First tiime we have cruised with Princess. Thought this new ship would be wonderful. And it was - to a point. The good: ship looks great. Beautifully decorated, shiny, clean and new. Our mini-suite was lovely, if smaller than on other cruises we’ve done with other companies. Bed comfortable. Balcony very small, but adequate. Our stateroom staff were just lovely, friendly, everything always clean. The food on board we found very good in the buffet area and dining rooms. The International cafe was great, staff excellent. The entertainment was quite good, if you could see it (more on that later). Movie under the Stars is well done, and great new movies all the time, which are then available on the tvs in your stateroom. The Average: where to start. I did not expect to feel the ship so crowded, and it only took a day to realise this magnificent looking ship has been designed by one screwy naval architect. There is simply a flow problem of people moving around the ship, particularly on sea days or when weather is inclement on the upper decks. The central Piazza looks great, but is overlooked by cafes, bars and restaurants, which suffer from the terrible acoustics - everything entertainment wise often sounds so shrill and loud and completely drowns out any conversation you’re trying to have. Tried and failed to have a relaxing breakfast one morning at the International cafe while a paper plane competition was being held with a very enthusiastic and shrill-voiced hostess - just awful. This area too becomes an absolute bottleneck when activities or performances are being held - just not nearly enough seating, and people have to stand two to three deep to see - and block anyone trying to move past. I can’t understand why other areas of the ship aren’t used for “fun” activities, Zumba, line dancing, wooden horse racing etc - where the noise can be managed better. There is a shortage of outside deck area, virtually nothing downstairs off the public areas, and on the upper levels there is nowhere you can walk completely around the ship - it all comes across as public spaces being compromised for additional cabins or exclusive areas. The theatre is small (much smaller than any cruise ship we have been on), there as there can be up to 4000 people on board, and shows are usually shown twice at night, sometimes repeated the next day in the afternoon, simple maths shows that there is no way everyone can see the headline shows, and people quickly work out they have to be in the theatre 30-40 mins early to get a seat. There are other public areas like the Vista Bar, and Princess Live Theatre, but public areas seems to be small and compartmentalised. The ship is enormous but doesn’t feel like it is - hard to explain but something seems amiss. We just felt it was such a shame when the ship looks so lovely at first sight, but just somehow fails to deliver. The bad: the worst by far shops on any cruise ship - some highend shops that were always empty, and then only two small stores for general merchandise, souvenirs etc - these were crowded, and offered very little - could not even buy a Princess logo hat (I collect) as these apparently sold out a few cruises ago, and the staff couldn’t order and they had to just take what was sent to them. The alcohol duty free section was ridiculous, one bottle of each type of alcohol you may want to buy stacked on a tiny table in among the toys and chocolates - you pick up an order form from the table - no staff interaction, no promotions, worst I’ve seen on any ship. Overview: I don’t know how, but this gorgeous looking ship, with lovely staff and good food, just misses - and I can only think it’s the design - more use needs to be made of some smaller public areas, and some activities moved from the central Piazza. Cruises are not inexpensive, there’s a big market out there and lots to choose from. I had a really enjoyable cruise as New Zealand is magnificent and we were off the ship for all shore-days. But I would not sail on this beautiful looking new ship again, although I will definitely cruise to New Zealand again in the future. Read Less

Choose the cruise for ease of journey and a number of places in New Zealand we had missed previously. We were impressed with Dunedin and fascinated with the history and beauty of Napier. Having been to Auckland before we decided to take the ferry over to Davenport, an easy choice as the ferry is right on the wharf where Majestic Princess docked. It was a lovely 15 minute ride which showcased the harbour and the little town itself was pretty and very visitor friendly; we had lunch there and browsed interesting shops before returning to Auckland. The itinerary Proved to be just the ticket! Every staff member we encountered on the ship were without fail, friendly, efficient and helpful, from wheelchair assistance at embarkation and disembarkation, to dining and stateroom staff. Caught up with all the latest movies under the stars and in cabin and really enjoyed The Crown grill, La Mer and Alfredos. Symphony dining staff were also superb. Joined the pop choir and made some new friends ….All in all loved it and are excited to return next year. Read Less

The ship is new and very impressive. Staterooms were bigger that SEA princess and SUN princess. Both my wife and I enjoy keeping fit whilst on board. I was appalled that to use the sauna I would have to pay $199. You can not purchase a day pass to use the sauna or steam room. The Majestic also had fewer fresh water dispenses than SEA and SUN. At breakfast you were not able to serve yourself orange juice. The food was not of the high standard that I had experienced on previous Princess Cruises. The ship was full and it appeared that staff were struggling to cope with demand. At dinner our waiter had too many tables to cater for and we often had to wait long periods for drink service. The destinations were excellent in particular Milford Sound and Tauranga. In summary I would not recommend the Majestic Princess. Read Less

My wife and I are platinum level cruisers, needless to say we have stayed true to Princess. We decided to try the newest in the Princess fleet that is the Majestic Princess, unfortunately the experience was not what we expected. The atmosphere we experienced on previous cruises with Princess on obviously smaller ships (Golden princess, Diamond Princess, Sea Princess) was not there. On this occasion it was just as if Princess have focused on getting as much as possible from passengers, giving very little back...No more happy hour...Elite/Platinum special afternoon get together s were dismal to say the least. Overall a very average cruise experience definitely not up to Princess standard...Hopefully it will not be the standard for future cruises, because if not then a lot of regular Princess cruises will be looking at other cruise lines. Ship:- A beautiful ship - clean and definitely Majestic Cabin:- Balcony cabin M629 was great with all anyone could ask for..No noise with easy access to lifts - stairs - buffet area and the Wake Bar at the very rear of the ship. Dining:- We had anytime dining and did not experience any problems getting a table. We were however disappointed with the meals on several occasions. Meat was not cooked (raw) one one occasion not edible. Other dishes were very repetitious and bland, definitely not as described. The buffet was as expected for the first two days, but it never changed ????what you saw to-day is what you got tomorrow.... Entertainment: Went to the Theater once and saw a juggler and comedian...great show Went once to a Princess production show and did not go again...It was loud and suitable for a very young audience, certainly not for the majority of older folk. In cabin TV was great with a good selection of the latest movies... Activities:- A good selection of daytime programs to suit most tastes. most of which were around the Atrium area of the ship. If you could get a table... Service:- Could not fault the service from any area of the ship...staff were always ready to assist and help. Ports:- Having done this cruise twice before we were familiar with the ports visited, however still enjoyed every aspect every time. Shore Excursions:- I guess this is always a bone of contention for regular cruises as they are aware that the cost of an excursion from Princess is going to be far more expensive than purchasing from local operators..Always a good idea to do your research before buying an excursion from the ship. Drinks:- One would think that sailing duty free ect would be great, sadly this is not the case. The average price of a beer was around $8.95 with the price of a glass of average wine was $10 per glass. A bottle of wine for which we would purchase in Australia for around $10-$12 per bottle, started at $46 and went up from there. I, like the majority of cruises who enjoy an ale or glass of wine consider this to be exorbitant. If you dont drink at all thats fine but an average Aussie considers this a part of the social experience and looks forward to it. The so called Duty Free alcohol on board the ship is just ridiculous, you can buy better from Dan Murphy on a regular day. Why Princess and other cruise lines think that passengers are silly is beyond me. Conclusion:- A big ship and definitely an experience, but for a regular older (65+) cruiser I would probably choose a more traditional ship, I can go down to Westfield Plaza and sit in a coffee shop and have the same if not a better atmosphere. We wanted to go down under to Australia and New Zealand. This cruise was reasonably priced and had a lot of New Zealand ports. The majestic princess exceeded our expectations. The food was great, the service was outstanding, and the entertainment was brilliant. We really loved the day activities such as trivia and name that tune. We thought we had sufficient time at each port. The on boarding and disembarking process was well planned and had no waiting around. The only only problem we had was the room warmed up too much during the night. The waiters in our set time seating for dinner were so good and friendly that we tipped them extra. The ship is really well decorated and clean. We only had to search hard for a table once in the buffet area for breakfast. We enjoyed all the ports except Auckland, because it’s a big city and we did no excursions there. The port we stopped at which was close to Christchurch was our least favorite excursion, but we are still glad to have seen it. We took the 1.5 hour trip from the dock to Christchurch with uninspiring scenery . Then Christchurch is still in repair from the earthquake 8 years ago. Lots of scaffolding, construction sites and closed buildings. We visited 3 days after the shooting and saw an outstanding outpouring of love and sympathy with digs and flowers. The free museum is well done and we spent most of our day there. We ate at a great Indian restaurant. We booked small excursions on our own at most ports and enjoyed all of them. Hobbiton was a great tour which we recommend as was the glowworm cave at the Bay of Islands small group (4 of us) tour. The value we received was well worth the cruise price. We loved our cruise and look forward to another Princess Cruise Read Less

We cruise to NZ every year, and Princess is our favourite cruise line. Majestic Princess is only two years old, and is still in very good condition. The ports of call are excellent, and there is a fairly good selection of shore excursions. The public areas are spacious, and the cabins are a good size. The bed is very comfortable, but there is only one chair. The balcony on this cabin was a very good size, with two deck chairs, a small table, and two foot stools. The food was well presented but quite repetitive. The waiters were very obliging and efficient, and also polite and friendly. The entertainment staff left a bit to be desired, with one member who didn't turn up to organise one event, and who was also 15 minutes late for another. The production shows featuring the singers and dancers were fabulous. The Wake Show (the morning in-house TV show featuring all the events of the day) was not very interesting, and we stopped watching it after a few days. We have noticed that the standards on Princess have deteriorated over the years we have been cruising (26 cruises with Princess, 10 with other cruise lines), so I think our next NZ cruise will be with someone else. It was to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary and was a perfect choice. We were married in NZ so it felt right cruising back on the fabulous Majestic Princess. We weren’t disappointed, the food, service and entertainment was first class, just loved it. At night we dined in the Allegro dining room and it was the highlight of our day, the food and waiter service. We then went to the show of the night, not to be missed, great entertainment. The Hollywood Pool Club was such a relaxing area during the day, a heated indoor pool and spa, pleasant ambience to read etc. On our anniversary, balloons and a notice was put on our cabin door. We booked in to Harmony, a special restaurant that night and enjoyed it so much, wow. The waiters presented us with a little chocolate cake with a candle and sang Happy Anniversary. Everyone was so helpful on the ship, nothing was a problem, everything was so clean and we felt safe. For us, the cruise ports were all interesting, the weather was perfect and we enjoyed our shore excursions. Probably the highlights, and there were many, were the Sounds, Taieri Railway, Akaroa, Te Papa, Waiheke Island and the Bay of Islands, the Hole in the Rock excursion. The Art Deco in Napier we loved and all the volunteers who were there to meet the ship in every port made it special. I hadn’t been to Mt Maunganui and Tauranga, loved it. Very impressed with the embarkation and disembarkation, went like clockwork, congratulations to all involved. A really memorable cruise, we will be back! Read Less

The Majestic Princess is an amazing ship. The staff and crew were fantastic and provided an outstanding level of service. One of the highlights has to be sailing through the Fiordlands. Absolutely stunning and we enjoyed this mostly from our balcony. There is so much to do on the ship if you choose to or you can simply relax. I would highly recommend the Chef's Table. This is worth every extra penny and as long as you enjoy fabulous food and service, then you will love it. It is also a great chance to dress up and for the men to wear sports jackets (not necessary but looks good). The food in the dining areas is fantastic and the service across the ship amazing. The bar and dining staff really know how to look after you. The entertainment on the ship is of an extremely high standard. Lots of places to sit and have a drink with friends before deciding where you will eat your dinner. You will love it. We will certainly be cruising with Princess again. Read Less

We have cruised with princess for many years. Bigger ships are not always good. Smoother ride, nice amenities BUT.. CROWDS... only one pool area... PACKED. Only one spa.. PACKED. Only ONE ATRIUM.. not even standing room... They pulled things like Wine Stewards from the dining room..so no one has any wine knowledge.. "I think white would go with chicken" Used to be much better service but I understand their goal to be more main stream. We will likely look for smaller ships with better service options as we move into retirement. The bargain is still there for princess, but, they should steer bargainers to carnival and put princess back to the level it once was. EVERYONE on the ship worked very hard and the staff is incredible, but they are overworked by a company concerned with the bottom line. I would say, you have no problem filling your ships...up the prices a bit, bring back quality to top tier. The LA MER was a DISASTER. They put the fine dining IN THE ATRIUM at the same time as the rock concert... "Come enjoy the fine dining french experience..and yell" Also, the other fine dining Steakhouse was also adjacent to a music venue with no walls between..we heard others complain about that. The larger ship means no full running track any more, no wrap around promenade deck, and just 3500 people in the same place at the same time. For many this is fine but this is the first Princess cruise we were surprised with that way. Ports were good but of course, 3500 people getting off takes a while and the lines back were long on tenders. For those who like BIG, this ship is for you. Read Less

Loved Sydney before departure. Was a great ship and itenerary. Embarkation was easy. From checking to cabin within an hour. Huge ship but didn't seam busy very much. Always somewhere quiet to sit and chill. Plenty of quiet bars around and nooks to sit and chill in. Food a bit repetitive in buffet. Could do with changing more but overall a good trip. MDR was great food and atmosphere like usual. Did anytime dining. Didn't have to wait for table. Cabin was of good size. Bathroom can always be bigger but that's what you get on ships. Layout was plenty room to move around in for 2 people. Only went to shows with princess dancers, shows were fabulous as always. Could have done with more shows and deck parties. Didn't have the usual love boat deck party I've had on previous cruises. Missed them a bit. Shore excursions were great. Loved the village and hungi tour. Would easily do NZ cruise on her again.
