We chose Grand European as our first river boat cruise because we wanted to experience the Danube and Rhine rivers and their ports of call. The Gefjon ship's cabins, dining, and service was fabulous! Our room steward, Nichola, kept our cabin spotless! Chef Antonio's meals were AWESOME! Loved the variety of dishes which included local cuisine! David, Brian and Elmer, our dining servers, were MAGNIFICENT! They were very attentive to our every need, friendly and professional! Loved, loved the ports and shore excursions! All of our local tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly! Mika, our program director, was very informative and helpful. Loved using the quiet boxes on our excursions so we wouldn't miss what the guide was saying! Our concierge, Eddy, was fantastic! He was able to get us Anne Frank Huis tickets! Embarkation and disembarkation were very smooth! No problems whatsoever! One of the best features of the cruise was that it felt intimate with only 160 passengers versus 5,000 on an ocean cruise! Viking Cruise line ROCKS! We will definitely go on another Viking Cruise!!! Read Less

The staff was excellent. Always present but not overwhelming with their presence. The food was delicious. Enjoyed the ports. The support staff at the airport was amazingly helpful. Special recognition to our Program Director, Minka and to wait person Atilla! Have heartily recommended this cruise line to many of our friends! This was our first Riverboat cruise and had many preconceptions. Thought the activity level would not be enough to feel engaged all the time. That was not the case at all. The individuals who served as guides in each port were for the most part, engaging. Enjoyed many of the little asides they provided. Enjoyed the walks around the towns and ports. Enjoyed the regional foods inserted into the menu port to port. Felt the sites picked out for our tours were well thought out. While traveling with friends, a medical emergency occurred. The assistance in dealing with this incident couldn't have been better. Our program director facilitated medical services. It was smooth sailing from then on! Read Less

We had the time of our lives. Even though one of us was limited in walking abilities, due to an injury, the staff did their utmost to make sure we both had an enjoyable experience. There is even a "Gentle" walking tour group at every stop, for those who have limited abilities. We were shown special attention to make sure we both were taken care of. We both felt like royalty. When one of us got sick and stayed in the cabin through two dinner services, the staff of the restaurant made sure that he received a full hot meal, delivered by the restaurant Manager. We were totally impressed with the entire staff and crew. The shipboard entertainment was first-class, with shows by such professionals that I would compare them to highly paid stage performers. The food on the ship was outstanding. I cannot praise the chef and his team enough, especially after seeing the tight quarters that they have to prepare the meals. Truly a "Trip of a Lifetime"! I can't say enough about our wonderful journey on this beautiful Viking longboat. The staff were absolutely amazing...every one of them warm, caring and always smiling. The organization of embarking, daily tours, special events, was impeccable. Often after an afternoon excursion, as we entered the ship there'd be waiters in the lobby to welcome us back with a cocktail and appetizer. Food was delicious...dinner was 5 star restaurant quality. Loved the included wine and beer. Entertainers from local towns were very good. Our onboard pianist was delightful. The included tours were great, with informative and fun guides. Loved the fact that there were only 180+ passengers so able to meet and chat with at least half of them. Many were "world travellers" and I didn't hear one complaint from anyone. Everyone I talked with was very impressed, found the journey & the ship very relaxing, and they ould definitely do another river cruise....us too! Kudos to Viking!! Read Less

This was our first ever trip to Europe and we were thrilled with the cruise, the staff, the excursions and the weather! Amsterdam was a great starting point and the tour added so much information that we would never have learned on our own. The ship was wonderfully clean and well maintained. The cabin was a bit snug but was a welcoming place to come back to each day. The balcony was a great addition providing a great place for close up viewing of many locks and life along the way. The food was exceptional and always good. The service was excellent all around. The churches, castles, towns and countryside were amazing and are fondly remembered still today. The tours added so much to the experience as we had someone familiar with the area to point out things we would not have found on our own. We enjoyed this cruise so much we plan to do another in the future. Read Less

We checked out several cruise options and decided on this one, we like the ports and shore excursions offered and the Viking line has a good reputation. I like to do lots of research before choosing our next holiday. Our room had a "French" balcony, which is a patio type door with a bar across the middle, so you get lots of daylight, and you can open it to take pictures or just enjoy the fresh air. I would recommend this over the balcony as we were often docked up against another ship and the balconies were not usable. Lovely fresh linens and comfy queen size bed, not too much more room but it was fine. The bathroom had a heated floor, very nice addition and a nice sized shower. The dinning room was large and airy with windows everywhere. The staff were awesome and the food great too. Lots of choice at all meals and wine, beer and sodas were included. If you are looking to be entertained in the evenings with big shows this is not for you but several nights we had local groups into play music or do a demonstration of local art. The included tours were well run and very interesting, extra tours were also offered for those interested. We meet so many interesting people from all walks of life, there was lots of time to just sit and enjoy the scenery, read a book or chat with new friends. We would certainly do another river cruise, just have to decide where to next. One note: we did have a big problem with our air line tickets, Viking booked them through Air France and we could not get preassigned seating or print boarding passes due to a computer problem. Very annoying and frustrating. We tried for five days and finally our travel agent was able to obtain our boarding passes. This did not spoil the actual cruise but it was not a good way to start a holiday. Good thing the ship was wonderful. Hope this helps someone to decide. Read Less

Made friends with several of them. Food and beverages were first rate with something different most any day. Other passengers seemed to also enjoy their experience. We made several friends on the voyage. Sleeping Cabin was a little tight, however comfortable. Housekeeping seemed to go out of their to maintain everything. During the trip the wife and I Celebrate our 43rd Anniversary. Both the Housekeeping and Dining Crew made it Special Occasion. The main topic of the Vacation was the sightseeing of the Danude River and it's associate water ways. This to include the many stops at cities and landmarks. Excursions at all included plus other at additional charge. The ones we took were really something special in both the viewing and the tour guide's shared knowledge and stories associated with the location site. Just got back from our 15-day Grand European cruise, and all I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!! Everything was top notch. We cruised on the newer long boat, Gefjon. The ship, crew, food, and excursions were excellent. I will give as much detail as I can. We booked about 45 days in advance and let Viking make all of our travel arrangements since we got our airfare for free. Flights went smoothly, and when we arrived in Budapest, we were greeted by 2 lovely ladies from Viking. We were quickly escorted to our private van, which took us to our ship (about 20 minute ride). We were lucky enough to arrive at 10 a.m. to our ship, and we were quickly greeted by a few staff members and shown directly to our room. ROOM: We had the veranda suite (#315), which was on the 2nd level. The room was an average size for a ship with ample storage space for clothing, large area under bed to put suitcases, a little fridge, hair dryer, TV, safe, and a few 110 American outlets. The bathroom was small, but large enough to accommodate my 6'4", 280 lb husband. The bathroom was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and make-up remover pads/Q-tips, and shower cap. Nice touch with heated floors! The veranda was small with 2 chairs and a table, but nice enough to sit out on the cool mornings with our cups of coffee watching the scenery. FOOD: Food was amazing, and of course ample! You could eat in the Aquavit Terrace for a light breakfast, lunch, or dinner - or you could eat in the main restaurant downstairs for a full course meal. We usually ate breakfast in the main restaurant, and had a choice of any breakfast dish you can imagine. If it was not out on the serving table, you could ask for it to be made for you. We rarely ate lunch on the ship, as we tried to eat on our own during our excursions to get a taste (and drink) of the local cuisine. Dinner consisted of an appetizer, main course, and dessert. There were plenty of options, and you could eat 2 main courses, 2 desserts, and 2 appetizers... or even more if you wanted. My husband is a big guy, and without even being asked, they always brought him double and asked if he would like to try something else. Beer and house wine (which changes depending on your location) is included with lunch and dinner. We did not purchase the Silver package, as we did not think it was worth it for us. You really have to drink a LOT or drink very expensive liquor/wine for it to be worth it. EXCURSIONS: We went on as many included excursions as we could, which were very informative and led by very knowledgeable guides. The extra excursions that we paid for were the Mozart concert, Salzburg, Rothenburg, the pub crawl in Cologne, and the cheese making tour. Salzburg was a bit expensive at 200 per person with a 2-hour bus ride, but as we are fans of Sound of Music, it was nice to see some of the areas where the film was made. We were a bit disappointed with Rothenburg, as we specifically went there for the Steiff teddy bears, but as it was Sunday, all the stores were closed! Had someone told us they would be closed, we would have saved our money and did the included excursion. The pub crawl was probably our favorite. We went to 4 different pubs and drank with the locals, which also included a very nice German dinner with pork, sauerkraut, potatoes, and a cheese/meat dish with dessert... and all the Kolsch beer you could drink. The cheese tour was also a bit expensive for what it was... considering you end up in the cheese store purchasing as much as you think you can buy without going over your luggage weight... and yes, the cheese was excellent! STAFF: I cannot say enough about the staff! Every one of them were amazing. By day 2, we were being called by our first names (still have no idea how they remember all the names), the wait staff knew what we liked to eat and drink... and how much. We all became friends for 15 days. I need to shout out to Meike, our cruise director, Eddie the concierge, and the bartenders and wait staff who treated us like kind and queen.. Stephan (waiter), Stephan (bartender), David, Marvin, Brando, and Lucia - you all rock! MISC: We had no problem with water levels. There were over 65 locks that we had to go through, which most of them are at night while sleeping. You never feel like you are moving like on an ocean cruise, so sea-sickness is not an issue. Entertainment is what you make of it. We had Tony the piano player (sorry for torturing you, Tony), who plays every night, and after a few drinks, we were all singing along the piano. Don't expect glitzy shows, as the ship is small and just cannot accommodate that kind of thing. There were a few nights when they had local dancers/singers come in, which was quite nice... but we usually sat in the Aquavit and played board games or just talked with our new forever friends. Honestly, you will be so tired from the day's activities, you will just want to relax by the time you are finished dinner. The average age of the passengers seemed to be 55+. Although we were one of the youngest couples, we certainly had to "keep up" with our fellow passengers who were very young at heart. This cruise is really not for the person who cannot walk or handle many cobblestone pathways, and even some climbing up steep hills (on some excursions) to castles and palaces. Again, you can make the trip your own. Many times we diverted from the included tours and went off on our own.. and if possible, we would take public transportation back to the ship or a taxi (the staff will give you excellent directions on returning). In summary, I can honestly say, this was the most memorable experience we have ever had. We made some life-long friends and are even talking about a reunion for another trip. I really do not have one bad thing to say. Can't wait for our next trip!! Read Less

What can i say. All our needs were handled in a superb manner and i can honestly say, no need was unmet. The cruise director was great!!! and was very thorough in telling the guests in detail the events of the day. He is a great asset to Viking and to the Gefjon in particular. Shore excursions were great.....entertainment wonderful, and dining/food great at all meals. Was surprised with a birthday celebration that was requested by my roommate and it was so nice and fun. Even my bed was decorated with happy birthday. My roommate wanted to know how our room steward knew which bed i slept and when asked he rolled his eyes and with a big smile said, "I know everything"!!! we had a good laugh. Recently retired and wanted to experience a river cruise. Was attracted to the high end cruise line, the ability to experience a cross section of Europe, and the reputation of Viking. This cruise was also highly recommended by a colleague. The only minor downside is that we tried to do too much, booked too many excursions and had little free time. Dining aboard ship was excellent and all ship staff were outstanding in their friendliness and professionalism. The weather during the cruise was mixed, had some cold and wet days but this is no reflection on Viking. Book later in the spring or in summer for better temperatures. On the positive side was that the cities, towns, and attractions visited were not overly crowded as they can be in the summer holiday season. A couple of the shore excursions were rather fast paced and felt rushed, but they were certainly the exception. Overall an excellent cruise and worth doing again. Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and we celebrated our 27th Wedding Anniversary. The shore excursions were enjoyable as well as educational. Thomas Leitner was knowledgeable and fun both prior and during the shore excursions. We enjoyed Budapest and wished we could have spent several more days exploring this beautiful city .The husband and wife duo was very relaxing to listen to in the Lounge. Several special groups were brought on board depending on the port . The ship was spotless and our bed was comfortable. We would make our bed up in the morning (military training) and somehow the cabin steward always knew we had left the room and he would come in and make the bed up to Viking standards! A thank your for arranging the distilled water for my Cpap machine. The dining service was excellent and the variety of menu choices was delightful. The wait staff was helpful and suggested choices. I think my husband's favorite dessert was the Rum Raisin ice cream! We enjoyed sitting on our veranda drinking coffee and watching the scenery. Disembarkation was outstanding. A Viking representative took us all the way through customs and got me settled in the handicap area to await wheelchair transport to the gate. I will recommend this cruise and Viking to all my friends and we are beginning to plan our next cruise with Viking. Read Less

All in all the Viking Cruise aboard the Gefjon was a good cruise. There was one hiccup which I talk about later. The ship was conveniently located for boarding in Amsterdam at the ship terminal. We had stayed at the Movenpick next door. We were enthusiastically greeted by the Program Director, Sam Corbin. Sam, a very exuberant young man, was a very capable and enjoyable Program Director for the trip. His excursions were well run and he was always pleasant no matter what happened. The on-board programs were entertaining. If you like medieval history and architecture with castles and cobblestones, you would like the cruise. We do. Be prepared though for some difficult walks. When Viking says the walk is “strenuous” – believe it. Don’t play macho with a “I-can-handle-anything” attitude! The ship itself was in very good condition. Everything was kept in a shiny and spotless manner. The crew across the board was attentive, good natured and eager to please the 183 passengers. The housekeeping staff kept the cabins clean. Just remember though, instead of asking for “wash clothes” ask for “face towels”. There were two dining areas – the main dining room (open seating) and the Aquavit Terrace. Both were very capably served by staff. The Terrace was a wonderful place to have breakfast and watch the world go by. The biggest drawback to the Terrace was the dinner entrees were on a one week rotation and only the entrée changed each night – other courses always remained the same. What you had on the first Monday was what you would get the next Monday and there was only one entrée offered. Over the years we have seen all cruise lines reduce the food quantities served and an emphasis on presentation – how does it look on the plate with drizzles and colors, etc. The food was average and, frankly, tended toward the bland side. Soups had little thickness – were very watery. I think Viking has overdone the portion control. Surf and turf with one-half of a small lobster tail and small four oz. piece of meat is carrying it a little far. The “fall back” steak if you didn’t like other alternatives was a, sometimes, inedible strip steak. We know people who sent them back. While we generally enjoyed the cruise, there was one very troubling aspect. We paid for a full balcony stateroom on the second deck with the intent of enjoying the scenery while sitting on the balcony (or at least with the door open) as we glided across Europe. The Viking company policy is that staterooms and balconies are non-smoking. A designated area is provided for smokers. Unfortunately, we non-smokers, ended up with at least one smoker next door and he sat on his balcony smoking. We were forced indoors with the balcony door closed. I spoke to customer service about this about the third day of the cruise. Their reply was they would check with housekeeping. We did not receive any feedback on the issue and the smoking continued through the end of the cruise. A Viking representative contacted me after the cruise after I had made a comment on one of their surveys with a “so sorry” attitude. If you are a non-smoker and are expecting a non-smoking environment, you should be prepared for that to not be the situation and act accordingly. My mistake was probably not being aggressive enough in the follow-up. So, would we do a river cruise again? Maybe. Would we do Viking again? That’s going to require some real consideration. It was good, but if they don’t live up to their own policies well………….. Read Less

We moved into a community of active cruisers. Having never river cruised, they explained what we were missing, and the Viking Gefjon cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam proved them right! From the welcoming at the airport, outstanding hotel for our pre-cruise stay, to the final sad moment of heading home, their attention to detail, and our happiness, never diminished. Our 3rd floor balcony cabin was cozy yet comfortable and any extra request was completed by Monika with a warm smile. After a day, staff greeted us by name and so began the feeling of extended family that spread to all on board. Having only 190 passengers made dining and excursion adventures delightful! The menu was exceptional, and we particularly enjoyed the local cuisine and wine pairing. Stephan, Stephan, and Lucia were always ready with tempting options from the bar! The staff, from captain, Sam delightful cruise director, to head chef (who took us to the local outdoor market) and all others, were the best coordinated cruise team we have experienced in our 34 years of cruising! We were quite impressed with the quality of the included excursions, giving you options for additional tours, or time to cruise the beautiful towns and meet the locals (and taste the great beers)! Truthfully, it will be quite hard to return to big ships! We will certainly be enjoying more Viking cruises. Thank you Viking Gefjon for making our first river cruise spectacular ❣️ Read Less

We enjoyed the tour of kitchen and the pilot house. We also did a three day extension prior to our cruise and it was so worth it. We went to Prague and fell in love with the city. We chose to cruise on Viking because of our dear friends' recommendation. They had a wonderful experience, and since we share common interests and values, we thought we would as well. We chose wisely. This voyage on the Viking Gefjon was the trip of a lifetime. From the moment the Viking staff met us at Budapest airport, everything was delivered with excellence and friendliness. Our stateroom was beautiful and spacious enough to afford plenty of storage and comfort. The steward who cleaned our room several times a day was so efficient and helpful, it was hard to say, "Goodbye," to him on our last day. The staff on the Viking Gefjon led by our program director, Sam, is unmatched I am sure. There was a chemistry among the staff that spilled on over to the guests; we all had a golden time together. The food was delicious and varied. There was always a choice of eating either in the terrace restaurant or the dining room - and sometimes it was hard to choose, both were such lovely settings with great food. The shore excursions were handled in such an organized manner. It was impressive. Each of the guides knew so much history and were so proficient in English. They were passionate about their villages and towns and countries. We learned so much history from all of them. The on board entertainment was lovely; there was always something to do. Watching the beautiful European countryside go by from the sun deck was a highlight for me, but it was also fun and relaxing sitting on our veranda as well. As soon as we arrived back home, we started dreaming of our next Viking cruise. I am excited to travel again, but this experience will be hard to beat. Thank you Viking Gefjon staff! Read Less

Our first Viking River cruise. We chose a river cruise to try the smaller Viking experience and it was a great decision. We sailed from Budapest and did a pre-sail visit which was exciting. The town was beautiful and we saw many different sites in both Buda and Pest. We thought the prettiest site in Budapest was the nite cruise up and down the river. The ship was absolutely immaculate and looked as if it had just been launched. The cabins although smaller then the Ocean cruise were very comfortable and absolutely spotless. The staff was amazing and made us feel like we were family that just stopped by for a visit. There were 10 people in our group so one can imagine the discussions and ordering challenges at meal time. But to the staff's credit, they never got a meal wrong. Most impressive was by the second morning the entire dining staff new all of our names no matter where we sat at the table. The food was excellent and there was always something that would fit your tastes and the size of your appetite. Stefan and Lucia always did an outstanding job keeping our glasses full with beer, wine or other creations. Every day was an adventure into a new city (port) with its own culture that went back in time. The surrounding countryside offered spectacular views as we sailed up the Danube through the locks toward Amsterdam. The highlite of the daily activity was Sam, the program director. He was extremely funny and made us all laugh. He clearly enjoyed his job which means the trip is more enjoyable for the guests. Sam is by far the best program director we have seen to date on any cruise line. He is a fantastic representative for the Viking organization. We will definitely go again with Viking. After having been on three other Viking cruises, I expect Viking to provide the best in service, good food (and wine), safety, comfort and a crew that comes on like we have been friends for some time. "Can I help you?" I hear over and over again. Many times they ask for input and ideas, so that they can improve and/or do what's best for their travelers. I especially enjoyed excursions we experienced that gave us a taste of the local culture. We even had local entertainment onboard our vessel which was really special, and offered us a chance to hear great music and enjoy their dances and stories. Because there are a small number of guests, as compared to large ship ocean cruises, you meet and make friendships with people from all walks of life. They also may be from many countries around the world. When we would return from an excursion, we would be met by the crew with chocolate, or water and a cold towel if the day was hot. Nice touch yes? I like surprises like that! Read Less

Traveling on a Viking Cruise was my grandmother's idea and thankfully she invited my mother, my aunt and I to travel with her. It was a wonderful experience to travel with 3 generations to the incredible ports we visited; however, it was the Viking crew that made our experience so memorable. My grandmother is 91 years old and there were some excursions that were more challenging than others, but our cruise director, Sam, always went above and beyond for us to keep her included in activities or to be frank and let us know that she should relax on the ship instead. The whole crew made all of us feel like royalty, they knew what we liked to eat and drink and just made us feel so special. The ship is just the right size so that you get to know many of the other passengers and by the time the cruise is over, it feels like many are family. The included tours were by and large 4.7 out of 5.0; a couple fell short of expectation, but perhaps that is because the others were so excellent. Optional tours were educational, plentiful and entertaining. Port-to-land tour coordination was smooth. The ship's dining between the restaurant and the alternative lighter fare was ideal... all items available were prepared well, were reflective of the areas in which the longship cruised, and were well presented. Evening entertainment was fine. The glimses into area history and into the ship operations (and lock operation) were insightful. Reception staff and cabin staff were first-rate. It was interesting that Viking placed crew members with some tour groups... this permitting not only their being better able to interact with passengers by gaining more knowledge of area history and culture, but by permitting a social discourse between passengers and staff on a more personal level than server and served. Well done. Read Less

We are not into cruising but the concept of a river cruise where everyday you were in a different town with planned excursions appealed to me. I also did not have high expectations of the cruise itself thinking it would be like riding a Greyhound Bus because of all of Viking's advertising. The cruise blew me away. It was way beyond my expectations. Five stars are not enough to describe it. From the ship, to the crew, to meals, to the daily excursions..........all were well beyond first class. The ship was high tech and wonderfully appointed. The crew was genuine and sincere in it's treatment of all "explorers". The meals were five star, gourmet. The included and optional excursions had wonderful guides that provided a local perspective to the areas toured. I can not think of anyway to make the Viking Grand European Cruise any better. I would recommend Viking and the Grand European Cruise to all. It is worth every dollar it cost. Read Less

It was both a birthday and wedding anniversary celebration. We wanted it to be special but did not want to share it with thousands of people. The service, tours, food, and fellow passengers insured we had a great and memorable time. We were very impressed by the professionalism and friendliness of the staff, from the captain down to the waiters. The Entertainment Director did an outstanding job of making sure the excursions and tours were on-time and interesting. We also appreciated the "open seating" policy that allowed us to meet different fellow travelers throughout the cruise. We found the food and drink delightful, and enjoyed the extra effort to relate it to the areas we were cruising though. If we had to do it over we would only change one aspect of the trip. We regret not adding a day or two at both the embarkation point (Amsterdam) and the debarkation point (Budapest). Read Less

Picked this particular cruise because Viking was well rated, the cruise visited several countries and I thought traveling the rivers/canals would be more interesting than touring by bus. Our flight was cancelled, but Viking was great at getting someone to meet us the nest day and take us to the ship. Ship was beautiful with a peaceful vibe. The cabin was easy to live in and housekeeping was excellent. Food was great with a lot of choices. As a picky eater I was fearful but should not have been. The only risk was eating too much. The port excursions were well organized and the tour guides were excellent. I really enjoyed the mix of type of excursions--small towns, larger cities, castles and churches. There was also enough free time to do some exploring on our own. There was live music in the lounge every night and the on-board talks and demos were very interesting, especially the one by the captain about his ship. Service was excellent and everyone was fluent in English. The staff truly tried to get to know us and adapted their style formal/informal to make us the most comfortable. The beauty of the rivers and canals was truly unforgettable. I'd take the trip again, but only after trying some other Viking river cruises. Read Less
