Was very excited to do this river cruise. The staff were very friendly and helpful. When I booked it, assured family member's life threatening food allergy was not a problem and she would be safe. When boarded, the cruise manager, the house manager, the chef and the wait staff all assured us they were aware of the serious allergy and the issues of cross contamination, especially since their kitchen is small and the chef wipes his hands on his apron between dishes. Half way through the cruise, they prepared a meal with the allergen. She was offered an appetizer which she was assured was safe but she did not know was prepared at the same time as the other dish. Within minutes she went into anaphylaxis, had to use 2 EPI pens and the boat pulled over to meet an ambulance. She was treated in a local ER and then returned to the boat. The rest of the trip was ruined. She missed many events and just did not feel good. She ate food she brought with her from that point on. The whole issue could easily have been avoided as they did not have to have include that dish on the menu. They offer both included and "optional" tours during the journey. The optional are guided tours at a price. A couple of the guides were excellent and really informative. The rest were marginal. Many of the tours were places we could have done on our own at a 1/10 of the cost. There was a pressure to tip the guides, the bus drivers and big,big pressure to tip the staff at the end of the trip. Made to change boats the last 3 days due to "maintenance" needs, new staff seemed unhappy and never stopped cleaning the public areas, so we were constantly having to navigate around the vacuums and brooms. Both boats had strange little bed pillows we all made constant jokes about. On the 2nd boat, when first checked in, had to have the bed linens changed 2X due to hair on the sheets and the bath floor mopped as so dirty. The best part of the trip was meeting some delightful other passengers. Loved being on the river, seeing the castles and next time will explore renting a private barge instead. Read Less

Although this was not our first river cruise it was the first time we went with a Viking river cruise. Overall we would highly recommend Viking based the the quality of the entire experience and the great price. We the chose this Grande European trip because of all the countries we could see, the beautiful cities and the opportunity to meet some wonderful people. We were not disappointed. Firstly booking our trip directly through Viking went very well with a most helpful Viking representative. Viking did an outstanding job of providing a precruise package for our family. We did a pre cruise stay in Amsterdam and post cruise stay in Prague which we would highly recommend if you have that opportunity. We were met by a very friendly and most helpful Viking representative when we arrived at the Amsterdam airport. The transfer to our hotel went very well. The Viking hotel host was most helpful answering any inquiries. The transfer from our hotel to the ship and embarkation was well organized. The ship crew and our host Sam were exceptional throughout the entire trip. Our cabin was very good and the cleaning staff were friendly and did an outstanding job. Meals throughout the day and evening were very good. We had an opportunity to meet with the captain and visit the bridge which was very informative. The shore excursions were excellent and well organized. The excursion hosts were terrific; very knowledgeable and friendly. Leaving the ship was difficult because of the excellent job done by Viking and the many new friends met. The post cruise trip to Prague went very well and the stay there was wonderful. We would definitely go on another Viking river cruise based on experiences with them. Read Less

We tell everyone that we've had three great experiences on Viking River Cruises in Europe. We traveled on the Viking Vili for the Grand European Cruise in October 2016. (Our previous trips were on sister ships for the Rhine River Cruise and the one now called Lyon & Provence. Viking does everything right, with full attention to the guest experience. Viking continues to tweak itineraries based on customer feedback, as evidenced by the slight variations in cruise offerings every year. We enjoy the stylish interior of the Viking long ships, in both public and private spaces. The ship's crew is a model of international cooperation. The food is extraordinary - delicious offerings for three meals every day and sometimes even special treats like strudel making (& tasting) and Viennese coffee to complement the local cuisine. they are even prepared to meet special dietary requirements (I'm gluten free). We especially appreciate the daily briefing each evening just before dinner, at which we learn about tomorrow's destination and itinerary. There are also enrichment programs such as a demonstration of glass blowing or chamber music. Highly recommended. Read Less

We choose this cruise after having many friends recommend a river cruise through Europe. We planned this trip for a number of years with college roommates, one of whom who had never traveled through Europe. The idea of unpacking only once during a long trip was especially appealing to me and my husband. We were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff and crew, especially our cruise director Terry Turnbull. One day, Executive Chef Roderick Serrano even prepared a special pork belly adobo for our table of six, after our maitre-d overheard us speaking about it to guest from Albuquerque, New Mexico. What a special treat! I submitted the photo of the adobo to the Honolulu Star Advertiser that ran the story and a recipe that I replicated. We enjoyed all meals, all evening programs, all tours and the very comfortable Viking accommodations. Learning about the European cities was fascinating and walking the same streets and seeing the beautiful buildings of historical lore was enchanting. My friends from Hawaii admit, shopping for Christmas ornaments was exciting. As a culinary teacher, I enjoyed sampling all foods. I purchased spices, mustards, chocolates and cookies to stuff into my luggage for the long trip home to Hawaii. Read Less

My wife had always wanted to go on a cruise with me but in my opinion the big cruise ships held no magic. Sailing along rivers and looking at castles was what I wanted so we booked the Grand European Tour on the Viking Villi. I was impressed with the boat and our room, #308, a Veranda Suite. The food was excellent, lots of choices and sufficient quantity to keep a grown man full. Staff were happy and efficient, taking care of any requests promptly. Our room steward, Dousdan, handled several odd requests quickly and with humor. Of the serving staff, Bogomil, was our favorite and his exclamation of "Excellent Choice" became a common line among our little group. A few minor schedule flubs were handled quickly by the Captain and crew, causing little or no delay in our trip. The Tour Director, Terry, was a congenial little Brit. and kept things interesting and fun. My wife and I were very pleased with the trip and would travel again with Viking. Read Less

We had friends who raved about their experience with Viking. We had never been to Germany or Amsterdam and this sounded like the perfect way to travel. Unpacking only once and boarding a cruise to enjoy the landscape of European towns, vineyards and castles while cruising the Danube, Main and Rhine was one of the best vacations we have taken. I usually plan all of our travel details in depth and this time Viking was in charge. What a fantastic job! From the very beginning of making our plans to arriving at each stop with fantastic local guides, Viking was absolutely amazing. We were so spoiled. The ship was spotless and our room had a fantastic attendant. The tour director was energetic and so much fun. We ate dinner nightly with friends on the Aquivit served by a dedicated staff who made our evenings special. We were informed about the next days activities the night before via a pamphlet. It was helpful for planning and also when I was organizing pictures once home. We are looking forward to another Viking river cruise. Read Less

The places it stopped were all of interest to us and Viking has enough ships to be able to deal with lock problems and water level issues. Going with Viking kept our cruise a cruise instead of a tour bus trip this feature alone makes them a first consideration and worth any premium they may charge above another cruise company. On both ships we were on the service was impeccable both on board ship and during the shore excursions. The housekeepers cleaned and freshened our room several times a day restocking the towels and water every time. Every evening there was an on board form of entertainment varying for musical performances to glass blowing demonstrations. The meals were especially good and prepared to each of our preferences. The breakfast was a buffet or a breakfast cooked to our preference. The kitchen was the cleanest commercial kitchen I have ever seen. Read Less

Loved the smaller passenger number (190) and the European ports of call from Budapest to Vienna, then through Germany to Amsterdam. Wonderful stateroom with veranda was very comfortable. Service was outstanding, as well as food. Staff was exceptional, professional and knowledgeable. Excursions included in fare were very informational and conducted by local guides (loved Marcus, the tour guide in Cologne!). Optional tours were excellent as well- we very much appreciated the WWII tour in Nuremberg and the Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna. Viking team made embarkation and disembarkation as easy as possible. We were nervous landing in Budapest, but Viking representatives quickly put us at ease. The motor coaches for transfers and tours were much more comfortable than we expected. The entire trip simply exceeded our expectations. Our favorite meals were evening dinners on Aquavit deck, with Marianna and Dragos taking exceptional care of us. We'd love to go back to the Vili and repeat the trip! Read Less

We boarded our ship in Budapest. The only downside was that our first full day what's a national holiday which was the equivalent of the forth of July and everything was closed as a result. We did get an unexpected cruise along the river. It was a clear evening and the lights along the shore were spectacular. The service, food and included tours were outstanding! My wife and I loved them. The history and the shore excursion were done by local tour guides that were very knowledgeable. The menus all always have something for everyone. The food was well prepared with a good presentation. The food and the wines are tailored to the region that you are cruising through. This was our first river cruise so we weren't quite sure what to expect. There were no children on board, which to my wife and I was a plus since we wanted a quiet relaxing cruise. We were on the Viking Vili and the staff and cruise director were very engaged with the passengers wants and needs. Read Less

We wanted to do a European river cruise for years, and after asking around, decided to go with Viking River Cruises. We've taken to ocean cruises on Carnival (Mexico Pacific coast and Alaska to Vancouver BC, and this was our first river cruise. We vastly prefer the Viking experience. The smaller ship doesn't skimp at all in amenities, at least the kind we look for. As their ads say, no swimming pools or drinks with umbrellas. We had local guides for every stop, and the individual audio devices ensure you can hear the narrative just fine without the guide shouting. We enjoyed a mix of included and optional tours, augmented by some supplementary helps graciously suggested by our Concierge. For example, by wife had some temporary difficulty walking distances, so our Concierge suggested a "rickshaw" tour of Salzburg, which my wife wouldn't have been able to handle otherwise. The extra cost was very reasonable and well worth it. We were "five star" pleased with the accommodations, the outstanding food, the warm and gracious service and the many things included in the price. We opted for the veranda room (not the French veranda) and found it to be an excellent balance between price and comfort. At the end of the river portion, we took the optional three days in Prague. This was another example of Viking's excellent service. Most tour companies would have put us on a chartered bus, said goodbye at the ship, and then had someone at the hotel in Prague to greet us. With Viking, we had a Viking guide with us on the whole trip to Prague, plus a dedicated driver for their transfers between Budapest and Prague. This really helped out with the rest stops and especially during the lunch stop, since the menu was all in Czech and the English of the staff was not the best. Arriving in Prague, we were competently turned over to a full time resident staff in the hotel that gave us the same attentive service as on the ship. We're already looking forward to our next trip with Viking, which will be a Christmas markets tour next year. Read Less

Booked this cruise because the promotion advertising looked like it was what we wanted and the sailing date suited. Reserved a two room veranda suite on deck 3, these cabins are directly under the walking/ running track on the top deck which results in overhead noise even though it is supposed to be a walking track that is restricted 8pm to 8am. The other disappointment was that the large window ( 2m x 2m) double glazed window was shattered this we were told happened on the previous cruise and they had been in touch with maintenance to make repairs further down the river, an apology and a bottle wine was given but the window was never repaired. The cabin steward was excellent as was the concierge who booked special city tours for us. The food was a big disappointment, at times it was over cooked, bland and vegetables were only served if you ordered the steak which was in my opinion the best selection on the menu. The waiters in the dining room were not skilled in their service, I would suggest they go and wait tables on a Princess Cruise to see how it down correctly. Dinners were not reminded to use the hand on entering the dinning room. The smorgasbord served in " Aquavit " lounge had a better selection at lunchtime than the dinning room, I would liked to have seen "sneeze covers" on the food, that might explain why a large number of passengers appeared and sound like they had a cold. Would I cruise with Viking again? Definitely not. Read Less

Viking ran an incredible deal $2499 for 14-day Grand European River Cruise. I dreamed of this trip for YEARS but didn't have anyone to be my roommate. This Memorial Weekend special 2016 was so cheap that I called Viking and spoke to agent and told her I wanted to pay an additional $2499 for the ghost person for single occupancy and was willing to pay $5000 to have solo cabin. She snapped "NO! This promotion is for double occupancy only! For you to have a cabin yourself you have to pay $9000!" I am a travel beginner, I didn't know any better but to believe her. So, I ran an ad in Travel MeetUps for a NON-snoring roommate. Too much detail to type here, but I got railroaded by another Viking agent to room with a lady I never heard of, who saw my MeetUp post, and called Viking to call me with her on the line. She lied to me about snoring and after we paid, she admitted she had sleep apnea but didn't qualify for the C-PAP machine. She SNORED LIKE A HARLEY! On top of that, she was soooo critical, condescending, and judgmental of little details of my rooming with her too numerous to list, like where I hung my towel. She insisted on turning AC to 68 which gave me a bad cold and asthma for the rest of my trip and 2 weeks after (I extended it), even tho I told her many times, she snuck it up, and told me room service did it. But Room service said they NEVER touch passenger's AC settings. She screamed at me just because I asked her how her tour was, because I "interrupted her movie and she was writing an email at the same time", when I was just trying to be nice and acknowledging her when I came in. IT GOT SO I WAS AFRAID TO GO TO MY CABIN!!! On the 10th day, Harley snored so loud that I told the concierge that I was thinking about bailing ship and forfeiting the rest of the cruise even tho the best excursions I already paid for, were yet to come, but I didn't know how to get from where the ship was, to Budapest where I had extended stay reservations. Everyone said the ship was full, but Hotel Manager offered me my own cabin for an additional 100 Euros a night (400 Euros). I wish I had done that sooner, as 100 euros/night extra was still cheaper than $5000 I was willing to pay, but Viking agent didn't let me. My anger against Viking telling me I had to pay $9000 to have my own cabin MADE ME CHEATED, increased exponentially, when later, ALL travel agents told me you never pay more than double. One even posed as consumer and while I was holding, she called a Viking agent, said she wanted to go on same cruise solo, and agent entered "1 person", and computer came back with same price as the double occupancy price, and it was NOT $9000. I felt even MORE CHEATED and DUPED when on the ship, I met a 92 year old man who had a cabin a few doors down the hall from mine (same price level) to himself for which he said he paid $5000. "How did you do that?", I asked, "Viking told me I had to pay $9000". He said "I don't know, my travel agent handled it for me". So here was what Travel agents told me, that you never pay more than double, was true. When I got home, I filed a complaint with Viking about being told I had to pay $9000. Viking backed what the first Viking booking agent told me, and refused to acknowledge fault or look into the 92 year old man. Viking offered me only $500 “Good Will” credit for a future booking within 12 months. I did not accept it because I felt Viking was tossing me “crumbs”, and then I would be obligated to using Viking, AGAIN. People later told me I should have hung up and called again to get another agent, but I was very inexperienced at traveling, and that first agent was SOOO ADAMANT and forceful in her voice "NO, FOR YOU TO HAVE A CABIN TO YOURSELF, YOU HAVE TO PAY $9000!", I did not question further. Though Viking did not pick my roommate for me, I ended up with “cruel and condescending Harley” ONLY because that first booking agent was so adamant that I had to pay $9000 for solo. Agent would not allow me to pay 2 x $2499 for solo cabin even tho I tried to convince her Viking would be saving money, cos they do not have to pay for ghost’s food, and excursions, but they still got the full fare. My overall trip “1 star – Awful” is due to the horrible roommate I was forced to travel with, because of what she told me about having to pay $9000 instead of $5000 to have a solo room. I feel "cheated" . As for the cruise itself, I am a Foodie and the food was pretty good. They served some of my favorite dishes, such as osso bucco and did a great job with that. The steaks were pretty good, but all at my tables agreed, the cook overcooked the fish. We had chilean sea bass and swordfish, two of my faves, but they were overcooked. Overcooked fish is the reason for 4 stars vs 5 stars. I ate TWO different main dishes, most times. Most of the tour guides for the included tours were 4+, except one had strong B.O., that I felt I had to hold my breath all the time, following him, even outdoors. The highlight of the entire cruise, was something that was at whim, and not a planned event. The Concierge had done this before, so she was offering to do it for our cruise. She organized a bike rental outfit to provide decent bikes for about $22, and we biked 31 kilometers from one town to another, along the River, to meet the ship. We rode through very small towns and many grape orchards, and even cemetaries. Took us about 4 hours. I felt that the Program Director was somewhat overly effusive (kinda fake). He was only age 26. But I give 5 stars to the Concierge and the Hotel Manager, because they found a way to give me my own cabin the last 4 nights, even tho I had to pay 400 euros for the 4 remaining nights. I felt the two most beautiful things I saw on my Viking Grand European Tour was oddly, the ship itself (1 year old) AND one of the buses we took to Regansburg. The grace of the longship floating through the water like a swan, and the design of the roof and windows on that white bus (the modern "lines") with the Viking ship on the side of the bus, were soooo beautiful to me. My ratings above 1 star are when I did not have to be with Harley. I have very bad feelings when I think about Viking saying I have to pay $4000 ABOVE the cost of paying for 2 people. My memories of my trip feel sad, rather than good memories. Read Less

Loved it! The website and the information package that was sent to us was very useful in helping us plan our trip. We spent 5 days in Amsterdam before the trip and fell in love with the city. Embarkation went smoothly once we figured out exactly where to find the ship. The ship was beautiful and our stateroom was fantastic and had all the amenities we could possibly want. Food and drink were excellent and plentiful and was a great way to meet people. On board entertainment was great and included a number of games, a glass blowing demonstration, an opera concert, and several very interesting lectures. The shore excursions were extremely well organized and were very informative and lots of fun (I would highly recommend the beer tasting extra excursion in Koln). The electronic "Quiet Vox" devices that were used during the excursions enabled the guides to communicate through the earphones without the guide having to shout to be heard by all. The entire crew was outstanding and often went above and beyond to help in any way they could. I would definitely cruise with Viking again! Read Less

I looked at a number of river cruise lines and decided Viking was the best for what I needed. I'd taken a Viking Rhine Getaway two years ago and loved it so much, I was eager to experience another river cruise. I wanted one that was longer so chose the 15 day Grand European on the Viking Vili. I also did the pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The ship was clean and the room, although small, was comfortable with plenty of storage. Ship staff were always quick to help. The guides in each port either lived in that city permanently or, in some cases, temporarily (students), but they were all topnotch. And the tours in each port were included in the price. In some cities, optional tours were offered at an additional cost. I did only a few optional tours, but they were well worth the cost. We saw Cologne, Vienna, and Budapest, and a number of small cities that were every bit as interesting as the large ones. I was in a cabin on the lowest deck (the lowest cost) and by myself since my traveling companion became ill at the last minute. I would think two people would be tripping over each other at times, though, because the cabin was quite small. When we weren't in port, I spent a lot of my leisure time either on the top deck, in the lounge, or on the Aquavit Terrace. The ship also had a small library with comfortable chairs and two internet stations you could use at no charge. The wifi was free. I enjoyed sitting on the sun deck and viewing the vineyards, castles, and other interesting sites while sipping a refreshing beverage. When the sun deck had to be closed because of low bridges, the Aquavit Terrace was available. We could also dine on the Aquavit Terrace and did for a few lunches, but we always ate dinner in the restaurant since one of the great things about river cruising is the interesting people you meet and become friendly with. River cruise ships don't have entertainment like ocean cruisers, but there were several evenings we were entertained with small musical groups and there were trivia games. During the day there were some interesting lectures and one day the best and most entertaining glass blower I've ever seen. There were also several tea times and at least one cooking demonstration. A quick mention of the pre-cruise experience in Amsterdam which was also great. We stayed in a centrally-located hotel within easy walking distance of almost everything I wanted to see (I did take public transportation, very easy to use, to the Rijksmuseum). A tour of Amsterdam was included with the pre-cruise cost. I could go on and on. I enjoyed everything about the trip. Read Less

Love the small ship and many of the staff knew our name after the first few days. After the first day, when we went to pick up our shore pass cards, from the front desk, (we can't remember her name) would always greet us with, "Hello Mr & Mrs Wxxxxx from stateroom 209". That is a great way to start each day. We were not just a number with someone asking for our number. This was on our 40th Anniversary and Viking treated well with several people signing to us at Dinner, and flowers and towel swans in our stateroom. The Head Chef came and visited with us that night and later in the cruise also. We have cruised on 9 cruises and 4 different cruise lines before this cruise and find Viking the BEST. Viking treated us so good. Bottle of water each time we go ashore, welcome back snack or such. We also loved the one free tour each day where as we did not have to pay for every tour. Looking for a more upscale experience, we listened to Viking's marketing materials. What they didn't tell us, is the program is for passengers 70 and over. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, for those who enjoy sports or an active lifestyle. I was told there was a walking track on the sundeck. They don't tell you that it's closed for 75% of the trip. Here's what's good about Viking: passengers are interesting, food is good, staff is excellent. Here's what's bad: everything else. On cruising days, we slept all day because there is nothing else to do except eat. very little shipboard ativities except for the program director's 15 minute briefing before dinner. there is a piano player/singer but except by 10 pm, everyone to be asleep. They tell you there's free wine and beer, but it's only for meals. If you want a drink before dinner, you have to buy it. If you get hungry late at night, you better have made a sandwich at one of the meals because there is nothing to eat except coffee/tea and cookies. Beds are very small and uncomfortable. Room is small compared to ocean cruises. Viking included airfare. They gave my husband and I seats 20 rows apart for the nine hour trip to Europe. Most importantly, they don't tell you that most of the time they have to transfer passengers to another ship midway because of high or low water problems. That means one day of your trip is spent packing and unpacking suitcases and traveling 4 hours and the sundeck is closed for most of the trip. It would be nice if passengers had that info before they paid for the trip. Would not recommend Viking. have been on Amadeus where they had bikes on board. That was much better for my more active lifestyle. Read Less

Having been on Viking before we were already aware of all of the great things about doing river cruising with Viking. On this particular cruise we were most impressed with the caliber of service from the crew. As it happens sometimes I fell ill on the cruise and required a doctor and then needed to rest for a few days. The concierge made the appointment, got the cab and came to the doctor's with me. When I needed to rest for a few days the rest of the crew helped my wife to get me food, and brought hot tea to help me feel better. They checked in on me and were just a joy to work with. Throughout the rest of the cruise the crew was especially attentive to me and always asked how I was doing and if there was anything I needed. I am happy to say that I had a great time. Read Less

A small river boat from Budapest to Amsterdam. City tours every day, river cruise every night. Incredible staff, better food, and luxurious accommodations. I got an understanding of the history or the river valleys, the castles, the monasteries, the Prince Bishops and the stages of the agriculture, the wars, the religions, and economies over 2000 years. Detail: Embarkation and debarkation - The crew took care of everything. All we had to do was walk on board. Ship: 200 staterooms, three dining areas, rooftop lounge and walking track. Dining: Three gourmet meals a day, each spread over a wide time band, running into each other. Snacks and coffee/tea all the time. Often the lunches and dinners were themed, with excellent food based on where we were travelling. Local wines in abundance. Just when I was wondering how they could improved as the trip had five days to go, they went all out for a series of incredible meals. Entertainment and activities - Onboard, music and culture, electronically showing pictures reliving the day. Offboard, several trips every day with varying levels of effort, showing the best each city or region had to offer. Service - Sublime, personal, from new friends. Ports and excursions - We hit all the big cities, castles and monasteries, with great local guides pointing out their favorite points and the importance of what had happened. Also remember a trip to a family vineyard and wine bottling and selling operation, excellent in-town food, souvenirs and just time to ramble in town, waving to the ship staff going the other way in a small alley. We are already planning another viking cruise or two, probably Portugal and the Baltic Read Less

My sister-in-law recommended it. The staff was excellent. The food was always wonderful and I loved the chef! I had no complaints. The Viking crew worked hard to make sure everything was great for us. I only had one complaint about the tour guide during our excursion to Schonbrun Palace. She went so far ahead of us, talking about things in one room, when we were in another room because of the crowd! To make it worse, the chef announced a spontaneous trip to the market that guests could go on but since we had booked the excursion, we didn't go. If we had known that was an option, we would have gone with the chef. The cabin was great and room service excellent. We enjoyed the nightly activities. I especially liked the glass blower demonstration. Overall all our excursions were great. I felt I was on a history tour! Yes, we are definitely going on another cruise! Read Less
