We booked this cruise because South America was somewhere we had always wanted to travel to and having cruised with HAL previously we thought that we would get the same good service - unfortunately, this was not to be.
Embarkation was a little slow with a wait of around 1 hour at the Buenos Aires Cruise Terminal but when we had completed all the paperwork we quickly found our cabin and my wife ...
We embarked on 16 March for the 14 day cruise via Malacca, George Town, Phuket, Myanmar, Langkawi, KL and return to Singapore. We made our own arrangements for tours as the ship tours are indeed far too expensive. Our tours were at least half the price, smaller groups and more personal. Some days we just did our own thing. It's essential to do research and then you will learn information such as ...
Took the Zuiderdam on a Trans Atlantic from March 16-31. This was our first TA, and likely our last. Service on the ship was very good. The activities were suitable for the passengers, average age 70 plus or minus. The food on HAL is quite good and the dining service was dependable but certainly not very personal nor attentive. The wine list is pathetic, and the prices 3 to 4 times retail are ...
This was our first-ever cruise, so the Zuiderdam will always be special to us. We did not know what to expect from so many days at sea, but it ended up being the most memorable journey. Embarkation was easy and well-organized and in under 30 minutes, we were allowed to board the ship. We felt quite young on the ship (both of us 41)--my guess is that average age is 65+, but we soon found out that ...
I am a 3 star Mariner with Holland America, but this is my first cruise with them in Asia.
The Volendam has come through its December refurbishment quite nicely. I was in a category A, verandah cabin, quite mid-ship, 6163. Other than it being directly above the piano bar, it couldn’t have been a nicer stateroom. On the first night I called the front desk and asked for ear plugs, they were ...
We embarked on 16th March, after spending three days at the Riverview Hotel - which we had gotten a 'superior weekend deal' on - great hotel - not one complaint!! The cruise docked in Malacca, Penang, Malaysia, Phuket Thailand, three days in Rangoon, Myanmar, Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I was concerned about the Volendam as I had read some bad reviews but have to say, we had no ...
We took a 14 day Singapore to Singapore on the Volendam in March. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves. Other than the shuttle bus to town on Langkawi Island, we didn't take any ship's shore excursions. However, in Phuket, Yangon and Kuala Lumpur we took excursions arranged by ourselves online before the cruise.
We had an outside cabin on the Lower Promenade deck and were happy with both the ...
We have travelled with HAL 8 times, however our last experience did not live up to our previous experiences. Notwithstanding the outstanding Indonesian and Filipino crew (without whom the cruise line would sink into mediocrity), our dealings with the front-office staff was less than helpful. We had been assured before sailing that the cabin we had selected was large enough for 3 people, this was ...
We are active cruisers and have enjoyed many trips on HAL! This was not the HAL we knew and loved.
First, the cutbacks are very obvious: from the food to the tissues, fewer staff, lecturers and quality entertainers. But, more dramatic was the huge number of passengers who refused to wear appropriate dress for the evening/venue and the staff's refusal to do anything about it.
We cruise for ...
I've just finished reading some of the recent Volendam reviews and think I must have been on a different ship. Our experience, overall, was stellar. The ship had just completed a major drydock in December, and it seemed to us the things had been spruced up quite a bit, and the public areas were in very nice condition. We picked this cruise for the itinerary, most of which was new to us. By way ...
