This was our tenth Viking trip and one of our best if not the best. We chose this trip because we had not been to central Germany, including Berlin, and it afforded us a post cruse extension to Poland. The shore excursions were terrific. One of the guests opined that the trip was equal to a graduate history class and I agree. The on ship activities were great as well the dining and beverages. The meals were prepared for the regions in which we traveled. The wines were also tailored for the local areas. The ship’s officers and crew were excellent. We believe the Hotel Manager and Cruse Director were outstanding and could not have been better. The only issue is that future cruses cannot match this experience. We are now in the process of selecting our next Viking trip. Our booking number was: xxxxxxx. I ask Viking to contact us if they are interested in further commentary. Thank you Viking Thank you for the opportunity to provide this rating. Read Less

We chose this route because we are interested in Reformation history, medieval architecture, and we had been on Danube, Rhine, Rhone, and Main. Astrild is smaller (94 guests) than other Viking longboats but has all the same amenities in suites, dining room, lounge, etc. The balcony (rooms on the right side; rooms on the left have French doors and a rail but no place to sit) is actually useful on this route because the schedule means that you are frequently cruising in day light so can relax in the deckchairs and enjoy the pastoral views. Smokers gather at the rear rooftop so chose a room mid-ship or front to avoid the smoke smells. I liked the undemanding approach to tours - you head to the bus without any loud announcements, participate in just how much you want to, and there's always a more robust option with extra walking, etc. We were delighted with several surprises like Matt cruise director, leading us on an evening stroll through Torgue after dinner one night. This historic itinerary is filled with several over night stops allowing for time off the ship on your own in the evenings. The ship is always docked in a town. Guides are very knowledgeable and often have personal/family connections to the stormy history from the wars. Evening entertainment frequently included music and dancing although there was no dance floor aboard. Food was presented well and was fine but not shockingly yummy. 2 things that were a miss for us was the lack of a somalia (true! a couple bar tenders but no one who had been trained in wines to assist guests. Secondly, a silly practice of not serving tea in a pot. They had tea pots and when pressed would get one for you but not without being ugly about the request. A little thing that had a big negative impact on a lot of Brits, Aussies and Canucks! **The post-cruise trip to Poland was fantastic. I wish I could remember the director's name. She was so good. A former teacher, she passed out maps while she shared details of what we were going to see. And gave us treats from little towns and even a vodka tasting on board! She was very organized and friendly. What a treat. Read Less

We had not been on a Viking Cruise prior to this trip and had always been told how marvelous they are. I can now fully understand the comments. Never having been in Berlin we were looking forward to seeing the city of such important parts of history. Our tour guide had lived behind the Berlin Wall. Her stories became a tremendous lesson of perseverance of life as she shared of her family before, during and after the wall came down. History previously read became alive in most excursions in Berlin and other cities. This was the smallest Viking ship, but lacked nothing. The service was wonderful and no details were left out. The food was delicious and much more than needed, but oh so enjoyable around a table with strangers who became friends. A highlight of the ship was to be in the wheelhouse to talk with the captain and learn details of this smallest ship and bits of information of the river and why the ship was the smallest in the Viking line. Our visits in other ports and tours were educational, fulfilling, beautiful and not to be forgotten. It was wonderful to stand in Martin Luther’s home and be in churches and buildings which carried importantance in the history of the Reformation. Having a history buff as a tour director helped prepare us for all we would see and experience. The stories of triumphs and the stories of suffering were shared in each stop. The beauty of architecture and the beauty of people. All imprinted in the memory. We have already booked a cruise for May of this year and the next year. Such a joy! Thank you Viking Cruise. So many people had recommended taking a Viking cruise and now I know why! I can't think of anything that would have made this trip more enjoyable . . . From the embarkation to the disembarkation hotel rooms everything was wonderful! The accommodations on board were VERY nice - comfy bed & pillows and I loved having my morning coffee on my veranda. The food was delicious and the wine served with the meals was wonderful. Loved that the did a German night so we could sample all sorts of German fare complete with beer and a band! Our waiters and waitresses were very attentive and I was given special attention by the chef due to my lactose intolerance. The tours were informative & I like how there are at least 2 if not 3 different tours for each port depending on how much you wanted to walk or ride. What a wonderful way to learn about history!! The scenery on the Elbe was magnificent and with the smaller river, the scenery on both shores was so close. I booked another Viking tour as soon as I got home! Read Less

I picked this cruise over the others because of my schedule. I booked rather late and availability on other itineraries were limited. However I do not regret the choice at all. Booking process was simple and straight forward. There were constant email communication and reminders from Viking. Documents were well prepared (and if I may say, a bit extravagant) and delivered to our home (unlike other cruise lines). Flights were scheduled with plenty of time for lay over. The pre and post hotels were modern and conveniently located. Embarkation (and disembarkation) was quick and easy. The ship is rather new and well kept. It is smaller than rest of the fleet. The atmosphere was therefore more intimate. Food was excellent as always (this was not my 1st Viking cruise). Staff were friendly and courteous. Service was outstanding. Excursions and enrichment activities were well planned and informative. The ports of call are rich in history. Overall it was an excellent adventure. Read Less

The trip offered 2 nights in Berlin and 2 nights in Prague. I wanted to see those cities combined with a river cruise. The Elbe River is not a commercial waterway like the Rhine and offered an almost private cruise of the countryside. The cruise was very relaxing as well as informative of the cities we visited. The river depth was low and we could not make the last port. But that really only translated into a longer bus ride to Prague which was scenic. Overall I’d recommend this cruise for people wanting to visit Berlin and Prague as well as visiting the cities along the river. The side trips available were also attractive - many people went on to Krakow and Warsaw. I’m Berlin there was a 4 hour river tour through Berlin that was interesting to see the city from the water view perspective. Chef Oliver excelled as he prepared local foods as we moved along the river. His personality is infectious- you feel like he’s cooking for a family get together rather than a cruise. He is an asset beyond his pay. He is the type of person that makes your clients to want to cruise with Viking again! Sergio and Jamie were outstanding. Jamie went way out of his way to show guest the sites. One day in Prague he walked 6 of us to restaurant for lunch that offered real local cuisine. We would not have found this place on our own and the restaurant experience was fantastic. I did compliment Sergio on his staff because they all attentive to the cruisers. Our housekeeping person (his name escapy me) was over the top as exceeding our needs. Just little things like finding an extra blanket or water it was like he was pulling it out of his back pocket. This is our 3rd Viking river cruise and it's just as good as the first! This was the Elegant Elbe package and it lived up to Viking standards. The couple of days are in Berlin then you are bussed to the ship on the Elbe. The Elbe is a natural river with no locks so it's a bit shallow and we did run out of water to sail in by Dresden, just one port shy of our goal. Nonetheless, Viking maintained their high standards and took care of everything. The Elbe ship is a smaller version of the regular Viking river ship but is every bit as comfortable and luxurious as the bigger ones. The cabins are exactly the same as the bigger river ships, there is just less of them. I believe the capacity is 95 guests. The rest of the ship layout is the same as the bigger ships with the lounge and dinning room being a bit smaller but definitely the right size for the amount of people on the ship. Viking has revised their menu scheme this year to include more local flavors than before and it proved popular with the guests we spoke to during the cruise. As always, regardless of the dish, Viking culinary standards are very high and it was a treat to eat dinner and lunch on the ship each day. The shore excursions are well thought out and precisely planned. You have plenty of time to wander about and the busses used by Viking are top notch. Our favorite was the town walking tour of Torgau after dinner one night. Very relaxing, quaint little town. As usual with Viking, the crew from top to bottom was incredibly helpful, friendly and provided for our every need. Read Less

My 3rd Viking River Cruise. Just booked a Viking Ocean cruise to Australia/Tasmania/New Zealand for Jan 20, 2020. I must have liked the cruise from Prague to Budapest if I'm booking another so soon. I'm not crazy about the size of the rooms, but we spend very little time acually in the room. The greatest plus on these cruises is the crew. There is nothing they won't do to make your experience excellent. The bar and wait staff work very hard and make a point to remember names and likes/dislikes. There are no broadway shows or casinos, but there is plenty to keep you busy. Everyone finds another couple onboard that you have something in common with... By the second day, you will recognize at least half the passengers and will "pair up" with one or more other couples. Most passengers are quite financially stable and most are retired. You'll have a lot in common with most if you can afford these cruises. The meals are excellent. They are not stingy with beer or wine during meals and the bar has an excellent selection of fine wines; many from the country you're traveling through. Our cabin steward was excellent and we always felt safe on board and during the daily tours. You should at least try one cruise, maybe a modest cabin and up your choices on your 2nd cruise. I really believe that you'll have fun and enjoy the people you'll meet. Read Less

We choose the Elegant Elbe because of the cities we would see, the days before and after in Prague and Berlin, and also because we wanted to see this part of Europe. Since we had already had one Viking River Cruise, we knew we wanted to cruise with them again...our first trip, two years ago was also amazing. One of the best things about cruising with Viking are the friendships we made on the trip. The meals were delicious--loved the many choices, too. At mealtimes, there was plenty of time to get acquainted with others on the boat. It was nice not having seating assignments, and also having the choice of where to eat...we enjoyed having breakfast on the Acquivet Terrace and watching the scenery as we ate. The crew members on the ship were also very accommodating---everyone made sure that all we having a good, but safe time, too. Read Less

Chose this cruise from a Viking email with a great price. Everything was excellent except the return home. Our flight was late getting to Frankfurt and our flight to Philadelphia left us. We had to wait several hours for a flight to Washington and then another flight to Philadelphia. The overall quality of the cruise however was excellent. The ship and cabins were very lovely and cozy. The included shore excursions were excellent. The entertainment in the lounges was very good. The optional tours in each port were well thought out and very well run. We explored Berlin before we departed and loved that city. The service on the ship was excellent including being interviewed and welcomed by one of the officers interested in marketing the cruise to African-Americans and how did we find out about it The dining room experience and wine tastings were a nice exploration. I even bought a case of one of the wines when I returned home! Read Less

We chose this cruise never having been to these parts of Europe. Our parents had done many Viking cruises and always gave them high scores. Every detail was covered and it was nice to be so well taken care of in every aspect. The food aboard was truly excellent with plenty of choices. Staff was genuinely gracious and knowledgeable. The guides on shore tours were so willing to share their passion for their places and often included little interesting tidbits to enhance the experiences. Shipboard entertainment was fun and definitely created friendships among passengers. I would go on a Viking River Cruise again. I'm not one for the large cruise ships so this was perfect. I was impressed that provisions were always made for passengers with special needs or diminished ability to walk or climb especially at Bad Schandu where there was a lot of stairs. The exercise was invigorating after indulging in the breakfast buffet! Lovely to be greeted at the airport by the Viking Cruise staff in signature red jackets. They have really covered all the details from start to finish. Read Less

This was my first river cruise & I was a tag-a-long with friends that selected this cruise because we went during 500th anniversary of the Reformation. I loved everything about this cruise, but especially the smaller size ship, the attention to every detail and comfort crew (whether it was dining, housekeeping or greeting from the captain). Every time we arrived at the ship, from initial embarkation to each time back from an excursion, the crew greeted us back and gave everyone a special treat like heavenly chocolate or a warm shot of a delicious drink to warm us up on a cold day. With cooler fall weather, when we weren’t dining or on an excursion, I spent lots of time in the lounge with other passengers, all who were interesting and fun to be with. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and there were so many enjoyable and/or educational things to do. We had wonderful local tour guides, and our program director, was just amazing, but as were all the crew. I loved the couple days in Berlin and Prague, before and after the river cruise, but didn’t care so much for the Prague hotel that was not as close to the downtown as I thought we would be. But, this was at the end, and I was looking forward to getting home. I enjoyed this so much that I’m already signed up for two more cruises with Viking. Read Less

Everything about Viking from the initial booking through to departure is first class all the way. What better way is there to spend 10 days being pampered, well fed with Michelin Star food in great company. We try to find fault but impossible. Again made great friends with Americans and English fellow passengers. Never short of a conversation, Trump, Brexit etc. Rik's Music Quiz was a real onboard highlight. We teamed up with 4 delightful American friends, Jamie, Cheryl, Joe and Beth. As 'Allied Forces' Team name, Although a bit rowdy at times, fantastic fun. We annihilated the opposition. We achieved the highest number of points any team had achieved for a long time. A glass of bubbly to celebrate our victory was well deserved. Next cruise to Vietnam/Cambodia already booked with Viking for November 2018. Booking so far in advance ensures we get the cabin and cruise we want. The only small complaint I would have is cruises are booked up immediately the new brochure is out, if not before. We have 2 additional cruises next year with other lines. We are hoping to slot in another Viking cruise, this time an ocean destination in between. Most of them are fully booked already. A great attraction is that Viking offer £100.00 cruise vouchers worth double at the time of booking. There is no restriction with other offers. These possess an indefinite validity and can be given as presents. We always indulge in these purchases. Read Less

My husband and I chose the Elbe river cruise as it coincided with the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation and we liked that the itinerary, among other ports, would visit Wittenberg, the home of Martin Luther. We also liked the precruise days in Prague and postcruise days in Berlin, and we added an additional 2 postcruise days in Berlin. We were traveling with one other couple; friends we met on our first Viking river cruise. The Viking Astrild is the smallest ship we have been on, but still very lovely. The meals on the ship were all outstanding, as was the service. This was our 5th river cruise with Viking and somehow with each cruise the already terrific service goes up a notch. And, when we returned from a tour, we were greeted with a nice treat, maybe a small pastry or a warm cider, often offered by the Captain himself. The captain of the Astrild was more visible and approachable than any we have sailed with before. We had less enjoyment of our ports than we might have, as the weather was quite rainy and chilly, but, of course, that is out of Viking's control. We tried to make the most of our time in each port, however, and I think we did. The towns of Wittenberg, Meissen, and Dresden are very lovely and I just wish we had had more time to explore there. Our postcruise hotel in Berlin was the Hilton, and it was very well located to restaurants, sightseeing and shopping. It was a very nice hotel as well and our stay included a bountiful breakfast buffet each morning. Read Less

After a wonderful tour of Berlin, a rowing experience in Dessau and a visit to Wittenberg, our Elb experience began. With about 100 passengers, we met many great people. The captain, crew cruise director really made this a memorable trip. Never was there a "down" time. Our chef was always available to make all dining delicious and with local fares. Because the river was low, everybody was concerned we might disembark early. However, the captain kept us informed that his goal was to make sure we keep to the original schedule. Sure enough, after a rainy night, we were informed all is as planned. Everyone thanked him. The last evening's Czech dining event was truly delicious and memorable. Can't wait for another Viking trip, but the Asrild set the bar quite high. We particularly appreciated the dining options and locations. I highly recommend the optional Silver Spirits package. This is the perfect cruise for those who want to spend time on land in major cities and still experience a cruise. It began with 3 days at the Prague Hilton with excursions and oversight by our wonderful cruise director, Claudia Diederix. Then a pleasant motor coach ride to embark on our lovely ship and start a leisurely cruise down the Elbe with scenic cruising through Saxon Switzerland and excursions to the Bastei, to Miesen and porcelain making to Wittenberg. Then tours to Prince Franz palace and of Frederick the Great's summer palace and on into Berlin with a egG at the Intercontinental and two days of sightseeing in Berlin. It a great adventure with wonderful service all the way through. All of the others on the cruise as well as the crew spoke English. In each port there were optional tours available as well as on port entertainment, music or lectures dealing with the region we were in or it's history. The top deck of the ship is a sundeck, partly covered which is perfect for walking, lounging, or playing miniature golf. The ship is small, accommodating only 92 guests. This trip was first time for many of the stops and we were well pleased with the accommodations and quality of the tours. The cruise director was exceptional in many ways with a masters degree in european history. We were pleasantly surprised that the food quality and other services matched the other river boats we have been on (4 of the long boats). We have used other river cruise lines and Viking is very competitive in price, quality of visits, and ship board amenities. This trip took us into Berlin and Prague for about 3 days each and these great cities were connected by the Elbe River which is smaller than many other rivers thus the smaller ship. We really liked the extended time in Berlin and Prague where we stayed in quality hotels and did day trips in and around the city. Viking was quite visible in the hotels and led many tours of these cities yet we had sufficient time for our personal agenda and the staff helped us with shuttle, taxi and public transportation. We have enjoyed a family cruise offered by Tauck and it was excellent. Viking does not offer that option and the travelers on our ship (like other river cruises we have used) focused on English speakers and middle age and up. I did not notice if the Astrild had an elevator but is just two levels of rooms so there are less steps. I gave this ship a low rating on fitness and recreation since there is no fitness room, no bicycles and no swimming pool/hot tub as are found on other non-Viking ships. There is still walking on the top deck and off boat walking/jogging as the traveler might want. Read Less

Viking Astrild is a great small ship. Cruising the Elbe was relaxing and scenic. The crew were top notch, starting with the captain. Very friendly and involved in daily ship activities. Personalized service in all respects. The menu is not as extensive as ocean cruise ships but the food was tasty and reflected the countries we were seeing. Our program director did a fabulous job. We chose this cruise because we wanted to see Prague, which contains an ancestral palace which belonged to our family. The fact that this cruise also stopped in Wittenberg, clinched the deal, since we are Lutheran, and especially interested in the reformation. Between our cruise director, who has a master's degree in German history, and the many tour guides, we were treated to a historical and cultural smorgasbord. It was interesting to have some guides who grew up in West Germany, and some from East Germany, and hear, not only the history, but their personal experiences. We were impressed with all our guides. Also, there were usually choices for each tour. You could pick an all walking tour, bus + walking, or leisurely tour in Dresden, for example. We felt very welcome everywhere we went. We have been on tours where you are overbooked, and didn't feel that way on this tour. They seemed to know exactly when to give us some free time, and anticipate our needs. There was some free time in every port, and optional tours. We started the tour not knowing how to gain access to the palace in Prague, and through the help of our cruise director, were able to secure a private tour with the head curator, and hire a car to take us directly to its door. This was our first Viking river cruise, and we felt the service was very good. The food was excellent, and with our shipboard credit through AAA, we were able to upgrade our wine and include extra after-dinner drinks and a folk dinner outside of Prague. When we first saw the river, we were shocked at how small it was, but we were able to complete 95% of the cruise, and stay in each of the ports. There was a small room on board where you could get fancy or plain hot drinks--loved to get cappuccino every morning, and still or sparkling mineral water any time of day for no extra charge. The other people on our cruise were especially fun to be around, we met so many interesting people. We enjoyed the nighttime concerts and lectures, and especially the music trivia game. It seemed a low-key cruise, with a few smaller towns, and even a national park in Saxon Switzerland, as well as the larger cities of Berlin and Prague. We had a standard cabin, which was great. We heard the window was large for a cruise, and the cabin was super-efficient. We had laundry done, and it was delivered boxed and in tissue paper. Everything went smoothly, and we did not encounter any problems in the scheduling, tours, etc. We were a little confused with how many meals were included, but it turned out all the meals during the cruise, and breakfast in the hotels was always included. We were happy to be able to use our electronics without a converter. The towels were better than any of the towels at our luxury hotels, and even the bed was more comfortable that the beds at either of hotels. Viking meets you at the airport, and sees you off at the other end, even getting boarding passes, so we didn't really even need to think about anything once we arrive. Next time, we want to pick a cruise where we can stay longer on the ship! Read Less

We chose this cruise, because of the high ratings of Viking!! They lived up to our expectations!! The staff, accommodations, food, and people we met were the nicest!! We will definitely go again! We bought a voucher...so we can't wait for another outstanding experience!! We traveled from Decin to Berlin. When we disembarked to bus to board the ship, it was an ah-ha moment!! We were handed a drink as we boarded and welcomed by the captain. The food was wonderful and we had 3 choices of dining. Either we could go to the buffet(each meal), or be served by our server, from ordering from the menu, or go to the upper deck area for a lighter fare. All areas were fresh and delicious!! We thoroughly enjoyed the bar service(as we bought the extra drink package). We also enjoyed the entertainment of the speakers brought in, and every night having a keyboard player to listen to. Our outside excursions were enjoyable and enlightening. Our Viking guide, Matt, was terrific. He was easy to talk to and listen to. The captain and Doret the crew director were also fun to be around, as we even had dinner with them. The people we met from all different countries were so warm and friendly, we hated to leave!! We will definitely go again, especially on a river cruise! Read Less
