What a disappointing cruise! While the ports were interesting, the cabin sufficiently spacious enough to accommodate my husband, myself and our two teenage daughters and the sun plentiful, I was extremely disappointed by the attitude and service of the staff in general. Our main waiter had an incredibly poor command of English and I did not speak the language spoken in the Philippines. He was often argumentative. When I asked him to get the maitre d' to resolve a problem we had, he refused. We found the bartender in the jazz lounge to be equally frustrating -- he would argue with us about our drink choices and gave us a price that was off by $100 when we attempted to order a bottle of champagne for New Year's Eve. We are quiet, polite people and would wait patiently for someone to assist us; this is a cruise line where it pays to be the squeaky wheel.
The entertainment was significantly lacking as well. The piano bar and the guitarist on board were, at best, lacking in talent. The bright, shining moment, however, was the jazz trio that played (thankfully) most every night. I would pay money to hear the bass player -- he is a definite rising star! If you are of the game show mentality, you'll do fine with the activities on board -- they are all loud and rather obnoxious. If you enjoy good steak, do not order it on board anywhere except the Supper Club and even then, if you are used to eating at excellent steakhouses (like Morton's or Ruth Chris), you'll be disappointed. If you are a "foodie", be exactly that on this cruise -- choose the obscure food item: those were the most interesting. They did manage to keep the buffet in the Lido moving along nicely enough, but then I stuck to croissants and fruits for breakfast and salads or the Asian food for lunch.
I do recommend the Five Star Catamaran excursion in Barbados; lovely boat and very nice staff. Not as many fish as I've seen in other locations, but the sailing was wonderful. There didn't seem like there was enough time in other ports and it was definitely not a great idea to be in Martinique on New Year's Day (or any Sunday, from what I understand). Martinique IS a lovely island though and worth touring.
