Norwegian Sun Cruise Review by BlueJai
- Sail Date: February 2013
- Destination: Southern Caribbean
- Cabin Type: Mid-Ship Balcony
We have been on the Sun 6 times so coming on the ship is like coming home! I was so surprised just how many of the staff and crew that we had met last year were still there. It made for an amazing embarkation day.
The rooms were ready by 1:00 and when we went to our room to get ready for the muster drill, our suitcases had already been delivered! Awesome! The rooms are larger on the Sun than on other NCL ships and they have lots and lots of storage.
Seven Seas -- We ate there twice on our trip. Both meals were excellent, as was the service. We really enjoyed the lobster on embarkation day!
We had a balcony cabin on Deck 10 - 0001. Great room and great location.
We used room service every morning for coffee and it was delivered perfectly every morning. We ate breakfast every morning outside at the Great Outdoors. The buffet area at the back of the ship was well run, organized and efficient.
We had joined the roll call so we headed to the meeting which was being held in Las Ramblas. Most of the officers were there with the exception of the Captain. They all introduced themselves, then at the end, Steven Jacobson, the Hotel Director said they had a special guest - and introduced Kevin Sheehan. This was really exciting for all in the room, and we really couldn't believe it. He spoke for a few minutes to the group and even took some Q&A.
Most lunches were spent enjoying either the BBQ on the pool deck, or the food in Moderno. Both were always well set up, the food was good and service was good.
Four Seasons -- We ate there twice throughout the cruise and the food and service was excellent.
Moderno -- We went there twice during the cruise. Dinner lasted about two and a half hours and was really enjoyable both times. The service was great, and those delivering the meat (can't remember their proper name) were fun and entertaining.
NCL Cartagena Tour -- Carriage Ride through the old city. Excellent Tour!
Il Adagio -- we ate here twice throughout the cruise. The Carbonara was amazing as was the chicken parmagian and shrimp risotto. The bread with the infused oil was really good. We enjoyed great service and the room has a nice ambiance to it.
Terrance B. -- Hypnotist - was a really good show. We had never been to see a Hypnotist before and it was a great show. Terrance B. offers seminars later in the week - one for weight loss, one for insomnia and another for stress.
Dining Under the Stars - On the Sun they are doing something new - I think they have done it 2 or 3 times now. It is called 'Dinner under the Stars' and they do a big Caribbean buffet/BBQ on Deck 11. They set out extra tables all over the pool deck and all the tables are set up nicely with placemats. I can't remember what time they started serving but I think it went to 8:00ish. The food was excellent and it was a really nice change of pace.
Le Bistro - one of our favourite restaurants. I have been dreaming of the mushroom soup for months! Between the 4 of us, we had escargot (delicious), mushroom soup (Amazing!), beef tenderloin (fabulous), and the chicken (awesome). The entire meal was so good and the service was wonderful.
Teppanyaki -- make your reservations early. There were only 8 of us but the show and the food were incredible.
Dazzles -- spent many evenings here and enjoyed outstanding service from the bar servers.
Being on board for 11 days really gives you a chance to experience great service over and over again. I know those of you who have been on the Sun would agree, the staff and crew are amazing.
The ship is lovely, the staff and crew are amazing, other than one meal we didn't love, the food was excellent, the bar servers were on top of things, all the waiters/waitresses were friendly, room steward was great. All the public areas were lovely and the itinerary was perfect.
The staff and crew take such good care of you on the Sun, I can't emphasize that enough. Regardless of where we were or what we were doing (or not doing!), we were treated amazingly.
Port & Shore Excursion Reviews
Horse Carriage TourThe tour operator had a gentleman on board - William - who gave us a commentary while on the bus as to what we were seeing as we drove through town. He was very informative, and was open to answering questions. So, a bit of a drive through the city and we entered the old city for our carriage ride. There were 4 to each carriage and soon we were on our tour of the old city. It was an amazing way to see it.View All 24 Horse Carriage Tour Reviews
William stayed with the carriage ride, often moving up and down the line to explain things we were seeing. The ride through the town was awesome, it was a nice pace that allowed us to take in all the sights and the beauty of the buildings. Going up and down the streets and seeing the rennovated buildings and the older ones, churches, hotels etc was really beautiful.
After the carriage ride, we stopped at a shopping area within the walled city for about 30 minutes. The buses were waiting for us in the shopping area so you can go back when you are ready. A nice touch is that they had cold water for us upon returning. The trip back was another tour outside of the walled city and again, William gave a great narrative. Once we got back to the port, some asked to get off at the terminal building and the driver stopped to let them off, and for the rest of us, we were taken right back to the ship. Awesome!
