The cruise was outstanding. Spent 2 days in Budapest before the cruise. Budapest is a wonderful city with so many beautiful sites. Very easy to get around. Stayed in Hilton hotel in Pest which had a wonderful view of the city Embarkation was very easy. The ship was wonderful and the staff was very attentive and helpful. The food was excellent. Have to commend the cruise director who booked a private tour of sound of music movie sites in Salzburg that was wonderful and very reasonable in price. She went beyond expectations and spent a lot of time arranging this. The staff on board was very friendly and helpful at all times. The staff and Viking cruise line did a wonderful job working around a delay caused by high water that allowed us to get to all destinations without having to change ships. Rooms were very nice and similar in size to a sea cruise except veranda is much smaller. Room attendant was very helpful and did a wonderful job. All the included shore excursions were very nice and gave a quick overview of each stop. Most of the guides were very good. I would highly recommend this trip for allowing you to see the cities up close and personal which you cant do on a sea cruise. The castles were wonderful and so common. Lots of history which was fun and so interesting . More than what I expected!! Read Less

15 days just seemed like a good length of time to spend on, what we thought was going to be, a relaxing cruise through Europe. After spending three teriffic days in Prague, we were bussed to Buddapest where my wife fell on the cobblestones and scraped her knee pretty badly. So she limped through the tours provided, and even fell again in one of the castles. But she was having such a good time on the ship, and on the tours, that you would never know she was "wounded." When we got home, I asked her what she thought of the cruise. We cruise quite a bit (3 or 4 times a year) so I was anxious to hear what she was going to say. She said she thought it was one of our two best cruises ever. I thought about her answer, and I agreed. It ranked right up there with our cruise in Tahiti and the Society Islands. Enough cannot be said about how the Viking crew/staff treated us passengers. There was nothing they wouldn't do for us. They were great. So, besides the two falls, this trip was super. Read Less

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!! GREATEST VACTION WE'VE EVER BEEN ON!!!!! From the moment we landed at the Budapest airport the Viking team was on the ball. You are welcomed on board the ship with a complimentary drink and escorted directly to our room and then enjoyed lunch. Throughout the entire trip one meal after the other was outstanding. All of our wait staff (Raul, Stan, and Mai) made every meal a great experience. Because of the wide variety and tastes of the soups at lunch I've become a soup eater back home. The Viking crew was always on the ball, they were organized and planned ahead for issues that happen on a River Cruise. Can't wait to do it again and YES it will be on Viking. Our tour director Dawn worked hard to make sure that our excursions went smoothly even though we high a problem with high river water which caused us to fall almost a full day behind on the cruise portion. Because of Vikings great service the arranged for slightly longer bus trips, etc. so that we did not miss one of the planned destinations. The Captain and crew worked hard to catch up once water levels reduced and our trip ended exactly as planned. Only suggestion I would make to anyone is to extend your trip at the end. We got to tour our embarkation city (Budapest) but only got to see Amsterdam on a bus going to the airport. By staying with the extension, you get to see both. Read Less

I was pleasantly surprised with the service that Viking provided. Transfers to and from airports were effortless for the traveler. Accommodations on the ship were excellent: a well thought out stateroom with plenty of room in bedroom and bath. The ship was beautiful, food delicious, and the staff was friendly and very considerate. Viking thinks of every detail: Bottled water in the room, umbrellas for rainy weather, easy to use audio system for guided tours (which were excellent), and afternoon cookies waiting upon arrival from that guided tour. The ports and excursions included in the tour were interesting, beautiful, and historically significant. The entertainment and special events on board such as a cooking demonstration or other cultural program from the area were interesting. Before the cruise we visited Ghent and Bruges which were excellent locations to view historical and picturesque sites. We added on a stay in Budapest at the end of the trip, which I highly recommend, as there is so much to see and do in this city. We stayed at the Hilton overlooking the Danube and city below. Unbelievable views! Read Less

We arrived in Amsterdam after a long plane trip from Atlanta. We were tired and it was raining in Amsterdam so we boarded the ship and stayed on board. We were welcomed at the airport by a Viking representative who was very solicitous and assisted with collecting our luggage and getting us promptly to the ship. We had an excellent room and could go out on our patio or to the outside deck area any time to enjoy the scenery, sit and visit, read, or... The Viking staff took excellent care of our room and provided assistance where and when needed. The restaurant was excellent - great food, fantastic service, great views as we cruised, and many opportunities to meet and visit with fellow travelers. We had time to share food and wine with people from various parts of the United States, Canada, Ireland, England, and Australia. The staff serving in the restaurant, as well as in other public areas, were from a number of European countries - they spoke excellent English and, when engaged, shared information about their home countries. We enjoyed the entertainment and always looked forward to presentations by our Cruise Director. The tours included with the cruise were excellent as were the optional tours we took. The guides were knowledgeable and communicated well. They were from the areas we were touring and so were able to provide a better tour. At the end of the cruise portion of our trip we did a three day extension to/in Prague. Viking staff took care of us the whole time we were there. Our tours were also conducted by Viking contracted guides and were very knowledgeable. Viking staff got us from Budapest to Prague, were there at the hotel when we needed assistance, and got us to the airport and through the check-in process. There were lots of opportunities to see and take pictures of the sights along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers. Lots of cathedrals, castles, museums, and other sites that are part of European history. There were lots of opportunities to take pictures and bring home memories. We are looking forward to our next trip with Viking which we are hoping will be the Viking Homeland cruise. We have highly recommended this cruise to others who might be interested and even if they are not thinking about it at this time. We are very interested in history and why we are what we are today- this trip put pictures to what we have read and been taught. Read Less

We did a four day pre ship option- 1 day in Brussels, 1 day in Bruge, & 2 days in Amsterdam. The ship was fine but I have nothing else to compare it to. This was our first cruise. We wanted to do a river cruise before trying an ocean cruise. I get sea sick easily. Joey, our program director, was great and very entertaining. We started calling his daily info session, the Joey Show. The food was great but the problem was I gained weight cuz I could not resist it. The best thing about it was that the cabin was like a motel room but every morning when you wake up, open the curtains and you are in a new place. The shore excursions were great. We did all of the included tours and I was very pleased that although the guides were from the place, their English was very good. We also did two tours that were not included and they were very good. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we wanted to take a longer river cruise for our first one. This trip included extra pre-cruise days in Belgium, then a river cruise Amsterdam to Budapest. We were met upon arrival in Brussels, escorted to our hotel for our pre-cruise in Bruges, then motorcoached to the ship in Amsterdam for start of the cruise. At the end we were taken to the Budapest airport. All went smoothly with courteous Viking escorts. My wife's and my experience could not have been better. The ship was great, the service excellent, terrific food, and excellent "shore excursions" and tours. We usually just took the "included" tours, which were well organized, educational and entertaining, well paced, and led by excellent local guides. We also enjoyed the various on-ship "enrichment" offerings, which were enjoyable and educational, as well as entertaining. Fellow travelers were nice and interesting, the staff was friendly and helpful. Do be aware that you are on a river cruise, but you will do LOTS OF WALKING in towns. All very much fun. We liked the "open dining", which always had great food and lots of choices. Enjoyed being able to opt for "lighter" fare in the terrace lounge sometimes. We are not much of drinkers, but the main lounge was nice with enjoyable entertainment in evenings. All in all it was a tremendous experience; we have already booked another Viking River Cruise in Russia for next year. Read Less

Heard good things about Viking and they were all true. We loved the overall experience - everything from just watching the world go by on our balcony to the guided tours were great. We also enjoyed the casual atmosphere on the ship along with meeting the other passengers. The ship was fabulous - plenty of places to hang out and relax with nice clean decor. Staff was also great, espcially our program director named Joey. He was awesome! He was helpful, funny and kept us well informed. Food was good and there was plenty of it. The excursions were very well organized. We mostly took the included tours which were very well done. We also did a couple of the optional tours which were exceptional. For the excursions we were often bused to a location in modern, comfortable buses. Only thing that wasn't great was the Internet (extremely slow) and tv (very limited options) We were in Germany during the recent flooding so Viking had to make some adjustments to the schedule because of the height of the river. We were so impressed with how they handled everything during those coup,e of days. They kept us well informed, managed to get us to all of our destinations but one, but made alternate arrangements for that one. We can't wait to go on another Viking cruise. Read Less

The ship was beautiful, and the staff were top-notch. Every effort was made to give us a wonderful experience, and these efforts were successful. My only suggestion to Viking is to in some way, attempt to make the atmosphere more inclusive. We are a same-sex, married couple; and we had to endure no end of questions from our fellow passengers regarding the nature of our relationship. Upon debarkation, the purser presented me with my bill only (despite my having requested the entire bill for the stateroom), requiring me to wait in line a second time to pay the charges that were in my husband's name. When one looks at a Viking ad, one sees obviously well-off, attractive, white, opposite-sex couples. This is in contrast to Princess Cruises (our last major trip), which makes an obvious effort to show a variety of races, ethnicities, and life-styles in their trip photos and ads. I loved Viking, but felt more at ease on Princess. Read Less

We loved the Tulips and Windmills trip we took in April 2015. This year we wanted to see more of Europe through the Grand European River Cruise. We were so exhausted from our travels from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam that we tried to catch up on sleep since the weather was cold and rainy, rather then sight see. Fortunately we got to see Amsterdam the previous year. We really enjoyed the German cities of Cologne, Koblenz, Miltenberg, Wurzburg, Bramberg, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau; as well as Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary. The country side was absolutely beautiful as we passed slowing on the river and through all the locks that we had to go through to change from one river to another and change in elevations in the rivers. We couldn't ask for better food on the ship or a such a comfortable cabin that met all our needs and wants. We have already booked our next Viking river cruise for Oct. 2016 to go to China. Viking does such a great job of taking care of their passengers needs and comforts on the ship. The shore excursions are so wonderful that I want to come back to all the places we have visitied so I can spend more time. I have learned so much about European history that I didn't know and truly appreciate the exposure to new cultures and cuisine. Viking does such a great job in organizing everything on the day of disembarking. We had no worries about luggage or missing our flights. They helped make the transitions into the airports and getting our tickets flow so smoothly. We really appreciated all the Viking crew that spoke excellent English so we could communicate with all of them. Read Less

Viking caters to my age and demographics. And they knew exactly how to care for us, feed us, and sooth us. They know their craft of educating, enriching and exposing us to new and exciting adventures and yet comforting and making us feel secure. We could not have enjoyed our experiences more. There was not one crisis to face as our crew and tour Director was always there first. Outing were well planned and executed flawlessly. Dining was exceptional and the staff made you feel like they were truly interested in making you happy. Service was pleasant always no matter how trivial the request, if it was important to you, it was important to them. Cabin space was close but adequate and as time went on you felt comfortable in the public spaces of the ship and used your cabin less. Comforts in the cabin were all in place and easy to function. I would not hesitate to book again and recommend this to my friends. Read Less

Always wanted to do a Viking Cruise. We did the Rhine Getaway in April 2016. Highly recommend if anyone does this Cruise when you are in Strasbourg, France to do the optional tour "A Taste of Alsace". What a wonderful excursion. One day we cruised and saw so many castles it was unbelievable. I think there were about 18 castles. Also like how you have free time to tour or shop or just go into town for local entertainment. And Joey, our tour director, was the best! No complaints regarding the food or drinks. The themed dinners were very nice, especially German Night. Enjoyed the accordion player and the organ grinder. We really have no complaints about this Cruise and are ready to go again! The only con was the weather at the end went we got to Amsterdam. We did the extra nights but it rained and hailed and was so cold we were unable to really do anything. Oh well, Que Sera' Sera'! Read Less

restaurants - the service was impeccable, always ready to assist with a smile. The staff could not do enough for the guests. the food was average tasting but elegantly presented. I think the problem was the quality of the beef offerings or possibly the country it was obtained from. No matter how elegantly it was presented, the beef was just average. Maybe you need another supplier. The kitchen sure did their job in the presentation, but it was the flavor. Chicken dishes were better. The cabin was lovely, clean at all times, bright and airy, light color furnishings. Bathroom sparkled. The housekeepers were exceptional. They did their job with a smile at all times. the room sparkled, linens were bright white and pressed, a joy to sleep in. The ship's staff was excellent. "Joey" our cruise director was exceptional. It was always a pleasure to meet with the group and him in the lounge at the end of our day, one never knew what he would say. He had us laughing over and over again. Excellent choice. He made our trip! Our housekeeping manager was excellent, any request was joyously provided! She was great! The excursions were well chosen. The ship's hotel staff, from top to bottom was excellent. The Captain and his staff ensured everything went smoothly from start to finish. Paris was, well, Paris (fabulous). The Viking personnel there were efficient and courteous. The hotel, Le Meridian, was ok. Breakfast was very good. The room was clean. Our view from the room was of the HVAC system. And one day they missed cleaning our room. Not quite five stars. We opted for the two extra days there (on our own). The location of the hotel, near the Arc de Triumph, led to ease in self exploration of that great city. Read Less

The tours are adapted to seniors and there was enough free time and tips to make every excursion enjoyable. The only disappointment was the rainy weather, as we would have loved to enjoy the sun deck more. Viking greeted us with hot towels and warm drinks upon our return to the ship to make up for this. As our first river cruise, we weren't sure what to expect. It is definitely different than ocean cruising so resetting your expectations is step #1. Also, if you are going in December for the Christmas markets, expect weather. This means wet-ish winter. Our cruise director told us "there is no bad weather, only bad clothes." It was definitely true. Have long underwear, dress in layers, have a coat AND gloves (no kidding, some people didn't bring them.) Be prepared that every day is not going to be sunny and warm. Also, don't be overly disappointed if you don't get a Currier and Ives snowy day effect. We were told that snow generally doesn't start until after the new year. In exchange, the tourist crowds are much smaller and the lights of the season are GORGEOUS. This was a gorgeous cruise. The Danube is beautiful. All of the Christmas markets were beautifully lit. Strolling along, looking at the lights and people watching is free. The smaller stops were so beautiful with their cobblestones and ancient (for those of us from the United States) castles, cathedrals and just buildings along the streets. Just beautiful and so interesting. We went to some of the larger cities (Vienna and Budapest), but I really loved the smaller towns. Local people were friendly. I never felt unsafe (and we are from a smaller town), but, that said, be smart about keeping your wallets in inside pockets and purses close at hand. They definitely kept us busy, starting out each morning with a tour. Some of the excursions had a nice local flavor (like time with a local baker in Passau who explained the history of gingerbread and made some for us using old family recipes and molds.) We often had free time. I like those kinds of trips but if you are a sleep late or a "do nothing and veg-out" vacationer or if you are looking for high-excitement excursions like on some ocean cruises, this is not for you. Our cruise went from Passau to Budapest. If you are taking this cruise I'd suggest you do it in that order because coming into Budapest at night is definitely a highlight and having it toward the end of the trip made it extra special. Also, the Christmas markets in Budapest struck me as having more interesting and local items than some of the other places we went. It was great to have that as an ending and doing it the other way around might nave been anticlimactic. The Viking ship was beautiful. The staterooms were open and clean and new. We had a french balcony cabin. This is a floor-to-ceiling window that slides open to a railing, but that was wonderful for this trip. It was lovely watching the towns and countryside of the Danube float past and even in December, it wasn't too cold to have it open on some days. The crew was friendly and upbeat. The food was only average, but I have been told that is common because of the size of river cruise ships and their kitchens (again, this is not an ocean voyage.) Once great thing was that Viking was not charging us extra for everything along the way. On board, you get a standard wine with your dinner and drinks at the bar are extra but it did not feel to me like they were trying to push all kinds of products at me to buy like on some of the ocean cruises I have taken. There were about 200 guests on our cruise. We found them to be very friendly and approachable - just nice people. Dining is at larger tables and basically at one time, so by the end of the cruise, people seemed to fall into companionable dining groups. Seating is not assigned. The shore excursions were generally walking or bus tours of the city (depending on its size) and included visits to the castles etc. Viking has a nice audio system for these excursions (included) - you have a little radio unit and earbuds that you recharge in your cabin overnight for the next day. When you arrive for your tour the next morning, the guide tells you what channel to dial in on to hear them. They you walk around without all of the yelling that you may have experienced in the past. It worked really well. One note of consideration for some ... if you have walking problems you might want to consider the depth of the river at the time you are going. The Danube was very low when we were there. Although we could still complete our itinerary (apparently, that isn't always so, especially further north on the river) it made the gangplanks sometimes very steep at some stops, perhaps too steep for some to climb up. The ship may have alternatives to assist, however. Also, there is alot of walking - over cobblestones - at some of the stops. We seldom had a day where our fitbits were at fewer than 15,000 steps. Definitely don't miss Prague as an extension. It was amazing! Read Less

Took the Christmas cruise from Budapest to Passau. Weather was not the best; overcast all days but one. This is not a viking issue though. Experience was terrific aboard ship. Great food, terrific service and good entertainment. Took only the optional Mozart/Strauss classical presentation. Only 1 1/2 hours, but the musicians, dancers and vocalists were extremely good. Seats not the best and the intermission champagne was below good, but the music and acoustics were great. And no electronics, just pure instrument sounds. Would advise it. Back to the boat though. The selections at each meal were varied and all great except only one night with German sausages that was only good, not my preference. All activities were explained, on time and reviewed the evening before. Very helpful. The free morning tours were usually good with some gaps in the walking tours. I especially liked the service that Viking provided for airport transportation at the beginning and end of the trip. Convenient and timely. The Christmas bazaars got to be redundant after the first two or three, but not under Viking control. Read Less

We had the crew of the Alsvin but we were on the Viking Modi. We were notified of the change in ships because of low water levels but ended up being able to sail on Viking Modi for our entire trip on Thanksgiving week. We really had an excellent time. The included tours were great and so was the one additional tour we took. This is definitely the way to travel - you can do as much or as little as you want. You can go on group tours or strike out on your own anytime you want. Staff were truly exceptional - very friendly, accommodating, spirited, fun, and most assuredly competent and super organized. The Hotel Manager, Program Director, and Concierge were truly exceptional. The Hotel Manager was wonderful, even going out of his way to accommodate a special request from a passenger. The Program Director and Concierge quickly adjusted the tours when they saw that there were some elderly people with walking issues and by the second day started offering "Leisurely Tours" for those groups as well as the regular tours and even some more active tours for the adventurous groups. They really did provide something for everyone. The chef and his staff were truly outstanding and prepared the most amazing food - every single meal was delicious. The Taste of Austria was beyond compare. The head of the dining room and his staff were very friendly and charming. The stateroom staff were very efficient, unobtrusive, and friendly. My husband and I travel often, however, this was our first Viking Cruise. It will definitely not be our last. Everything about this cruise was top notch. Crew members were amazing They were always pleasant and went out of their way to accommodate any reasonable requests made by any of the guests. They also did a great job of handling the the unreasonable complaints made by guests.[One person complained of no balcony after booking a room with no balcony!?] The Longship was kept spotless. Our house keeper did a fabulous job of restocking and being sure that everything in our cabin was perfect. Food was tasty and plentiful. The kitchen staff did any and everything possible to be sure to meet each passengers' specific needs. Tours were very good. I'm not a "group tour" person, so did some exploring on my own. Sites we visited were outstanding. Each evening before dinner guests were given a briefing of the following day's activities. A "newspaper"describing the following day's activities was also left in each stateroom. We were well informed of what to expect. The ship's lounge was the gathering place for the briefings and most on board activities. The on board activities were varied and always fun and/or informative. One of my favorites was the Glassblower from Bamberg. We joined folks in the lounge daily for Happy Hour and again after dinner for either scheduled entertainment or to listen to the wonderful piano playing of Nikoli. We opted to do an extra 2 nights in Budapest at the end of our cruise. The hotel was fabulous. Our room had a view of Fishermen's Bastion and the Danube. We were fortunate to have a wedding take place on the bastion that we watched from our room. Be sure to try the paprikash in Budapest! All in all I would highly recommend this Viking cruise and am looking forward to doing another within the next two years. Read Less

This is the first river cruise we have take and are now truly spoiled. Viking was amazing...although we were particularly fortunately to be sailing on the newly launched Modi. Being a latte lover, I enjoyed being able to rise to a hot latte with fresh baked pastries every morning at no additional charge. Meals were excellent - good variety and portion sizes that allowed you to enjoy several courses without becoming overly full. The shore excursions were top notch. Each of the tour guides was very knowledgeable as well as friendly and entertaining. In Nuremberg there was a bit of a problem with the timing of the ship docking (delayed at locks) to pick us up after our free time in town. Viking didn't miss a beat and had us all herded off to a nearby pub for a complementary drink and Nuremberg sausage on a keiser roll. The captain was able to get special permission for us to board at a lock. Problem? What problem? We were all happy travellers. Marianne, our tour coordinator was exceptional. She had all the guides and busses coordinated and everything running smoothly. Not only that, she is a great singer and an entertaining "Dutchie" introducing us to the customs of the Netherlands. Only downside was that the top deck was closed to passengers for several days due to water levels allowing the Modi to barely squeeze under the bridges. Small thing compared to the overall excellence. PS: Anyone worried about being sea sick can rest assured that it is often impossible to know if the ship is even moving it is so smooth. Read Less

Bathe scenery, the excursions, the historical facts presented were top notch. By the time we finished the cruise we knew most of the passengers on board and all the crew which made for a nice and friendly cruise. I highly recommend this Viking cruise and the Viling organization. In fact, we have already booked our next Viking cruise. Read Less

We took our third River cruise on Viking and had a fabulous time! Enjoyed the people cruising with us, the incredible staff and the culinary creations of the chef! The ship is intimate, not the usual herds of people on an ocean liner. Crew was outstanding, friendly and most accommodating. Any time we can work out a cruise on a Viking ship, we will take it! If you are expecting Broadway entertainment, casinos and flashy dance floors, this is not for you. But if you are interested in history, expanding your horizons for a better understanding of our world and meeting great people, go on a Viking River cruise! It cannot be beat! Read Less

What a wonderful experience on our second Viking river cruise. We were scheduled to travel from Basel to Amsterdam for 7 nights. We booked our air travel through Viking and spent a long day with a couple of transfers to get from Denver to Basel. Upon arrival in Basel we were met by Viking personnel who informed us that, due to high water levels on the Rhine, the ship was unable to get to Basel. We were bussed about 1-1/2 hours north to Breisach where the ship was docked. Breisach was actually the port where we were supposed to be docked the first night, so we only missed a walking tour of Basel, for which we would have arrived too late anyway. Our room was a French balcony on the 3rd level, and it was small (135 square feet). We had a queen-size bed that was very comfortable. I didn't like the comforter and had trouble sleeping the first night - too hot, throw off the comforter, then too cold, etc. The next morning we requested a top sheet and our lovely housekeeper Svetla added one right away - no more trouble sleeping. The bathroom was also small but functional - excellent shower and L'Occitane soap, shampoo, etc. The room has adequate storage - nice closet, a few drawers and shelves, and a small refrigerator, nice for keeping cold water and other beverages. Housekeeping was excellent - they were always leaving fresh towels and straightening up the room when we were out. Dining was good - I didn't think the food was as good as our cruise last year (Paris to Normandy) but there were plenty of choices and we never went hungry. Breakfast was a buffet with omelet station, or we could order eggs, eggs benedict, French toast etc. from a menu. Loved the croissants and the different types of jam made on board, much better than the jams in jars on the table. Lunch was either sit-down in the dining room or a small buffet in the lounge. We didn't eat much lunch, but it looked good. Dinner was always lots of choices - appetizers, main courses, desserts, cheese plate. One night I didn't want any of the main courses and had one appetizer and another appetizer as my main course - they brought me extra to make up a main course with no problem. The only night that was not good was the German night. They set up a buffet of typical German food and it was very disorganized and hectic. We bought the Silver Spirits package so we could choose a different bottle of wine every night, better than the house wine. We enjoyed working with Seta each night to choose the right wine, and had some very good wines, along with beer during the day and after-dinner drinks in the evening. We definitely got our money's worth. Our wait staff was Martina and Edison and we enjoyed sitting in their section every night. Excursions were all very good. We enjoyed them all - my favorite was the optional winery tour, very well done and excellent wines. Also loved cruising the Middle Rhine and seeing all the castles perched on the hilltops, was amazed at Heidelberg Castle, and learned a lot at Kinderdijk. All tour guides were outstanding - from Felicity (Black Forest) who told us about living in East Germany under the Communists to Peter (Colmar) who played French folk songs on his accordion during the bus ride back to the ship. We also visited Strasbourg and Cologne before arriving in Amsterdam. Staff - absolutely the best. They went above and beyond to make sure we had a great cruise. At one time, the Rhine was closed to traffic due to high water levels. The staff had to juggle schedules, docking ports, excursion timing, pretty much the whole cruise to make sure we didn't miss anything. At one time, it looked like we would be cruising the Middle Rhine (castles) at night......ugh. The staff managed to rearrange things so we saw all the castles - it started very early in the morning, but definitely worth getting up for! The only things we missed were the German dinner in Rudesheim (optional tour that we had not signed up for) and extra time in Cologne. I was so impressed at how hard everyone worked to re-schedule things. For example, we had to spend extra time in Heidelberg (not bad) - with less than 12 hours notice, the staff arranged a sit-down lunch for 150 people at a restaurant in the old part of the city. Impressive! Kudos to Program Director Roos, Hotel Manager Claudia, Captain Istvan and all the crew for their hard work to ensure that we all had a memorable cruise. We booked the post-cruise excursion in Amsterdam with Viking. We liked the Moevenpick Hotel. It was not in the center of the city, but we purchased the IAmsterdam cards and could take the nearby tram to anywhere in the city, very easy and convenient. All in all, a wonderful cruise. We met some wonderful people (staff and fellow passengers), saw impressive things and learned a lot of new information, ate and drank and danced and laughed. An excellent experience.....we are already thinking about next year's cruise. The only thing we would do differently is pay for a larger cabin. Read Less

Our Rhine river cruise started in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and ended in Basel, Switzerland where we continued to Zurich by train for an independent stay. Since I had lived in Europe for a few years, we decided to travel independently to Amsterdam and made our own flight and hotel reservations; however, most people on the cruise used Viking's full travel services to book. We stayed at the Park Hotel, which was centrally located in the museum (Riks, Van Gogh) section of Amsterdam and within easy walking distance of all major city sights. The hotel is on a canal where you can pick up a canal cruise directly across the street or hop a tram two short blocks away. One caution for departure -- if you stay in a hotel other than that selected by Viking, which in this case was the Movenpick, you need to obtain the phone number for the ship in Amsterdam so you can determine from which dock it will leave. The dock for this departure was directly behind the Movenpick; however, there are two other possible locations. Since the dock is not determined until a day or so before departure we had to rely on the concierge at the Park hotel to make calls to find where the ship was docked. It would have been good to know in advance what time the ship would depart so that we could have done more sightseeing in Amsterdam the day of departure - so try to determine this in advance. In this case it was 11:30 in the evening. The Viking Modi is brand new and was on its fourth trip. The ship is squeaky clean, and while not as elegant (or gaudy) as a larger cruise ships, it was decorated with clean, modern furnishings. Our stateroom, which was one of 180, was an adequate size and is further detailed in my comments on the cabin. But, what really set this cruise apart was the friendliness and efficiency of the crew. We will never forget Claudia, the hotel manager, who made it all happen; Roos, the program director, with her quick wit, excellent presentations and great tours; Captain Gabor; Lucas, one of the chefs, who was always so pleasant and loved ice hokey; Sera and the other waitress staff; and Tony, the efficient concierge. The staff truly seemed to love their jobs and it showed in their smiles, the quality of service and their willingness to help wherever needed. The food was excellent -- breakfast buffet with eggs to order in the morning, lunch included various lighter menu options (soup, sandwiches, salads) served either in the dining room or on the terrace, and dinner was always superb with multiple choices for the entree. The house wines were very good but other wines were also available. We didn't purchase the Premium beverage package since it is required that you purchase it for two people if you are sharing a stateroom. It would not have been cost effective for us since one of us didn't drink much. We had daily stops along the Rhine River for included tours (local guides), and there were multiple optional trips as well - we took them all! If you have the energy take advantage of as many of the tours as you can. They also offered tours for those that didn't or couldn't walk as much as others on the cruise. Stops included: Kinderjijk for its windmills, Cologne (plus optional tour: Bruhl Palace), Koblenz's Marksburg Castle, Rudesheim (plus optional German dinner), Heidelberg city/castle, stroll through Speyer, Strasbourg city tour (plus optional Alsace wine tour - a pleasant surprise), Breisach (plus optional Colmar tour). Roos, our program director, provided a evening program explaining the next days activities and a look at various aspects of where we would be touring. There was also a daily bulletin in our rooms each evening with an overview of the next days tour. Due to heavy rains and high water on the Rhine, the locks were closed before we could sail on to Basel. The staff quickly organized a bus to get us to our final destination in Basel. Overall, it was a fabulous trip! We will be traveling with Viking again. Read Less
