I chose this cruise to revisit some of the countries I had visited years ago. Within an hour of stepping onto the ship, I realized that I had been living under a rock. Why hadn't I known about this cruise line before? I realized, also, that I will never take an ocean cruise again! The intimacy, the service, the environment, etc. was just superb! The entertainment, for the most part, was fun and of interest, especially the local performers. The shore excursions were well-chosen, and the fact that we could opt out, even mid-excursion, was appreciated. The fact that we were able to dine alone or to meet new friends at each meal enhanced the experience. I look forward to more travel with Viking. In fact, I am already signed up for the Budapest to Nuremberg trip this October! Who would guess that I would be traveling twice to Europe in one year?! Read Less

I enjoy traveling to new places and accompanied a friend, who is a retired History teacher. The Lofn was my first experience on a Longship and quite different from cruising on big ocean liners, but very nice. The ports were wonderful. Our guides were fantastic. Everything was very well planned. I would have enjoyed more evening entertainment. A dress code for dinner would have been appreciated-jeans are fine during the day, but no jeans and t shirts for dinner. Including a tour of Ann Frank's house would have been appreciated. My friend waited 2 1/2 hours in line. Visiting the many cathedrals was a highlight of my trip. The tulips were gorgeous the third week in April. The dining hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner accommodated our tour times. Rene was a great entertainment director. The waitstaff went above and beyond to make sure everyone was pleased with service, food and special diets. Being able to tour the galley was an unexpected treat. Read Less

We had greatly enjoyed two previous trips with Viking leaving from Moscow and Budapest and chose a route that was new to us and included going through an area that some ancestors came from and ended in Switzerland where we had family ties. The ship was first class with very comfortable dining and meeting areas and always in perfect order. We always looked forward to meal time and the many selections to choose from, and appreciated the opportunity to occasionally order off menu. All the staff, with their varied responsibilities, were professional, knowledgeable and personable. There was no doubt that the crew was there to support and have "happy" customers. The officers were readily available, and were quite visible throughout the trip including the evening events. It seemed like some of them had second jobs as entertainers. Our cabin was very comfortable and excellently maintained. I don't believe we missed any of the organized events. The one thing I think that could be improved on this trip is the shore excursions. They seemed to be totally time driven. If you stopped to look at something of interest you risked getting left behind. We certainly have hopes for a fourth Viking trip. Read Less

We chose the particular cruise as Viking offered some very good prices for the time of our departure. From the time we were picked up until arrived on board we were treated very well. The checking in ran like a Swiss clock. Got to our cabin and luggage was right behind us. Cabin was immaculate and young man who brought luggage explained everything. From our first evening in cocktail lounge to our first meal personnel were exceptional. We never had a disappointing meal and the menu pretty much coincided with locale where the boat was on The River Rhine. If you needed anything special or extra with your meal they were very obliging. The tours were very user friendly, even special accommodations for older people (like me) who needed extra time or assistance. All tours were extremely well conducted by knowledgeable personnel. Entire trip went to fast but, every moment was enjoyable. We have recommended Viking River cruises to our friends. If all goes well we are looking forward to another adventure. Read Less

Needed to return to this part of the world in order to reminisce and just enjoy! Why not try a new adventure? Where have I been? Within an hour of stepping onto the Lofn, I knew that I would NEVER take an ocean cruise again. The intimacy of the entire experience is definitely a plus. Who cared if we had the cheapest room in the hold? We only slept there...and besides, the room was lovely. We were at water's level...kind of interesting, actually. We could definitely hear the water slosh, but it had that kind of 'muffling out the noise' serenity. About 140 passengers (I think) and 50 staff...I guess that speaks for itself, in regard to service = excellent. It was an experience to be on top during the first passing through the locks. The evening lights and daytime views are only now memories, but they were enjoyed on a daily basis! We received service at the top while viewing! Who would guess the weather would be well--after all, we had heard that the previous week's group experienced rain for the entire trip! It was in the 70s for us all week! There couldn't have been a more beautiful week for us to visit the cities in Switzerland, Germany, France, and Nederland. Heck...the highlight of the shopping venture in Koln was a proposal of marriage from a German known to me for only 4 hours. Nuts? I can't make this up...Needless to say, it was just an afternoon to remember. Read Less

We chose this Viking River Cruise from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, Holland as a real "bucket-list" trip. This cruise turned out to be the VERY best one we have ever taken in almost 47 years of marriage. All tours (planned and optional) were absolutely superbly guided by professional and interesting personnel. All meals were prepared to perfection. The total crew were exceptionally kind and professional and always had our wishes answered literally before we had even thought of them. We cannot say enough positive things about our cruise...except we are going on another Viking River Cruise in 2017! Our cabin was perfect for us and the ship was newly built and functioned well (the tour through the engine room was fascinating, and very informative and you realized how well maintained everything on the ship was). Our Tour Director was very professional and had answers to every one of the thousand questions asked every day...entertainment was well thought of for every age on board. We also toured the Anne Frank House. Along the trip, we visited towns of our ancestors to see how they lived. We saw and toured windmills and learned their history and function. We enjoyed the Food & Wine excursion. It was excellent. We progressed through the town, eating and learning about the cookies, cheeses and wine. Plus, we had a private tour of the cathedral and the fabulous astronomical clock. All this was included. The fabulous dinners were prepared by a top notch chefs and delivered by top notch waiters. We are return customers with Viking River Cruises because they are simply so good at everything they do. We did not worry about a thing from start to finish. We did the precruise in Amsterdam so we could go to the Keukenhof Tulip Festival, Anne Frank House and the museums. All of these experiences were wonderful. Our travel from the airport to our hotel in Amsterdam and then on to the ship was seamless. Once on the Lofn everything was perfection. Rene, our cruise director, was so entertaining and clearly loved his job. Our French Balcony cabin was ideal for our needs, always kept clean by our friendly steward and the bathroom was roomy, the lighting in the bathroom was excellent, the heated floors were wonderful and the toiletries were very nice. We enjoyed all of our meals and the wines served by well-trained staff. We enjoyed all of the shore excursions and even did some of the extra tours to take advantage of every opportunity while we were sailing the Rhine. The evening entertainment was also very nice with a wide variety of experiences offered. We'll be sailing on the Seine July 23rd with Viking as we are so pleased with our experiences with Viking. The staff was very courteous and responsive to our needs, the meals were interesting and delicious, and the excursions lead by seasoned locals were fun and informative. We added the two day pre-sailing option at the Raddison Blu which was a great opportunity to get acclimated to the time change and enjoy the city. The added Sunday morning progressive food and wine noshing excursion thru the streets of Amsterdam was my favorite. Program Director, Rene, was one of the highlights of the cruise with his energy to see every day ran smoothly. His outstanding personality and wit kept us laughing. Friends had planned to go on this river cruise. They invited us to join them. Why Not? We did and found they also invited another couple with whom they were friends. The six of us got to know each other and found we enjoyed being together. This cruise, the shore excursions and port locations allowed us to learn about different areas and about each of our interests. All of us enjoyed every community we visited. Each of us, during dinner discussion following the 'home visits' were ecstatic about the experience. Fortunately, each of us visited a different home thus, we had many stories to share. Every one positive and enriching. A side benefit is that we learned about our fellow passengers who shared our home visit. That created a link for us to expand our relationships with fellow passengers. Made for a 'neighborhood' feeling on-board.* The staff were well trained, warm, helpful, eager to please and sincere. Many of them learned passenger's names as well as beverage and food preferences. This was impressive. Food choices, quantity and quality were 'off the chart'. The ship, rooms and public areas were immaculate. The crew responsible for exterior ship maintenance, handling, docking and lock passage were skillful, swift, safety oriented and efficient. Prior to my 'Viking experience" I expected an above average experience. My expectations were destroyed immediately and continuously. This company, staff, equipment, training, execution and sincerity were impeccable. Congratulations to all! We six 'guests', not passengers, will select VIKING above all other choices for our next adventure. * I encourage Viking management to expand this 'home visit' program/experience. Further, I suggest a simple briefing about the Viking organization, especially, in their country. What I urge is not an indoctrination program simply an understanding of what the company hopes to provide through these visits. Read Less

We really appreciated the extra effort that he made for his passengers. The excursions were fun and the optional excursions were reasonably priced. It was easy to make new friends and we formed some wonderful friendships. The cruise director kept everyone well informed at the end of every day, and kept things moving smoothly all through the day. This was our first trip to Europe. We let Viking handle everything. Left Dulles on 4/13, landed in Amsterdam, were met by Viking guide, right to clean, modern van to our hotel, the Radissan Blue for 2 nights to recover from our jet lag which was a good idea! We explored the town ad relaxed. On embarkation day, we were met by Viking vans, had our luggage loaded and whisked to our ship, the Viking Loft, luggage taken to our cabin and we were set. Hot moist towels and snacks to take the edge off. First class all the way! First day we toured Amsterdam with a canal cruise. This was a Tulips and Windmills cruise and the flowers and weather did not disappoint us. Had some rain but mostly at night and no tours were a washout. The ship was spotless and gleaming. I am a Coast Guard vet and I look at the details, safety, crew, ship condition, etc. This Viking ship is a class act! Dining was exceptional, nothing left to chance. Occasionally, the service was a little slow, but the wine and beer was included, so no problem there. Let me say this: ALL CREW MEMBERS were supportive and cheerful. EVERYONE! One lady had a little too much to drink and they helped her to her cabin without any problem. One thing- This is not a "Mega Ship" with all the bars, casino, etc. There is a lounge with a piano bar and you can dance or just relax. Shore excursions were included and there were some optional ones at a modest price. Slow walkers were taken care of. Ports were varied and interesting. DO NOT MISS KULKENHOFF GARDENS! Flowers everywhere, no charge. Read Less

The ship, the Viking Lofn, was beautiful and our French balcony cabin was a delight to stay in with great amenities. The food was excellent with plenty of culinary options including a dinner menu that changed nightly while still having several excellent standard options that were offered both in the dining room and on the ships terrace. I particularly enjoyed the kitchen tour and chance to meet the cooks who were happy to pose for a picture with me. I don't ever want to travel on a huge cruise ship. You really get the opportunity to meet and get to know the other passengers. Smoothest embarkation we've ever experienced. Disembarkation was easy, too. The museums in Amtserdam are a don't miss. It is a good idea to make your reservations way in advance, on line. We went to the VanGogh - amazing. Weren't able to get tickets to the Anne Frank House. We didn't try early enough. Enjoyed the included tours in each port. We even visited a local home in Hoorn for desert and coffee/tea. A relative invited me to go on this cruise, Tulips and Windmills. Since ours was the first cruise of the season, I was able to check in as soon as I arrived late in the morning. The cruise director himself carried my luggage to the cabin! It was quick and easy to register. I am a vegetarian and was pleased with the selections. The outstanding maitre d'hotel checked with me each morning to be sure the daily options were suitable, and they always were. There were pastries for the early risers at the coffee station, and cookies in the afternoon. Food was delicious, especially the breads. The Lofn was one of the newer ships in the fleet and was quite impressive. There were plenty of activities in the evening in the lounge and all were fun. The best part of the cruise, of course, was the staff. They truly are Viking River Cruise's best ambassadors. Without exception, the crew members were attentive, polite and eager to please, always with smiles on their faces. They would not let us lift a finger. Viking River Cruises are lucky to have such wonderful employees. The shore cruises were very interesting and the guides were quite knowledgeable. It was quite a "show" to watch the captain and other members of the navigation team maneuver the ship so carefully through the many, narrow locks. The home visit in Hoorn was the high point for me. Our hostess was very pleasant and seemed to enjoy the visit as much as we did. I would definitely go on another cruise, with the hope that I might see some the crew again. My Mother and I have just completed a river cruise on the Viking Skirnir and Lofn from Amsterdam to Budapest. At 85 years of age, this was the pinnacle of her 'bucket list' and an epic journey from Australia to Europe. I have been on many ocean cruises before but never a river cruise. I found river cruising very different to what I have experienced on ocean cruises. Firstly embarkation - forget lining up with the hoards - we arrived at the cruise terminal in Amsterdam about 3pm and were taken to the ship. No lines - straight onboard and greeted warmly by the reception staff. We were taken to our cabin and given an overview and our luggage was delivered promptly. We booked a full balcony cabin and my first impression was that it was extremely small - much smaller than any ocean liner cabin I have ever been in. However, it was well equipped and had plenty of storage space for the both of us. The heated bathroom floor was a nice touch in the chilly weather. After unpacking, we acquainted ourselves with our home for the next 14 nights. Both the Skirnir and the Lofn are beautiful new ships and very well appointed. Due to low water levels in the Rhine and Danube, we faced the possibility of 3 ship changes during our journey. However, luck was on our side and we only had one change after 3 days from the Skirnir to the Lofn. This was handled beautifully by the staff and when we arrived to board the Lofn, our luggage was in the same room as previously and we just had to unpack once more. The ship was identical in every way except for the name on the side. My Mother has very limited mobility and uses a walker. In hindsight, although this cruise was her dream, it was really not for her. River cruises are far from a relaxing journey. You are in a different port every day and most of the tours are walking tours. With the low river levels, the gangway was very steep and just getting her to the top was a major effort. All of these old cities have cobblestone streets which are not conducive to walker or wheelchair use. Consequently, she had to stay onboard many days and missed a lot of the tours. Our cruise director was amazing. He arranged for us to use the onboard wheelchair so that I could take her onshore to have a look around at some of the ports. This was not without resistance from the hotel manager who insisted that the wheelchair was to stay onboard for emergency use. I am fairly fit but it was not an easy task negotiating ancient cobblestone streets with the wheelchair. The food onboard was amazing - much better than on any ocean liner I have been on. The variety was fantastic and we did not have any dish repeated in the 14 days. The staff were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble. They took wonderful care of Mum. There was an elevator onboard that took us from deck 2 (where our cabin was) up to deck 3 where the lounge was situated. There was no elevator to the top deck but it was really too cold to go up there anyway. As I said previously, most of the tours are walking tours. They do have a 'leisurely tour' each day for those who are not as able as others. However, these tours still involve a lot of walking and I heard complaints from many people who struggled with them. We finally decided that Mum was not going to see much at all, so arranged for the Concierge to have a taxi waiting for us in each port to show us around. This worked out very well and we had excellent drivers who spoke English and were very knowledgeable. These cost us around 30 euros per hour each time. As a tour is included each day at no extra cost, this was an added charge for us but the only way that Mum was going to experience any of the towns at all. Wine, beer, etc is included with every meal including champagne with breakfast for those who wish to partake. I did not always like the wine so tipped the waiter 5 euros and was able to have anything I wanted. Drinks outside of meal times are reasonably priced and I found them substantially cheaper than our previous Celebrity ocean cruises. Entertainment is lacking with just a piano player in the evenings. One day we had a glass blower on board and he was very entertaining. We also had opera singers one night (totally not my cup of tea) and some German dancers (ditto). Again disembarkation is totally different to the big ocean liners. Our flight out of Budapest did not leave until 3pm, so we were able to stay onboard until noon (after vacating our room at 9am) and use all of the facilities. We had breakfast and also a light lunch before our taxi driver came to collect us. So to summarise - these cruises are not everyone and particularly not for anyone with mobility issues of any kind. You are on the go every day and it is quite tiring. Don't expect to be entertained onboard. Most of the cruising is done at night but if you cruise during the day, just expect to sit and watch the world go by. This is just my personal opinion but river cruising (at the moment) is not for me. I will continue to do ocean cruises for many years to come. Read Less

Simply stated, this cruise was fabulous. We lived 3 years and Europe and are experienced European travelers, and this may have been one of the best trips ever! We began with misgivings. An email several days before stated that we might have to change ships mid-cruise due to low water on the Danube, and that the cruise might begin in Komarom, HU, with a bus into Budapest for a tour. Both turned out to be true, and both were handled exceptionally smoothly by the staff, and were no discomfort or inconvenience to the guests. We began the cruise on the Vidar, from Komarom to Passau, and finished with the Lofn, from Nuremberg to Amsterdam. We took our first Viking cruise last year; "Portraits of Southern France," and obviously liked it enough to book the "Grand European," from which we just returned. We can hardly think of anything, we didn't like a great deal, and really, possibly a couple of things were merely acceptable, and not exceptional. The ship is superbly designed. The staff was gracious, friendly, professional and efficient. The food was wonderful, unique, and beautifully served. The places we visited, and there were many, were interesting and with time to see them quite well. The local guides were incredible; many were academic art historians, professors, etc., and had exceptional knowledge of the places and what was interesting to see and do. Perhaps best of all were the cultural activities, on board and off. Wonderful concerts. Professionally delivered lectures by professors and the cruise staff. A delightful presentation by the ship's engineer. Wine and food presentations. Mieke B., our program director, presented a number of very polished lectures, and was superbly organized, efficient, and above all, made the cruise a great deal of fun! On the last day we asked her, as an Amsterdam resident, for a restaurant recommendation, van Baerle, which was warm, lovely food and drink, and casually elegant. My wife says, and I agree, that we would go on a trip with her as PD again, anywhere, anytime! I would recommend this cruise to anyone, without any hesitation whatever. Read Less

We enjoyed our cruise on the Viking Longships---two actually because of low water problems in the river systems during our October sailing. We were suppose to start and finish on the Lofn but actually only finished on it. However, Viking handled the required ship change as smoothly as anyone could have dreamed. Except for having to pack and unpack a little more than desired and to have had a few more long bus rides I don't think we had any ill effects. In addition Viking gave us a free excursion because of the difficulties. The food and drink onboard were of high quality and the free wine service was generous and prompt. Our Cruise Director went with us from ship to ship so that we had some type of continuity throughout. Both crews were fantastic and I can't remember any complaints worth mentioning. This was our first river cruise and my wife and I both liked it. We had previously visited some of the towns and cities along the way but enjoyed all and found the excursions to all be worthwhile. We signed up for only a few of the 'extra fee' excursions as we thought the free ones were excellent. I would have liked more tome onboard just cruising along the river but I think that's the nature of river cruising , at least in Europe where one has to cope with so many locks and daytime stops. Entertainment on board was minimal but fine with some cultural insights thrown in through lectures od local entertainers. All in all, I liked (as did my wife) our first river cruise and I was especially pleased with the entire Viking treatment. Indeed, I might have rated this higher than 4 stars but have so little past river cruising experience that I felt like I should hold back a little. However, Viking impressed me so much that we are planning an ocean cruise with them for 2017 (by that time we will have been on 18 ocean cruises and I'll have the experience to more accurately rank them. Our 14 night cruise on two Viking Longships, the Vidar and the Lofn, was really nice. Despite the very low river levels that required us to first board a ship, the Vidar, that we hadn't booked and doing that 40 miles or more from Budapest and then having to be bussed half way through the cruise to pick up our originally scheduled ship, the Lofn, we still had a great time. Viking handled the required ship transfer without a hitch. We did have to repack and then unpack again (not fun) and one didn't see a whole lot in the bus rides but the ships were identical and both spanking brand new. Both crews were great and our Tour Guide and her assistant changed ships with us so that there was some sense of continuity. In addition Viking gave us a free paid tour (a value of ~$138). The food was very good and the wine pouring was frequent and generous at lunch and dinner. While the entertainment was not spectacular I don't think many people take these cruises for elaborate nightly entertainment. The piano music before and after dinner was very pleasant and after spending many days ashore touring I would fall asleep during any longer shows. Another thing that surprised me was that there were many free tours so that we only invested in a few extra cost trips. All in all, a great trip and I would readily cruise again with Viking. Indeed being a frequent ocean cruiser (17 and counting) I'm looking forward to taking one of Viking's ocean cruises (perhaps to the Baltic) within the next couple years. My mother in law chose this cruise, to take the whole family. We were concerned at first because of her age (mid 80s), but the crew took excellent care of us and especially of her. There were many ways the crew assisted her or made accommodation so that she could participate in outings. I personally enjoyed the many choices available at each stop, and also the choice to simply sit on deck and enjoy scenery. The crew were exemplary. I have done nothing but sing your praises since arriving home, and I hope to do it again very soon. The trick is to pace yourself at the same time that you push yourself: choose what interests you! On the same day, I had a "Mozart" experience in Vienna that was a peak life experience and my brother-in-law had a peak life experience watching the Lipizzaner stallions. Our family was amused that we were both excited and thrilled with our "bucket list" days which were so completely different from each other. In another town, our peak of the day was to have a coffee and pastry at a sidewalk cafe and simply people watch. Each day brings different possibilities, so pay attention and follow your feeling of the moment. Bring a couple of pairs of good walking shoes, and enjoy the many different ports of call, each with some treasure waiting for you to partake. Read Less

This was our first cruise of any kind and, overall, we were very happy. Because of low water conditions we were forced on two occasions to transit by bus, once to change vessels from Lofn to Vidar and once to hotel accomodation in Budapest. We found the guides on all shore excursions to be very knowledgable and quite entertaining. The crew of the Lofn was outstanding - service was excellent and very prompt, attentive and considerate. While the crew of the Vidar was good, there was a noticable drop off in service quality. The same can be said of the quality of the food - outstanding on the Lofn; materially less good on Vidar. All things considered, the arrangements for the transfer from Lofn to Vidar were handled very well. However, we were not happy with the hotel arrangements in Budapest. The hotel was located away from, and with no convenient access to, the city centre. Our luggage was misplaced. While a meal credit was provided for dinner in the hotel restaurant, the service was extraordinarily bad and we, along with several other guests from the cruise, eventually gave up and walked out. Other than the hotel bar, there were no other' dining' options. With luggage having to be made available in the hallway at 2 am and a 4 am departure for the airport, our stay in Budapest left us bored, hungry and exhausted. As a result of the foregoing, our ratings for the have been reduced from what would otherwise have been 'excellent' to 'average' to 'very good' in a number of categories. Read Less

Our cruise progressed from Amsterdam to Budapest with stops in Cologne, Nuremberg and Vienna. The entire trip was excellent. The time aboard ship was comfortable with relaxed elegance. We booked late and had the small stateroom which quite adequate in size and appointments with plenty of room for storage. Not much viewing from the water level window, but it encouraged us to explore the wonder common spaces such as the lounge and dining area. Ahh! The dining room! First and foremost is the staff!! Accommodating and friendly, there seemed nothing they could not do. If you had special dietary needs they accommodated with ease. Want chocolate ice cream (not on the menu)? Ask and it appeared. Just excellent. The special evenings with local entertainment and food were also fun ... especially sharing schnapps! The land tours and guides were great and very knowledgeable . We extended in Prague and were treated to an amazing day with a lovely women whom provided us with a tour of Tereazin and the work camps. Somber but excellent experience. there is no question that we will sail again. the hardest choice is which cruise...perhaps Russia! Read Less

My wife and I really enjoyed our Viking Grand European River Cruise. The crew, food, and accommodations were excellent. We did feel that the Viking organization could have been more forthright from the beginning of the cruise about the low water conditions on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers, and the probable consequences. Instead, it was more or less a surprise to most passengers. It was indeed fortunate that there was an identical Viking ship in Passau so that the east and west bound passengers could trade boats. Our new ship had to stop short of Budapest and we again were bussed to the city and only had about a half day to see the sights. Viking did their best to make up for the travel disruptions by providing concert tickets in Vienna to all interested passengers and a free sightseeing boat trip in Budapest. Read Less
