We choose the cruise on the advice of other people. We thought the food was excellent. The service provided by all the crew members impressive. I spilled a tomato based sauce on a white blouse at dinner one evening and could not remove the stain. I gave the blouse to housekeeping and it was back in my room perfectly cleaned early the next morning. The cabin was cleaned to perfection every morning. Our tour director was absolutely wonderful. Every possible thing that would stress me out about traveling was taken care of. Friends had recommended the Cafe Imperial in Prague to us. I asked Daniella about it and she offered to make reservations for us. She made the reservation and we even were given a window seat. The shore excursions were very well done. Our favorites were the Lobkowicz Palace and the food tour. Having the Viking shuttle available in Prague was great. Thanks for a wonderful trip. Read Less

We chose this trip because of the itinerary. We have always wanted to see Poland so this seemed like the perfect way to do it. We flew into Berlin and were met by the very attentive Viking representatives. We were taken to the beautiful Berlin Hilton and met there by the very, very wonderful Daniella, the cruise director, who was with us until we left Prague. We spent 3 nights in Berlin, enjoying this vibrant city, then were taken by a lovely motor coach to Wittenberg where we boarded our boat. The five nights on the river were wonderful! The boat was beautiful, the staff very, very attentive, the food to die for and the programs delightful. Every effort was made to see that we had an outstanding trip. We then spent 3 nights in beautiful Prague. The shore excursions in all cities were outstanding and a great value. Daniella left us on the morning that we left for Krakow. Her place was filled by Adrian who was our director until we left for home. Adrian was attentive, knowledgable and respectful of our elderly travel companions who were having some difficulty managing the level of activities on some of the the shore excursions. We enjoyed beautiful Krakow and then traveled to wonderful Warsaw. Both of these cities were amazing!!! The only trouble that we had was in Warsaw at the Sofitel Warsaw Victoria. It was 104 degrees in Warsaw and the hotel's air conditioning had for the most part shut down. It was pretty miserable and there didn't seem to be much concern by the hotel management. All four hotels were definitely luxury hotels with better than average to excellent dining options. It was just this one problem with the AC in Warsaw. Four hotels, one riverboat, multiple motor coach trips, multiple transfers in 16 days and everything went seamlessly. Viking took care of every detail seeing that luggage and transfers and all shore excursions were flawless. I would highly recommend this trip. We had a wonderful time and look forward to another Viking experience. Read Less

My wife and I went on our first river cruise on the Elbe from Berlin to Prague. It was a wonderful experience and we greatly enjoyed getting to know the crew and other passengers. Highlights of the trip include fascinating trips to Martin Luther's Wittenberg, Meissen porcelain factory, the beautiful Bastei region, and the Lobkowicz Palace. The crew was very welcoming and friendly. Our captain, Josef, was very approachable and his bridge was always open for visitors. The food by chef Gavin was outstanding, especially his sumptuous desserts. The guides were all very interesting, well informed and willing to share their own personal perspectives on recent historical events relating to Nazi and Soviet times. Our hotel director, Dorit, made sure all our needs were met and made a personal connection with each guest. Devin, our program director, was especially impressive, with his expert command of the German history, language and culture, always mixed in with his quirky style and sense of humor. We look forward to our next Viking cruise, but that crew will have high expectations to meet. Read Less

We had a great time on this cruise. Meeting Claudia our cruise director in Berlin, was a treat and we knew that things were only going to get better. She was a lively, gracious host that took pains to see to everyone's needs, and always with a ready smile. The waiters, especially Lucas, were attentive and remembered our needs and likes after the first night. The maître' d was always at your service and was seen each night and morning going table to table to see that everyone had what they needed. He even pitched in and helped to clear plates and serve. We had never seen that before. The captain was around and gave a great tour of the controls that ran the ship. We met good friends, had a friendly crew, and a wonderful cruise. We have seen better scenery on other rivers but the quietness and tranquility of this cruise made it very restful when on the river. We never felt we had to jump up to the top deck to see something we might miss. We have cruised with Viking before and will look forward to doing so again. Read Less

We had a great time on this cruise, our 4th with Viking. The crew were fabulous and the extra care we got from the Program director and staff was outstanding. The only concern was that it would have been nice to be on the ship longer and leave out the land stay. We enjoy going place to place and often stay on land on our own. We really like the sailing. I will say that during the land stays the attention to us and our comfort was nice. A hotel in Berlin closer to the city center would have been easier to access the sites that we were interested in seeing. A suggestion of a longer cruise with a couple days on shore would have made us happier. But the port of calls and escorted sightseeing is always good on Viking and this time too it did not disappoint. The tour guides showed their pride in their country and their English was impeccable. The food was fabulous and plentiful and the waitstaff attentive. We can't wait for another trip in the future. Read Less

Loved sailing past bucolic scenes in the Czech Republic and parts of Germany that used to be part of East Germany. Staff members were friendly, very personal in their own stories, funny and very attentive. Food and wine were excellent! I especially liked the museum we went to in Dresden filled with treasures and the special rock formations in the "Alps." Potsdam was sobering knowing what history happened there. The guides, especially the ones in Germany, were very informative. We spent extra days in Prague before the trip started and afterwards in Berlin where we went to the Holocast Museum, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Topography of Terror. Despite the cold and sometimes rainy weather, the trip was very enjoyable, and there was plenty of water for the ship! Programming on the cruise was expertly handled and maps were always available for the town outings. It was very fun to take an evening walk through one town where we were only staying the night at the port. I might never have seen the towns we stopped at in any other trip and especially liked the personal stories about what it was like to live in the eastern block before unification. Read Less

It was a trip with friends. The service was great, the tours were super and the guides were outstanding. Food and the service were excellent. Viking is my new favorite cruise line. Transfer from the airport to the hotel was painless. Hotel accommodations in Berlin were great. We did our own walking tour on arrival day. Boarding the boat was simple, quick and we were on our way. Each of the stops had a well thought out provided tour. Each of the tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable of the location and the history. Many had lived through times from before the wall came down to now. Their insight was amazing. Prague was a key stop for us. It's an amazing city, but becoming more commercialized, losing some of it's old world flavor. Still a great place to visit. We stayed a couple extra days in Prague and made our own way to the airport. Air France was the primary carrier for our flights. Gate personnel at Charles DeGaul were rude. Not sure I'd fly through there again. Read Less

Friends had told us that Prague was a must see city, and we had always wanted to visit Berlin. The Elegant Elbe seemed a perfect way to combine a history lesson and our desire to leisurely travel. The Astrild was a very new ship and with a maximum capacity of 99 (we only had 79)- was just what we were looking for. Travelling through what had been East Germany and learning through the shore excursions and the enhancement discussions when locals came on board was very rewarding. We are not big "entertainment fans" but the local cultural activities were well done. Our favourite memories are of our Program Director Vikki who was with us on both extensions in Prague and Berlin, she provided great insight to both cities and on our daily excursions. Vikki took pictures of us on our outings - so we have a great USB key of not only the sites we visited but of some of the folks we were travelling with. I also have to give a shout out to Chef Bobby who provided an excellent bill of fare, and willingly made custom breakfast omelettes to set the stage for day. We are happily repeat Viking customers and can hardly wait for our next trip France's Finest. Read Less

Previous recommendations. But the crew made the journey and experience of a lifetime. This was our 3rd Viking Cruise. The people on board from the Captain down were one of the most engaging and interacting we have seen. Our tour director was with use from the pre trip through our post trip. She was helpful, funny, and so hard working. The food as always was excellent and the staff remembered our names and what we preferred to eat and drink. The shared personal stories when asked that made the trip special. We were all there together. Our room was well appointed and immaculate at all time. The excursions were well thought out. The exception was an extra that we paid for in Prague, the Palace with lunch and concert. The meal was mediocre and the palace itself dark. As for the artwork, not world class and needs a lot of restoration (I guess thus the high price) also the walk up to the palace was too strenuous for some. We almost lost a guest who was having heart problems. We were not warned ahead of time. Would not recommend this to anyone. Not up to Viking standards. The extensions and the cruise was worth every penny. I do believe it is the staff that makes the trip what it is. The one we took to Easten Europe while the cruise was nice the crew was not up to par. We were a little wary after that, but this trip was way way beyond and so we will do another trip. Read Less

We wanted to go to places on this cruise. We were also intrigued by the smaller ship. We could not have been more pleased. This is my third river cruise and my favorite favorite. We were able to get too know more of the people. People did not seem to stay in the same group the entire cruise but mingled with others people. The crew was very visible and could not have been nicer. The program director was great! I would recommend this cruise to everyone. The places were delightful. We had a mix of larger and smaller cities. The cruise ship is decorated beautifully. When there was a task to be done such as taking our luggage off, the entire crew pitched in, including the captain and everyone. The golf hole on the top deck was a good distraction. We were scheduled for the Viking Beyla but it had been used on the other end of the river because the Astrid could not sail because of the depth of the water,. The entertainment was excellent and appropriate for the places we visited,. Read Less

We recently sailed on The Astrild. Well we started on the Beyla for 3 nights. There was a bit of a problem the Elbe didn't have enough water to sail. Although they did manage one day for a few hours. We were docked and they bused us to the locations we were to see on board. It worked out very well, although it would have been great to sail. The crew was excellent and attentive. We then switched to the Beyla. We packed and they took our suitcases and when we arrived at the ship all was ready. Once again the crew was excellent!! They were professional, helpful and most of all pleasant. We sailed a bit each day from this point down. It all worked out just fine. We had some great meals on board both ships. My only complaint was they didn't serve local wines as we traveled. Though you can bring your own wine to dinner. All the shore excursions are top notch. The buses they have are comfy and the drivers are excellent. We have already signed up on the Viking Sun. Read Less

Viking is the best. The Astrid is a beautiful ship. The staff, especially our Program Director Radem, were terrific. The water in the Elba was too low to navigate as one point. Viiking let us know and offered alternatives as well as compensation. We went and were so glad we did. At one point we had to leave the Astrid and be moved to a sister ship at the point where the water was too low. All we had to do was pack. The staff took care of everything else. Even the captain was helping to move us. When we got the the other ship which was exactly like the Astrid everything was exactly in place. Very impressive. The tours were excellent - very informative and excellent guides. The cabins are very comfortable and the food is delicious. This was my fifth trip on Viking. This year I am taking my 6th and have already booked an ocean trip for 2018. Read Less

My wife and I took our first river cruise with Viking last July. The cruise was from Prague to Berlin and we added extensions in both cities which I highly recommend. Simply put, the staff and crew were amazing throughout the trip. The meals were excellent and varied. The excursions were interesting and informative with options available for different interests. The Astrild is a new ship and the cabins were as nice as any we've had with prior cruises. Our cabin was a lower level one without a balcony. This was our first cabin without a balcony and we didn't miss it. The downside with this itinerary is the Elbe River is prone to lower levels which negated our ability to cruise through some of the more scenic areas near the Chek/Germany border. I wouldn't hesitate to travel with Viking again and am already looking forward to our next experience with Viking. Read Less

Wanted to try a river cruise. Chose Viking because it had a 2 for 1, and special on airline tickets . Also, excursions were included. It is called the elegance of the Elbe river. Started in Berlin and ended in Prague. The ship requires at least 14 inches of water ; the Elbe is suppose to be one of the shallowest rivers in Germany, so Viking designed a ship specifically for this river. We did get an email that it couldn't go to a couple of destinations and would require a motor coach to reach the sites. We went down as far as it could, did a u tiun to go back to Dresden (not a bad place to end up in) loved the experience. It is the smallest, and there were about 96 people on the cruise. Met some fascinating people on the cruise. Excursions and guides were great. Staff ratio is 1 staff to 3 guests. Read Less

We began our journey in Berlin which was such an interesting city and new to us. We were taken by coach to the embarkation point of Magdeburg stopping for a time in Potsdam. Everything was perfect. The ship (Viking Astrild) is small (about 100 passengers) and new. Our cabin had a lovely balcony and the weather was good so we could use the balcony to watch the world on the Elbe river go by. The food and wine in the dining room were excellent. There was always a talk in the lounge ahead of dinner to learn about the next day's activities where lovely appetizers and cocktails were served. Each port was unique and new to us. We stopped in Wittenberg where Martin Luther lived and worked. We visited Dresden. There was music on board the ship on several occasions. Our disembarkation was in a town near Prague and we were driven by coach to a hotel in the center of Prague. We enjoyed every aspect of this cruise and will be planning other river cruises, probably with Viking, in the future. Read Less

It allows you to get to know your fellow cruisers. Made some new friends. There was a good mix of planned activities and free time. We could opt in or out of whatever suited us. Having local tour guides on the excursions made an amazing difference in the depth and breadth of information, history and personal perspective we received on each outing. Our tour director was very energetic and enthusiastic. There was always water available on our way to a tour and umbrellas if needed. Everything about the cruise was great. From our check in for the extra days in Prague till our check in Berlin everything exceeded our expectations. Our Cruise Direct Victoria was at both of those hotels. The ship was great sparkling clean with comfortable cabins. The food was excellent and with different places aboard to eat was even better. The staff was superb and our Captain was always congenial. We enjoyed the pace and scope of the tours as well as the lectures on board and we learned a lot. The Dresden murals some 90ft high were spectacular. On an evening walk we were able to visit the Russian monument which commemorated the link-up of the Russian and American Armies during WWII. We enjoyed every minute of our cruise. The guests aboard were all very nice and very interesting. We were cruising with our friends and most of the tables in the dining room were six seaters which worked out great because we got to meet a new couple every evening. All in all it was a fantastic trip!!!! We enjoyed it so much we have signed up for two other, "The Chateau Rivers and Wine" River Cruise and the Ocean Cruise "Into the Midnight Sun". And it was. Surprise. They took me off the boat kicking and screaming. I would not miss another chance to do a river cruise. Good food, good wine, good company , good entertainment, good fun, great touring weather, no packing suitcases, what else could an old girl want? The wine probably has a lot to do with the way I feel about this little vacation. When I win a lottery, I'm going to live on one of those boats. It just might be cheaper than a nursing home. As we traversed the Elbe, the small towns have preserved their heritage and the castles are rococo crazy decorated beyond belief. At the end, Potsdam and Berlin finish the story of this land steeped in so many centuries of history. Our staff was exceedingly knowledgeable. The food was wonderful and the cabins were very functional. I especially enjoyed the folk artists that came aboard to play and dance for us with their local instruments and costumes. Everything on Viking goes on time. It is such a pleasure to be able to count on the ship, the staff and the itinerary to exceed expectations at every port. All of the local tour guides were wonderful - really knowledgeable and interesting. English skills were very good. Food on the ship was terrific (as always), portions were good and wait staff very attentive. Our cabin steward also did a great job and was very flexible with our comings-and-goings. Absolutely a wonderful river cruise made so by the very attentive team- oriented staff, knowledgable cruise director,( Victoria), excellent on board activities, delicious fare and delightful ports. A lovely new small river boat, the Astrild is modern and spotless. This trip was a delight and among the best we have taken! The staff, guides and drivers ensured we thoroughly enjoyed our pre-cruise trip to Prague and post- cruise tours of Potsdam and the city center of Berlin. We had great hotel accommodations which were within walking distance of many historic sights. All of the excursions throughout the cruise were very informative, at a pleasant pace with listening devices and the tour guides were knowledgable and personable. This special journey on the Elbe was filled with pristine villages and lovely countryside. All the meals were superb with several selections. Even the gracious hotel manager assisted with serving soups, salads and light healthy entrees in the lounge for lunch. An alternative dining location, the lounge offered quick access to step outside and capture many photo ops. The names and preferences of all of the passengers were quickly learned by the crew. Together, they created a very congenial environment which facilitated many new friendships. As this was our first River Cruise with Viking, the bar has been set high for future cruises! Traveling with theater group Berlin-Prague. Viking Astrild is newer two deck, midsized ship that allows easy interaction between all guests. Crew was outstanding from day one and quickly picked up on individual preferences of the guests. Food was delicious with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables delivered each day to accompany meals. The cheese variety and abundance was amazing. Ask the chef for recipe on any favorite meals. The guides for tours were great and added many interesting insights for locations visited. Onboard entertainment, cozy and comfortable. A pianist as member of the crew and small local musical groups that came on board in the evening while docked. First trip on river cruise and not sure we will ever go back to ocean cruising. The pace, intimacy, comfortable lounge, dinning and recreational areas made the trip much more relaxing than large ships. This was first visit to Prague and we would go back in a minute. It is a beautiful city with a blend of historic and modern and a population which made us feel very comfortable and at home. We wandered the streets and visited exclusive designer clothing, jewelry, glass stores and small local shops with no problems with language or communication. We have visited many cities in Europe and always felt comfortable, but never quite like Prague. After just a week, we were sad to leave the new friends we had made among crew and guests. We chose this cruise because neither of us had been to Berline, Prague or down the Elbe. We didn't know anything about Viking except what we saw on PBS ads but we had been on a Danube cruise with another company, so we thought this would be the same. Boy, were we wrong. From the moment we were met at the Berlin airport until we were helped right to to security at the Prague airport, we were cared for in an extraordinary way. Every detail was perfect, but the service was never overbearing. We have traveled a great deal, and Viking stands out for service, for punctuality and for just plain excellence. The ship is lovely and very small. Because there are only about 90 passengers, there are only two busses for shore excursions, so getting on and off the ship is easy and quick. No standing in line. No huge group overwhelming a small town. Our cabin was compact and elegant, with every detail thought through. For example, the beds are high enough so that your larger suitcase can slide right underneath and the sliding doors on the bath and closet close onto felt strips rather than banging into wood. Everyone building a house should have Viking's architect. The food was good and plentiful. We especially enjoyed breakfast and the German dinner. Shore excursions were orchestrated beautifully and we especially loved Dresden and Berlin. There was plenty of free time to explore a city on your own and we took advantage of that time with our very minimal German. There was always someone who spoke English to help us if needed. VIking provides maps of each town as you leave the ship - just one more excellent Viking detail. Many people on the ship had been with Viking before. That impressed us. After many ocean cruises, we dove into a Viking Cruise down the Elbe River. Overall a fun time, very good food, active shipmates, and will definitely do again. Unfortunately we had a barge blocking our way down stream at Dresden. This took away some underway days. It was beginning of season and I never thought about chilly weather. However, it was part of the adventure. Regular cruisers on Viking River Cruises suggested other itineraries for more exciting scenario, which we plan to do. Ship holds less than 100 passengers and we had less than 80, so we had personal attention and enjoyed meeting new, interesting folks. No gym nor stationary bicycle. This was a problem because of the barge that blocked our way and we bussed to and from final sites last few days. Did a lot of walking so that offset no bike. Golf putting green on top deck.
