Star Princess Cruise Review by gogogranny
- Sail Date: December 2012
- Destination: South America
Santa's visit for the children on Christmas morning was an added treat for them as well as games, face painting etc. for the kids (200 of them !) The gingerbread house decorating contest was amazing....what talented and creative people !
WE had absolute SMOOOOOOTH sailing for the first 10 days....like a lake! Next couple of weeks had some "rock and rollin' " for sure. The ports of call were a delight for the most part. The Princess tours were VERY expensive and not always rated correctly as far as E--M--S. For those with mobility problems that can be and WAS an issue where excessive walking was required on what was rated E. We saw some magnificent sights...especially "Glacier Alley"...the Beagle Channel from the Skywalker's lounge. That morning was worth the cost of the entire trip! Some of the ports were rainy or heavily clouded obscuring the view of the volcanoes etc...which is a shame....but can't be helped...nature is nature. We were blessed beyond measure to have a calm sea and SUN the morning we rounded Cape Horn...something the port expert, Joe May said he had NEVER seen in his 120 trips around the Cape.
The ship food was outstanding...except for the temperature of some hot foods up in Horizon court....too tepid for fowl dishes. The entertainment was just OK....nothing to rave about....some really good....some pretty awful...some just mediocre. We happened to have a very uncaring substandard cabin steward...which is not our usual experience. Was disappointed in his performance...and we are NOT demanding kinds of passenger.
I was disappointed in the service of the photo dept. as well. At several ports they were not out taking photos as usual.
The service in the anytime dining room was usually painfully slow...almost always had to figure on a 2 hour dinner at a table for 6....not good !
There also needs to be a better informed shore excursion office and better communication skills. Overall.....I would give this cruise an 8 out of 10. WE thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, met some lovely people, ate some wonderful meals saw some awesome sights and had several truly relaxing "at sea" days.

Buenos AiresWE had a debark tour in Buenos Aires through Princess. The city tour was great followed by a wonderful lunch in a downtown restaurant with a 1 1/2 hour Tango show. The show was well performed...but a bit long. An hour show would have been enough. We were then taken to the airport.View All 197 Buenos Aires Cruise Port Reviews

Puerto MonttThe weather was awful the day we were there...raining and VERY windy. It was a tender port and the ramp from the tender up to the terminal was very steep. It was metal with NO traction mats or tape. I fell as I got to the top...luckily I wasn't seriously injured...but I COULD have been. The purser's office of the ship showed little concern over this and said they had no authority of the port's choice of ramp or equipment. Because of the weather our sights were not the best. There were almost hurricane force winds at the falls......the huge lake would have been a beautiful sight in the sun but was gray and uninviting. We DID have a marvelous meal at a lovely hotel on the lake and enjoyed about an hour of free time for shopping etc. In good weather this would be an outstanding port.View All 134 Puerto Montt Cruise Port Reviews

River Cruise & Scarlet Macaw SanctuaryWE enjoyed the Macaw sanctuary despite the extreme heat and humidity....which is normal for there. The Mangrove river cruise was just so so. We have been on other river cruises in Costa Rica that were much better and saw a lot more wildlife than this one. Our guide was very proud of her country...very knowledgeable and spoke very good English. WAY too much $$$$$ for what was offered.View All 13 River Cruise & Scarlet Macaw Sanctuary Reviews
Santiago (Valparaiso)The port of Valpariso was a very busy place. We took a city tour which took us to several different parts of the city. We saw lovely sights in Miraflores.View All 100 Santiago (Valparaiso) Cruise Port Reviews

We didn't take a tour. WE walked down to the Christ Cathedral for awhile and did a bit of shopping. It was a stark, bleak place with absolutely NO appeal whatsoever!

UshuaiaIt was heavily overcast all day in Ushuaia but that didn't deter us from the awesome beauty of the majestic snow covered mountains surrounding the city. We took a tour out to the "end of the earth"....in Tierra del Fuego National Park which was heavily forested...beautiful. Would LOVE to see this place in the sun....it must be absolutely stunning !View All 179 Ushuaia Cruise Port Reviews
