People don't seem to review the shorter cruises out of Long Beach, so I wanted to write one for last week. This was our third Imagination cruise from Long Beach, and it was great! Pre-cruise: Got to Long Beach the day before the cruise, and spent the day at Cabrillo Beach (San Pedro) relaxing in the sun. Stayed at the Golden Sails in Long Beach, which was a fine hotel 20 minutes from port. On Sunday morning, we left the hotel at 10:20, with zero traffic, we were parked in the garage at 10:45. Embarkation: This is the easiest embarkation port of the many we have used. We were completely checked in and waiting to board before 11 am. FttF was called at 11:11 (good luck!!) and we were boarded very quickly. Straight to our stateroom (E90 - right off the atrium) to drop bags, and we were at Guy's Burgers before 11:30. Stateroom: Excellent choice (E 90) for access to everything. No problems with noise, smell or stateroom steward. Received twice-daily cleaning as requested. Room was in excellent shape, with comfy bedding and everything in working order. Dining: Had Anytime dining, which worked great. Ate all breakfasts in the MDR, and avoided the buffet completely. Lunch was Guys, Blue Iguana or Deli. Sea day brunch was awesome as ever---steak and eggs was great. All dinners were good, with many choices, and we ordered double appetizers or entrees more than once. Brought case of Coke Zero and two wine bottles in carryon, so we brought our own glasses to dinner each night. Worked beautifully. Day one: Bags were delivered before 12:30, so we were quickly unpacked, and headed to an empty Serenity deck. Relaxed until muster drill, then off to get dressed for dinner. Yes, we dress for dinner each night. Not over the top, but I wore a dress, and my husband wore button up shirt and slacks each night. Comedians were okay this trip, and we enjoyed family and adult shows most days. Did a little dancing in the nightclub. Funniest thing was "80's hour", which was from 10 to 10:15 pm one night! Dance floor was packed for those fifteen minutes!!! Day two - Catalina: Breakfast in the MDR, then ready to tender to Catalina. Expected a crowd, but easily caught a tender with no wait. Didn't even use FttF tendering. Rented a golf cart for about 90 minutes for a nice tour. Walked around a bit peeking into shops for a little while. After that, we lounged on the beach by the dock for a few hours before returning to the ship for a late lunch. Short but fun day. Day three - Ensenada: This was a weird day. We had breakfast in the MDR again, and got off the ship easily at approximately 10:30. Nice walk into town along the new Malecon. The streets, stores, bars, restaurants were EMPTY. It was amazing how few people we saw in Ensenada. Nothing like our past visits. We walked along the main street looking in a few stores. Had a quick (unsatisfying) lunch at a street restaurant, then hit our favorite Ensenada store that sells stained glass, and headed back to the ship. In the two years since we've been there, prices across the board in Ensenada have skyrocketed. Maybe that's why it was dead. Returned to the ship for Serenity deck and relaxation around 2:30. Day four: Day at sea started with sea day brunch, and consisted mostly of the Serenity deck! We went on this trip to relax, and relax we did! Got front row in Serenity, but it was packed by 10:30 that morning - don't dawdle! Disembarkation: So quick and easy! They started self-assist at 7 am. Started calling zones at 8:45, and did a last call for everyone to disembark by 9:05!!! Short wait for customs, and we were back in the car by 10 am. Overall: An excellent cruise for first-timers looking to try cruising, or for seasoned cruisers looking for a relaxing few days. We don't gamble on ships, and didn't drink too much. The ship was oddly empty for the most part (considering this was Holy Week/Spring Break). Never a wait at a bar, easy to get chairs on Lido and Serenity, no long lines at lunch locations. It was downright weird!!! For the price, it is an excellent value cruising experience, and keeps us satisfied between longer cruises. Next up for us a the Legend Transatlantic 2020! Read Less

For our first cruise my wife and I were a little scared to do a long cruise. What if one of us gets sea sick easily, or can't stand being cramped in a cabin, or we get bored. So to play it safe we chose one of the shortest cruises we can find. Being in SoCal we are also lucky that Long Beach is a short drive away. In any case we chose one of the 3 Day Baja Mexico cruises - known for college kids wanting to get drunk in Mexico. I guess if we had a choice between a ship full of college kids or a ship full of retirees we'd rather have the college kids anyways. Turns out the ship had a good mix of people with families, college kids, older people, etc. Probably on the younger side I would say judging from some videos I saw of the recent cruise in Norway that got disabled and passengers had to be rescued with helicopters off the ship. In any case I didn't want to get a cabin with an ocean view or a balcony on this first cruise. We had to make it the worst possible cabin to see if we could survive. And definitely no problems having an interior. We didn't miss not having a window to the outside world at all. We basically used the room for sleeping in and getting changed for the day, that was it. We hung out on the ship most of the day, either watching shows, playing games, doing auctions, sitting on the decks outside, etc. We had plenty of activities to do on our short 3 night cruise. Our cabin was on Main Deck, which is Deck 5, two decks below the boarding deck Empress. We were mid / aft which was good because the dining areas were right above us two floors. Easy to get to and without any noise. A lot of activities on Imagination are more Forward so we would have a small walk forward to get to the activities but not too bad. I think we would probably try to get Mid Ship if we sailed in the future. Our Steward was great and recognized my wife and I every morning. Room was always cleaned and cute little towel animals left every day. We left all of our electronics out with no problems - didn't feel a need to put anything in the safe. Dining was hit or miss. For the price we paid we can't complain and we enjoyed the food. But picky people beware, the buffet is probably more of an average buffet rather than a higher priced buffet. In addition the food during the evening dinners was good but not something that will blow your socks off. The wait staff at dinner was excellent and we enjoyed the food but it was a little hit or miss. Some dishes were excellent and others were okay, nothing spectacular. Either way - a great first time cruise option to see how well you can handle being on a ship for several days. Read Less

This is mainly a shore excursion review. My daughter (on spring break from college) and I did the Bufadora Kayak excursion. Rebecca and Carlos were our guides and they were great. (Jose-Luis was our driver and he was great as well, but didn't get in the water.) Nice drive out to the point, and then suited up. I recommend the wetsuits - they will keep you warm if the water is cold. Also, take Dramamine or other seasickness prevention. We had 5-6-foot swells, and when you're out in a small (even 2-person) kayak, you feel it more than in the cruise ship. We had great views of La Bufadora, far better than what is seen up top. Carlos led the way, and my daughter and I learned pretty fast how to paddle straight, how to turn, all with the help of Carlos and Rebecca. We got some great pics. If you have a waterproof camera or a waterproof sleeve for your phone, you may want to plan to take those. After paddling back in and rinsing off and changing, we headed up to the top of the Bufadora shopping street for great tacos. Then a quiet drive back to the ship, or to town to do some shopping. The cruise itself was great. I've done this particular cruise two other times, and the staff works hard to make sure everyone has fun. The weather was a little colder than we hoped, so less time for my daughter to sun on deck, but we lounged and read books in Serenity and other places on deck. We won a Thomas Kincade print at the art auction, and recommend those events as a fun thing to do. They had an egg-drop contest, and let individuals or teams build whatever they could to protect an egg dropped from the 10th deck to the 7th in the atrium. All winners won a medal. Our team used a parachute and straw design and won our medal. That was a fun part of the sea day. Shoutouts to Putu (room steward) and to Abigail and Angela, our dining room dinner staff. Highly recommend. Read Less

-Entertainment was fantastic. If Cruise Director Melessa is there, you are in for a great time. Gender Battle, Hairy Chest Competition (go Berta) - on the floor laughing. Eric Schwartz was extremely funny. The Divas show had great singing and dancing. I went with my 2 teen boys and we all had a great time. -Food was excellent - Guy Fieri burgers were fresh and delicious. PIzza was thin crust, fresh to order, and delicious. Iguana Cantina had great tacos. Skip the Lido dining - buffet didn't look that appetizing although made-to-order omelettes were good. We ate dinner in the Pride Dining Room and had mixed meals and service. -Room was tight for 3 of us. 2 twin beds and a cot. We had the ocean view which was nice. It was clean and served its purpose. -Outdoor activities. Mini golf was fun. Waterslide area was fun - the large slide could have used more water. Pool was too cold to use. Jacuzzi was packed with little kids. We made our way into it but be warned that you will have little arms and legs jamming into you. Never got to use ping pong table since it was always being used. -Excursions. Catalina activities were all cancelled due to weather. We rented a golf cart and drove around the island which was fun. Ensenada - we did horseback riding which was fun with great views. Couldn't quite understand why all the horses were kicking each other though. -Would we go again? YES. Really fun time at a great value. Read Less

Took the 12/13 to 12/16 weekend cruise to Mexico on Carnival Imagination. I have done this trip before and I've always had a good time. The Imagination is an older ship. This is to say that it doesn't have the amenities of the newer ships such as alternative dining or all the extra entertainment options you will find on the new builds. What you will get in return is an uncrowded ship (only about 2000 passengers) and a shower in your stateroom that you can actually turn around in. Sure the rooms don't have a fridge, unless you opt for the suites, but the extra shower room is nice. Breakfast options are abundant: Lido Buffet, Blue Iguana Cantina for breakfast burritos, room service and on sea days the awesome Sea Day brunch. Lunch offerings are Guy's Burger Joint, the deli in the buffet, the buffet, 24 hour pizza pirate and room service. Dinner is the restaurant, deli, pizza pirate, the buffet and room service. I have to admit that I've never ordered room service over the many times I've sailed on Imagination so I cannot rate the service or food quality. Entertainment was good. I have seen Epic Rock more times than I can count and I still enjoy the show. This show has eight singers/dancers who preform songs from Bon Jovi, Queen, Guns & Roses, Aerosmith, Meatloaf, Joan Jett, Journey and others. I always find myself clapping to the beat and cheering the performers. Such a fun time. They also do a show called Divas that features songs by Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Rhianna and others. It is a fun show, but I prefer Epic Rock. All the employees were friendly. Whether it was a bar steward, a waiter or jr waiter, room steward or someone you were passing in the hall. They all seemed happy and were there with a smile and a friendly hello. I've done just about all the tours and sightseeing there is to do in Ensenada. From visiting La Bufadora, to horseback riding, craft beer and wine tasting and the bar hop tour, I've found that the best way to experience Ensenada is just to get out there and walk around. I have limited Spanish vocabulary but have found that many of the people in the tourist areas speak English. Its Mexico so don't be afraid to haggle with the vendors. They expect it and you will end up paying too much if you don't. In my opinion this is a great vacation option. I only had to take two days off of work. What a great way to let lose and relieve stress. If you're looking for a fun, short cruise without breaking the bank, I recommend taking one of the Carnival weekend cruises. Either Imagination or Inspiration. Read Less

We were looking for warmer weather and this cruise was a great deal. Cabin was very nice but the best part was the dining. We had John, Hossain and Simoj as our wait staff and they made dinner time so must more then awesome. The service we received was like going to a four or five star restaurant. We really enjoyed Santa Catalina island and the time on shore, included a glass bottom boat tour while we were there. The island is not large and we were able to see quite a bit of it in the 5 to 6 hours we were there. The show are smaller and have more audience interaction then the larger ships we have been on. We did all the variety shows and a lot of the comedy shows, did not go to any thing we did not like. We enjoyed the cruise and had fun with the people at our table. Read Less

This is a good get away cruise. The embarkation was smooth and quick as they have a large upgraded facility. This will be a plus when the Panarama comes to town. Our Steward, Richmond, was kind, very attentive and met all our needs. This is the position that we always give extra tips to. This time we had an inside cabin, due to the small size of the ship, and it had more than enough room for us. Once we boarded we enjoyed a much needed Guy's burger which was delicious! We also hit the deli and the buffet. Rooms were open early so we enyoyed the jacuzzi. We had all of our dinners at the main dining room. The food is always great though it would be good to have more variety added. The breakfast menu was updated and was a great plus with good variety. We stayed on the ship as we had been to the ports before, so we always had chairs by the pool or at the Santuary. The seas day brunch is well worth any wait! The sea day had rain, but we were easily kept busy on our own, though it would be nice to have more of a variety of games or dance classes. The disembarkation was easy and we were off quickly after an early breakfast. Read Less

I recently moved to the west coast and i wanted to take a vacation before the year was over. After talking to my best friend, i decided to take a cruise. I took the 3 day cruise out of long beach to ensenada. Everything was absolutely amazing. The ship was so organized and the excursion was great. Getting on and off the ship was fast. I booked an excursion with carnival that picked us up right at the port of call and got us back to the ship in ample time. I had a interior port hole cabin on deck 6. I did feel some rocking but it was soothing. The food was delicious and there was always something to do like the divas show and trivia. You get so much for a great price. There was something for everyone like a club, children's activities and even a library that has board games. I will be taking my 5 year old daughter in May. Read Less

The two Carnival ships that do the short three and four day sails out of Los Angeles are old. So old, in fact, that there are very few balcony rooms. But looking beyond the vintage of the ship(s), my wife and I like these cruises. Here are my notes on our latest Imagination cruise. First, embarkation and debarkation were smooth as silk. Carnival turned this ship around twice a week, and they have it down to an art. Second, we liked our interior cabin. It was good size, the bedding and mattress were nice, and the bathroom was quite large compared to similar inside bathrooms we have encountered on other ships. Third, the food was good. The main dining room courses were consistently well prepared and presented. The Guy Fieri burgers up by the pool were always fresh, hot, and bursting with flavor. Even the pizza at the 24 hour pizza counter was well done. These three things on the Imagination were generally better than their counterparts on Princess, Norwegian, and HAL cruises we have sailed on. Could this all be because there are no pay-extra speciality dining restaurants on the Imagination, and thus Carnival gives its all to the everyday dining? Who knows. Finally, the entertainment on the ship was also good, particularly the comedians. Not surprising, I guess, given the huge amount of talent available in the LA area from which the ships sail. My husband and I went on this cruise for our 10 year anniversary and we had such a great time! The staff was so nice and welcoming and I love the fact that the employees are from different countries. We didn't take our kids but we will take them next time! First off my dinner service team was the best! My service team was Camilo-Team Headwaiter, Octavian and Kadek. Camilo was so welcoming and I loved his personallity, we will always ask for him if he is there next time. We also loved the three bartenders that worked at the bar right before you enter the place where the comedians perform, I can't remember their names but I think they were from Turkey, Ukrain and Columbia but I could be wrong but two guys and one blonde lady. Even our guest services that cleaned our room was friendly! We went on the ATV excursion and they were so good and we had such a blast! The food was good especially the cheeseburgers and I am not even a burger eater! This is a trip that I will never forget and we are defiantely going again real soon. Our cabin number was R25, we want to thank everyone for making this a memoriable trip and I am telling everyone, THANK YOU! Read Less
