This was our second cruise, first with Viking. We did the Heart of Germany cruise for the holidays. Pros: The ship was amazing. Brand new this season. Clean and modern. The service on the boat was out of this world. The crew was insanely committed to ensuring that all the passages had an amazing time. I don't think that their was a single time we walked by them without one of them asking if we need anything or saying hi. The captain was true leader among them. He was always working. Weather it was carrying luggage to the rooms, putting out the gangway, or just ensuring all the guest were having a great time. We saw and talked to him very day, amazingly nice guy. The service staff was hard working and some of the best I have ever come across. Everyone from the cabin stewards to the servers in the restaurants. Can't say enough good things about the staff. The itinerary was great, all the included tours were informational and well run, and the tour guides were knowledgeable and kind. Those you do have to take some buses, some trip were up to 1.5 hours ride from the boat, Viking has their own fleet of luxury motor coaches with bathrooms and comfortable seats. We literally just had to choose which tour we wanted to go on (Short, regular, or extended) and they did all the work. There is plenty of free time in each destination for exploring on your own. There were little to no kids on the boat. Few teenagers, but they were all VERY well behaved. We got to meet great people from all around the world. The ship felt like a small community that we didn't want to leave by the end of our adventure! The food can be summed up with one word, SPECTACULAR. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were tasty and filling. VERY filling, I think I gained 15lbs. on this trip. Cons: There were a few cons, small details. The top deck was never able to be open due to the fact that on the Main river in Germany there were over 140 bridges that we passed under during our cruise. Some as low as a couple inches from the top of the boat. There is not fitness facility on the boat and the only track was on the top deck which was closed. The internet on the ship is slow, but it was fine for us. We were trying to disconnect from the world anyways. Summary: Overall I would highly recommend this cruise line and the Heart of Germany itinerary. Germany is a gorgeous country that everyone should experience once in their life. We have already booked out next cruise, 15 days in the Baltic! We look forward to travel with them again. Read Less

This is our 5th river cruise with Viking. Captain Marcel Stephan is clearly a great leader and inspired his staff to deliver friendly and attentive service. We could sense the camaraderie amongst the staff and everybody seemed happy to be there and taking care of the passengers. Captain Stephan was constantly in attendance at all events, at each port, Viking presentations, even helping his crew unload luggage. The longship was new and well-designed. Each of the ports was beautiful and interesting. The local tour guides were knowledgeable and articulate, with a good sense of humour. The weather was exceptional, warm and most times sunny. The service and the food were consistently superior. The staff were friendly and cheerful, which added to our overall enjoyment. The restaurant staff welcomed us like we were VIP's. Even the Chef came out and chatted to us. Each menu item was well-prepared and served to us at just the right pace. It was a gastronomical delight. We would HIGHLY recommend this cruise. Read Less

The hardest part of our entire trip was the US to Europe flight and extremely long layover. But once the Viking staff member met us upon arrival, everything from that point on went as smoothly as we ever could have imagined. The ship's Captain, Director and staff were outstanding. They promptly and cheerfully responded to our every question or request for assistance. The food was superb, and every meal was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Our stateroom was quite roomy and well appointed and the views from our balcony were breathtaking. The onboard features including the ship's tour, the cookie making demonstration, the glass blowing exhibit, and the classical music concert were delightful. Though the evening entertainment was limited to a piano bar, the pianist was talented and quite entertaining. The Excursions and local guides were excellent. We had lots of choices and ample free time in virtually every port. And upon arrival back at the ship, we were greeted with either a cocktail, an amuse bouche, or a sweet treat. The welcome reception, Captain's Reception, and farewell reception were perfect opportunities to meet new friends or reconnect with friends from previous Viking cruises. We plan to keep in touch with a number of the new friends we made on this cruise. It is no exaggeration to say that every detail of the cruise from beginning to end was perfectly planned and flawlessly executed. We were so impressed, we have already scheduled our next cruise. We had been receiving brochures for years, and I finally convinced my husband to do the trip. We loved everything about it. The smaller ship, the wonderful food, the included tours and guides, entertainment aboard ship, the interesting cities/towns we visited, and the amazing crew. The ship was beautiful - sleek lines and understated decor, lots of common areas, inside and out, Two venues for eating - buffet and dining room/servers, and the menu was interesting, varied, and delicious, and the complementary beer/wine at lunch and dinner was lovely. The crew was professional, very friendly, and always helpful. I especially enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere; every minute of every day was not filled with activities. Lectures, demonstrations, and the evening entertainment was sufficient for me. The included walking/bus tours were so interesting, and the guides were so knowledgeable and informative, and we enjoyed all our ports of call. We met many interesting and friendly people, from the US, Canada, and Australia. I especially enjoyed the Canadians perceptive comments on our present political situation in the US. My husband has MS, and we were so fortunate that the ship had 2 extra wheel chairs on board, and he was able to be included in 90% of the tours, 1 of which was labeled "leisure". I would recommend future passengers to look into bringing a wheel chair on board so they can participate in the walking tours. I would love to do another cruise, and Viking would be my 1st choice. They have thought of everything! Read Less

Just finished the Grand European cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest for our 25th anniversary. Excellent, excellent, excellent! Viking does it up perfectly. They are so organized and all the shore excursions are planned out to include every detail and timed with precision. The excursions include local tour guides so you really get a feel for each locale that you are in. You can do as much or as little as you want to. Staff is super personable. Definitely do the optional excursions for beer tasting in Cologne, Germany, bus trip to Salzburg, Austria, and wine tasting in Krems, Austria. Another great part of the Viking experience is that they let you bring your own wine on board. Buy local wine from each port you are in and then drink it that night in the lounge. The trip itself is over 1,200 miles on various waterways and includes going thru 68 locks while on the Rhine River, Main River, Main-Danube canal (with aqueducts), and then onto the Danube River. They make sure that the very scenic parts of the rivers are cruised during the day for great photo opportunities with the many castles along the rivers. We chose to do the optional extension at Budapest at the end and it was well worth it. Budapest is very walkable and has a relaxed vibe. We also lucked out with timing since it was their Spring Festival while we were there. Incredible local food and crafts. Our suitcases were packed! Don't miss the tokaji tasting at the Faust Winery in the castle district! Free beer and wine during lunch and dinner also help out! Many great selections, including some local ones. Food was very tasty with a local flair. They even opened up the ship's kitchen one night for all the guests to see. If you cruise on the Gefjon, make sure to get to know the bartender Stefan...he ROCKS! Read Less

Our cruise on Viking River Cruise was all that we expected and more. We chose the least expensive cabin and were pleasantly surprised. It was small but very cozy and comfortable. We had all the amenities that we would have received in a far more expensive room. Our dining arrangements, our entertainment and activities were all first class. The service we received was always delivered with a care and a friendly smile. The tour guides in every port were excellent. When our dock was not within walking distance of the center of town, there was always a shuttle available. We did not book any of the optional excursions and were quite pleased that we didn't. The included tours gave us an overview of each town or city we stopped in and our dock location or shuttle gave us the ability to visit the places we desired easily. As an example when in Vienna we wanted to ride the famous ferris wheel. We were able to walk to the park, ride the ferris wheel and stroll back on a beautiful spring day taking in the local neighborhood. Our concierge, Eddie, always had suggestions and answers as to where we could go and how we could get there. I can't finish this review without commenting on all the staff on our ship. From the tour director, Dawn, who was knowledgeable, friendly and very talented to Monika, the girl who cleaned our room daily (and I have to add it sparkled and so did she), the staff was always pleasant, courteous and helpful. More than anything we were always greeted with a friendly smile wherever we went on the ship. Read Less

We had previously done the Romantic Danube and the Rhine separately, but my brother and wife wanted to do a cruise so we recommended this one. The part through southern Germany was new to us but we learned new things even on the other portions that we had already sailed. We really enjoy the daily shore excursions as the educational opportunities are important to us as we are both retired educators. There were also a number of optional excursions. On this cruise we did a lot of sailing during the daytime and sitting on the top deck taking in the breathtaking scenery was spectacular. It was also interesting to see the ship going through the numerous locks. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. We arrived at the ship fairly early in the morning and they had a light lunch for us. A bus was available to take us into town so we could explore even before the actual cruise began. There were a few cancellations so we were upgraded to a balcony room that was beautiful. I am sure it was because this was our fifth cruise with Viking. The dining choices were fabulous. There was always a regional dish, fish dish, and a vegetarian one. The desserts were out of this world and you could have more than one. The wait staff was exceptional in their service. My brother had a bad cold and the server brought him so broth that wasn't on the menu. The entire staff went out of their way to make the trip enjoyable. We have our sixth Viking cruise already booked for 2017. Read Less

The total brochure price was a great value for all that it included. We were celebrating two significant birthdays and a wedding anniversary and when we told our cousins about our plans, they decided to join us. Viking staff conveniently linked the reservations together. The four of us had a great time. Transportation arrangements worked without a hitch. Viking reps met us upon arrival. Our luggage was brought to our beautiful room. Meals were great. Staff was wonderful. Included tours and guides were excellent, especially with the provided listening devices and always available water. Morning tours in each new arrival city gave us enough information to plan our self directed afternoon activities after a great onboard lunch. Meals always included dishes and wines representative of the city or country we were visiting. All were equally delicious and beautifully presented. The four of us often sampled what one another had ordered. Each day was an adventure with just the right amount of planning and direction, culminating with a visit to a nice restaurant. The four of us have already booked another cruise. Read Less

We never have been to that part of the world and wanted experience a much smaller ship so a Viking river cruise with excursions included sounded good to us. (I loved the Viking advertisements that I saw at the movie theaters.) We travelled with our close friends, another married couple, which enhanced our comfort with the tours and the new experiences we were having. We enjoyed the Viking Gefjon ship far more than the 2000+ large ship cruise we took two years prior to Istanbul and the Greek Isles. My husband doesn't care for large crowds and prefers a much smaller ship. The Viking Gefjon cabin, the dining, the service, the tours, the cultural information and the views were outstanding. From day one on the ship we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our trip. Viking service made our trip effortless. We liked Viking so much that we will be leaving on another Viking river cruise in March 2017 to the Elbe (cruise 5 days) and 11 days on land will include Berlin, Prague, Krakow & Warsaw. At the ripe age of 71 and 75, we are feeling spoiled and pampered by the luxury Viking provides even though on all our prior travels through the years, we were more the tent and backpack type of travelers! The staff were all very professional and anticipated your every need--from the wonderful cabin attendant to the captain. The included shore excursions were led by local guides who did an excellent job of giving you an overview of the city, local history and culture. Time was sufficient for exploring each port on your own as well. The entertainment on board was educational as well as fun. Overall our trip could not have been better--we met some wonderful new friends and considered the staff as new friends as well. All our future cruising will be with Viking. Went on the new Viking Gefjon on the Danube Waltz. Loved the locations where we stopped, loved the bus tours around the cities, loved just sitting on the deck when the younger travelers went on other explorations, food was excellent, love the free wine or beer at lunch and dinner, personnel from tour guide to cabin attendant were above expectation. It was my fourth Viking Cruise and already looking for another seasonal special. Enjoyed having an elevator to help go up and down steps. Very comfortable in all areas from the reception area to the lounge. Would like to have the lounge camera show the entertainment instead of just the piano and when the tour guide showed slides would like to have seen them on our TV instead of just hearing her talk. Other cruises had a wider view of the lounge area and we could see the entertainment from the comfort of our room especially late in the evening when old people like us like to relax. Loved the optional excursions from the ship especially when lots of us have traveled with Viking before and have seen many of the locations we stop at. But always something new to see. The captain was very visible and was at many of the occasions and always welcomed people to see his control tower and had answers to all of our questions. It is always amazing how we go through so many locks up and down the river and many people are fassinated by this process Read Less

We took all the shore excursions we could and every single one was fantastic. The highlight of the cruise was arriving in Budapest at night. What a beautiful city. What truly separated this cruise from all other trips we have taken was the entire staff and the service they provided. What amazed me was how well they served 180 people sitting down to dinner at the same time. They always did the little things that makes great service world class service. They made us feel like we were the only guest on board. The cabin was small but comfortable and adequate. The food was fantastic along with the service in the dinning area's. The sites along the river and excursions on shore were great but at times a bit crowded. I would have like the groups on the shore excursions to be a little smaller. The various sites we toured were very good and the guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating with needs of the group. Usually there was ample time to look around after the tour so we could get a better feel for the locality and people. The various palaces and castles were spectacular. Suggestions on where and what to eat and buy from the guides and the staff on board the ship were very helpful. We are already thinking about out next river cruise and where we want to go. Read Less

The excursions were informative and we had silent boxes with ear buds so we could always hear our guides. The guides spoke fluent English and were well informed on their topics. The guides also were helpful about other places to see and places to eat that were not part of the tour. The passengers on the ship got to know each other as we took tours in small groups. Nothing but positive reviews! Took the Grand European itinerary. The ship, the crew, the food, the ports, the included tours...all fantastic. Stayed in lowest cabin category possible and it was just fine. Cabin a bit small but an amazing bathroom that easily accommodated two woman and all their "stuff"! Two special dietary needs (a vegetarian and someone gluten free) were beautifully handled. Onboard programs/entertainment was delightful. Loved the personal quiet sets that each passenger had for shore excursions. Made it so easy to hear every word the tour guide had to say. On that note, the local guides that met our groups at each port were very good and knew their stuff. We were lucky and had good weather and rivers that were 100% passable. Never had to do any of the dreaded "ship swaps"! Our cruise director, Meike, was charming, classy and well informed. Tony, the pianist each day, was wonderful. Bar/dining room staff (shoutout to Georgi, Stephen and Laaaaadies-man) was solicitous and made you feel like you were Dining in a 5 star restaurant each day. Housekeeping were right on point (thanks, Nenad!). One additional thing...we were two girlfriends traveling together. It was a very comfortable situation and we never felt like we were the odd men out! Again, can't rate our experience high enough. Have booked another Viking cruise in May of 2017. Can't wait!! SO.......2 First Cousins and their spouses and my wife and I talked about doing this together and we even had 3 meetings to discuss this Grand European River Boat Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest in the summer of 2015. Well on June 2nd, 2016, this "DREAM" became a REALITY for ALL of us. Talk about having a FANTASTIC Time on the Viking Gefjon would be difficult to put into words other than JUST DO IT!!! IF you want to be PAMPERED, then Viking will MEET your expectations for sure with Service, FOOD and Excursions!! The Food was 5 Star.....the Wine and Beer with Lunch and Dinner was Great too! The deserts.......well I GAINED 9 lbs on this trip so READ between the lines!! ALL the ports and tours were very interesting and informative also. We had a cabin that the widow slid open, but no balcony which was fine as we really weren't in the cabin that often. There are so many COMFORTABLE places to relax on this ship that this really wasn't an issue. We have always had a Balcony or better on all our Ocean cruises, but this was OK. All I can say is that this River Cruise really SPOILED US as now we probably won't want to go on the Ocean again...LOL!! PS: I did book a 7 night Caribbean Cruise for this coming November. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had heard good reports about Viking, and we also liked the length and destinations of this cruise. We had been to several of the stops along the way before, but we wanted to return to see them again. The cruise exceeded all that we had heard. The service, the staff, the food, the itinerary, and every other detail were absolutely perfect. When river conditions (high water) altered our normal itinerary, Viking handled the logistics seamlessly so that we did not miss anything and they did it without any inconvenience to us. For those who are not sure about a cruise, I would say several things. First, the ride was smooth as glass - no worries about seasickness. Second, it was wonderful to see so much while only unpacking once, unlike bus/train tours between hotels with multiple packing/unpacking episodes. Third, we really enjoyed getting to know other people on the ship - it was small enough that you could really do this. Fourth, the ship was very comfortable and virtually noiseless. I would DEFINITELY book with Viking again. Read Less

Itinerary - it took us through the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Our room was conformable, maybe a little smaller than the usual hotel room, but everything we needed was there, including bath supplies. We had a room with a veranda which allowed us to sit and watch the scenery as we sailed. The room was cleaned and freshened two or three times a day. In fact the whole ship was always being cleaned and kept in pristine condition. There were only 150 passengers which made for an intimate trip. The guests were mostly polite, congenial, not "party animals" making for an enjoyable atmosphere aboard ship. The food was excellent - many selections at all meals, with snacks always available (although we didn't need any extra foods) and the staff were the best I have encountered - well trained, polite, attentive to our every needs. The walking tours of the cities we visited allowed us to discover culture and history. The tours were relaxed. We would certainly recommend Viking River Cruises and plan to travel with them again soon. Read Less

My husband surprised me with this cruise to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. A Rhine River/Danube River cruise was at the top of my wish list, but I never dreamed that this would become a reality. The whole experience was magical for me. I didn't want to sleep. I didn't want to miss out on what surprise might be around the next bend in the river. I wanted to soak in every moment, often sitting on our veranda watching the ripples on the river in the moonlight, as our ship silently made its way to the next port-of-call. The shore excursions were well organized with friendly guides who gave us complete history lessons about the town we were visiting and its surrounds. Every guide spoke beautiful English with a sense of humor, even though English was not their first language. All staff were courteous and friendly and it wasn't too long before they were calling us by name. We were always greeted with a smile. The food and service was 5 star. The evening entertainment, be it an instrumental concert, an operatic performance, quiz games and fun team nights, or relaxing to beautiful easy-listening piano music, was enjoyable and filled with laughter.
