Incredible Glitz and Ambience

Sail Date: April 2012
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Port Canaveral (Orlando)
The 7-day Western Caribbean was incredible on the Dream. We could stroll the Promenade deck after dinner and enjoy the Caribbean ambience like we were the only people on board. We liked deck 5, the Lanai area, for its ambience, outdoor areas, and for the Ocean Plaza hub, particularly for its early morning coffee and treats at Plaza Cafe and Patisserie. We enjoyed music and incredible mini-martinis there in Ocean Plaza as well.

The aft dining was incredible--not crowded at all--and always with restaurant style seating--it just made meeting people so much easier, with lenthy conversations if we wanted it. This just didn't happen in the rushed, crowded cafeteria hubs on deck 10; you could beat the crowd with early breakfast. But in Scarlet Dining, we enjoyed window seating at lunch and breakfast--always an unhurried treat.

Dream's food is really good. In Scarlet Dining, you just can send it back and ask for something else--but it was so good I never More did.

Our room, interior on Deck 1, was nice, comfortable, and the steward was attentive and friendly.

Dream's shows got better each night, culminating in an incredible laser light show. The singing and dancing were expertly choreographed, and we were never bored, that's for sure. Other ports were great: Roatan (Mahogany Bay) was a great port where we struck out by local bus to Club Natali, where we enjoyed a pristine beach, snorkeling, kayaking in the mangroves, all for five U.S. dollars. Nothing can beat the ambiance and activities of the Carnival Dream. The miniature golf was fun; the gym was well furnished for a workout or just getting on the treadmill.

The ship's crew was out to please and they succeeded. We had read online complaints about rowdy kids, but every child on board was having fun and behaving as far as we could tell. We had no complaints the entire 7 days. Less

Cabin review:

Port and Shore Excursions

We did River Wallace in Belize. Our guide, Ken, was a storehouse of knowledge. We ate a Belize wedding feast at the small village at the end of the 20 mile boat trip - the other guides and boat pilots were wonderful. Ken was a history major at the Belize college, and attended archeological symposiums, plus he grew up in this village on the river, so he was a storehouse of ecological and historical information. The bus that took us to the Altun Ha Mayan site was AAA rated -- modern and cool. We should have bought the local bottled water (iced cold) for a dollar, at the site -- it was hot.

Costa Maya was another port where you could catch a cab and get to the beach, enjoy a shaded lounge chair on the beach, eat Ceviche at Nohoch Kay restaurant (where the ship's officers all come to dine), and get excellent strawberry daiquiris.

We did our own thing in Cozumel, and selected La Choza restaurant for its good reviews, and La Choza greatly exceeded our expectations with delicious fried Red Snapper, Margaritas, and desserts. We had both the flan and the avocado pie, both of which we had read about, and greatly anticipated. Our host was third generation owner, and the restaurant was a true adventure in regional Mexican food. We bought silver necklace from Sergios jewelers - very authentic and honest - and came highly recommended from La Choza owner.

Roatan (Mahogany Bay) was a great port where we struck out by local bus to Club Natale, where we enjoyed a pristine beach, snorkeling, kayaking in the mangroves, all for five U.S. dollars. The club trains Hondurans to work in the cruise and hospitality industries, so the people are really trying to please. We were treated like kings. The small restaurant and bar was great for a burger lunch, but the pool was exquisite and refreshing, swimming in cool water high on a hill overlooking the verdant beach - absolutely stunning. Only six people were on the beach, and a family was enjoying the beach, so it was quite a respite from the crowded beach where the ship docked.
