Back from Alaska

Sail Date: September 2012
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Vancouver
We just returned to Alberta from our very first cruise.

We boarded the Celebrity Century in Vancouver,BC for a 9-night Alaskan cruise.

Reading prior reviews showed that passengers seemed to like or dislike the ship with few in middle ground. My wife and I loved the ship. It has an old-school charm that we found comforting and more than enough amenities to see us through the days at sea.

Embarkation was smooth, efficient and straight-forward.

The crew of the Century represented 50 countries and I cannot say enough about them. They are hard-working professionals yet friendly enough to greet us each and every time we encountered them. The service(s) provided on the Century were truly second to none!

Our navigational crew were personable and the Captain had a great sense of humor. He is a 19-year veteran with Celebrity and took his role very seriously. He got the Century closer to the Hubbard Glacier than it had ever been.

Our Cabin More Steward (Rodim) and his assistant (Agoste) deserve special mention for the great job they did of keeping our cabin spotless and seeing to our every need. Many nights we returned, from dining, to animals made from our towels and/or face cloths. Certainly not necessary but a nice touch all the same.

We attended several shows in the theater, all of which were excellent. Band Artistique was tremendous!

While I found the food in the Island Cafe (buffet and burger bar) mediocre at best, the same cannot be said for the food in the main dining room. Each meal was delicious and appealed to the eye upon arrival at the table.

Our Head Waiter (Raymond) and Assistant Waiter (Melvin) did a tremendous job and deserve special mention as well.

Dealings with Guest Services were handled pleasantly and efficiently. In fact, after launching a noise complaint (the cabin above ours) the matter was resolved by a Supervisor and we received a fruit basket, bottle of wine and Alaska DVD compliments of Celebrity.

We also had many entertaining conversations with Albert Montalban (buffet supervisor) of the Phillipines. He has a terrific personality and sense of humor.

Shore excursions were well orchestrated and Celebrity excursions staff were always visible and helpful. We enjoyed unusually sunny and warm weather in all but one port (Ketchikan).

In regard to our cabin, we were satisfied. It was quiet (with the exception noted above) and located mid-ship which minimized any possibility of sea sickness due to the motion of the ship on choppier seas.

On-board photos were an appreciated feature but the $20 USD price tag was a little steep.

Our only real disappointment was due to fellow passengers. THIS DOES NOT REFLECT ON CELEBRITY WHATSOEVER. While we met some fantastic people on the ship, we also met some who were not so fantastic.

Common courtesy and manners were rare in numerous dealings with fellow travelers. It is a real shame because we were all on-board to have fun and enjoy our vacation. I'd like to think that this is not the "norm" on cruises and hope for a better experience in the future.

Disembarkation was surprisingly efficient and once our tag number was called, it took no more than 15 minutes. From what I understand, this sets quite a precedent in the industry.

Celebrity has a real gem in regard to the Century and we will certainly book again. The shores of Hawaii are calling to us already. Less
