The hardest part of our entire trip was the US to Europe flight and extremely long layover. But once the Viking staff member met us upon arrival, everything from that point on went as smoothly as we ever could have imagined. The ship's Captain, Director and staff were outstanding. They promptly and cheerfully responded to our every question or request for assistance. The food was superb, and every meal was a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Our stateroom was quite roomy and well appointed and the views from our balcony were breathtaking. The onboard features including the ship's tour, the cookie making demonstration, the glass blowing exhibit, and the classical music concert were delightful. Though the evening entertainment was limited to a piano bar, the pianist was talented and quite entertaining. The Excursions and local guides were excellent. We had lots of choices and ample free time in virtually every port. And upon arrival back at the ship, we were greeted with either a cocktail, an amuse bouche, or a sweet treat. The welcome reception, Captain's Reception, and farewell reception were perfect opportunities to meet new friends or reconnect with friends from previous Viking cruises. We plan to keep in touch with a number of the new friends we made on this cruise. It is no exaggeration to say that every detail of the cruise from beginning to end was perfectly planned and flawlessly executed. We were so impressed, we have already scheduled our next cruise. This was our second cruise, first with Viking. We did the Heart of Germany cruise for the holidays. Pros: The ship was amazing. Brand new this season. Clean and modern. The service on the boat was out of this world. The crew was insanely committed to ensuring that all the passages had an amazing time. I don't think that their was a single time we walked by them without one of them asking if we need anything or saying hi. The captain was true leader among them. He was always working. Weather it was carrying luggage to the rooms, putting out the gangway, or just ensuring all the guest were having a great time. We saw and talked to him very day, amazingly nice guy. The service staff was hard working and some of the best I have ever come across. Everyone from the cabin stewards to the servers in the restaurants. Can't say enough good things about the staff. The itinerary was great, all the included tours were informational and well run, and the tour guides were knowledgeable and kind. Those you do have to take some buses, some trip were up to 1.5 hours ride from the boat, Viking has their own fleet of luxury motor coaches with bathrooms and comfortable seats. We literally just had to choose which tour we wanted to go on (Short, regular, or extended) and they did all the work. There is plenty of free time in each destination for exploring on your own. There were little to no kids on the boat. Few teenagers, but they were all VERY well behaved. We got to meet great people from all around the world. The ship felt like a small community that we didn't want to leave by the end of our adventure! The food can be summed up with one word, SPECTACULAR. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were tasty and filling. VERY filling, I think I gained 15lbs. on this trip. Cons: There were a few cons, small details. The top deck was never able to be open due to the fact that on the Main river in Germany there were over 140 bridges that we passed under during our cruise. Some as low as a couple inches from the top of the boat. There is not fitness facility on the boat and the only track was on the top deck which was closed. The internet on the ship is slow, but it was fine for us. We were trying to disconnect from the world anyways. Summary: Overall I would highly recommend this cruise line and the Heart of Germany itinerary. Germany is a gorgeous country that everyone should experience once in their life. We have already booked out next cruise, 15 days in the Baltic! We look forward to travel with them again. Read Less

My 85 year old mother had always wanted to take a river cruise in Germany. So, we decided to treat her this past year and take her on the Christmas Markets' cruise. My husband and I have cruised before (not Viking), but I have to say that this was the most enjoyable and relaxing cruise we have ever taken. Viking thought of everything and made the experience amazing. All ports had excursions that were free but incredibly informative and fun. The food was incredible, the crew fantastic and the small size of the ship made it all very intimate and comfortable. No shoving or waiting in line at a buffet, or paying extra for fine dining. There was always room in the dining room as well as the common areas without feeling like we were crowded at all. Viking also excelled at having cultural experiences on the ship that were not only informative, but also very entertaining as well. No casino (thank you!) or extravaganzas - just a very relaxing and completely enjoyable trip. It was so nice to have Viking plan everything out, down to the smallest detail, and not have to worry about logistics or make decisions that after awhile, become tiresome and sometimes stressful. We started our cruise in Nuremberg, where Viking met us at the airport and efficiently took us to the ship. Each night, the cruise director gave an overview of what was happening the following day and described the excursions. Our tours were always with English-speaking natives (one tour was with an expat from the US). We were given headsets so that we were able to hear the guides, and we didn't have to crowd around them traveling in a pack. Each and every tour guide was delightful. We also always had free time in each port for shopping or more sightseeing. When we returned, the first thing I said to everyone who asked me about the cruise was, "I can't recommend Viking highly-enough. It was truly wonderful!" Read Less

The Gefjon is one of the newer Viking river ships and it is spectacular! We have cruised with Viking for many years and will continue for many more. The customer service is the best and their food is comparable to any five star restaurant. My husband didn't care for one of the entrees he chose one night and they took it away and cooked him a steak. The crew always wants you to be satisfied no matter what you are doing or eating. This was a Christmas market cruise so the best thing was the close ports to the market area and city center. You don't get that on ocean cruises. After our daily walking tour (which is included in the price of the cruise) we always had time on our own to shop or just wander around our port. Everyone needs to take at least one cruise with Viking. You won't be disappointed. Read Less

a bit hesitant to go on a river cruise. Seen the commercials-- they looked nice but you never know. From the moment we boarded the ship we were NEVER disappointed in anything! The crew could not do enough for everyone. There was not one thing that we could want for that they could not do for each passenger--well maybe the weather :) The ship was immaculate- bathroom spotless, under the bed not one dust ball or piece of dirt. restaurant was efficient and professional while maintaining a level of warmth to the passengers. Activities were available at different levels of ability. There were slow tours if you did not want to run around like crazy and enjoy the scenery. Faster ones for the more adventurous who tried to cram in as much as they could in a short time frame. We took a cabin with a veranda - which I recommend. Even though the weather was at best fair-- we did get to open the door and get fresh air and watch the beautiful castles along the river go by. We are trying to think about our next trip when we save up some money!\ Read Less

This was a wonderful cruise - something you will never forget. The rooms are great, good food and love that you get free drinks with lunch and dinner. Met some wonderful friends and the crew was friendly and polite. There were a few waiters that were not up to Viking standards but most were wonderful. Carl, our cruise director, was quite funny and excellent with his info. We really did not get into the entertainment because we were pretty tired every night. The excursions keep you busy and we saw so much. Passau was our favorite port. We did have to change ships due to low water but it was not an issue and they more than made up for it by giving us all a free lunch in another town. Quite a treat!! We have to say that the staff on Viking Ve seemed to be better all around than the Gefjon we transferred to. First time we had cruised on a smaller ship and they have spoiled us for sure. So easy getting on (we had done a three day pre visit to Prague) and the bus ride was very comfortable -when we got to the ship there was no waiting - no rushing. We cruised from Budapest (beautiful city) to Amsterdam. Cruised out of Budapest at night - stunning!! The ship was always being cleaned and every time you went on an excursion they would give you some water to take along. The stewards were awesome and always had our room spotless. Everything was great!! Viking definitely has it together in river cruising. Really didn't need a balcony since was pretty cold most of the time. We would love to do it again. Read Less

I had been wanting to make this River Cruise for a long time and finally booked it! It was late October and the colors were beautiful and the weather quite good although cool. This was a most amazing cruise. We could continually see the beautiful countryside. This ship was a nice size and every part of it was immaculate. The staff and crew were very friendly and fun. Food was excellent. The tours were very good and provided in each place by experienced guides that were generally local. Everything was exceedingly well organized and unexpected things were handled quickly and well. We had to change ships because of water level changes. Our bags were handled efficiently and we were transported to the second ship without delay. Both ships had to be cleaned in a very short order to accommodate the exchange. The meticulous attention to detail was impressive-----on the first ship I had requested an extra pillow ---and when we arrived at the second ship I had a second pillow on my bed already. Impressive. The room was small as expected but we had everything we needed at all times. Very nice bathroom with warm floor :). Dining was excellent with several choices always available and included foods of the region. It was open seating so we were able to meet new people or not as we pleased. Usually there was casual dining also. The ship has huge Windows and comfortable furniture to relax and view scenery or visit with others at any time we were onboard. The best tour I have ever been on for sure. Read Less

The itinerary was wonderful--so many breathtaking sights and first rate experiences! Every bend in the river provided views of stunning castles, vineyards, churches, or quaint towns! The cabins were comfortable with plenty of storage areas. The public areas were roomy with floor to ceiling windows and comfortable seating to view the fantastic scenery if you didn't want to sit on the open deck. The staff seemed to anticipate our every need. MIf it was raining, umbrellas were handy. On cold days, there were warm blankets and specialty hot drinks. The food on board ship was very good, and we always had several choices for each meal throughout the day. Often regional specialties were highlighted. Fresh baked cookies were always available. Wine and soda were always available at no charge with our meal. Often we docked right in the middle of the city. How convenient!! The shore excursions were very organized, and we all had earphones so we could hear our guide. Our cruise director was very knowledgeable and gave educational talks about the area we would be visiting before each port. After awhile the churches started running together though! There was a nice balance between organized tours and time for us to explore on our own. One day several of us went with the chef to a farmers market--rode the subway and sampled lots of regional foods--FUN!! Entertainment on board the ship highlighted the region. Some nights there was only a piano playe, but by the end of the day everyone was tired and gladly retired early!! Read Less

We just got back from an amazing River Cruise through Europe with Viking that was almost perfect. The ship was only 3 months old and looked it, nice and shiny. The crew could not have treated us any better ! They were great ! My Wife and I aren't very fussy when it comes to food, it was good, but, I can see where a "Foodie" type person might complain. The breakfast buffet was great and the lunches were fine either in the Main Dining Room or the Aquavit Terrace. The dinners in the Dining Room were fine, but, just not special. The portions were small, fine for us, but, if you're big eater you'll need a double order. The complimentary Wine for Lunch & Dinner were great, no complaints at all. Those people that have complained about the Wine don't seem to realize that the Wine is coming from a completely different area than you're probably not use to. You may not like it, but, it's not because it's "bad" you're just not familiar with the taste from the Wine from this area. Our Balcony Room was great. A little small, but, it was well organized and once we emptied our luggage everything fit. The shower was plenty big enough for us and overall the bathroom was perfect. Our balcony was a little small, but, again, perfect for us. Our Room Steward was great. We were hardly in our room, but, the TV had several choices and the WiFi worked ok most of the time. We have travelled a lot in the past and have done the Moscow to St Petersberg River Cruise in the past, but, we had never been to anywhere we went on this Cruise. We're in our 60s, but, we're pretty active. We saw and did everything we could. We went on every excusion offered by Viking and as many optional excursions as we could fit in. When we we'ren't on a Tour and were cruising down the different Rivers we were on top of the ship or in the front of the ship in the Aquavit Lounge. We literally did not want to miss a thing ! Even at night there were things to see along the way. We hated to go to bed at night afraid we would miss some amazing views. If you couldn't walk into town, the Buses that took you on our excursions were all 1st class and all of them had restrooms. If you wanted to see the sights and learn about what you were seeing the opportunity was there. With one exception all of the guides on the excursions were very knowledgeable. Some of the optional excursions Costs were a little high, but, worth it. The Mozart - Strauss Concert in Vienna was great ! Not what I would normally listen to, but, it wasn't just a concert, it was a very entertaining show ! We had a problem in the middle of the Cruise. The River was too low for us to continue after Nuremberg. So before we left on our Tour we packed our luggage and after the Tour we were bussed to Passau where our luggage was waiting in the same room in another new Viking Ship the Ve. We just switched Ships with the people on the Ve that couldn't go upstream because of the low water. It was flawless. Now for a couple of minor problems. Our optional Tour in Cologne for 44 Euros was advertised at 4 hours to the Augustusburg Palace(which was great) and then the Falkenlust Hunting Lodge and their baroque gardens. The Hunting Lodge and gardens were closed. The Guide said, "Oh, the Lodge wasn't that great afterall" ! we were back in 3 hours. When I talked to Carl West the Cruise Director, he wasn't very sympathetic, "oh, ok, that's good to know for the future". But, didn't offer me anything other than sympathy. I organized a group of 9, we spent close to $75,000. At the end of the Cruise when I asked for a cab to the Castle Hilton($10 Euros) I think that would have been nice compensation, but, no that was against Viking's rules. But, yet earlier Carl had screwed up our Bus back from Regensburg to Passau and had to get a cab for 2 for a 4 hour trip ! I think that cost considerably more than $10 Euros. The other thing that is quite a concern. There is virtually no security on board. We were alble to come and go as we pleased. We really only had a room key. In Passau there was an older Viking Ship docked not far from us. We walked right on and walked around taking pictures with not one Viking person asking us for anything. Then, the last night we were in Budapest, our friend's daughter had a room to herself and at 11 o'clock she was asleep when a couple burst into her room and started yelling at her, "what are you doing in our room, get out, get out" ! We were docked next to another Viking Ship and we were on the inside, but, the Captain took our ship for a little evening tour to see the lights of Budapest and when we came back we parked on the outside. When the couple came back, they thought their ship were still on the outside and went to my friend's daughter's room, which they thought was their room and their key didn't work so they went to the Desk and the Desk personnel gave them a new key without checking any identification ! In this day and age I can't believe Security is so lax ! Anyway, other than that a Great Cruise ! Read Less

We were one of the ships that was caught up in the low water problems. The change to another ship was handled so well we could not believe. It was amazing - so smooth, whilst we heard guests from another cruise line that there trip had to be stopped and guests had the option to fly home or stay in a hotel and get bused every day to another destination. We were lucky that we booked VIKING. During the change we saw some more of the countryside, got a nice lunch in local restaurant and after the change all was run as scheduled we did not miss any of the promised tours until the end of our trip. It was just great - not more to mention - compliments to all staff and crew . Ship and its crew was just amazing. From the housekeeping staff, kitchen staff and restaurant, all making sure that service is provided at all times. Very well ran ship, congratulations. We will definitely travel with Viking again and looking forward to do so soon. Read Less

We flew to Amsterdam one day early and stayed at the Hampshire American for 1 night, very nice and excellent location. We did a HOHO canal boat tour and walked around in our own. We took a cab to the ship around noon, left our luggage and joined the ship for their walking tour. We went with two other couples and ate together all of the dinners at a table for 6. Service was outstanding and the meals always had enough choices for everyone to enjoy. Breakfast and lunch on board was sitting with our friends, new friends or just ourselves, all good. Carl, our cruise direct was outstanding, he was always there to announce next day's activities, taking pictures or answer questions. The thumb drive of the trip is worth the $18, even when taking a ton of my own pictures. We also had to change ships half way thru do to low water levels, but was done while we were on an excursion and then a 2 hours bus trip. Having to pack was not something I enjoyed, but the staff moved everything very, even soda from the frig. We did all the included excursions and signed up for the extra concert in Vienna, which was very good. There is a lovely sun deck, chairs, shuffle board and a two hole putting green. Also a prefect place to watch coming into Budapest at night. The wine and beer at lunch were very drinkable and nice that they were included, also nice we could bring on board anything else we wanted to drink. We would highly recommend Viking River cruises. This was a very new ship, and so was the second one. (Viking has so many ships doing the European Grand Tour we just switched with one coming up from Budapest) Read Less

Gefjon - July 2015: It was indeed a trip of a lifetime, and Viking did a great job! Everyone, from a deckhand to the Captain, did everything that they could to make it so for us -- and we really appreciated it. We sailed the Grand European Trip from Budapest to Amsterdam. The Gefjon was only 70 days in commission at the start of our trip - but you would have never known it by the way everything happened on time, cheerfully and with every detail taken care of in advance. Everyone ends up with several people in the crew that they seem to enjoy being with and we had several crew members that made the trip even more special - I especially remember Georgi, one of our waiters, who did a really great job taking care of us. I don't remember all the names, but we have some great pictures which will help the memories remain fresh. The dining room, terrace and bar were just excellent, and the omlet man, who's name I cannot remember, did a wonderful job there and on the grill out front. The young bartenderess was sweet and mixed us many a great drink. If you go on one of the "long ships" you are in for a treat! And do get a cabin with the veranda so you can spend some time just watching live along the river take place, mile after mile, never fast, but always changing right before your eyes. My wife considered that time one of her favorite memories of the trip. And part of the price of the trip were all the excursions that were set up for us. One every day and never too long or hard or boring, ever. And we always made it back in time to eat another wonderful meal! The food was varied, ethnic and well prepared. My only complaint is that we were offered bread pudding only once! And I guess that is really a good thing since I can't resist and it was great and I would not have fit into anything to go home in after 15 days! Both our arrival in Budapest, with it's trip to the boat and our trip to the airport in Amsterdam was handled with cheerfulness and efficiency. Thanks to all those fine folks! All in all this was a great cruise and when I asked I tell folks that it is as good as the TV ads make it seem to be -- ONLY BETTER! Read Less

This was our second Viking River Cruise. Our first, Rhine Getaway (Amsterdam to Basel) was wonderful, but just too short! So we thoroughly enjoyed this 15 day cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. We booked everything through Viking and were very pleased with the flight and transportation to the Marriott Hotel on the riverfront in Budapest. (Pest). Lovely hotel with excellent food, river views from our room, and a pleasant and very helpful staff. Viking ships are beautiful, the excursions are excellent, dining is delightful with new, interesting, well-travelled friends every meal! We learned so much from the personal stories of the top-notch local guides in city centers, cathedrals, castles, ancient ruins, concert venues, historical sites, bar hops...yes!... and countryside trips! And did I mention from our program director, Carl!! He also took fabulous photos of the day to be viewed in the bar at night. The piano bar was fun after dinner and there is a small dance floor! We were also entertained by fabulous local musical groups, glass blowers, or maybe a slide show. Or visit with other travelers, or go out on deck and enjoy the evening cruise after a busy day of sightseeing. Each day there is an included tour, followed by free time in the city, an optional tour, or cruising the river after lunch. Disembarkation is well organized as is everything with Viking. We were the first group to leave and Rene was there early to make sure all the luggage was loaded in the vehicle and personally sent us on our way to the airport. Loved it! Read Less

The cruise was First Class. Some issues as we did not take the Viking precruise hotels or air fare. When we did finally locate the ship in Budapest, Tour Director acted like it was our fault that we did not know of the ship being moved to a new docking area and commented that if we had purchase the Viking pre cruise hotel package they would have handled it. His sour reception. The Captain offered to help us carry our bags on board. Wow, The Captain set the standard for the Crew through out the Cruise. He was excellent, warm and approachable. I will seek to go on his ship next we cruise in Europe. We were in Europe for a month+ and the Viking Cruise was for only a part of our time in Europe. Because we had a rental car waiting in Amsterdam it seemed to throw the disembarkation system a loop. Oh well. Crew Members were very excellent. On a par or superior to Disney Crew Members. Rooms were spacious considering the ship's size requirements. Food service was very good. We enjoyed the walking tour guides suggestions of where eat like a local. Dinner meals took a long time 2 1/2 to 3 hours. So we ate on the bow with the limited menu or in our room with items purchased ashore. We enjoyed the pre dinner lecture or talks. The pre view of the next days stop & tours was nice. Really enjoyed being able to visit the Bridge of the ship to observe and learn how the ship was being handled. We will book again with Viking next season. As well as recommended Viking to our Friends. We enjoyed Budapest very much. In fact we are planning on returning there next year. We arrived in Paris where we spent two wonderful nights at the L''Hotel du Collectionneur, where Viking included a Paris City Tour...the city of lights! We also saw the Arc de Triomphe, Opera Garnier Palace, Louvre Museum, Notre Dame, Paris Town Hall, Eiffel Tower, and many more fantastic sights! Every evening we walked to different local restaurants in the area and were never disappointed with the food...save room for the desserts! On the third day we left for Luxembourg, where we saw the American Cemetery where many Americans lost their lives during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. This is also where General George Patton is buried. A place where you only hear the birds singing, as all of us are in a very solemn mood as we take in row after row after row of headstones with the names of all of the fallen soldiers! We then go on to Trier where Viking has a wonderful welcoming reception before dinner aboard the Viking Gefjon's maiden voyage! The next day Trier, Germany's oldest city, awaited us for a tour of the Roman Amphitheater and the Roman Baths and the Roman City Gates called Porta Nigra, Trier Cathedral and the Church of our Lady. We then cruised on to Bernkastel later in the afternoon and walked on the cobbled streets where you can see half timbered houses, the town hall and the town gate. The next day we went to Cochem and Koblenz...we saw Reichsburg Castle which was built more than a thousand years ago! We had time afterwards to do some shopping before we cruised on to Koblenz with all of it's hills of vineyards! Koblenz became a city in the 13th century. We then cruised on to more beautiful old cities over the next 4 days including the middle Rhine and the Rudesheim area where we saw the Marksburg Castle and took an optional wine tasting tour which we thoroughly enjoyed! Everyone will enjoy seeing Heidelburg and it's castle and the walk through the old town center, the 600 year old University, which is Germany's oldest. We then headed on to Speyer where we had free time to explore on our own! The next day we had a walking tour of Strasbourg, France, with all of it's many historical sights. Our vacation was coming to an end with our last stop in Basel, Switzerland, with all of it's historic history and it's Lackerli cookies! The excursion guides are very knowledgeable and are able to answer almost all of the questions you may have. Viking has the port excursions organized very well so that you are in relatively small groups with ear pieces so that you can hear everything that the excursion guide says. These tours can be partially by bus as well as the majority of the excursion walking. Usually after every tour you will have some free time to get lunch, shop, or sight see further on your own. Before you leave the ship you can pick up a small map of where you will be going...these are usually maps of the old city centers and how to get back to the ship or who to call if you should get lost...they haven't lost anyone yet! Traveling with Viking is fantastic...they pick you up at the airport and get you to your hotel if you are staying for a couple of days before your cruise, and then pick you up at the hotel and get you to the ship for embarkation. Viking has embarkation and disembarking so organized you never even have to pick up your luggage...you do have to pack it though! The staterooms are all spotless and the beds are very comfortable with staff that are meticulous with their cleaning and replenishing of your stateroom amenties. There is plenty of storage for all of your clothes, luggage, toiletries, etc.! You will feel right at home in your stateroom for the time that Viking is taking care of you! You will enjoy all of the afternoon and evening programs and demonstrations that they offer, as well as the piano player during the day and evening! Food on board is wonderful with several selections at every meal, as well as beer and wine with every meal. Being a coffee drinker I was ecstatic that you could get coffee and tea 24 hours a day and breakfast in your room if you desired. Viking is first class all the way...they know how to take care of their cruisers! The port and shore excursions are excellent and very well organized and are all included in your price, except for a few that they may offer, but these would not be necessary to be able to experience a wonderful vacation cruise with Viking! We will be leaving for another cruise later this year and have already booked another one for next year...we love Viking River Cruises! Read Less

We were on the Viking longship Gefjon inaugural cruise and could not have been more pleased with the itinerary and level of service that we enjoyed. We have cruised ocean going vessels before but as this was our first river cruise we were pleased with the more intimate experience. Docking in small towns and never being very far away from the action has its advantages. The crew members were all exceptional and eager to make our experience a memorable one. The Rhine Rhapsody cruise is a new addition for Viking and and featured the Moselle and Rhine rivers. The two rivers could not be more different with the Moselle narrower and bucolic while the Rhine had much more commercial traffic and faster moving. I would definitely recommend this cruise as well as Viking cruise lines for a river cruise. I had read some negative reviews from previous Viking travelers, but we experienced none of those Read Less
