Having won a 4 day trip with hurtigruten on travelchannel-my wife and i had booked a voyage on M/S polarlys and on the 5 th of march flew from Copenhagen to Tromso to catch her, arrived at Tromso airport two hours prior to Polarlys arrival in Tromso-so we went to the harbor and saw the Hurtigruten ship come in-but something was wrong-Finnmarken was her name-so i got hold of a couple of guys who worked on the dock, and asked about Polarlys?-she sailed last night!!OMG there we were my wife and stranded..Then one of the guys said that it was not unusual for this to happen-so we went onboard an waited for all the others to check in and then went to reception to inform them of our plight. We then got a first glimpse of Hurtigruten service, the nice lady laughed and set about finding us a cabin which was,nt a problem-we could even have an upgrade, but since it was a price in a competetion, and we had only won an inside cabin-we settled for that..
So we got an iside cabin on Finnmarken and it More was cosy-we didnt spend much time there,as there were more important things outside-The next day i broke a tooth and our trip looked like it was ruined-i had incredible pain and couldnt eat any of the excellent food-then we went to reception to ask if there was a dentist in the next port of call-i was asked to come back in 15 minutes, after 10 minutes i was asked to go to recepetion-in the next port a cab would be waiting,a dentist had been informed and the driver knew the adress, and they had had instructions, that there was only 1 hour till the ship would leave, the whole thing was completed in 50 minutes..
The reason i write such a long story is to show the level of service on Hurtigruten-My wife and i may not be seasoned cruisers, but do recognise good service when we see it.
Anyway Finnmarken is a beautiful ship, with and oldfashioned feel about her, which is not surprising as she is modelled on an older ship-interiorwise mind you-We got to experience allkinds of weather on our trip-especially the last 18 hours-Full storm was impressive, nature at her finest.
The ship in general is clean all over and the food, whether it was buffet or The set evening dinner was really nice, price of beer and wine-AAAHH-my wife and i come from Denmark and are used to paying a lot money for everything-but no were near these prices-still this did not detract much from the overall experience(we had 2 bib of wine in the cabin,so we could take a drink before and after dinner and up to the panoramalounge)
Now the prime reason for taking a trip with hurtigruten is the nature, and it is stunning-the fjords and mountains are fantastic(especially when you come from Denmark)but also the food and service onboard is fantastic.
Dont expect luxury-fancy entertainment and so on onboard-this is a domestic route, that gets you into ports you would never see on a larger ship-nature and the people of Norway is the experience in our opinion-we have only travelled aboard the Finnmarken but we can highly recommend this ship..
Tak til Hurtigruten for en uforglemmelig tur-Thank you to Hurtigruten for a memorable voyage. Less
