We sailed from Amsterdam to Budapest on the Viking Modi. I had always wanted to see the castles along the rivers, and this cruise gave me that opportunity. We booked this trip to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in style. The Modi had all the amenities we needed, and the staff gave us excellent service. We enjoyed the dining experience and the quality of the food and wine we were served. We had the opportunity to explore many old and historic cities of central Europe, and saw enough cathedrals and castles to last a lifetime! We explored our departure city, Amsterdam, for several days prior to the cruise and loved the city and its people. We also stayed extra days in Budapest, which is a fascinating city. Our next cruise will encompass a different part of Europe, probably Scandinavia, since my wife has expressed an interest in the northern part of the continent. Read Less

We have been aboard ocean cruises and were seeking to have a more intermit and focused experience while enjoying the comfort of one berthing as we traveled. We received our recommendation from friends that had travelled with Viking and elected to take a two week trip. We travelled to Italy and joined our Viking River Cruise in Amsterdam. Getting on the boat was a very pleasurable event, which afforded us plenty of time to visit Amsterdam prior to sailing. We enjoyed our interaction with the very professional crew, the comfort of the boat and our cabin. The food and service was on the top end of any dining experience we have encountered. Every excursion was a pleasurable adventure and we loved walking in the towns and villages that we visited. The crew was very knowledgeable with respect to history and culture and we even learned to speak some German. We shall return and will will do so with Viking. Read Less

When the ship had engine problems the response of the crew was excellent in scheduling alternative sightseeing, meals, etc. The cash allowance was a nice gesture. We made the trip with two other couples and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The pre and post cruise stays in Prague and Amsterdam were in nice hotels and the sightseeing was well organized. They were definitely worth the extra money. The only detail that needs work is the bus from Prague to Budapest. The train would be a much more enjoyable experience. We enjoyed the entire experience and we will be trying the Viking ocean cruise in the Baltic next year. Hopefully the quality will be the same in a larger scale. Read Less

We celebrated our 30th anniversary in October, 2017 by taking a 15 day river cruise in Europe. We arrived in Amsterdam the day of sailing. We were met at the airport by Viking Representatives and taken to our ship. The Viking Modi made a great first impression! We were greeted by friendly, smiling faces and the staff went out of their way to make our trip a first class experience. We did the 15 day cruise and all of the included excursions. We enjoyed every excursion - the staff was very organized and the transport to and from the excursions was very prompt. The tour guides were wonderful and made our experience a lot of fun. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner most days on the ship. The food was great, with a nice variety of choices. The dining room service was great; the servers were very friendly and made every meal and enjoyable experience. There was live music and dancing every night in the lounge. They also brought entertainment in from the local areas that we visited. The bartenders and wait staff were excellent. One morning, they had a glass blower come aboard for show and tell. It was very interesting to see and we could purchase blown glass jewelry and other items that he brought with him. I definitely recommend the Viking River Cruise and hope to be able to do another River Cruise to Europe. Read Less

My brother chose this cruise for his 70th birthday trip as he had wanted to try a river cruise.Embarkation was very slick, airport pick up and transfer vehicle were on point. The dining experience was excellent as were the staff in the dining room and bar area,in fact all of the Viking Modi staff are exemplary and a credit to the company. The tours are very well organised and timings are a good blend of very knowledgeable local tour guides and time to explore alone before sailing on. Entertainment was a little limited, the shake up duo were talented but for the most part had the same play list every night with a few evenings exceptions. I am pretty sure they ramped up the sound in the lounge area a couple of nights in which made conversation impossible therefore the lounge was invariably deserted by 10pm. A couple of nights we had entertainment from locals, opera in Vienna, Hungarian folk music etc which was very enjoyable. Our main disappointment was that the sun deck was closed for 5 days of the trip an occurance which was not clearly documented anywhere in the brochure or mentioned at the time of booking by our travel agent (if TA was even aware of the fact), this meant that outside space was limited to a small area at the bow of the ship and the two side balconies, speaking for my husband and myself we were going stir crazy as my husband likes to walk the deck and take photographs, the walking track, small putting area and deck quoits could not be used. The majority of our sailing companions were very well travelled and educated people with the exception of a few who were avoided sometime with difficulty as escape routes were few. Read Less

We found the staff to be absolutely outstanding in their efforts to ensure we enjoyed our vacation and that we were able to relax, participate and enjoy ourselves. The people we met in each city, country and venue were proud of who they were, where they were from and the history of their countries. Everywhere we were treated as if we were at home and felt comfortable and safe. It was like we were all one big happy family. Some of the staff we formed special relationships with. I am of Finnish heritage and the Finns and Hungarians originated form the same peoples and region of ancient Europe, so my wife and I started to learn Hungarian and teach some Finnish to two of the Hungarian staff. They were very personable and cared for us and our time there. Now that I have been there I know I could live happily in Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary of Austria. Read Less

The ship was clean. The food was excellent. It was interesting to taste the wines of the region as we sailed through. I met some very interesting passengers. Many of the port excursions are included in the price of the cruise, however we paid for some extra excursions which were well worth the price. On this cruise, I would definitely recommend the excursion to the top of the cathedral in Cologne and the World War II excursion at Nuremberg. All the tour guides spoke excellent English and were well versed in their subject matter. In the future, I would extend my trip at either end if the option was available. We took advantage of the daily on-shore experiences and found the guides to be very knowledgeable and fun. We chose the Viking Grand European Tour because we had heard Viking was by far, the best cruise line and secondly, friends had told us the Budapest to Amsterdam route was extremely beautiful traveling four countries and three major rivers. I think we went thru 68 locks as we sailed from the Rhine to the Main onto the Danube. Seeing castles and windmills both from the water and upclose via tours was truly magical. We stayed for an extra 2 days in Budapest prior to our cruise along with an extra 2 days in Amsterdam at the end of the cruise. These extra days gave us more opportunity to explore these 2 cities. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly and only took a matter of minutes. Our cabin provided ample room for the time that we actually spent in it. The dining was excellent and we really appreciated it that we were not assigned seating. This gave us the ability to seat at different tables and visit with numerous people. Most of our waiters were excellent. The excursions were fantastic and we have ample time to explore the different cities on our own. We tried to take as many extra excursions as we could. Read Less

Always wanted to go to Normandy and Paris. It was everything I hoped for and more. The tour of the beaches at Normandy and the cemetery was very moving and special. Also, the special service with the park staff that was held for our tour was a deep and meaningful time. The German bunkers and gun emplacements were not expected a a nice surprise. Paris was also a wonderful city. We really enjoy the smaller towns more than the large cities but Paris was very nice. We enjoyed the Eiffel Tower by day and by night. The Arch de Triumph was as beautiful as expected. On board the Modi, the crew interacted with the passengers daily. We really enjoyed the daily briefings and the Chef's daily recommendations. Food and service were excellent. Viking took care of our every need - from water during the excursions to having umbrellas available. We were fortunate that it only rained slightly on two days and neither interfered with our tours. Looking forward to our next cruise with Viking. Read Less

We chose this time to travel because it is normally so Hot and Humid in Houston Texas, and we wanted to avoid the heat. We arrived 2 days early in Amsterdam to adjust to the time change before the cruise and see more sights in Amsterdam. We learned too late that the way to travel from the airport to the City was via the public rail transit. It is cheap and reliable. Buy a day pass for the number of days you are in Amsterdam. Once on the Modi, Viking handled everything for us - We has booked a AA-Veranda Suite and it was well worth the extra $$ - we had a seating area that made it relaxing in our room and this level offers free laundry ( which we started using after a few days into the cruise). The room was on the highest deck which was much quieter than the decks below, especially going through the Locks. The open seating was fun as we shared meals with people from all over the world. the quality of food was outstanding. I got to explain the US Electoral College to several people that were interested in the USA election for President and were wondering why it was not only the popular vote. One set of friends we met will meet us on our next Viking Cruise in January 2019. The included tours were always good and the extra tours purchased ahead of time were also fun and entertaining. Don't miss Salisbury - it was fun with scenes where The Sound of Music was filmed. We especially enjoyed the grand tour of Vienna - Waltz dance lessons, a fabulous lunch at a famous restaurant, and a walking/bus tour of Vienna with a spectacular guide. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks aboard "Modi". We enjoyed such beautiful scenery, interesting towns and cities and found that river cruising is a really "civilized" way to travel. We were so impressed by the crew and serving staff. They were very well trained and very professional. Our friends told us the food was going to be good and it certainly was, in fact it was excellent. The on shore excursions were well planned and informative. The onboard musical entertainment was very good and the "information talks" were very well done. Our cruise exceeded our expectations and we found that Viking is very good value. We chose this cruise to travel the Danube and Rhine rivers without packing and unpacking. Everything worked out well and we saw the many wonderful sights and learned the history of the medieval world. We thought we would step off the ship into the many medieval towns along this route, but found that we weren't always docked by the towns on the itinerary and were bused in to the town. That wasn't a problem, but not what we expected. The itinerary didn't list times in the ports so we were disappointed that some days were much shorter then we expected. For instance, the itinerary listed two days in Vienna, but we didn't arrive until the evening on the 1st day so we really only had one day. There were times where we were dropped off for an excursion before we arrived in town while the ship went along the river without us. I was a little uncomfortable not knowing exactly where the ship would be docked in case we wanted to find our way back to the ship on our own. We didn't experience any problems with this as we booked excursions through Viking and were kept very busy. All that said, we had a wonderful trip. The lectures were informative and the excursions were always what we had hoped for with great guides and good meals when included. We felt that we had learned a lot and had a great introduction to the palaces, churches and castles along the Danube, Main and Rhine. The staff on the ship were always warm and friendly and ready to answer any questions that we might have. The meals were good with a couple of meals exceptional. Read Less

This was our first river cruise (we have had several sea cruises, not with Viking). We had two reasons to try a river cruise. First, several friends recommended river cruises very highly. Second, my wife does not enjoy sea days, and there are no sea days on a river cruise. We specifically chose Viking because (1) friends recommended it, (2) because of the large number of ships Viking seems more flexible in handling emergent waterway conditions, and (3) a comparison with other lines convinced me that Viking was well priced. We had a deluxe stateroom (water level) and it was very nice. Through folks we met on the cruise we did visit other types of rooms. While a veranda room would have been great, we found our less expensive room to be quite nice and met all our needs. The beds are great, by the way. We looked forward to dining and being able to share time and a meal with new friends met on the boat. The food was always quite nice and the service staff was quite capable and responsive. One bit of advice - try both sides of the dining room. The service was much better on the port side than it was on the starboard side. Embarkation and debarkation were quite efficient and first-rate. We did a pre-stay extension in Budapest and a post-stay in Amsterdam. I highly recommend both. Both hotels were well located for visiting many attractions just by walking or a short tram ride. I probably should write-up our Budapest and Amsterdam visits as there are a lot of good things I could say about those cities. Would we do it again? Well, we did by $100 discount vouchers for our next trip . . . Read Less

Food was very good in general. There was a buffet at breakfast but you could also order off the menu. We rarely ate lunch on the ship as we were mostly out on tours. We loved dining al fresco at the bow but menu was more limited there. Ports were wonderful, we loved Rothenberg au de Rainer.. We took several “paid” tours and all were good. Staff was great especially the main bartender. My only complaint was constantly having to sign for the drinks. A minor irritant. Lots of friendly people and many Europeans on this cruise. Our ship was clean and comfortable. The entire crew from the Captain to dining room wait staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. It was obvious they truly enjoyed their jobs. The breakfasts, lunches and dinners were all outstanding. Our wait staff was so on top of things that often they arrived at the table with our "usual favorite drink" before we even asked. The onboard presentations about areas we were going to visit next were very informative and added a lot to your next day's excursion. All our excursions were lead by local guides that very knowledgeable and excited to show us their home towns. Our journey began in the charming city of Budapest. We thoroughly enjoyed being in the old city in the evening when the lights turned it into a magical scene. This was just the start of a beautiful trip. We had been warmly welcomed at the airport by the Viking staff. The same courtesy was extended on our entire voyage by all of Viking's people whether it was in the restaurants or elsewhere on the Modi. All of our questions were answered in a gracious manner. These people helped to make our tour a very pleasant experience. The charm of the European cities on The Grand European Tour made history come alive for us. We enjoyed visiting the well preserved palaces and churches that are characteristic of this area. Strolling through the cobblestone cities and sampling the pastries was fun. There were times when we sat on our balcony or went to the sun deck to view the beautiful scenery we were passing. The actual trip along the rivers was more enchanting than the advertisements we had seen on television that had served to entice us into taking our first river cruise. On board the ship we were entertained by both Viking musicians and those from local areas who came to share their music with us. We liked the apple strudel cooking activity. Our favorite was listening to and watching the glass blower create his art. Our visit to Amsterdam was an extended one. Here we found that Viking's service provided us with the transportation we needed to reach our hotel and days later to travel to the airport. Read Less

This was an area of Europe that we wanted to see. We stayed in Budapest on our own 5 days prior to the cruise and in Amsterdam on our own 5 days after the cruise which we would highly recommend. The cruise lines add on before or after the cruise was quite pricey and one could find as nice of accommodations at a lower price if one was willing to do a little work on their own or with their travel agent. We thought the ships docked right in the towns we stopped and one could walk off of the ship and into the town on your own. This happened in a few cities but many stops were in a industrial area of the city or quite a distance from the city and we had to be bused to the city and were bound by the return bus schedule not allowing for the free time we had hoped for. Local entertainment and speakers were very good and enjoyable. The staff was always cheerful and friendly and a pleasure to be with. The food was okay but not the quality we were expecting on a highly rated cruise line. Beer and wine during lunch and dinner was a nice feature. The included excursions were well planned out and the local guides were a nice bonus. Many of the optional tours were long and gave no time for one to relax and enjoy the cruise port. Overall a fun trip and the entire trip was enjoyable. Read Less

Our Program Director seemed to be everywhere at once and never seemed to sleep and he had boundless energy. We had one little glitch in Regensburg where we had to stay an extra day as the river was too high. In true Viking fashion, we were transported by Mercedes to the next port and provided lunch with beer and wine and our included excursion. They provided escorts and up to date information on what was happening. The ports and excursions provided a lot of historic background which made us able to understand some of current situations. At the end of the cruise, we took an extension to Prague. The included and optional excursions were fantastic. The only bad part was the Corinthia Hotel in Prague where the air conditioning did not work. Read Less

WE arrived in Amsterdam after an overnight flight from ATL-AMS on KLM. Great flight and crew with KLM. Viking met us at baggage claim and gave us VIP treatment to ship. (Our airfare was part of the cruise fare.) We had made the same cruise about 8-9 years ago Budapest to Amsterdam on Viking but this was in the opposite direction. (AMS-BUD). What a big improvement in the MODI over our previous Viking ship! While we had "basement" cabins both cruises, Modi was much improved with bigger cabin and bathroom. Really enjoyed the big screen TV and outside cameras of locks and scenery. Attention to service from the crew was outstanding! Especially in dining and bar areas. All made us feel special and the extra attention we haven't seen on the many ocean cruises we have made in the past. There was more transporting by bus than we had on previous cruise but we understand why since ship can't count on lock availability when needed since locks are so much busier now and cruise lines can not get scheduled lock times like they used to have. Viking has a fleet of dedicated Viking buses to handle us and does it well. Only complaint is we sometimes had long waits in towns to get back to ship but understand the logistics of getting the ship, passengers and buses together at the same time. It boils down to --river cruising has become very popular in Europe and there is just so much room for docking in town. The tours were very nice and well staffed with qualified guides. Headsets were great and needed by us older folks! Ports were well thought out and really interesting. Due to high water for passing under bridges, we were unable to make the wine tour of the Wachau Valley but do understand it was no fault of Viking. Only negative comment about the cruise. We were one of three couples on the cruise. WE all bought trip cancellation from Viking. One of our couples had a medical problem and had to return home early and 2 1/2 months later, they are still waiting for insurance co. to settle up with them for their airfare home and other parts of the cruise they were unable to complete. Viking was very helpful to them in arranging for airfare home at a more reasonable fare than the airlines offered. Also, folks at front desk on ship were very helpful in arranging transportation for the other two couples from BUD-Prague at the end of the cruise. Read Less

Transfers were excellent. * I did not drink wine or soft drink except for water, which is fine with me. However, we did not like dinner food, main courses, most of the time. Breakfasts were great. * We could not invite any family members and friends because they did not like the idea of paying for full price a year in advance, or when booking. * We like the idea of switching to different groups, which given cruisers a chance to get to know people from different countries. Sometimes it might turn out that people are from you home town/ state. * We are physically active, unfortunately walking desk was closed due to the weather. We wanted to see the rivers and cities on the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers. Everything was first class. We liked our cabin, #320. The ship is beautifully appointed in all public areas, as well as in our cabin. The service was always cheerful, friendly, and quick. All the meals were delicious and had many different items available. The meals emphasized local specialties such as goulash near Budapest and local style sausages in Germany. Local musicians came on board in several ports to play local music. The cruise director, Lubo, was awesome. He was always present making sure that all guests got where they needed to go and got back to the boat on time. Both the included and the extra cost shore excursions were very interesting and the local guides were very well informed. Highlights for us were the tour of the Jewish cemetery in Wertheim, where we learned so much about the Nazi era in Germany; the tour of the upper levels of Cologne Cathedral with its stunning views and fascinating history; and the tour of Koekenhof Garden near Amsterdam with its 7 million blooming bulbs. We met many interesting people on the boat and always had pleasant companions at meals. We were met at the airport upon arrival and were provided with transport to the airport for departure. This was our first European river cruise, though we had already enjoyed a river cruise in China and an ocean cruise in the Mediterranean, both with Viking, both excellent. The level of service on board was outstanding, even given that we had the Explorer's suite. The spacious accommodations were truly luxurious, and we particularly appreciated the perks that were included (fresh flowers, bottomless minibar, laundry service, 24-hour room service, Silver Spirits package, etc.). Food was excellent as usual, with a wide range of entrees at dinner and plenty of choice at buffet breakfasts and lunch. Table service was friendly and efficient. On board entertainment was varied and interesting; we had a hands-on lesson in strudel-making, a glass-blowing demonstration, numerous talks on local history and geography, and a German Night with local musicians and local food. The resident musicians were a talented singer/guitarist and an accomplished pianist, each with an impressively wide repertoire. Shore excursions were well-chosen and well-organized, with personable and knowledgeable local guides, while leaving enough free time to explore the various ports of call on one's own. Overall the cruise was a very enjoyable, interesting and rewarding experience. We are booked on a Viking ocean cruise to the West Indies in December. Read Less

We chose Viking’s Grand European cruise because I wanted to see the Robber Baron's' castles on the Rhine. We did that and so much more. Viking Modi traveled from Budapest to Amsterdam on three rivers and two canals. We passed through 68 locks and under a multitude of bridges. Our onshore excursions took us to castles and palaces, cathedrals and synagogues, marketplaces and cemeteries, cities and towns. Expert tour guides explained art and history. We ate marvelous food and drank excellent wines. We made friends and shared experiences with other mature, educated passengers who wanted to learn about the world and were more interested in education than entertainment. I climbed to the top of a cathedral, made weisswurst in Germany, attended a Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna, and saw masterpieces in Amsterdam's two world-class museums. Our journey was as busy and as relaxing as we wanted it to be. The crew treated us like royalty every mile of the way.
