The entire April 3, 2019 Tulips and Windmills cruise on the Viking Mimir was flawless. We were fortunate. The weather was nice: cool but windy. The tulips were in full bloom. Timing for us could not have been better. From the shore excursions to the dining, all services were provided with grace and charm. Almost too much to fit into one week, but what wonderful memories. I was particularly charmed by the Belgian and Dutch citizens who were so pleasant. They wanted to share and show the love of their countries. I am Catholic and had the unexpected opportunity to attend daily Mass in Antwerp and Bruges. I didn't miss out on any part of the ship's tours because it so happened that Mass was offered in small chapels adjoining the large cathedrals in the town center at 11:00 A.M in both towns and the times coincided with the "free time" to shop or browse. Have another cruise with Viking already booked. I don't have to research shore excursions options. I need only to show up with good walking shoes on my feet! Read Less

We had never been to Europe and thought a Viking River Cruise would be the best way to see several countries. Viking has a great reputation and they didn't disappoint us. From start to finish, we were pampered and treated luxuriously the whole time. River levels were at an all-time low on the Danube, so we had to swap ships at the midpoint, but even that was handled with such excellence that we hardly noticed. We also did a pre-trip 2-night stay in Amsterdam. The hotel Viking chose for us couldn't have been in a better location. We could walk to absolutely everything! The guides they use for their excursions are always local and absolutely the BEST! The 2500+ pictures we took don't even do the trip justice. The ship overall, our rooms, the staff, the food, the excursions.....everything was A+!!! We didn't want it to end. We will definitely consider another Viking river cruise. Read Less

We chose this particular cruise because it was comprehensive and included wine growing regions. The food was fantastic and the service was excellent. The only glitch was the low water levels on the Rhine which necessitated us switching boats and missing one port. However, the cruise line made the switch as painless as possible- the water levels were beyond their control but they handled it flawlessly. All of the included shore excursions were excellent and the optional excursions we did were great fun. We particularly enjoyed the winery visit (Morwahld). Spending two days in Vienna was a bonus as it provided us the opportunity to go off on our own the first day without worrying about getting back to the ship before departure. We found that the food and service were very slightly better on the Mimir than the ship we moved to after our switch. Perhaps we’d been spoiled. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the tulips -- it turned out to be much more. We took the 2-day pre-extension and enjoyed every minute. The walking tour was different from the walking tour that we took after boarding the boat, so we got to see much more of Amsterdam and learn much more history. Of course, the museums were wonderful and we enjoyed both walking and riding the tram. After boarding, each place we stopped had a fascinating history, plus so much to see and enjoy. The crew was wonderful; the service was impeccable; activities were fun; excursions were interesting; the food was delicious; our accommodations were comfortable; the weather turned out to be beautiful -- and now I want to go back to Amsterdam! We made wonderful friends on the boat and are still in contact with some of them. I took about 3,000 photos -- so much beauty and history to record, it was difficult to put the camera down. Read Less

I would definitely take another Viking River Cruise. The staff was very friendly and the food was good (always cookies in the galley). Our accomodations were spacious (great bathroom and sitting room). They use the ship spaces very well for entertainment in the lounge as well as conveying ship information. The onboard ship discussions of the places we were sailing by on the river was wonderful. Due to river levels we had to change ships. The crew handled the change marvelously. We did not travel with children and there weren't any on our cruise. We went on many shore excursions and loved the winery tour, cheese tour and Melk Abbey. There were many small touches like fresh flowers in our room and common areas. I also enjoyed the warm towels and small drinks upon returning from excursions. We used the ships laundry service and the clothes came back the next day, clean, pressed and ready for the next adventure. My favorite part of the trip was docking in town and walking around after our included or extra excursions. To walk off the food and drink, there was a track on top of the ship. I highly recommend a river cruise on Viking. Read Less

We liked this cruise so much we booked two for next year! Viking takes care of everything--all you have to do is get to the airport in your home city. The pre-extension helped us shift into "vacation" mode. Our ship was beautiful. We especially enjoyed the "extra touches" such as fresh flowers in many places. The entertainment was a great combination of different musicians and types of music. The pace was relaxing yet full of many interesting places with the excursion guides telling stories to help us understand the local culture and history. When Viking takes care of the transfer off the ship to the airport, that definitely eliminates stress. The Program Director was a wealth of knowledge and clearly committed to passenger satisfaction. All staff were very friendly and many got to know us by name. One of the most relaxing and definitely the most stress-free vacation we've had. Read Less

After going on several ocean cruises this was on our list for a long time. We chose Viking after doing a lot of research and chose the Mimir departing Amsterdam on May 27th to try and catch the Tulips in bloom which we did. After the trip we both said that was the best trip we had ever been on. The Viking experience was great from the arrangement of air transportation to the excursions, food, entertainment and hospitality of the ships crew. Already looking to take another one on Viking. The Grand European cruise was all anyone could ask for. Experiencing the different cultures in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary as well as the scenic aspect and food was incredible. The excursions that Viking offered whether the included ones or the extra ones that are offered were excellent. Our Cruise Director Niki was fantastic. Will definitely sail with Viking again. We took the pre-cruise Amsterdam extension to explore our departure city and see area attractions. A pre-cruise extension also serves to help adjust to time differences and flights prior to boarding the cruise ship. A Viking host was available daily for consultation and recommended restaurants, city tours, and any services needed. The Hotel Movenpick was centrally located for walking tours and provided very good accommodations. All transfers were included along our itinerary and as always Viking was exceptional with every detail. All was as promised and expected. This was our second cruise on the Mimir. Our cabin was comfortable, on-board dining and service throughout the cruise was superb, and evening activities were interesting and informative. We selected both included and optional excursions that featured beautiful scenery, cultural traditions, museums, and everything from major war battles sites such as "Operation Market Garden" and Flanders Fields to an impressive collection of paintings by van Gogh in Arnhem. We chose Viking River Cruises because we had heard so many excellent things about them from previous customers. The date and cost of the cruise also fit into our plans. We have been on the larger cruise lines and liked them, but Viking is a totally different, positive experience and totally exceeded all expectations we had. The rooms were very nice, the heated floor in the bathroom was totally awesome, the amenities were top of the line and always replenished and on hand. The complimentary water provided in the rooms was also topped off sufficiently, sometimes more than once a day. Bottled water was provided as you disembarked the ship for excursions, as well as umbrellas when the weather was wet. Viking's manner of communication while on excursions, was nothing short of awesome -- they were called "quiet boxes" with earphones and each person had their own, which was charged in your room when not in use. The person leading the excursion would talk into their own quiet box and you could hear everything being said without being right next to the guide. The staff on our ship were beyond attentive and pleasant, the who while being professional. The food was geared to the town we were visiting and always appetizing and interesting. The towns and all the history were something I will always treasure and a great and unique experience. Read Less

Ports and shore excursions were just the right combination of activity, education and fun. We participated in all included tours and several optional tours. The staff always greeted us and often recognized us by name. We are two seniors on a honeymoon. We enjoyed dining with many different groups. We would go again. Travel to Europe, especially Germany was high on our "Bucket List". We researched several other "River Cruise" companies but chose Viking because of their itinerary, excursions and reputation. We were not disappointed because the beauty of each country and travelling along the Danube, Main and Rhine were fabulous. The sights along the Rhine with all the castles and vineyards were breath-taking. The staff was so friendly and personable and the food was absolutely decadent. We enjoyed great entertainment every evening with Nelly and Martin. The ship was beautifully designed and the cabins were very comfortable. We loved the French balcony as it provided a beautiful view with the floor to ceiling patio windows. The excursions were well organized and the guides were "locals" that were very knowledgeable and informative. My husband and I usually do not go to a destination that we have already done but, we both agree that we would repeat this trip again! The only thing we regret is that we ended in Amsterdam but did not extend our stay to spend time visiting this amazing city. We did not realize we would be leaving so early on our last day and we were not able to see Amsterdam at all. Overall, we must say it was one of the best vacations we ever did and the staff, accommodations, food (and drink!), places we visited through the shore excursions and beauty we saw was superb! Timing was good. Tour group sizes very good. Selection of places to dock and location of docking was excellent and close or in the towns. The crew were very friendly and helpful. Information sent beforehand was helpful. We organized our flights with Viking and asked for aisle seating. I got aisle but my friend who also asked for aisle was assigned an inside seat. For long flights that is not fun. I am not sure why the mix-up occurred and complained when I talked with someone after. It makes me concerned about future planning of seating. Our shore excursions were well organized with very knowledgeable tour guides who entertained us with unique historical facts presented in a very entertaining manner. Dining on the Mimir was over the top. Waiters and waitresses were polite , efficient and worked with a pleasant and happy manner. Food was excellent. Our cabin was well laid out and sufficiently roomy for our 15 day cruise. Daily room service was appreciated. Evening entertainment on board the ship was very good with musicians and local artists performing for us. We were anxious to see the beautiful landscapes along the Danube, the Rhine & Main River, and to visit all the cities on the tour, from Budapest to Amsterdam. A cruise with Viking was a relaxing and secure way to see Europe, as we learned on our first cruise last Fall, on the Viking ship Rolf, from Paris to Normandy. Our ship Mimir was as beautiful as we expected, and our only regret was that we hadn't booked a French Balcony room, as we had on the Rolf~the standard cabin we had on the Mimir was the same size, but seemed smaller with the smaller windows, with very limited views. Viking provided the opportunity for cultural & historical enrichment through their excellent guided tours & excursions along the way, which greatly added to our enjoyment. Embarkation & disembarkation was very smoothly and professionally done--so easy with the Viking representatives always looking out for their visitors! While on board, we were again impressed with the friendly and efficient crew & excellent service, and the quality of the food & entertainment offered. We also enjoyed the post-excursion extension in Amsterdam, which, again, had the Viking oversight and quality amenities. Read Less

The optional excursions I selected were all great. I was particularly looking forward to the Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna, and it lived up to my expectations. The included tours were all well done by local guides. They were mostly walking tours, and they always had a group for those of us that moved a bit slower than the others. The program director was great fun and very informative. The food was great and we loved that it was inspired by the local cuisine. We loved the shore tours mostly. The cruise through the Wachau Valley was simply amazing. Our favorite village was the tour to Rothenburg--a charming medieval city on a hill with a wall still surrounding it. We only wished we had more time in each town and village we visited. The people in every country were extremely friendly. Perhaps the most moving was the special tour in Nuremberg. While distressing, it was very important to see what happened in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Loved traveling with our hotel! We would do it again in a minute...in fact we will. Read Less

We chose the longest cruise to make the most of the fact that we were already there, plus we chose the 3 day extension on both ends...3 days prior in Amsterdam and 3 days post cruise in Budapest. Best thing we could have done! I had done extensive research before we went so we knew just what we wanted to do in Amsterdam and also in Budapest. All the 15 or so excursions in each city we visited were included in the price of the cruise. A bus picked us up at the Apollo Hotel in Amsterdam and took us right to where the Viking Mimir was docked. We were thrilled at the sight of this beautiful, sleek, longship. We boarded and everything from the moment we stepped onto the ship until the very moment we stepped off the ship, went as smoothly as possible. Far above our expectations! The crew is courteous, really on the ball, attends to your every possible whim and foresees possible problems before they arise, such as handing out red Viking umbrellas on rainy mornings along with a water bottle. Upon returning to the ship, they are right there to take your umbrella and give you a warm lemon-flavored white cloth to refresh yourself. Caitlyn, our Program Director was most efficient, personable and just plain nice. The included excursions were interesting with relatively good guides with groups of about 20 people. The dining experience was great...wonderful food, great breakfasts, and great waiters. K'senjia was the Maitre'd and always greeted you with a smile. The Captain managed to get us through even when the river levels were low and it all went as planned with no changing of ships, for which we were all grateful! I would highly recommend a Viking River cruise to anyone who wants a truly serene, relaxing and peaceful vacation, filled with the most gorgeous scenery, along with narration by our Program Director, with first class service all the way. We just loved every minute! Read Less

We had been considering 15 day The Grand European Tour Viking River Cruise for a long time, and we finally decided to indulge ourselves. We were on the May 26 - June 9, 2017, cruise. This was an outstanding experience, and one that far exceeded our expectations in almost every way! First, we opted for Viking to make our travel arrangements, which included our transfers between airport and ship. Not only did they welcome us in the arrivals hall in Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) at the beginning of our journey, they also had a representative stay with us all the way until we arrived at the security checkpoint when we departed from the Budapest airport. We opted for the Veranda Stateroom (upper deck) because we wanted a little more room (205 sq. feet plus balcony) versus the French Balcony Stateroom (135 sq. feet). We are very happy with our decision. Although we really did not use the balcony very much, we very much appreciated the extra space! Rey, our cabin attendant was superb! We don't know how he always seemed to know the moment when we left our cabin, and when we came back from breakfast, he had already been in to clean the room. He frequently asked if there was anything else we needed or wanted, and reminded us that he was there to do whatever he could to make our vacation enjoyable. That attitude was prevalent among ALL the staff! Every staff member consistently provided exceptional service, and made us feel so welcomed and valued as customers. The front desk staff was always friendly, efficient, and very helpful. The maitre d' Ksenjia always handed each of us a bottle of water to take along as we left the ship each day for our excursions, and she then offered us a warm welcome and a smile when we returned. She made sure the food service operation went smoothly, which it did! Our waitstaff Mae, Barbara, Dessi, and Michael were all fantastic, as were the bartenders in the lounge: Tamas and Christian! Chef (Gabor) was a master at his profession, provided a varied menu of expertly prepared meals, including a number of regional specialties. It was a real treat to be able to visit the galley after dinner one night and hear the chef explain the culinary operation of the ship. Each day during lunch time and again after dinner, we enjoyed going to the lounge and listening to musicians George and Magdalena. Program Director Barry did a great job of managing all the onboard activities, as well as the daily excursions. The ship was absolutely beautiful, was spotlessly clean, and was well-maintained. We went on all of the included excursions. It is difficult to say which was best, because they were all excellent. If I had to choose, I would say that the tour of Marksburg Castle in Braubach, Germany, and the visit to the windmills at Kinderdijk were personal favorites. The guides were all friendly and knowledgeable. The only thing lacking, in my opinion, was some sort of fitness room. It would have to be very small, but even a room with a couple of stationary bikes or treadmills would have been appreciated. The sundeck does have a walking track, but the sundeck was closed for five days because of the need to be able to lower the railings and equipment on that deck so that we could pass under some of the many bridges on the rivers. A small fitness room would be a welcome addition, especially for those times when the walking track is not available. I could go on and on. Suffice it to say that, based on this very positive experience, we hope to take more cruises on Viking in the future. Our next adventure may be on one of their ocean cruises! Read Less

The fifteen(15) day Grand European Tour exceeded our expectations! The ship was beautiful and extremely accommodating. Our veranda stateroom was very nice and had everything we needed to be comfortable while enjoying the beautiful scenery as we sailed the rivers. However, the most amazing part of the cruise was the cuisine. Chef Jakub and his staff presented wonderful meals that depicted the culture and essence of the people we visited. We had the opportunity to join Chef on a visit to Vienna's famous Naschmarket and it was a dream come true. We walked through the market tasting the delicious wines, cheeses and other delicacies as Chef Jakub explained to us the awesome qualities of the white asparagus he intended to prepare for dinner. What an unbelievable adventure! Another outstanding aspect of the trip was how well Caitlyn and her team organized the daily tours, entertainment and activities. Not only were the lectures educational but they were entertaining and chalked full of attention getting antics. I learned more about this part of the world in fifteen(15) days than I had previously learned my entire life. The excursions, entertainment and lectures were top of the line! Finally, the service from the entire crew was incredible! My husband and I felt as though we were royalty being catered to throughout the trip. We choose this one as our first River Cruise as we had heard it was a good introduction into the world of River Cruising. It also offered a variety of destinations. We experienced some very unusual things on this cruise which was not the norm and saw different ports than was on our itinerary. The ship had a broken part and therefore, we had to go slower on the river and often did not make the right destination and half way thru we had to go into dry dock and get it repaired which was gave us another new destination. We also, had locks that broke down and put our timing off. Although, we had little things the crew and staff was excellent and communicated very well with all of us on board. We upgraded to the Veranda SuiteAA for the extra room. Extra room was nice as well as daily replenished wine, beer, and soft drinks and complimentary laundry service. The ports and shore excursion choices / options were very good. The only issue we had was the inconsistency of the guides ( which in general are not Viking, but outside vendors). We love cruising so we can see many places, but stay in just one "hotel." We found ocean cruises to be rather hectic with crowded shows and activities on board to keep you busy when you just want to relax, and too much time where the view is just the ocean. This river cruise had exactly what WE were looking for. Comfortable, relaxing, always a lovely view, staff were friendly and helpful, the excursions were well-planned and interesting, food was plentiful and delicious and always plenty of wine flowing (so you always slept well! hahaha) There were some interesting activities and talks on the ship, even a glass blower! If you wanted to stay in your cabin, you could also hear the talks over your TV which was very convenient. Of course, it would have been fabulous to have 3-4 days at many of the stops, but Viking did a nice job of planning many small village excursions as well as the larger city excursions. The staff could not have been nicer, from the room steward to the dining staff... everyone felt like family by the time the cruise ended. We would love to take another river cruise soon. Read Less
