikiki, NOT !Finally got to the beach at 2:30 overcast, breezy & 68, not a good beach day even in Hawaii, nuts ! Off to the Int'nl. Marketplace for some shopping and then back to the ship by 5pm. Aloha Tower shops feeling the economic downturn most shops closed and out of business, sad.

Loved cruising up the Wailua River to some great Hawaiian songs and dances, beautiful setting, staff on the boat very cordial ! Unfortunately the main path up to the cave "FERN GROTTO" has been shut off and you don't get that close to it anymore, sad! Just not the same, but enjoyed the staff of 3 sing the beautiful Hawaiian Wedding Song ...

Although Lahaina Maui is a tender, we had our best overall time there. The weather was great the best of the entire cruise, 80 & sunny. Walked over to "Baby's Beach" 15 min. left of town. Well worth the effort, great protected cove, clear warm water but not too many fish. I swam 100 yards out in only 5 ft. of water, but only saw 3 varieties, about a 15/20 fish, but great beach and views of the ship & coastline. Walked around the bustling town, shopped and had a great Hawaiian (local) beer there.
