Our friends were already booked on it and told us Viking cruises are wonderful. WE looked forward to seeing Europe from the water perspective as well. First cruise for us and overall, our experience was very good. Food was excellent. Service also was top rate. Thought some ports could have used extra time. Excursions were on the whole quite good. Very informative guides. Would have liked more opportunities to bike in some of these ports. Also, would have been nice to have a small gym with weights available. WEights and perhaps an exercise bike and stair stepper. My husband and I are in our early 50's and I realize the average age of your passengers may be older. I do think Viking is starting to attract a younger adult crowd though and making some accomodations to satisfy that age demographic would be nice. Would definitely travel with Viking again though. My brother chose this cruise for his 70th birthday trip as he had wanted to try a river cruise.Embarkation was very slick, airport pick up and transfer vehicle were on point.The dining experience was excellent as were the staff in the dining room and bar area,in fact all of the Viking Modi staff are exemplary and a credit to the company. The tours are very well organised and timings are a good blend of very knowledgeable local tour guides and time to explore alone before sailing on. Entertainment was a little limited, the shake up duo were talented but for the most part had the same play list every night with a few evenings exceptions. I am pretty sure they ramped up the sound in the lounge area a couple of nights in which made conversation impossible therefore the lounge was invariably deserted by 10pm. A couple of nights we had entertainment from locals, opera in Vienna, Hungarian folk music etc which was very enjoyable. Our main disappointment was that the sun deck was closed for 5 days of the trip an occurance which was not clearly documented anywhere in the brochure or mentioned at the time of booking by our travel agent (if TA was even aware of the fact), this meant that outside space was limited to a small area at the bow of the ship and the two side balconies, speaking for my husband and myself we were going stir crazy as my husband likes to walk the deck and take photographs,the walking track,small putting area and deck quoits could not be used. The majority of our sailing companions were very well travelled and educated people with the exception of a few who were avoided sometime with difficulty as escape routes were few. Read Less

We chose this cruise to travel the Danube and Rhine rivers without packing and unpacking. Everything worked out well and we saw the many wonderful sights and learned the history of the medieval world. We thought we would step off the ship into the many medieval towns along this route, but found that we weren't always docked by the towns on the itinerary and were bused in to the town. That wasn't a problem, but not what we expected. The itinerary didn't list times in the ports so we were disappointed that some days were much shorter then we expected. For instance, the itinerary listed two days in Vienna, but we didn't arrive until the evening on the 1st day so we really only had one day. There were times where we were dropped off for an excursion before we arrived in town while the ship went along the river without us. I was a little uncomfortable not knowing exactly where the ship would be docked in case we wanted to find our way back to the ship on our own. We didn't experience any problems with this as we booked excursions through Viking and were kept very busy. All that said, we had a wonderful trip. The lectures were informative and the excursions were always what we had hoped for with great guides and good meals when included. We felt that we had learned a lot and had a great introduction to the palaces, churches and castles along the Danube, Main and Rhine. The staff on the ship were always warm and friendly and ready to answer any questions that we might have. The meals were good with a couple of meals exceptional. Read Less

We choose this cruise because Viking had such good reviews and we liked all the ports. We bought the silver spirits package and we were glad we did as the wine choices on the regular menu were few. Food was very good in general. There was a buffet at breakfast but you could also order off the menu. We rarely ate lunch on the ship as we were mostly out on tours. We loved dining al fresco at the bow but menu was more limited there. Ports were wonderful, we loved Rothenberg au de Rainer.. We took several “paid” tours and all were good. Staff was great especially the main bartender. My only complaint was constantly having to sign for the drinks. A minor irritant. Lots of friendly people and many Europeans on this cruise. Weather was generally good. We would like to try a Viking ocean cruise next trip. Read Less

Transfers were excellent. * I did not drink wine or soft drink except for water, which is fine with me. However, we did not like dinner food, main courses, most of the time. Breakfasts were great. * We could not invite any family members and friends because they did not like the idea of paying for full price a year in advance, or when booking. * We like the idea of switching to different groups, which given cruisers a chance to get to know people from different countries. Sometimes it might turn out that people are from you home town/ state. * We are physically active, unfortunately walking desk was closed due to the weather. Had taken this cruise 12 years ago and thought my companions would enjoy. The ship was well laid out and quite luxurious. Crew was absolutely wonderful, especially the program director known as Joey. Food was very good. I cannot give cruise 5 stars because of some ill-chosen ports. Miltenberg and Bamberg were small and not interesting enough to justfy the hours we had to stay there. Rudesheim, Mainz, etc would be better choices. Bishop's Palace in Würzburg was overcrowded and guide told most of us far more than we wanted to know about the decor. I recommend this be an optional tour. Rothenburg was optional and the opposite would be better in my opinion. Another complaint is lack of time in some of the more interesting ports such as Budapest and Nurnberg. I did love having full days on Vienna. If you like river cruising Viking is an excellent choice. They train their staff well and are attentive to guests. There is freedom to relax aboard if that suits you. In some ports it was possible to avoid the tours and explore on one's own. Read Less

First time river cruisers and chose this one for the full Grand European Cruise experience. First and foremost, the Viking Staff were absolutely outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure the passengers were always treated as top priority throughout the entire voyage. We also chose the late April sailing so we could enjoy the tulips in full bloom and they were definitely showing their colors. A beautiful sight. The trade off for going on this cruise in the Springtime is having cooler temperatures. They were so cool that we had days with sleet and hail while in Amsterdam. The local people agreed the temperatures were extremely cold for the time of year when we were there. The only thing preventing a top mark for the overall rating, is the large amount of idle time for passengers. Morning walking tours were routine in most cities, but once they were complete, the remainder of the day is pretty much up to the individual passenger. There are add-on excursions that can be taken at additional expense, but they would help to fill up the day. This type of cruise is not suitable for children and I would strongly recommend parents not bring them on a river cruise. They might be extremely bored. Read Less

Very pleasant trip...the longship MODI is new this year and the facilities were in great condition. Service in the dining room was very good with a very cheerful and smiling Philipina crew...ladies servicing the rooms were also smiled!..We had some very excellent tour guides and learned European history as a result. What was disappointing was the inadequate time spent in Budapest and Vienna..Both cities are beautiful and dynamic, and Viking does them a disservice by spending such a meager time in these cities. Spend your own money and go 3 to 4 days earlier to Budapest, stay on the Pest side and tour the city on your own. Viking could have coordinated things better so that we could have seen the inside of the Mathias Church and perhaps gone for an organ recital at St Stephens cathedral, and visited the famous synagogue, but if you did JUST their cruise you would have missed all this. We stayed at the Hilton in the West End area and used the metro, trolley and buses to get around and had a much better feeling for this beautiful city. Viking needs to improve this cruise instead of just listing the cities/towns visited and making claims to all their beauty, especially Vienna and Budapest, while not providing adequate time in these cities. We loved the stops at the small towns where a day was enough time to see them. A day was certainly not sufficient for Vienna and Budapest; 2 hours for the latter!! Lastly, we could have skipped Bratislava...poor guide and dense fog. The time would have been better spent in one of the big cities. Read Less

We chose to cruise in October to celebrate my birthday. We had hoped for good weather but Mother Nature did not co-operate. All the days but one were cold, rainy and overcast. Of course Viking had no control over the weather. We chose the 2 day extension in Amsterdam and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The hotel was very nice and we had a great tour of the city. The cruise started off with a glitch as the Viking Modi had run aground on her previous voyage and could not reach Amsterdam in time to pick up the passengers so we were bused to the ship. We were aware that there had been many problems with low water levels in the European rivers last year but decided to go on this cruise anyway. We were the first ship to make in all the way through without changing ships midway through the trip. Previously we had cruised on many larger ocean going ships. So this was a definite new experience for us. One of the positives is that you get to know the crew and fellow passengers very well. After the first few days of the trip my favorite waitress knew what I liked for breakfast and had it ordered before I sat down. The crew were all very attentive. We liked the open seating as it gave us a chance to meet many new friends. Compared to other cruises, the food was just OK. The entertainment was only so-so, mostly just piano music. We really prefer the entertainment on the larger ships. The excursions that were included were very nice, we learned a lot about the history of each of the ports. I highly recommend the optional excursion to Rothenburg, it was amazing. Another inconvenience we encountered was the closing of one of the bridges that forced us to pass Vienna and then get bused back into town. Viking did make up for it by paying for our admission to the symphony which was originally an optional tour that was not included. I will say that Viking always tried to please the passengers by making adjustments to the excursions and other arrangements. The last port was Budapest and I would suggest staying up when you arrive later in the evening to see the beautiful lights of the city. Very well done! I also personally missed not having a place to workout. There was a track available on the top deck, but it was cold and many days it was closed. Actually I may have been one of only a few passengers that missed a workout area as most of the passengers were older. We enjoyed the experience but will probably go back to ocean cruising. You can only visit so many churches and castles. Read Less

In summary, anything on-board the actual cruise (and tours) were excellent but the "corporate" side of Viking was not. First the good (read that as the ship-board and tour part of our cruise experience): The itinerary, the ship, the cabin, the food, and particularly our Cruise Director (Marek Snelly) were wonderful. The land tours were well-organized and thorough. The first 3 nights of dinners were fabulous and then just very good thereafter. Because of water levels we had to transfer ships from the Skirnir to the Modi to get to Nuremburg. I know what you are thinking. This review started off as a MODI review so what's this stuff about the SKIRNIR? (See the "bad" comments) The Skirnir and Modi are identical. The entire ship is very well planned and efficient. We are used to Ocean Cruising (having taken 19 cruises on Princess alone) so we are accustomed to much larger (232 sq ft) cabins than the Skirnir/Modi's 180 sq ft. But Viking's are so well designed that, other than the amount of space at the foot of the bed, it actually seemed bigger and more usable. The closet doors have automatic lighting when you open them and are "soft" closing. The toilet seat is also soft closing (ladies you will love that) and the bathroom has a floor level string light for making night time trips to it safe. The shower is longer, skinnier, and somewhat trapezoidal in shape and has a shower wand ... features that are far better than what we have been accustomed to on most ocean liners. Even the built in refridgerator seems larger. The in-cabin safe is wonderful. Our balcony was a bit skinnier in depth than those we have had on ocean liners but very usable. The public areas of Viking are also smaller but very efficient. The main dining room has floor to ceiling windows on both sides and tables for 6 to a dozen. You can sit anywhere but we found that, like us, most people ended up making new friends and sitting with the same group night after night. The wait staff is assigned by table areas so you get to know them, and them you, and what you like or don't like. Our server on the Modi was particularly good. The styling of the Skirnir/Modi is "Scandinavian Design" at its optimum and best ... clean, simple, and elegantly frugal on space. The first 3 night's dinners were to die for. Then they went from being fabulous to just being very good. The one thing they could do to really improve them is to make sure that the hot foods are served hot. I got tired of sending things back and just put up with it. My wife had never had better Veal Medallions. Their salmon is always wonderful. But the "Reduction" Beef Wellington is unrecognizable as a Beef Wellington and I just sent it back and ordered a salmon. But when you see how SMALL their kitchen is you will be surprised that they can make meals for 20 let alone 190 ! All of the people on-board the Viking were very polite and wanting to do literally anything to please. This far exceeded anything we have witnessed on over 25 ocean cruises. But our Cruise Director "Marek" was particularly exceptional. There are no words to describe just how incredible a job he did. And ALL of them knew our names within one day !!! Now for the bad: Let me preface my comments by telling you that I am a dinosaur ... coming from both my upbringing as well as 34 years at a Fortune 10 Company where ETHICS, telling the TRUTH, and FOLLOWUP were demanded and key to your business and of primary measure of you as a person. Candidly, Viking (CORPORATE ONLY) falls so far short in this area it is disgusting. When I booked the cruise, I made sure our booking agent knew how important it was for us not to be seated in the back of a large plane and that this was key to our booking. He assured me that the people at Viking that booked the flights could/would accommodate us. They did not. And help ended the moment he had my charge account number. Above our repeated requests over a 4 week period we were assigned seats in the second to the last row of a 747's middle 4 section (3-4-3 layout)! And everytime I pleaded for reassignment I was hit with something they call "codeshare". Funny but brand new passengers on the flights could buy upgrades ... which I tried to do ... but was told by Viking, Delta, and KLM that it was not possible. In my life I was led to believe that there is a word that describes not being allowed to buy something that others can: DESCRIMINATION. With determination I literally "sat" on the airline websites so as to find a way, albeit at last minute on the 10 hour flight from LAX to Amsterdam segment to be able to swap seats. I was able to purchase "Economy Plus" seats on KLM for the return flight. But it turns out that Viking was only charged $625 round-trip for each of us to fly round trip from Los Angeles! $625??? Have you ever tried to buy a round trip economy ticket to Europe? It's at least $1500-$2000. So I guess that's why you should expect to have the worst seats possible when you book through Viking. You are now forewarned. We were greeted at the Budapest airport by Viking-assigned personnel (on-ship people as far as I was concerned and excellent) and transferred in a lovely Mercedes bus to the dock ... only to find out that we would be on the Skirnir, not the Modi! The river levels near Nuremburg were too low so we had to re-pack our clothes and be bused to the next port, just to be bused back to Nuremburg for the land tour of that port. And at the end of our cruise we docked in Rotterdam, not Amsterdam! It turned out that Viking corporate was not aware that "Sail Amsterdam" (an every-5-year-celebration) did not allow them to do it ... and that this was a "surprise"! What? Viking knew about it for at least 4 years and 11 months and it was a surprise??? They are either brain dead or lying. I think they lied. The point that I am trying to make is that if someone tries to hide things that are out of their control (like the Danube River level), how comfortable are you with what they will do in explaining things that are under their control? We were told when I booked the cruise that we were buying the very last cabin on the ship. Funny, but I talked with at least 4 other couples on our cruise that were told the same exact thing. Bottom line I don't think the word "honesty" is in Viking corporate's vocabulary. I also must say that one of the main reasons for taking a cruise is to only unpack and re-pack once. While this was caused by something outside of Viking's controls, it makes me seriously question ever doing another river cruise Summarizing: Everything about the cruise itself was wonderful BUT make sure you book Viking with your eyes open. I suggest you obtain trip insurance but not from Viking. I used Squaremouth, fyi, and you should expect to pay about 5% of your total cruise/airline/hotel costs to get a rough idea of what reasonable trip insurance should cost. And if you use frequent flier miles to book your flights, understand that travel insurance does not cover that ... as you didn't "pay" anything for it. But what if you used frequent flier miles and Viking cancelled the cruise ... what would you do? I guess I should be very happy. Many cruises by Viking were cancelled as well as by other carriers. Many, as ours, had bus detours. But don't you expect your cruise company to be "up front" and "forthright" in how they deal with these things? It would have been SO simple for Viking just to tell everybody, up front, that it changing ships was a real probability. I would have accepted that. But even Viking's website never acknowledged that our cruise was ... or ever would be ... affected. Read Less

The itinerary was excellent but the excursions often entailed walking 3 to 5 miles every day. I came home exhausted and am just now recovering a week plus later. The staff was helpful and well organized. The room while small was comfortable. But the reason I will never take another Viking cruise was that the food was mostly awful despite beer and wine. Good bread, good cookies, cappacinno machine always available. The crime brûlée was often burned and tasted odd. The chef as obviously not a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu. I survived mostly on baked chicken, fruit and salad. Everyone I talked to thought the food was awful as well. Did a Windstar last year and the food was excellent as well as the ship itself and various tours...came back feeling rested despite daily activities. Getting on or off the cruise was easy. Despite business class, only one leg of 3 legged return could be qualified as business class in my opinion. Read Less

Just finished one half of a Viking cruise that was abbreviated due to low water conditions. What was supposed to be 14 days cruising turned into 7 days on the rivers and 7 days on a bus. We booked this trip because it didn't entail riding a bus. The staff did a terrific job patching together the balance of the trip by arranging hotels and tours for 140 people. I have to blame management for not having the ability to provide another ship on the other side of the low water location for us to transfer to as they'd done on several other cruises recently. This was our first river cruise and probably the last. They did offer a partial refund as well as a discount on a future cruise with them if we chose to take it. Read Less

Just returned from 14-day Amsterdam to Budapest with 3-day Prague extension. I've done a lot of cruising, so was really looking forward to Viking's "superior" experience, and was really disappointed. The ships' crews were great. FYI, if you're on the Modi or Skirnir, there's a broken lock on the Main, and they'll give you 48 hours notice on an "unfortunately" announcement about switching ships (we docked at Nuremberg, toured, and were bused 3 hours to Regensburg, where we boarded the Modi with a new crew, same room, etc.). Transfer was handled smoothly, but they've been doing this since lock broke on June 5th - they should be more up front about it. Before I booked the 3-day Prague extension, I read that Viking promised train transfer, but used people. When I booked, I was assured we would transfer by train. Not true - was a 9 hour coach ride, which the onboard guide told me they'd been doing for 5 years. Also - that's your whole first day. We got in at 5 p.m. and were exhausted. Hotel about 2 mi out of old town Prague, so long walk. For what we paid for that extension ($699 per person), I could have put us on train for the 2.5 hr ride, and a closer hotel, at half the price tag. Again, my main gripe is the build-in dishonesty about the company. The stops on this itinerary were all great, and local guides were usually pretty good. Service on Skirnir was mediocre, but food was great. When we switched to Modi, service was excellent, but food was mediocre and we started skipping meals. Do not use their add-on "flight concierge" service. We paid for it, to get window/seats together, and to avoid the east coast airports. Flights changed 7 or 8 times (airlines and/or connecting cities). When I went to check in, I had to pay Delta and additional $54 for a window seat because flight concierge completely doesn't keep up on your reservation and preferences once they make the original booking. Not worth it. Last complaint is about the almost daily reminders from our tour director that we could tip extra for excellent service. We pre-paid the $20/day per person gratuities so we didn't have to worry about it. But the daily hustling and reminders from Wez were tacky and uncomfortable. I thought that was really unprofessional for a supposed "luxury" company. We know we can tip extra for great help (and we did) - but the daily harangues were off-putting. My sense is that regardless of what Viking promises, all these river cruises are basically the same level of service/food/experience. Go with a more economical line, and be wary of extensions. I chose Viking for the Grand European River Tour (14 day Amsterdam to Budapest) because I thought it was top of the line as per their ads on TV. It was to be the trip of a life time. As a retiree on a limited budget and with limited mobility ( I use a walker) I knew this was to be my last hoorah, it was now or never. I dreamed of this trip for several years. It was expensive but I was sure it would be well worth it. However! due to the extreme heat & drought, the water levels were extremely low & we were unable to travel on the water for the whole trip. The staff was constantly ducking, bobbing & weaving as to what the next step would be though I am sure it was all well planned out ahead of time. They knew early on that the low water levels were going to make sailing difficult. We were put on hot uncomfortable motor coaches for 3 hour jaunts to several different cities. At some points, the original port of call was bypassed entirely and excursions cancelled. When we were actually in the water on the Rhine, we went through at least 68 locks, bumping & banging our way through. The top deck was not accessible for half of the trip. We were moored in inaccessible & not very picturesque sites to the city . . . not at all as advertised & seen in the ads! . . . & had to be bussed, yet again, to the city center. We had to change boats 3 different times (the packing & unpacking added to the other inconveniences). This was NOT at all what we had paid for & expected. It was NOT the leisurely relaxing trip we wanted. It was exhausting & frustrating. The trip should have been cancelled from the get go. The food quality was mediocre with not too many options. The boat staff was excellent nevertheless. Overall not a "referrable moment" & I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, especially since their only response to our feedback thus far has been to offer a discount on a future cruise. We are writing this review to express our dissatisfaction with our recent Grand European Tour “river cruise". On July 30, three days prior to beginning our journey, we received notification that we would embark on the Viking Skirnir in Amsterdam, rather than Modi due to low river levels. On Aug. 3, at 9:20 p.m., we received notification that our cruise would not sail as described when we booked it, and the Skirnir was not able to make it to Amsterdam. We were not given the choice to cancel, and frankly, it would have been too late, as we had already left for Amsterdam to begin our 3 day extension. While understanding that Viking has no control over the weather, we cannot be convinced that the company knew nothing of the drought affecting the rivers we were to sail months in advance of our trip. We were told by locals in every city on the cruise that there had been no significant rainfall since May. This fact should have been communicated to the travelers who paid well in advance for a river cruise that was almost certain not to happen as advertised! We should have been given the option to: 1. accept the situation and continue our trip 2. apply the amount to a future cruise when the conditions were favorable for actually cruising the rivers as advertised, or 3. receive a full refund. We believe Viking was deceptive by not fully disclosing this information long prior to the day we already began our travels! The information we received once at the hotel (Hyatt Regency, Amsterdam) was remarkably inconsistent and the Viking representatives were ill-informed. We were told to attend a meeting on Aug. 5 at 6:30 for a briefing about the changes, only to find halfway through the meeting it was for a different ship with the same itinerary. We were not the only Modi people there, so we know the information was miscommunicated to others, as well. We were told our meeting was the following day. When we asked the Viking representatives the following morning about the time of the meeting, we were told it had been canceled. Later that night, we received correspondence in our room detailing the next day’s events, luggage pickup, etc. No mention of our Kinderdijk optional excursion, just a group number of the bus we were to board. Next morning we found out there HAD BEEN a meeting, and we missed some important details. The ineffectiveness of the representatives at that hotel was shameful! As it stood, we were bussed 1.5 hours to Kinderdijk, (misinformation caused us to be in the wrong group for the optional barge tour and we missed it), then 3 hours to Cologne, missing the entire river cruise on the Rhine between these cities. We sailed on the Skirnir for a while, but other than in Cologne, didn’t dock in cities where we could disembark and experience the ports as advertised. We purchased a suite with balcony, only to have the incredibly disappointing view of ugly harbors, recycling stations, and industrial holding areas! Not what we paid for! In addition to this, our ship often dropped us off and then left for another port to dock, so we spent a lot of time being bussed from ship to city to new port (generally ugly, sometimes sandwiched between ships so our view was a mirror image of our own balcony). We were told this was necessary because the ship had to make up for time lost in the never-ending series of locks, which took forever to traverse because of the water levels. This unfortunately cut into the amount of time we spent in the cities (which were all wonderful, by the way, and guides were overall very good). We really could have done without the almost unbearably boring restaurants we visited as a group with our lunch vouchers. There were so many other restaurants and cafes we would have enjoyed exploring. Instead, we were coerced into eating predetermined meals of, frankly, unappealing dishes, with no menu options, prepared in huge quantities and served by wait staff who clearly had no use for Viking and their vouchers! Our top deck was inaccessible for the entire time we spent on the Rhine. I expected a bit of this, but the entire river?? After Nuremburg, we were told we would be bussed clear out to Passau, by-passing Regensburg. This meant if anyone wanted to see this city, it would again require a 2-hour each-way bus trip. Honestly, if we had wanted to take a bus tour through the region, we could have saved ourselves a small fortune and just booked one. When we boarded the Viking Modi in Passau, I asked if the rest of the trip would go as planned, and was delighted to hear a definite affirmative from the desk representative! Things were looking up, and the cruise proceeded down the Danube with sundeck open and beautiful weather, stopping in ports with a view (except when we were double and triple tied off other ships, and were unable to use our balconies or open our blinds) and had access to the cities, just as we had expected for the entire cruise. It was quite lovely at this point! But then the rumor mill kicked in, and stories of other cruisers being bussed to and from Budapest filtered through the proverbial grapevine. Still, the crew said nothing, alluded to nothing, admitted nothing - until they had to the day before we were supposed to sail. So our trip would end with another 3.5 hour bus ride into Budapest…but the good news, according to the crew, was we would be docked on the Hermod at the Chain Bridge, at the very foot and center of the city! So great for exploring. Except that didn’t happen – we were docked two bridges up-river, where only taxis could transport the adventurous. There was no advantage to being on the ship, which was stifling inside. We were told that out of NINE ships stuck in Vienna, the Modi passengers were the only ones who would get to go to a ship. Woohoo. We would have preferred being put up in a hotel (5 stars, as we heard from other Viking travelers) at that point. At least we would have been in the city center. In a nutshell, this was not the trip we booked, not the trip that was advertised, and certainly not the trip we paid for. And nearly everyone onboard agreed. I will be sending this letter to those who provided their email addresses, and we will be expecting compensation for what was clearly a misrepresentation of what we could expect. A refund commensurate with our true experience may convince some to book another cruise with Viking…maybe. This episode has left many with a very bad taste in their mouths. We, ourselves acknowledge that if not for the Mediterranean Odyssey ocean cruise we took with Viking in 2017, we would turn our backs and look for another luxury cruise company. There are certainly many to choose from. That said, we hope that Viking will uphold their reputation and do what is right by their guests. They have offered a 50% voucher on the NEXT trip. We are asking for a 50% refund on this trip, not a voucher for the next, since for many there will be no “next”. Read Less

This was our first Viking river cruise and our last Viking river cruise. We have done over 10 European river cruises in the past, and decided to try Viking. We were very disappointed. First, we were given a SICK ship. The previous cruise had a number of sick people on it and although Viking claimed they sterilized the boat, about 40 people on our cruise became ill. Viking tried to play it down, but many of their crew were sick also. They treated everyone who was ill terribly. We asked about a doctor, and they stated we could get one, but we would have to [pay for it. Grand Circle River Cruises had a similar (but smaller) situation on one of our past cruises and they provided a doctor at each port for their crew and the passengers. The Viking passengers even formed a committee to contact the main company, but to no avail. I will admit the ship was new and very nice, but this was a Christmas Cruise: the ship was poorly decorated and there was nothing Christmas about it. I have been on many Christmas Cruises and this was the first time I didn't feel like Christmas. Next, the service and food were poor and below what we have had on other cruise lines. Other passengers complained also. I understand that, due to the virus, they were working on a short staff, but service was still a problem even after. I complained many times. I expected the food to be better, but we have had better food on all other river cruises. Finally, the Concierge was terrible. She had never been to Prague, our final destination, and we asked her to book a specific dinner concert. She did, but when we got there, it was closed and wouldn't be opened until the next night. We have been on 70+ ocean cruises and decided to try a river cruise due to the ports of call and the positive reports we had from friends on their Viking experience. Maybe we didn't do enough homework, but this trip was a total disappointment. We booked the Explorer Suite for the Passages to Eastern Europe cruise (It was a special occasion). We also booked our business class air with Viking. Viking did an excellent job communicating before and during the trip. We were impressed with their detail and excellent information. -Transfers: We had private transfers because we were in the Explorer Suite. They were timely and professional. -Budapest Hotel: There were many people checking in at the same time at the Bucharest Intercontinental. It was quite disorganized. We waited in line for a long time and were finally assigned a room. It was in a bad location and even though we offered to pay an upgrade for a "river view" room, we were told there were none available. The hotel was very nice, in a great location, and the breakfast was the best of any during the entire trip. It was a great beginning and then we boarded to boat. -Suite: The Explorer Suite was disappointing in that it was so noisy (it sits above the engines) we couldn't leave the windows open and there was terrible vibration whenever the boat was moving. The amenities were nice including having laundry done within a day and very neatly folded and returned. While room service for breakfast was included, there really is no place to eat except to lean over the little table. We knew the rooms are not comparable to ocean liners, but we thought that 445 square feet would make for a comfortable experience. The suite is long and narrow and not very easy to maneuver.... though I know it is quite large in comparison to the regular cabins on Viking Long Ships. -Food: I don't know if it was because of where we were sailing or the chef, but the food was poor to satisfactory. There was nothing good --not even the local specials. We found the dining room service to be just OK-- nothing special-- nor did they attempt to be accommodating. The bar tenders were great! Excursions: Our bad... we did not expect to have such long bus trips. Several days included being on the bus from 8:30 am until 7:00 pm. The busses were cramped and not comfortable. The local guides were excellent; the Viking guides were not. Most cities were too far away to go and explore on your own. We should have done better research. We included the post-cruise extension to Transylvania. We spent almost the entire 3 days on a bus, arriving late in the evening to the hotels. Enrichment: The local performers and lecturers were mediocre at best. Fellow Passengers: Maybe this was unusual, but this boat was filled with the most unfriendly people we have experienced. There was little laughter or conversation. People were pushy getting to be first on the bus each day (they wanted a special seat and there was no seat rotation) and people rushed into the dining room to save their favorite table and pushed and shoved. Rarely did anyone even say hello as you passed in the corridor or greet you with a hello or good morning. Very strange. Poor attention to illness: On day 2 of the cruise many people became ill with a flu/cold virus. People were coughing everywhere and you could see how sick they were. We got the crud on day 3. I was running a fever and literally spent 3 days in bed. Viking did NOTHING to accommodate the ill passengers, even though there were at least 50+ sick passengers. We knew there was no medical center on this little boat, but there wasn't even any cough syrup or cough drops to purchase. One passenger was at the front desk asking for assistance and the answer was, we can arrange to have a taxi take you into the town, but it will be at your own expense. Couldn't they even go to a pharmacy and pick up some cough medicine when the boat and busses were like being in a sanitarium for TB patients? Shame on the Viking crew. Hotel in Bucharest: The Raddison Blu was a nice "convention type" hotel. Some will read this review and assume that because we became ill, our trip was spoiled and we were therefore disappointed. I assure you this was not the case. It was not the illness that spoiled the trip, it was the Viking experience. We acknowledge that perhaps we are not meant to take river cruises and perhaps a different itinerary, other than Eastern Europe would be different. Read Less

I booked this cruise after seeing great ratings on cruise critic...We were bused everywhere and the ship was only used as a floating hotel....We only had One day of scenic cruising on Viking....We were told by the company that the problem was due to low water levels,however, senior offices advised that the bus trips have been ongoing since August....We were not given any opportunity to cancel the cruise,however i saw a posting from a travel agent who viking contacted and invited him to get a refund...Wow talk about selective attitude to patrons....The whole cruise was terrible,made worse by constant changes to itineraries and times of departures...The first day we spent 9 hours on a 3 star coach .....The poor staff are sick of making excuses for the companies lack of ethics....We have a long experience with Ocean cruising over 500 days on the water.We can honestly say this is by far our worse experience on the water or BUS... Viking Cruise line, in my opinion, is the low end cruise line. The food was served late and at best was just ok. The staff was very nice. The room was clean. After dinner, usually about 9PM there was little to do unless we were in a port where we could get off the ship. That was not often. Do not pay for a Balcony because you probably won't use it. The cruise ships are lined up side by side so you are looking into another boat's stateroom. You will have to keep your drapes closed when in port. I did walk aboard some of the other ships that were lined up with ours and they were the same size but they had gyms and pools, hot tubs and saunas. We paid for flight up grades and insurance. We had to pay 2700 dollars to change our flights due to the hurricane and we could only change through Viking. We paid for upgrade on our flights and then when we go to Frankfurt we did not have the upgrade! The cabins are so small you are constantly stepping on your room mate and just think after dinner if you don't want to sit in the bar, you are stuck in that little room. Ultimately we spent $20,000.00 on this trip and it was not worth it. Do your self a favor and choose a different cruise line. Read Less

We were on 4 different ships which meant packing and unpacking every time with bus rides between ships. Our room flooded 3 times with sewer water on different ships. I asked for a ice pack for my diabetes meds because of the long bus rides and was refused by a hotel manager. Thus it went bad and caused me big problems. This was on our bucket list, I'm 80 and saved for years for trip. We received a letter from Viking Cruise Line offering a small % for our next cruise with Viking, I called and asked for cash which replied no. Be careful when you plan a cruise. Read Less
