Two girlfriends and I went on a 3 day cruise on inspiration Aug. 24th out of Long Beach. We walked on the boat and asked an employee standing just inside with a red shirt that read "Just Ask". I asked him if we could get in our stateroom since we paid for FTTF. He said I don't know and turned away. So I asked another person with the same shirt and got another I don't know!. So we continued walking and found another staff member same shirt. Finally he said of course let me take you to your stateroom. Second day we went on a spa tour which was awesome. 2 of us signed up for yoga the next morning at 8am for an additional charge of $12 and Massages. We woke up early decided to go to the stretch class. We walked in the gym looked for staff for directions and a gentleman with a badge just pointed and stated in there. No good morning or welcome. He proceeded to walk in the room grabbed a mat started cleaning it. 1 other person arrived. He never spoke nor did he give directions. I asked do we need a mat. He said yes. The he proceeded to tell us our mats were laid down wrong. We quickly moved our mats around. He asked if anyone had any health issues which I told him some shoulder issues. He started the stretches on the floor. When we got up on our knees I groaned and said it hurt my knees. He yelled at me that he asked if we had issues and why didn't I tell him. My knees hurt due to the horribly thin mats. I got very upset and left the Class. We did have the very best room steward that was very nice. Our dining room staff was the most friendly and helpful. We had a very nice cocktail waiter named Moises. He was the most friendly and caring guy on the entire cruise. He made sure we were taken care of everyday not just with cocktails. Overall the cruise was fun. Cabin was on Empress deck near the lobby so it was very noisy until around midnight. Loved The FTTF pass helped with all the lines. We did anytime dining and never waited more than 10 minutes for a table. Ty the money guy was awesome and funny. Read Less

We normally cruise with Princess where we are Platinum, but have been on 2 other Carnival cruises and the dates matched better for us on this trip. Four day Baja Mexico cruise out of Long Beach. Embarkation was good, but we didn't see anywhere to deposit luggage. Found out later it was a level below, but no signs anywhere to let you know that. (if you park in garage) So we ended up bringing luggage along. Given how many other people were doing the same, seems we were not the only ones who had this problem. Cabin was great, it was an outside cabin. But, when we arrived our cabin steward stated we had a choice of 0900 or 1600 for our cabin to be cleaned. Neither time was good, since we might like to sleep late, and 4:00pm is when your coming back from shore excursions and getting ready for dinner. We said 4:00pm as the lesser of the evils. But this time was so bad for us that out of four days we only got our cabin cleaned one time. Had the DND sign on the door since on the other days we were using the cabin at 4:00pm. I wonder when Carnival changed the policy, as it wasn't like this on our prior cruises and Princess cleans the cabin when your out, in fact they tidied up twice a day. This was the most disappointing feature of the cruise and while our steward did a great job on the one day - the restrictive time for cabin cleaning spoiled the other three days. Entertainment was great, loved the comedian and even the musical shows. Food was good, no complaints other than normal long lines at peek times and this cruise was fully booked and being winter school break there we a large amount of children. Had dinner in the dining room one time, and service was very slow and mis-timed; opted for buffet the rest of the cruise. Food was good, but service slow and wife's main course was served about 15 minutes before mine. Timing was just way off. Had to ask for water refills every time. Found myself constantly comparing Carnival to Princess which was probably un-fair, but drinks would be topped off before they got empty over on Princess. The "Guy" burgers were outstanding and the best of any cruise we have taken, a huge bravo-zulu to Carnival on the high quality and wide variety of toppings available. Disembarkation was the best we have ever had out of a dozen cruises we have been on. I timed it, from notice of our time slot to putting luggage in trunk was 20 minutes, the fastest ever. And we didn't even have the benefit of Platinum status on Carnival. Well done. We bought a shore excursion, but because wife wasn't feeling 100% we didn't use it and stayed onboard. Overall, there were great things and some bad things - out of our many cruises - this one just seemed average. We are back with Princess for our next 7 day cruise in April and Alaska will certainly be Princess next summer. Read Less

I've been to Mexico with carnival inspiration 6years ago and had good experience so tried with carnival imagination this time but It was horrible trip. The cabin was the dirtiest and the stinkiest ever seen and linen seemed too old and used. I could see lots of water stain on the cabinets. hairs on the pillow and bed. The room with no ocean view on inspiration was better than this room with ocean view on imagination cruise. The steward was not friendly at all. He seems like tired of his job. no smile at all for entire days. The dining room smelled like un dried cloth smell but food was ok. customer service was not nice and rude. The spa wasn't that satisfied for that price and kind to forced to buy their product. I never want to go back with carnival imagination and don't want to recommend. The worst experience ever. This was a short four-day cruise to Catalina Island and Ensenada Mexico. Boarding in Long Beach was easy as usual, love the way that platinum and diamond guests have a special building to check-in. Inside state room U85 was ready when we arrived. This inside state was spacious, the bath room had a new floor and one shelf. We chose 2 single beds to have a little more space to move around in the room. We dropped our bags and went to explore the ship. Not our first time on Carnival Fantasy Class ship but our first time on the Imagination. The ship layout was a little confusing at times, Center elevators did to go to deck 11, Lido, aft elevator went to deck 10. yet not to 11. When we returned to our room Joanna was there to met us. What a good conversation and first impression. She gave us the option of taking care of the room morning, night or both. We are a little old school and took both and requested a robe and ice bucket. Joanna was always around in the hall during the mornings, always a smile, always good conversation and very attentive to our needs. Carnival couldn’t find any better room Steward. Wish she could just travel along with us on the next 4 cruises we have booked. Sail away went smooth and on time. Once before while leaving Long Beach on Carnival Miracle we were escorted by a pod of dolphins. No way would we go to dining hall with hopes of being able to see that again. We caught evening meal on Lido and I was very impressed. The layout was designed to minimize the lines while providing many options. Monday, Welcome to Catalina Island. It was our intention to get off and rent a golf cart and drive the island. Well, late getting up, so when we arrived at the rental place they were all sold out. Next time we will prearrange a golf cart. Decided to walk around Avalon and visit shops and bars. It is definitely a good place to loiter and have a few drinks. Being Platinum is a good perk when you are boarding the tender for your return ride back to the ship. That evening we had supper in the Spirit Dining Room. Head Waiter Anthony, Waitress Otram and Xavier were a lot of fun and provided good service. Needless to say, our evening on Carnival Imagination is quite intoxicating. Tuesday, Ensenada! After a late breakfast on lido and time in the hot-tub on serenity we decide to take a ride down town to Papa’s and Beer. Bus ride cost $3 round trip down town. We shopped a little, visited Papa’s and Beer and watched the younger crowd have a blast. I think next time to Ensenada we will go to La Bufadora or take the wine country tour. Tuesday night we hit the casino, and did the DW ever hit it. We have been on 17 Carnival cruises prior to this one. This particular Casino staff is the best ever. Dennis, Sharon and Rochell Knop were always visible and quick to assist. Drink waiter Maria Jessa and Jay Caneza we on duty and ready to take an order. Wednesday. Due to cool weather and wind we didn’t spend time at the pool. Just made this a great relaxing day to catch up on reading and rest. Thursday, all good things must come to an end. Disembarkation went smooth and we were back ashore with bags by 9:15. Read Less

Being it was our first cruise, we figured we would do a short one to see if we like it. Let me say this put a horrible taste in our mouth. 1. Staff would walk in your room pretty much unannounced. We were walked in on 2 different times in the middle of the afternoon AFTER they had already been in to clean so they had no business coming in again! I complained and all they said is they would check their cameras. 2. We travelled with my son and nephew. I specifically requested that they NOT be able to charge without my permission. I was told not once but twice (at booking and also upon receiving our sail and sign keys that the only two people that had charging privileges were myself and husband. On day 2 of checking our charges, low and behold, there were over $200 worth of charges on my sons card. He is not the type of kid to do anything maliciously in fact he came to us and asked if we put money on an account for him. Again, I complained and the answer I got was "were you with him". My answer was NO. Then the famous last line "we will check our cameras". Guess I will be calling my credit care company to get the refund! 3. Excursions! Be careful. We booked the parasailing for the boys. Were told they could to up unless we were on the boat. Fine, I paid for seats for myself and my husband. Got there and they made my husband get off because they said they had over-booked. This totally ruined it as he wanted to experience this as well. 4. Noise. Don't try and get ANY sleep. The music radiates throughout the cabins all hours of the night. 5. Buffet lines were long and the food was not very good. Burned (jerky-like) bacon one morning then raw the next. 6. Drinks are BEYOND expensive. $22.00 for 2 drinks! 7. Casino was tight as hell. 8. Ensanada and Catalina were really a joke. Nothing to do on the ship while at the ports. Shops closed, casino closed so only thing to do is drink or sleep. My suggestion is stay home! I was never so happy to see my front door. Worst vacation we have ever taken!! Read Less

My husband and I wanted to get away since our kids were out of town. We were first time cruisers and had no idea what to expect. When we arrived everyone was friendly and tried to be helpful. ( Most frustrating part was getting 10 different answers from 10 different people) Although everyone was quiet friendly, no one seemed to know what they were talking about. I managed to set off the fire alarm in our room because of a hot shower. I was told (like I should of known) that I should of kept the bathroom door shut after a shower. I had no idea and there is no information on that. The remote control in the room was partially melted and worked when it wanted to. The rest of the room was clean. There is only one plug in for a phone so my husband and I had to rotate. Pool is extremely small and for the day at sea, extremely over crowded. My husband and I wanted to relax in the Jacuzzi but they were packed to the brim like sardines. We asked if there was an adults only pool and were told yes, to head out to Serenity. It ended up also being 2 Jacuzzi's filled to the brim and no pool. We left to play Bingo and spent the money for what we thought would be a couple hours to kill. You spend quite a bit of money on Bingo cards for 3 games. Wish we would of saved our money. It was a waste of time. Man in charge of Bingo was fun and nice! Food was good, lines went quickly and areas were clean. We went to the comedy club and had a good time just relaxing and laughing. (Kids were allowed at 2 shows and kicked out the last 2) I forget his name but the gentleman who was in charge of our room was very kind and friendly and called us by name! He was GREAT! We went into Ensenada and did not make any reservations through Carnival. Glad we didn't, it was so much cheaper to book things there through the locals. They are ready to take your money but come through on getting you where you need to be. We want to come again and bring our children. Maybe we won't care as much about things if we are busy with them and we just noticed more because it was quiet with just the two of us. As I stated, the welcoming crew was great! When you leave, not so much. They herd you like cattle and one man stopped to tie his shoe and got yelled at like he was in a Nazi prison camp. I couldn't even believe it. The lady was SO rude. I understand keeping the line moving, but there are some circumstances you have to stop. It almost felt like..... We got your money now get off our boat. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was affordable. The saying is true "you get what you pay for". The FOOD is DISGUSTING!! Disgusting does not do the food justice, maybe inedible? The ship is small and aged. The whole trip was far too long for 4 days on this boat. Nothing much to do and the pool fits maybe 15 comfortably on a ship with nearly 1500 guests. The jacuzzi seats 6 and anymore than that and you are rubbing on other people's skin and that was wholly unappetizing. I went to lunch in the buffet one afternoon and they were having an employee meeting. Not one employee ate the food. They only ate the fruit. And for some odd reason the workers remind me of the Stepford Wives. It was very uncomfortable. If you hear them walking around saying and laughing to each other around the food "mmm mmm good". Then they laugh and wink. On TWO occasions I witnessed food that had fallen on the floor be picked right up and put back into the food for guests to eat. NEVER, I repeat, NEVER WILL I EVER travel with Carnival again!! Read Less

This was my 2nd cruise with Carnival Imagination. Let me start by saying, those who are looking for the ultimate luxury ship with high-end food and such, don't book this ship. This ship is the fun, party ship! Of course, you can relax by the pool, get a massage, enjoy the unlimited food just like any other ship. I've read comments on people complaining about the noise, the quality of the ship (yes, its a bit dated!), or the buffet wasn't good. Look, you are paying a very great rate to travel on Carnival. I feel it's a bargain and I enjoy my time on the ship. If I want to pay more for a cruise, I'd book on another line. I enjoy the party atmosphere, everyone on the ship is having a great time. And met some amazing new friends from Cruise Critic on the boat!! Hey Natalie and Jessica!!!! From the moment you get on the ship, the crew is so friendly. I was there back in March and I had the same room steward. I couldn't believe she remembered my name (Thanks Tapa!) Also, my favorite bartender, Christina, remembered me. AMAZING! So, if you're looking for a fun time, let your hair down, enjoy the food, the views, the ship, I say book it! I'm actually booking again for November!! Thanks again Carnival for another great time!!! My Best Friend of 30 years and I decided to take this cruise to celebrate our friendship. We are both in our early 40's and had an amazing time meeting wonderful people along the way. Everyone is so friendly and we quickly made friends. There really is something for everyone. The ship is well laid out and the location of our cabin mid-ship made it easy to get everywhere. ENTERTAINMENT: We absolutely LOVED the entertainment on board. The Diva and Epic Rock Shows are a must see! Those entertainers are extremely talented. I was impressed. We Loved the Cruise Director Peter and Andrew who hosted many of the events. They definitely kept me entertained and wanting to come back for more. The club on board was packed all three nights. We had a blast dancing. FOOD: I am not a huge Buffet fan so we ate all of our meals in the Pride Dining Room, Guys Burgers and the Blue Iguana. Everything was delicious! We had Anytime Dining. We never had to wait for a table. We LOVED our Waiter -Yudi from Indonesia. He had our whole table of 8 up and dancing nd always had a smile on his face. BARS: My Two Favorite Bars had to be the Alchemy Bar and the Atrium Bar. Best Service but with that said they are understaffed. It took quite a while to get a drink. CABIN: We had the FTTF and had access right away to our Cabin. It was clean and perfect size for the two of us. Ray our Room Steward made sure we always had clean towels. ENSENADA: We had planned to stay on board & relax. However, after meeting some amazing new friends, we decided to head to Papas & Beers. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed watching all the craziness around me. All in all, this was an amazing trip and I would recommend this ship to anyone of my friends and family that like to have fun. In fact, I plan to bring my Hubby next February for a Couples Cruise and the Kids (ages 11,11 & 15) next summer. However, we plan to do the 4 day cruise. I really missed not going to Catalina. Ensenada was great also. rented a suv from fiesta rental for about $70 for the day and travel to La Bufadora. It was ok, the water spout wasn't high enough during the time we was there..watch out for the vendors at La Bufadora, they are very pushy to sale you something. We chose this cruise because it was a great price, a good amount of days to try out for a first cruise, and I am glad we did. The ports weren't amazing (Baja California), but the boat was. So we spent two hours in Catalina and 1.5 hours in Ensenada. We then returned the boat where we had things to ourselves, like the adult serenity deck. I got a ton of relaxation in, which was my ultimate goal, added with some fun times. The staff was top notch. I swear we had the best dinner staff on the whole ship. The staff was the highlight of the cruise, our room steward was awesome, dinner was great. My only complaint: the serenity deck for adults needs to be bigger!!! MUCH bigger. And it needs its own bar. The deck was always too full to really enjoy. The hot tubs were always full. There is a shortage of hot tubs on the ship as a whole. Otherwise, we were very happy. The food they serve you at dinner, etc., is better than the buffet food. Entertainment was about what I expected. I would go again if I were able to secure the awesome price. Read Less

We are a couple in our mid fifties, wife is retired but I am still working with limited time off. I need to bid my vacation dates each November for the entire next year. I put in for this week but as it approached, I wanted to change it to later in the year. Unfortunately, by the time I was notified that I could not change it, we only had days to try to book a cruise. Longer cruises out of Galveston were full or only had upper/lower cabins remaining. We decided to roll the dice and use our travel benefits to get out to the west coast. We booked this cruise because we had previously done a short Ensenada cruise on the Carnival Paradise many years ago and enjoyed it and this one had the bonus of a port call in Catalina which is a place we wanted to visit. I watched to loads from our home airport to LAX for weeks and was confident that we would be able to get out and back. As it turned out, seats were no problem but the weather gave us a bit of a delay. Still we arrived at LAX at 8 in the morning the day prior to boarding. I didn't preplan a hotel room since our travel plans were flexible but was able to secure a room at the Courtyard by Marriott through an interlink provider for a reasonable rate. We took the hotel shuttle, and although our room was not ready, we were able to check in and store our luggage. There is a shuttle bus from LAX hotels down to Manhattan Beach and that is how we spent our day. Was a beautiful day for walking the beach and finding a nice lunch. In the afternoon, we went back to LAX, got into our room and then walked over to Ralph's for some fruit, salad, cheese and wine for a light in-room dinner. Cruise morning, we were up early, walked over to Panera for a light breakfast, stopped into CVS for some last minute items and returned to the hotel to check out. In the past, I have been satisfied with the service of Prime Time Shuttle from LAX to Long Beach and San Pedro. As I tried to set up on line with Prime Time, I grew very frustrated with their website. I decided to try Super Shuttle and their website was much easier to use. We received our confirmation number and checked in at their kiosk outside the American terminal. We were in a van and on our way in less than 20 minutes. We had arranged for a 1:30 designated check-in time for the ship and expected to kill some time as we arrived a little after 11am. The very first Carnival employee we encountered told us to go ahead and get in line. It was hardly a line, aside from a bit of a slow down going through security, we barely stopped from the time we got out of the van until we dropped our carry-ons in our cabin (which was ready for us). It was by far the fastest and easiest check-in of any cruise. We were cabin M45, main deck, interior. The cabin was spacious for two, the bed was made up a king as requested and there was ample closet and storage space. We tend to book interior cabins for the value but also enjoy the cave-like darkness and this ship had very good air conditioning. We met our cabin steward and were warmly welcomed. Since we have previously sailed on Paradise, Fascination and Elation, there were no surprises on Imagination although we really appreciated to Funship 2.0 upgrades. The ship was in excellent condition and I noticed ongoing cleaning and maintenance everywhere. Our first lunch was a Guy's burger. It was excellent and we enjoyed it at the Red Frog Rum Bar which became our go-to bar with the delightful Orathai tending bar and quickly learning our favorites. We took all of dinners in the main dining room and had Your Time Dining. We have always asked to share or join a table and find it a great way to meet different people. On night, we shared with a very nice couple, two nights we were just put at a two top and the last night, we were at a table for eight with two other women who only spoke Spanish. We still had a great time with pointy talkie and enjoying drinks together. Food was a real mixed bag. The prime rib on cruise elegant night was superb and the escargot was some of the best we have had. On sail away from Ensenada, ceviche was featured and it was excellent. Other meals, were more of a miss. All fish we tried was overlooked and dry. Pasta was just not hot. Still, service was superb throughout and we had no problem with ordering wine by the glass through our Cheers program. I like a seated breakfast and always enjoy joining a large table of ten to talk about the day and meet new people. This process was broken on this cruise. Every morning, we would show up and ask to join a table. Invariably, we would be seated at a two top surrounded by eight or ten other two tops in a particular area. We noticed that the service team would wait until the hostesses had filled all the two tops before they began taking orders. This made breakfast a very tedious and time consuming affair. The food was excellent with eggs Benedict, hash and eggs and steak and eggs. On sea day, we took our lunch at the Blue Iguana for tacos. There seemed to be a breakdown on the tortilla oven and the line took over 45 minutes. We looked through the buffet but weren't tempted by anything. In Ensenada, we had some great seafood off the ship but came back early and had a late afternoon pizza and enjoyed it very much. We also found that in the afternoon on port days, there was no one in the Serenity area so on of us would fetch cocktails and the other would go to the salad bar in the buffet area and load up a plate with olives, pickles, cheese cubes and sliced salami for a nice appetizer plate. We went to both production shows. Didn't care for Divas. I guess we're too old to be familiar with a lot of the music. Epic Rock was better, we knew all the songs but some them I didn't like 30-40 years ago and haven't improved with age. We didn't see any comedians and although we liked the live music we saw, it didn't seem to be as prevelant as previous cruises. I went to one trivia but two others showed up and it never happened. There was a veterans' gathering that was very well done. My wife went to morning stretch and some Pilates and said it was well done. I ran on the outdoor jogging track on the sports deck. Facilities were well maintained. Aside from the Red Frog, we were very excited about the Alchemy Bar and it did not disappoint. With Cheers, it is a great value. In Catalina, we rented a golf cart and drove their designated tour around Avalon. No hassles, we paid $90 in cash, drove for an hour and got $45 back. Then we walked around the beautiful village. In Ensenada, we just strolled over to seafood market for fish and shrimp tacos and cervezas. Disembarkation was a breeze. No huge lines, we carried off in a matter of minutes. Our only delay was in waiting for a Super Shuttle to LAX. Fortunately, we waited less than 45 mins and were at the airport in plenty of time to get on an earlier flight home. This a very well priced vacation for anyone short on time. Read Less

Fun quick cruise out of Long Beach. The cruise was what we expected it to be based on our research beforehand. Getting on the ship was so simple. One grip is that they did not have anyone outside the elevators at the parking garage telling us where to drop of our bags, so we got all the way to the security checkpoint before someone told us we were supposed to drop them inside the garage on the bottom level. This is an area you don't see if you come down the elevator. Once we dropped off our bags, we went straight through the check-in line and were on board within 15 minutes total. The entertainment was really lacking compared to other cruises we have been on. We were able to directly compare to our last cruise considering they did the exact same shows we saw on the previous cruise. The food was pretty normal for what we have had on previous cruises, however the service in the dining rooms was a bit lacking. It appeared as if the waiters were so stressed with all the people they had to handle that they were not too interested in you directly. I highly recommend getting a burger from Guy's Burger Joint, they are so good. We were able to have a lot of fun wandering around and up on the top deck playing mini golf. This is definitely a cruise where you create your own fun and entertainment, don't expect the staff to do it for you. If you are good with that, you will have a good time on this cruise. Read Less

Bonding experience for four sisters. More about the time together than the destination. Although disappointed in the food choices at dinner, and the bathing facilities, the service was outstanding. Love our cabin stewartess, and our dining room servers at 8:15 table 308. I literally fell in front of the ship officers. Although, I was helped to my feet, it would have been nice had someone followed up to make sure I was ok. I also had an anxiety attack and had to visit the medical facilities. I will say the service there was excellent. All in all a very good cruise. Compared to a 7 day cruise we took a couple years ago I just didn't feel the dinner choices were that exceptional. More like an everyday lower end restaurant menu. I expected more chef specialties. Even the appetizers were not that exciting. The soups I tried were very good and actually more exciting than the main dishes Read Less

I felt the staff were overworked and mistreated, I just absolutely hated the overall experience and would never travel on a carnival ship again, next time I'm sailing with Princess. The positive for me was that it was smooth sailing I didn't get sea sick, the check in and out was quick, all of the staff were very kind and friendly, thank god the food was terrible because I lost three pounds. In Ensenada we chose to go on the ATV wine country tour excursion. We had a blast and would definitely recommend this for groups who like thrilling activities. We definitely noticed all the hard work behind the scenes to have the cruise go smoothly and are very thankful. If you are over 21, we recommend purchasing the cheers drink package. This will save you money in the end! Overall we had a great experience on the Carnival Imagination and hope to get the chance to go on another Carnival Cruise soon! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had limited time. We had two cabins, V17 & V40. Embarkation was a "snap" - mainly because we are Platinum cruisers. Carnival treats its Platinum & Diamond members pretty well. The ship is showing its age. As far as the meals are concerned I was not impressed. Carnival continues to "cut-back" on selections and quality - I was disappointed with the dinner selections - My wife and two sons did not share that opinion. The buffet was the worst I have seen in years - but we only ate there a couple of times for lunch & twice for breakfast - pancakes/waffles were cold both times. Because the Imagination is an older and smaller ship there are only 2 buffet lines and the both served the same food. There was also an omelet bar which was also the deli during lunch/dinner. I give the buffet 2 stars & the dining room (Spirit 8:15 seating) 4 stars. The food alone I would give 3 stars but the service I give 5 stars. Our head waiter, Guillermo, was one of the best, if not the best waiter we have had on any of our cruises. Entertainment was okay. They had 2 comedians the entire trip but I enjoyed their 18+ shows very much. I played a lot of poker - I even won a seat in the $175,000 Carnival Poker Pro tournament in August. so I booked our cruise on the Dream (3rd cruise on the Dream). Debarkation was also a snap - guess why? All in all it was a pleasant & relaxing cruise - the weather was horrible, but that's not Carnivals fault..... or is it???? Read Less

A 4-Day cruise for under $300 per passenger, good value for an Ocean view cabin. Port of calls were Catalina Island and Ensenada. I wasn't impressed with either port. The first day is a sea day taking a trip south down the coast into Mexico then back north to Catalina for the second day. Catalina had experienced a lot of rain and was greener than normal. Very pretty for March. Not much to do in Catalina. We rented a golf cart and drove around. The views were very nice overlooking Avalon, Avalon Bay and the Pacific where our cruise ship anchored. We tendered in to land from the ship. The third day at Ensenada was as I remembered. Dirty streets downtown with shops and restaurants I really didn't want to go to. It would have been better to have had planned excursions in both ports. The ship is a bit smaller with a little less to do. The cabins are mostly Inside and Ocean View. No balconies to speak of, glorified suites looked similar to customary balconies. The food was just a notch down from Carnival past cruises. Steak and prime rib were a bit tough. Less entertainment but, the shows they did have were good. The service was about as good as it gets. Guest Services had a young lady named Sarah that was wonderful. Our room steward, John Paul was very good. The bartenders were the only rude people I met and they weren't that rude. Inattentive is more like it. I cruised with my grandson who loved the cruise. He spent most of his time at Camp Ocean and the pool. He made many new friends from different states and countries. Embarkation was very good. Debarkation was okay. Had to wait awhile for checked bags. All in all this was maybe just a little better than average cruising. I did enjoy myself and for the value paid, I would take the cruise again. Read Less

This cruise was excellent. Food was as expected, only ate 2 night in the dining room and although the first night was very good the 2nd night was a disappointment. But the wait staff was excellent both times. Our room was clean, we lucked out with good weather if you can forgive the first two days of fog, nothing that Carnival had control over. Getting onboard and leaving the ship was awesome as we chose to carry our own bags on and off. Will be doing this cruise in the future and have already sent friends and family on the search for the perfect cruise. Many memories from this cruise for our family. Looking forward to our next cruise with Carnival. OH, a secret (??) is it a secret? The Maya Hotel right in the port at Long Beach offers an excellent night before the cruise stay and a stay and park package that allowed us to walk from the hotel (shuttles are available) board the ship and walk back to the hotel after and we were on the road headed back home before most people were getting off the ship. We were invited to join family on this cruise. I did not have high expectations going in as I had heard negative things about Carnival. Also we just had a bad experience on Norwegian last month. That can be seen in another review. Much to my surprise this cruise was GREAT! The ship was so clean and the staff were constantly polishing and picking up after people. Our room was always ready for us and the room steward was always friendly and knew us by name in the hallway. The room was easy to move around, unlike our "other" cruise. Dining was pleasant in the dining room. Especially liked the entertainment the servers provided. We saw two comedy shows and they were excellent! We did not get off in Catalina as we have seen it before. We took our own tour of Ensenada for $15. We felt the charge for water in the room was reasonable compared to last cruise. You could also bring on soda, which we did not know about. Especially liked Guy's hamburgers & fry's. Time it right and there is no lines. Always food somewhere to be had. The entire staff was always smiling and friendly. I cannot find anything bad to say about this cruise. It would be nice if they still had lobster night like the old days, but I understand that is a thing of the past. I would highly recommend this cruise!! Read Less

I was going to have a great time, party, drink, eat and more! I met some really great people from all over. I can't say enough about the wonderful crew on the ship. From our room steward to the bartenders, always calling me by first name! That's impressive. The dining room was great, good food options every night. I loved the dancing and singing waiters..very fun! The casino is fun, if you play, but it's a bit smokey. Take some Febreeze with you. Make sure to hang out with the Piano Man and request a few songs..make sure you tip him. If you enjoy cocktails like me, make sure to get the all you can drink package! It's worth it...oh yeah, don't forget the advil.. :) Read Less

This was the first cruise for my brother and his wife. We chose this one because they didn't have time for a longer one and it was convenient leaving from Los Angeles. Embarkation went very well compared to our last Carnival cruise. We were assigned a specific time and had a very short wait. We had outside cabins, which were large enough with plenty of storage, Our steward was excellent, keeping our ice pail full and our room clean and tidy. He was friendly and always greeted us by name. We appreciated receiving two large bottles of water in our room since we are returning passengers, and we pre-purchased water for my brother's cabin for a very small charge. My brother paid extra for an upgrade which put them near an open area which had a very loud celebration for Mardi Gras one night and kept them awake. Our room on deck 5 was quiet. We enjoyed great service in the dining room but found the food average, except one night when we paid $20 for excellent steak and lobster dinners. My brother loved the chocolate melting cake, and I think he had it every night, sometimes along with another dessert. The buffet was also average, not as good as Princess and HAL for example, but we usually found something we enjoyed. My husband and brother loved Guy's Burgers (although I thought they were a little greasy), and I particularly liked the fish tacos at the Blue Iguana. The entertainment was not really to my liking, with Divas and Rock of 70s and 80s. I recognize that the dancers were very energetic and skilled, but the music wasn't my favorite. There was not much that interested me during the day, but I love to sit looking out on the water or reading or visiting, so I was able to entertain myself. My brother enjoyed the casino. Service was good, and the staff were friendly and helpful, especially our cabin steward whom I mentioned before. We had a good time in Catalina poking around in the souvenir shops and taking a tour of the casino. The casino has a fascinating history and is quite beautiful and well worth the time and $11 (I think) that we spent. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather. We took an excursion from an on-shore vendor to La Bufadora Geyser and shopping area. The scenery is beautiful there. My sister-in-law loved haggling with the vendors and came away with several bargains. I don't think I would take this cruise again, but my brother and sister-in-law enjoyed themselves, and that was the main purpose. Read Less

I'm not a novice to cruising having been on at least six other cruises on three other lines (Princess, NCL and Royal). We wanted a quick getaway for our 40th anniversary and we hadn't been to Catalina Island. Carnival was the only option out of LA at the time, so we ignored what people had told us about Carnival and booked the 5 night cruise. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the other lines, but I won't bother with Carnival again. I gave it an overall 3 star rating because somethings were pretty good and others were quite negative. At best, this was a 3 star vacation. Somethings just went wrong and it wasn't Carnival's fault that it rained all day in Catalina, or that Ensenada is pretty boring. But several things were definitely cruiseline specific. 1) Look at all the fine print before you buy anything, because you never get anything for free. For instance, the soda package will get you warm canned soda over ice in a glass. If you want the mug, you pay separately for it. You will be asked to sign a bar tab for each drink even though it's a zero amount. In contrast, Royal Caribbean had Coke's new Freestyle machines that dispenses the soda into your pre-paid specially coded mugs that came with your soda package. 2) We never met our room steward. He didn't introduce himself and we didn't know who he was. There were never any towel animals or other fun things we got on other cruises. The beds were made and the bathrooms clean, so I guess there's that. 3) The food was very average. Roast chicken and pork chops vs. beef wellington or lamb chops on other cruise lines. The fun of cruise food is that you can try new foods and get something else if you don't like it. The dining room food was bland and uninteresting, including the dessert menu, which, with the exception of the pie, seemed the same every night. The buffet was reasonable, but seemed closed much of the time. I'm used to nearly 24 hour access to food, but most of the buffet closed down by 8:30-9:00. If you went to the early show, you were out of luck afterward unless you wanted plain soft serve in a cone. 4) Speaking of shows, I was only able to go to the show on the last night. It was really good, so that was a highlight. It was an ode to rock and roll and the singers/dancers nailed it. I'm a child of the 70's so I thoroughly enjoyed the music. Other than the nightly shows, I thought there was very few worthwhile things to do on ship. 5) I've never stood in lines (key word stood and yes, plural lines) to embark. Usually it's a 15 minute process on other ships, but it took over an hour to board this ship even though we were early for our predetermined boarding time of 1:00. BTW, they never checked anyone's boarding time. 6) I think the small size of the boat may have also been a factor because there were very limited items in just a couple of shops. We have purchased a few cameras and other photo-related items on our cruises, but this had no camera shop and only a few go-Pro related items. If you forget something, it will be hard to find it on this ship. 7) Finally, a word about the kids. We are 60ish, have four grown kids and 10 grandkids. We take our grandkids on vacation with us and have a blast. Noise and chaos follow kids and if you are looking for an adults only vacation - go to Sandals. Carnival is KNOWN for it's family friendly atmosphere, so don't complain about the kids and don't rank Carnival with a 1 star just because you're annoyed with the kids. They are on vacation, too. That being said, child rearing has many cultural differences and some keep tighter reign on their kids than others. I saw small kids (under 10, some 5ish) wandering the ship by themselves, while others were kept close and were well-behaved. There are kids with varying degrees of self-control on every cruise.
