This was our first river cruise and first visit to this part of the world. Viking took care of everything! It was a stress free trip since Viking organized everything and the wonderful staff were always there to answer questions, offer suggestions, etc. The food was great with plenty of choices and always a vegetarian option for my husband. We had a veranda stateroom and loved sitting on our little balcony with a coffee, watching the beautiful scenery go by. The included tours were excellent with local guides who always had a few personal stories to share. Buses were comfortable and had a bathroom if you were traveling more than 1/2 hour. There was plenty of time to explore on our own, shop, have a coffee and pastry, etc. We did a few optional tours and loved those as well... Nuremburg WWII tour, Rothenburg Ob De Tauber, Top of Cologne. We have recommended this trip to many friends. We liked the size of the ship and found it easy to get to know people since you saw them at meals, on tours, etc. Our room was nice, clean, bed comfortable. We enjoyed the onboard lectures and entertainment. The staff were all wonderful as well and many greeted us by name after a day or two. We will surely do another Viking Cruise in the future! We did the Grand European Tour with two other couples who are family. We wanted an adventure such as none of us had ever had and Viking met, and exceeded, what we were hoping for. We are experienced ocean cruisers but this was our first river cruise. We chose Viking based on the recommendation of other family members and we were anything but disappointed. The level of service is without flaw - they thought of everything and anticipated everything. Our cabin, while smaller than cabins on an ocean cruise, was so well laid out and appointed. Heated floor in the bathroom.... heaven. The excursions, that are included in every port, were simply outstanding. Our tour guides were all local and we learned so much about the history and culture of the ports that we visited. They were all wonderful. In some ports local talent and lecturers were brought on board in the evening, which was wonderful. The river cruise ships are lacking many of the "bells and whistles" of ocean cruise lines, such as shows, casinos, pesky photographers, games, etc. But there was a beautiful lounge on our ship with a great duo who played every night so it was a pleasant surprise to find that we could dance on the ship. The food was amazing - far superior to the ocean line that we normally travel. The presentation was gorgeous and there were always ample choices. In a word...... our Viking cruise was amazing. It was our first but it certainly won't be our last. Read Less

We picked this to see more in Europe without multiple hotel stays and heard good things from others who had taken the same cruise. We had taken ocean cruises with other companies before and had always wanted to take a river cruise. It turned out to be a relaxing way to see many cities and we also enjoyed the commentary about the sights we experienced while cruising. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip. The service overall was great, though we especially enjoyed our waiters' attention to our needs and their senses of humor. The cruise director was great and also very helpful along with the rest of the staff. The cabin was very quiet and comfortable and was cleaned multiple times each day. The tours were great except for the windmill tour which was too crowded. Several of the tour guides were superb. We highly recommend the European Grand Tour cruise. We plan to take a Viking ocean cruise next year. Read Less

We've cruised with Viking in the past, and they definitely don't disappoint. They deliver exactly what we want in a vacation. Their staff is professional and capable while remaining warm and accessible. By day two the bar staff had already memorized my favorite cocktail, the maître d knew where we liked to eat for dinner, and the wait staff brought me a special serving of the vegetables I love. We made sure to go on every shore excursion and booked multiple extra tours, because we're always so impressed with the quality of the guides. So many of the excursions give you access you wouldn't have without Viking. They also regularly have "visitors" on the ship that share about local culture in an intimate setting. We added time in Amsterdam with prior to our cruise, and we were very glad we did. Pick up at the airport was a delight, as was check in. There was always a Viking rep at the hotel when we needed one. We are many years younger than the average age of Vikings passengers, but that's never an issue. Its great to take a vacation where there are no children on board. We can do as much or as little as we want. Each time we cruise with Viking, we make new friends. We never miss having regular cruise ship offerings such as a casino, additional dining venues. We absolutely love that we don't ever have to dress for dinner. Viking isn't necessarily "fancy", but its always a quality experience. We are already planning our next Viking Cruise. We can't wait to see China with them. We highly recommend Viking. Read Less

We loved this trip and came home with so many wonderful memories (and a lot of souvenirs)! Viking took such good care of us--they just completely spoiled us! The ship was beautiful, service was awesome, the ports were fascinating, and the shore excursions were so interesting. We so enjoyed meeting and getting to know people from all over on the ship--some of which we hope to travel with again. We took the Viking Vili from Budapest to Amsterdam and added a few days in Prague before we started the cruise. I definitely would recommend this trip! Everything was done with excellence and each of the places we visited were unique and beautiful. The only drawback on the whole trip is that the internet connection as you travel down the river leaves something to be desired. Of course, we were on vacation and shouldn't worry about such things, but it did make it more challenging to keep in touch with family back home. Read Less

We wanted a long river cruise visiting many countries and cities. This cruise turned out to be the ideal length for us. It was simply magnificent. Cruising on rivers is so calm and relaxing. You hardly know you are moving. The layout of the ships makes everything easy to access and the crew couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. Our room was perfect in every way. Every port we stopped at was unique and fascinating. There is so much beauty in these charming river towns and cities, and between cities were charming and bucolic scenes along the way with the history of the region ever present. We would recommend Amsterdam extension at the beginning of the trip and the visit to Prague at the conclusion of the river journey. Both towns are fascinating and well worth spending some extra time in these locations. We had such a wonderful time, and this will be the first of many river cruises with Viking! Read Less

I had looked longingly at the Viking commercials on television, never dreaming this would be possible for us. I finally decided to investigate and just happened to reach the website at a time when 1/2 price cruises were being offered. I am of German heritage, and my father was in Germany after WWII, and this looked like a perfect trip. Amazingly, my husband agreed that this was a good idea! Our trip exceeded all expectations. Our trip down the Rhine and the Danube was a trip of a lifetime. The accommodations were first class Even though we had a standard stateroom, with no balcony, wee didn't miss a thing. Everything was comfortable and perfect. Our cabin attendant saw to our every need. The Viking Villi Program Director Stein was an amazingly energetic and polished individual who provided expert preparation for our excursions prior to our stop in every port. His recommendations for places to go and things to try and see were always on point. We saw sights that we had only ever seen in books or on film, and could hardly believe that we were experiencing these wonderful places and people in person. Max the Chef presented a wide variety of fabulous regional cuisine Everything included locally fresh produce and ingredients that were loaded at each port. There were numerous choices to satisfy every palate. I can't say enough about the superlative quality of every aspect of our trip. All members of the crew were ready and willing to do anything required to meet our every need. Of all the magical aspects of the trip, I'd have to say that the exemplary service of every crew member was the single characteristic that puts Viking at the top of the list of cruise lines. And just so you know how every much we enjoyed our Viking experience, you probably need to know that we couldn't wait to book another one! We're going to Italy in May 2018!. Read Less

My wife and I decided to take a snap shot of central Europe, starting two days early in Amsterdam and finishing four days late with prague after Budapest. Our desire was to not have to do any of the work /reservations, which Viking did nicely for us. The crew knew our names after the first day, the food was scrumptious, and the walking tours were informative and made sure you walked off the meals. We enjoyed the evening entertainment, cocktails, snacks and social time with newly discovered friends. The format for adding excursions was easy to do before the cruise, and adjusting on board was super simple. Stein had a couple of historical lectures, which we enjoyed greatly. By day two, Herald our bartender knew what drinks to get my party, and the wait staff were perfect, doting on us like we were special. Melena was an absolute jewel for housekeeping, prompting my wife to comment that she had never had a bathroom cleaned multiple times a day. We all felt special . It couldn't have been better and I discovered I like being pampered. Read Less

We decided on Viking Cruise Line after reading their brochures. Everything was first class on this cruise - rooms, housekeeping, dinners, wait staff, tours and tour guides, and activities. At dinner we always tried to get a table in Ron and Rico's section because they were so nice and attentive to every detail. The food was great and you had many options to choose from. Most of our tour guides were excellent and very personable. Overall, they were all very good and very informative. All the tours were very well organized. We joined all the included tours, but there were other options if you wanted to do more. Housekeeping was excellent. It seemed like every time you left the room and came back, you could tell she had been there freshening up. We enjoyed the on board entertainment and activities, and even if we didn't join in, we watched on the lounge camera. I never imagined the scenery would be so beautiful along the rivers! WE just returned home from our first river cruise: 2 weeks Grand European Cruise with Viking was outstanding. We loved every minute. Relaxing, yet lots of history to see and learn about. I cannot say enough about the crew: they were the best we have ever cruised with (previously 5 ocean cruises). 186 people are taken care of by 50 crew. That does not count the numbers of Viking employees or associates on land that made our land excursions so seamless and interesting. They definitely have the logistics down pat!! The cruise director was terrific and I would go anywhere with him again. The food was not fabulous, and I only gained 1 pound, but we chose to do as much walking as we could which was the only exercise we could get. Longships are limited in size by the lock systems on the European rivers, and by the shallow rivers we traveled on. Hence the lack of an exercise room. Since we booked air through Viking, we had greeters at our arrival airport, at the hotel of our pre-extension in Amsterdam, at the Budapest airport. WE felt special that Viking was able to make our vacation worry free. Read Less

We had heard a lot of good things about Viking River Cruises and decided to take a cruise ourselves to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We decided on the Viking Grand European Tour and asked three other couples to join us. From the time we stepped off the plane in Prague, for our pre-cruise tour, to the drop off at the airport after our post-cruise tour of Amsterdam, we had a very wonderful time. We must say, however, the accommodations in Prague, at the Corinthia Hotel were a lot nicer than the accommodations at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Amsterdam. After the Corinthia Hotel the Radisson Blu Hotel was a moderate to big let down. In addition we felt the Viking staff at the Corinthia were a lot more accommodating than the crew at the Radisson Blu. We also felt the tour of the city of Amsterdam should have been postponed to later in the day because of really heavy rain. Instead the tour went on and most everyone got soaked. We left the tour after 20 minutes and went back to the hotel to dry out. The cruise itself, the cruise director, the other officers and the rest of the ships crew, were all quite excellent. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful. Even the young man assigned to our cabin, although new and not yet up to par, was very helpful and did his best. Our cabin itself was large enough and in excellent condition. A problem with the TV in our cabin and the entire ship was our only complaint. EXCELLENT, that is only word we can think of to describe the dining experience aboard the ship. EXCELLENT. The staff in the dining room as well as the lounge and the Aquavit Terrace were as near perfect as one can expect. The entertainment was just what we had hoped it would be; a good piano player and an equally good singer. In addition some very nice surprises from the crew. The cruise director 'Joey' was nothing short of excellent and entertained us with everything from the weather reports to commentary while sailing through the Wachau Valley. The area we thought could use some improvement was the ports-of-call and the shore excursions. In particular Nuremberg comes to mind. As history buffs we very much looked forward to a tour of Nuremberg and opted for the Nuremberg World War II Tour. In our opinion the tour was a waste of money and time. Our arrival date in Nuremberg was the same day as the huge Rock im Park rock music festival held ANNUALLY in Nuremberg. Because of the festival we had traffic delays and we could not see Zeppelin Field. The festival is an ANNUAL event and Viking should not have sold that tour on the same day knowing the festival would be there. And as far as Courtroom 600 is concerned all we say is, is that all there is? In addition because we took the optional tour we missed the included tour of the city of Nuremberg. We also opted for the Salzburg Highlights tour which was promoted as a 9 1/2 hour tour. What is not in your literature is, there is more than 4 hours travel time to get to Salzburg and an equal amount of time needed to get back to the ship. Also, we could have done without the luncheon with a fixed menu and the "Sound of Music" entertainment. Additionally, we missed the walking tour of Passau. We think the Cologne Walking Tour should have included a lot more than Cologne Cathedral. It was just a walk around the cathedral. Aside from the problems with the tours we had an overall excellent time. We will say, however, that for future cruises we will most likely book our optional tours on board ship and not before the cruise. We think getting to speak with the Cruise Director and other personnel on board we can get a much better idea of what a tour will entail. Read Less

Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna in the evening at the palace had to be the climax of the trip. the usher asked us if we were from Viking and we were escorted to seats on the stage with the orchestra. shopping the Christmas markets was fantastic. problem being how to pack it all and bring home. It was really nice to know we would be met at the airport by Viking representatives and to be taken back to the airport by them. We tell everyone that we've had three great experiences on Viking River Cruises in Europe. We traveled on the Viking Vili for the Grand European Cruise in October 2016. (Our previous trips were on sister ships for the Rhine River Cruise and the one now called Lyon & Provence. Viking does everything right, with full attention to the guest experience. Viking continues to tweak itineraries based on customer feedback, as evidenced by the slight variations in cruise offerings every year. We enjoy the stylish interior of the Viking long ships, in both public and private spaces. The ship's crew is a model of international cooperation. The food is extraordinary - delicious offerings for three meals every day and sometimes even special treats like strudel making (& tasting) and Viennese coffee to complement the local cuisine. they are even prepared to meet special dietary requirements (I'm gluten free). We especially appreciate the daily briefing each evening just before dinner, at which we learn about tomorrow's destination and itinerary. There are also enrichment programs such as a demonstration of glass blowing or chamber music. Highly recommended. Read Less

We choose this cruise after having many friends recommend a river cruise through Europe. We planned this trip for a number of years with college roommates, one of whom who had never traveled through Europe. The idea of unpacking only once during a long trip was especially appealing to me and my husband. We were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff and crew, especially our cruise director Terry Turnbull. One day, Executive Chef Roderick Serrano even prepared a special pork belly adobo for our table of six, after our maitre-d overheard us speaking about it to guest from Albuquerque, New Mexico. What a special treat! I submitted the photo of the adobo to the Honolulu Star Advertiser that ran the story and a recipe that I replicated. We enjoyed all meals, all evening programs, all tours and the very comfortable Viking accommodations. Learning about the European cities was fascinating and walking the same streets and seeing the beautiful buildings of historical lore was enchanting. My friends from Hawaii admit, shopping for Christmas ornaments was exciting. As a culinary teacher, I enjoyed sampling all foods. I purchased spices, mustards, chocolates and cookies to stuff into my luggage for the long trip home to Hawaii. Read Less

My wife had always wanted to go on a cruise with me but in my opinion the big cruise ships held no magic. Sailing along rivers and looking at castles was what I wanted so we booked the Grand European Tour on the Viking Villi. I was impressed with the boat and our room, #308, a Veranda Suite. The food was excellent, lots of choices and sufficient quantity to keep a grown man full. Staff were happy and efficient, taking care of any requests promptly. Our room steward, Dousdan, handled several odd requests quickly and with humor. Of the serving staff, Bogomil, was our favorite and his exclamation of "Excellent Choice" became a common line among our little group. A few minor schedule flubs were handled quickly by the Captain and crew, causing little or no delay in our trip. The Tour Director, Terry, was a congenial little Brit. and kept things interesting and fun. My wife and I were very pleased with the trip and would travel again with Viking. Read Less

We had friends who raved about their experience with Viking. We had never been to Germany or Amsterdam and this sounded like the perfect way to travel. Unpacking only once and boarding a cruise to enjoy the landscape of European towns, vineyards and castles while cruising the Danube, Main and Rhine was one of the best vacations we have taken. I usually plan all of our travel details in depth and this time Viking was in charge. What a fantastic job! From the very beginning of making our plans to arriving at each stop with fantastic local guides, Viking was absolutely amazing. We were so spoiled. The ship was spotless and our room had a fantastic attendant. The tour director was energetic and so much fun. We ate dinner nightly with friends on the Aquivit served by a dedicated staff who made our evenings special. We were informed about the next days activities the night before via a pamphlet. The places it stopped were all of interest to us and Viking has enough ships to be able to deal with lock problems and water level issues. Going with Viking kept our cruise a cruise instead of a tour bus trip this feature alone makes them a first consideration and worth any premium they may charge above another cruise company. On both ships we were on the service was impeccable both on board ship and during the shore excursions. The housekeepers cleaned and freshened our room several times a day restocking the towels and water every time. Every evening there was an on board form of entertainment varying for musical performances to glass blowing demonstrations. The meals were especially good and prepared to each of our preferences. The breakfast was a buffet or a breakfast cooked to our preference. The kitchen was the cleanest commercial kitchen I have ever seen. Read Less

We wanted to do a European river cruise for years, and after asking around, decided to go with Viking River Cruises. We've taken to ocean cruises on Carnival (Mexico Pacific coast and Alaska to Vancouver BC, and this was our first river cruise. We vastly prefer the Viking experience. The smaller ship doesn't skimp at all in amenities, at least the kind we look for. As their ads say, no swimming pools or drinks with umbrellas. We had local guides for every stop, and the individual audio devices ensure you can hear the narrative just fine without the guide shouting. We enjoyed a mix of included and optional tours, augmented by some supplementary helps graciously suggested by our Concierge. For example, by wife had some temporary difficulty walking distances, so our Concierge suggested a "rickshaw" tour of Salzburg, which my wife wouldn't have been able to handle otherwise. The extra cost was very reasonable and well worth it. We were "five star" pleased with the accommodations, the outstanding food, the warm and gracious service and the many things included in the price. We opted for the veranda room (not the French veranda) and found it to be an excellent balance between price and comfort. At the end of the river portion, we took the optional three days in Prague. This was another example of Viking's excellent service. Most tour companies would have put us on a chartered bus, said goodbye at the ship, and then had someone at the hotel in Prague to greet us. With Viking, we had a Viking guide with us on the whole trip to Prague, plus a dedicated driver for their transfers between Budapest and Prague. This really helped out with the rest stops and especially during the lunch stop, since the menu was all in Czech and the English of the staff was not the best. Arriving in Prague, we were competently turned over to a full time resident staff in the hotel that gave us the same attentive service as on the ship. We're already looking forward to our next trip with Viking, which will be a Christmas markets tour next year. Read Less

Loved it! The website and the information package that was sent to us was very useful in helping us plan our trip. We spent 5 days in Amsterdam before the trip and fell in love with the city. Embarkation went smoothly once we figured out exactly where to find the ship. The ship was beautiful and our stateroom was fantastic and had all the amenities we could possibly want. Food and drink were excellent and plentiful and was a great way to meet people. On board entertainment was great and included a number of games, a glass blowing demonstration, an opera concert, and several very interesting lectures. The shore excursions were extremely well organized and were very informative and lots of fun (I would highly recommend the beer tasting extra excursion in Koln). The electronic "Quiet Vox" devices that were used during the excursions enabled the guides to communicate through the earphones without the guide having to shout to be heard by all. The entire crew was outstanding and often went above and beyond to help in any way they could. I would definitely cruise with Viking again! Read Less

I looked at a number of river cruise lines and decided Viking was the best for what I needed. I'd taken a Viking Rhine Getaway two years ago and loved it so much, I was eager to experience another river cruise. I wanted one that was longer so chose the 15 day Grand European on the Viking Vili. I also did the pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The ship was clean and the room, although small, was comfortable with plenty of storage. Ship staff were always quick to help. The guides in each port either lived in that city permanently or, in some cases, temporarily (students), but they were all topnotch. And the tours in each port were included in the price. In some cities, optional tours were offered at an additional cost. I did only a few optional tours, but they were well worth the cost. We saw Cologne, Vienna, and Budapest, and a number of small cities that were every bit as interesting as the large ones. I was in a cabin on the lowest deck (the lowest cost) and by myself since my traveling companion became ill at the last minute. I would think two people would be tripping over each other at times, though, because the cabin was quite small. When we weren't in port, I spent a lot of my leisure time either on the top deck, in the lounge, or on the Aquavit Terrace. The ship also had a small library with comfortable chairs and two internet stations you could use at no charge. The wifi was free. I enjoyed sitting on the sun deck and viewing the vineyards, castles, and other interesting sites while sipping a refreshing beverage. When the sun deck had to be closed because of low bridges, the Aquavit Terrace was available. We could also dine on the Aquavit Terrace and did for a few lunches, but we always ate dinner in the restaurant since one of the great things about river cruising is the interesting people you meet and become friendly with. River cruise ships don't have entertainment like ocean cruisers, but there were several evenings we were entertained with small musical groups and there were trivia games. During the day there were some interesting lectures and one day the best and most entertaining glass blower I've ever seen. There were also several tea times and at least one cooking demonstration. A quick mention of the pre-cruise experience in Amsterdam which was also great. We stayed in a centrally-located hotel within easy walking distance of almost everything I wanted to see (I did take public transportation, very easy to use, to the Rijksmuseum). A tour of Amsterdam was included with the pre-cruise cost. I could go on and on. I enjoyed everything about the trip. Read Less

Love the small ship and many of the staff knew our name after the first few days. After the first day, when we went to pick up our shore pass cards, from the front desk, (we can't remember her name) would always greet us with, "Hello Mr & Mrs Wxxxxx from stateroom 209". That is a great way to start each day. We were not just a number with someone asking for our number. This was on our 40th Anniversary and Viking treated well with several people signing to us at Dinner, and flowers and towel swans in our stateroom. The Head Chef came and visited with us that night and later in the cruise also. We have cruised on 9 cruises and 4 different cruise lines before this cruise and find Viking the BEST. Viking treated us so good. Bottle of water each time we go ashore, welcome back snack or such. We also loved the one free tour each day where as we did not have to pay for every tour. We did purchase a few of the optional tours, and were glad they did not conflict with the free tour for time. The Tour Guides were all great. We are planning to be some of the first to cruise on the Mississippi River in the USA, with Viking. Read Less
