We initially chose to cruise at Thanksgiving because Viking was offering great deals. But we quickly fell in love with the Christmas markets in each town and village. We picked up Christmas gifts of glass, and wood and ceramics. We drank way too much gluwein and loved it. There was a particularly good art museum in Lintz just off of the place where we docked. We were also completely wowed by the Viking service and the beautifully appointed suite. We quickly made friends and had lovely evenings with good food and entertainment. The program directors made sure everyone knew where they were going and took great care of everyone. The wait staff were incredibly friendly, too. We particularly enjoyed Bratislava, which was small, but had some great local shops where we found some really good whisky. We were especially surprised by the evening arrival into Budapest which was an amazing show of the lights of the city. We tacked on three extra days in Budapest which gave us time to really see a lot of the city. We were so touched by the bronze cast shoes by the river representing the 60,000 Jews from Budapest that were killed during WWII. I would definitely do this cruise again! Can't stop thinking about the Christmas markets. Read Less

When my husband and I took our cruise we had never been on a cruise and I had never been to Europe. We came with no expectations and received the best vacation we have ever had. The service by everyone of the crew members made each of us feel special. Everyone went more than the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. From the time we arrived in Budapest to the time the escort left us inside the Munich airport to go home, everyone treated us like a favorite family member. The ship was clean and comfortable. The food was excellent. There was no lack of things to do and see. The cruise included great shore excursions at every port and there were a variety of extra excursions available to purchase. Everything was timed perfectly so we could see as much as we could at each port. This was going to be our only cruise but it was so good that we've already put down a deposit on a second cruise on the Rhine in 2019. Read Less

Had been on another cruise to Germany and enjoyed the trip and Viking experience. We liked the travel excursions both times. Viking seems to provide the same quality service every time to all passengers. Lots to see but the weather is never really bright and sunny in Europe. Cloudy with a chance of rain daily. Nice umbrellas at least. Highlight of the cruise was the trip to the dairy farm. I grew up near cattle and appreciated getting to show my partner how to pet the cows without getting butted. We would never hesitate to sign up for another Viking trip. Staff is superior to other cruise lines that I have been on. It is so nice that everything is so personable. Appreciated being called by name and having a bartender remember what you like daily. The staff readily joined in on all activities relating to entertainment.praise to all your employees! Only thing that went bad was at the arrival in the airport. Seven of us were asked to wait by the kiosk about 30 feet a way from the Viking greeters. They said they would lead us to the bus. 25 minutes later we were all alone with our Viking red tags on and the greeters had disappeared. Our new Canadian friend knew as well as I did that so etching was wrong. We went outside and split up searching for the bus going to Vili. We did find the bus as it was about to leave. He was really upset to say the least, as was I. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it took us to places we wouldn't have otherwise visited and we knew we would be spoiled and treated well. Well, it wouldn't be enough to say we received what we expected... the food and drink is incredible, tons of it and all quality. The service is spectacular and everyone tries their very best to make your day the best it can possibly be. They provide daily excursions that are so well planned, the logistics all excellent, then stand ready upon your return to cater to your every whim. We loved Vienna, Budapest and some little places in between. I recommend the 3 night add-on land package to Prague to extend the experience to a full 10 day trip. We met some fabulous people we hope to continue to cruise with in the future. It was the best trip we ever had. Of course the price is high and so we cannot go every year, but if you want to travel in style and see super interesting places, this is the way. We will be back for another in a year or so. Friends of ours went on a Viking River Cruise. I was concerned about getting sea sick but they assured me that I would be fine and I was. We were picked up at Airport and delivered to Airport after our trip. Never did we feel unsafe because the people on the ship told us what to beware of and we were given a card with ship info to carry with us in case we got lost while exploring on our own. I am a vegetarian and had no shortage of delicious meals. Sometimes the "meat eaters" at our table were envious! The waiters got to know us and our preferences. Made us feel so special. I was even able to get some cooking hints from the chef. Between meals there were baskets of muffins or cookies and coffee, hot chocolate, tea, etc. No matter how many cookies I ate I couldn't empty that basket. Every little detail was looked after and we were thoroughly spoiled. Our cabin was beautiful and cleaned every day. Didn't require formal clothes, dressed for comfort. The port excursions gave us access to things we wouldn't normally see. We went into a business where they were cutting diamonds. We also had an incredible tour of the Melk Abbey and the paintings, especially on the ceilings were amazing. Guides were so informative. Good taste of cultures. Staff wonderful! We loved every moment of our cruise. Came home and booked another river boat cruise right away. Best way to travel! Read Less

Six of us from our condo building traveled together. We had a great time - learned a lot about the countries visited. Hospitality on board was beyond our expectations. Service was excellent in every respect. A highlight for our group was the Strauss-Mozart concert in Vienna. My personal highlight was the Austrian Countryside optional tour. I was the only person signed up for this, but was never made to feel like it was an imposition to follow through. I had a great time with my 'personal' guide and English-speaking bus driver. We all had fun getting our hands into bread dough! The guides for our shore excursions were very good. We also had adequate free time in the various ports to explore on our own. The home visit in Bratislava was also a highlight. Getting to meet the 'locals' made the cruise much more meaningful. Food was outstanding - I wasn't too crazy about the German meal, but it was delightfully presented. Soups were amazing. Embarkation and disembarkation couldn't have gone more smoothly. I was amazed at how well we were cared for in every respect for the whole cruise. One 'needs improvement' was a computer that needed adjustment. I tried to send a few emails home, but it was a chore since the keys didn't represent the accurate letters, e.g., a=! Pretty tough to write a good report that way! Would I take another Viking Cruise? Absolutely! Read Less

We selected this cruise because it seemed a great way to end our first trip to Europe. After touring on out own for almost three weeks through Spain, we hopped on the Vili and enjoyed being pampered, educated, and transported in luxury. The facilities and staff were excellent, and the included tours started every day with an overview of the area. The food was wonderful, and the included beer and wine with meals made a beverage package unnecessary. The ONLY complaint we have is the strange way that Viking handles tipping. They claim to pay their people a good wage, yet towards the end of the cruise passengers are given a list of suggested tips. This document even suggests not tipping individuals because then those behind the scene would not get any tips. Well... if they pay a fair wage, operate in a region where tipping is rare, why would people need or expect tips? In Germany, Austria, and The Netherlands where the cruise occurs, people in service oriented jobs do not expect tips. (I have even asked in small pubs and restaurants to confirm and the employees tell me they earn a good living and tips are not part of the equation. On top of this Viking asks for $5/day/person for the cruise director, a position that is essentially management level! Our cruise director did a great job, and should be appropriately paid by Viking instead of working for tips. Again, other than the tipping glitch we had a wonderful cruise and would recommend it highly. Read Less

The places we visited were great and the crew was spectacular. The food was top shelf and the waiters went out of their way to please you. We tried to get the same waiter each night because he knew our names after the first day and took great care of us. My wife and I were celebrating our fiftieth wedding anniversary on this cruise, that is why we choose this time of the year to make our trip. We met some interesting people and made some new friends. Our cabin was well taken care of and was perfect for us. We enjoyed the outside veranda. The rest of the crew went out of their way to assist us with any difficulties and made the cruise even better. This was our first river cruise and first visit to this part of the world. Viking took care of everything! It was a stress free trip since Viking organized everything and the wonderful staff were always there to answer questions, offer suggestions, etc. The food was great with plenty of choices and always a vegetarian option for my husband. We had a veranda stateroom and loved sitting on our little balcony with a coffee, watching the beautiful scenery go by. The included tours were excellent with local guides who always had a few personal stories to share. Buses were comfortable and had a bathroom if you were traveling more than 1/2 hour. There was plenty of time to explore on our own, shop, have a coffee and pastry, etc. We did a few optional tours and loved those as well... Nuremburg WWII tour, Rothenburg Ob De Tauber, Top of Cologne. We have recommended this trip to many friends. We liked the size of the ship and found it easy to get to know people since you saw them at meals, on tours, etc. Our room was nice, clean, bed comfortable. We did the Grand European Tour with two other couples who are family. We wanted an adventure such as none of us had ever had and Viking met, and exceeded, what we were hoping for. We are experienced ocean cruisers but this was our first river cruise. We chose Viking based on the recommendation of other family members and we were anything but disappointed. The level of service is without flaw - they thought of everything and anticipated everything. Our cabin, while smaller than cabins on an ocean cruise, was so well laid out and appointed. Heated floor in the bathroom.... heaven. The excursions, that are included in every port, were simply outstanding. Our tour guides were all local and we learned so much about the history and culture of the ports that we visited. They were all wonderful. In some ports local talent and lecturers were brought on board in the evening, which was wonderful. The river cruise ships are lacking many of the "bells and whistles" of ocean cruise lines, such as shows, casinos, pesky photographers, games, etc. But there was a beautiful lounge on our ship with a great duo who played every night so it was a pleasant surprise to find that we could dance on the ship. The food was amazing - far superior to the ocean line that we normally travel. The presentation was gorgeous and there were always ample choices. In a word...... our Viking cruise was amazing. It was our first but it certainly won't be our last. Read Less

We had taken ocean cruises with other companies before and had always wanted to take a river cruise. It turned out to be a relaxing way to see many cities and we also enjoyed the commentary about the sights we experienced while cruising. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip. The service overall was great, though we especially enjoyed our waiters' attention to our needs and their senses of humor. The cruise director was great and also very helpful along with the rest of the staff. The cabin was very quiet and comfortable and was cleaned multiple times each day. The tours were great except for the windmill tour which was too crowded. Several of the tour guides were superb. We highly recommend the European Grand Tour cruise. We've cruised with Viking in the past, and they definitely don't disappoint. They deliver exactly what we want in a vacation. Their staff is professional and capable while remaining warm and accessible. By day two the bar staff had already memorized my favorite cocktail, the maître d knew where we liked to eat for dinner, and the wait staff brought me a special serving of the vegetables I love. We made sure to go on every shore excursion and booked multiple extra tours, because we're always so impressed with the quality of the guides. So many of the excursions give you access you wouldn't have without Viking. They also regularly have "visitors" on the ship that share about local culture in an intimate setting. We added time in Amsterdam with prior to our cruise, and we were very glad we did. Pick up at the airport was a delight, as was check in. There was always a Viking rep at the hotel when we needed one. We are many years younger than the average age of Vikings passengers, but that's never an issue. Its great to take a vacation where there are no children on board. We can do as much or as little as we want. Each time we cruise with Viking, we make new friends. We never miss having regular cruise ship offerings such as a casino, additional dining venues. We absolutely love that we don't ever have to dress for dinner. Viking isn't necessarily "fancy", but its always a quality experience. We are already planning our next Viking Cruise. We can't wait to see China with them. We highly recommend Viking. Read Less

We took the Viking Vili from Budapest to Amsterdam and added a few days in Prague before we started the cruise. I definitely would recommend this trip! Everything was done with excellence and each of the places we visited were unique and beautiful. The only drawback on the whole trip is that the internet connection as you travel down the river leaves something to be desired. This was our first river cruise and was chosen to visit countries and cities we had not visited before. The Vili longboat was excellent but beware of booking suites with balconies or French windows! There are over 60 Viking longboats cruising and often when they berth they tie up alongside an identical boat. This means that when you open the curtains in your cabin in the morning you are looking into an identical cabin window about a metre away! Our cabin on the lower deck was excellent Also be aware that there are over 60 locks on the Rhine/Main/Danube between Amserdam and Budapest and also many low bridges - this means that the sundeck is closed for 5 days in the middle of the cruise! Since the boat is 135m long and 11.45m wide and the locks are only 12m wide expect some bumping and noise during the night when passing through locks! The included tours in general were very good, well organized with mainly good guides. One other point of contention was the question of gratuities. Although gratuities are optional, if you follow the guidance given by Viking you should expect to spend about £400 on tips! I believe that gratuities should be included in the cost of the cruise and not used to boost the salaries of the staff!! The included tours were very good, well organized, with comfortable buses, good guides and good communication devices. Ships mooring berths were in general very convenient. Finally, we felt that 15 days visiting cities and small towns, most of which had cobble streets a castle/palace, a cathedral, old painted buildings and made the best sausages in the world was a bit too much - 10 days would be enough! You hardly know you are moving. The layout of the ships makes everything easy to access and the crew couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. Our room was perfect in every way. Every port we stopped at was unique and fascinating. There is so much beauty in these charming river towns and cities, and between cities were charming and bucolic scenes along the way with the history of the region ever present. We would recommend Amsterdam extension at the beginning of the trip and the visit to Prague at the conclusion of the river journey. Both towns are fascinating and well worth spending some extra time in these locations. We had such a wonderful time, and this will be the first of many river cruises with Viking! Read Less

This was our first (and last?) river cruise. While it was nice seeing all the cities along the way and only having to unpack once, the time spent on the ship was quite boring. There is very little to do due to the smallness of the ship. The top deck was closed for 3 consecutive days due to the low bridges we went under. The entertainment mostly was just the piano player and a female singer. At 9pm, they turned up the volume so it was uncomfortable to listen. Most people just sat around and read books - something they can do at home for free. The ship was very clean as was our room. The crew was very efficient in what they did and very helpful. The food was OK. An issue was that there was a single seating for dinner which began at 7pm each night. So, you were not finished until at least 8:30. For my wife with acid reflux, eating this late (and too close to bed time) eventually caused her digestion issues. The WiFi on the ship as poor. There was an adequate signal in the lounge, but bad in most other areas of the ship. They had a disclaimer saying to expect the WiFi signal to be spotty due to losing contact when going under bridges or in the locks or river valleys; however, there is no reason to have dead areas on the ship - put in some extra hot-spots around the ship. Due to the overly laid back nature of the river cruise, this will probably be our last. Read Less

I had looked longingly at the Viking commercials on television, never dreaming this would be possible for us. I finally decided to investigate and just happened to reach the website at a time when 1/2 price cruises were being offered. I am of German heritage, and my father was in Germany after WWII, and this looked like a perfect trip. Amazingly, my husband agreed that this was a good idea! Our trip exceeded all expectations. Our trip down the Rhine and the Danube was a trip of a lifetime. The accommodations were first class Even though we had a standard stateroom, with no balcony, wee didn't miss a thing. Everything was comfortable and perfect. Our cabin attendant saw to our every need. The Viking Villi Program Director Stein was an amazingly energetic and polished individual who provided expert preparation for our excursions prior to our stop in every port. His recommendations for places to go and things to try and see were always on point. We saw sights that we had only ever seen in books or on film, and could hardly believe that we were experiencing these wonderful places and people in person. Max the Chef presented a wide variety of fabulous regional cuisine Everything included locally fresh produce and ingredients that were loaded at each port. There were numerous choices to satisfy every palate. I can't say enough about the superlative quality of every aspect of our trip. All members of the crew were ready and willing to do anything required to meet our every need. Of all the magical aspects of the trip, I'd have to say that the exemplary service of every crew member was the single characteristic that puts Viking at the top of the list of cruise lines. And just so you know how every much we enjoyed our Viking experience, you probably need to know that we couldn't wait to book another one! We're going to Italy in May 2018!. Read Less

We enjoyed the evening entertainment, cocktails, snacks and social time with newly discovered friends. The format for adding excursions was easy to do before the cruise, and adjusting on board was super simple. Stein had a couple of historical lectures, which we enjoyed greatly. WE just returned home from our first river cruise: 2 weeks Grand European Cruise with Viking was outstanding. We loved every minute. Relaxing, yet lots of history to see and learn about. I cannot say enough about the crew: they were the best we have ever cruised with (previously 5 ocean cruises). 186 people are taken care of by 50 crew. That does not count the numbers of Viking employees or associates on land that made our land excursions so seamless and interesting. They definitely have the logistics down pat!! The cruise director was terrific and I would go anywhere with him again. The food was not fabulous, and I only gained 1 pound, but we chose to do as much walking as we could which was the only exercise we could get. Longships are limited in size by the lock systems on the European rivers, and by the shallow rivers we traveled on. Hence the lack of an exercise room. Since we booked air through Viking, we had greeters at our arrival airport, at the hotel of our pre-extension in Amsterdam, at the Budapest airport. We had heard a lot of good things about Viking River Cruises and decided to take a cruise ourselves to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We decided on the Viking Grand European Tour and asked three other couples to join us. From the time we stepped off the plane in Prague, for our pre-cruise tour, to the drop off at the airport after our post-cruise tour of Amsterdam, we had a very wonderful time. We must say, however, the accommodations in Prague, at the Corinthia Hotel were a lot nicer than the accommodations at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Amsterdam. After the Corinthia Hotel the Radisson Blu Hotel was a moderate to big let down. In addition we felt the Viking staff at the Corinthia were a lot more accommodating than the crew at the Radisson Blu. We also felt the tour of the city of Amsterdam should have been postponed to later in the day because of really heavy rain. Instead the tour went on and most everyone got soaked. We left the tour after 20 minutes and went back to the hotel to dry out. The cruise itself, the cruise director, the other officers and the rest of the ships crew, were all quite excellent. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful. Even the young man assigned to our cabin, although new and not yet up to par, was very helpful and did his best. Our cabin itself was large enough and in excellent condition. A problem with the TV in our cabin and the entire ship was our only complaint. EXCELLENT, that is only word we can think of to describe the dining experience aboard the ship. EXCELLENT. The staff in the dining room as well as the lounge and the Aquavit Terrace were as near perfect as one can expect. The entertainment was just what we had hoped it would be; a good piano player and an equally good singer. In addition some very nice surprises from the crew. The cruise director 'Joey' was nothing short of excellent and entertained us with everything from the weather reports to commentary while sailing through the Wachau Valley. The area we thought could use some improvement was the ports-of-call and the shore excursions. In particular Nuremberg comes to mind. As history buffs we very much looked forward to a tour of Nuremberg and opted for the Nuremberg World War II Tour. In our opinion the tour was a waste of money and time. Our arrival date in Nuremberg was the same day as the huge Rock im Park rock music festival held ANNUALLY in Nuremberg. Because of the festival we had traffic delays and we could not see Zeppelin Field. The festival is an ANNUAL event and Viking should not have sold that tour on the same day knowing the festival would be there. And as far as Courtroom 600 is concerned all we say is, is that all there is? In addition because we took the optional tour we missed the included tour of the city of Nuremberg. We also opted for the Salzburg Highlights tour which was promoted as a 9 1/2 hour tour. What is not in your literature is, there is more than 4 hours travel time to get to Salzburg and an equal amount of time needed to get back to the ship. Also, we could have done without the luncheon with a fixed menu and the "Sound of Music" entertainment. Additionally, we missed the walking tour of Passau. We think the Cologne Walking Tour should have included a lot more than Cologne Cathedral. It was just a walk around the cathedral. Aside from the problems with the tours we had an overall excellent time. We will say, however, that for future cruises we will most likely book our optional tours on board ship and not before the cruise. We think getting to speak with the Cruise Director and other personnel on board we can get a much better idea of what a tour will entail. Read Less

Started in Amsterdam pre boarding and enjoyed the city on our own. We had heard so much positive information about Viking and this tour that we anticipated a wonderful experience. The biggest disappointment was the dining room and the food. Service for all guests at same time (7:00) took over two hours. The room was so incredibly noisy I found myself yelling to be heard. I would think that anyone with hearing issues or aids would find this room to be uncomfortable and impossible to carry a conversation. The staff mentioned that the portions were small because people had complained about too much food being served. Well, there is a difference between small portions and tiny. I realize you can request more food, but after tasting the offerings I was not interested in more of the same. Finally started asking for vegetables. If any were served on the entrée, a few carrots, half a stick of asparagus. Extra veggies consisted of a bowl of carrots, no seasoning with maybe a few peas. I gave up and ate bread and ice cream, which was quite good. The fruit plates I though would be a savior. Not to be. No variety. One fruit per plate, a bunch of grapes, an apple, a pear sliced. I reviewed your recipes on line and wonder what ship those dinners are served on, certainly not on the Vili. Toward the end of the trip we started using the outside sundeck area where a limited selection of food was available and usually cold. The majority of food was over-cooked, inedible and frankly terrible. Read Less

the trip was fantastic!!!!! crew and staff excellent in every way. Christmas dinner was something very special for everyone on board. local talent to come on board was also very much unexpected and very good. shore excursions were fantastic with ample time to explore on your own. Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna in the evening at the palace had to be the climax of the trip. the usher asked us if we were from Viking and we were escorted to seats on the stage with the orchestra. shopping the Christmas markets was fantastic. problem being how to pack it all and bring home. (suggest extra suitcase) another reason I pick Viking is their airport transfers, this is very import as just one more thing I do not have to worry about, I am on vacation and Viking makes every minute count. I have recommended Viking to many of my friends and seems we are all getting to be world travelers as Viking expands their fleet, our next cruise is already booked and really looking forward to the Viking Star ocean cruise. Viking is an excellent river cruise company. The staff is excellent in that they have thought about things that you didn't even know you might need! The food was delicious, the bar was well stocked And if you want to make sure that the ship will have your favorite drink, you can call customer service at least a month ahead of your sail date and tell them what you will want them to have on hand. The tours were all great and the program director was very knowledgeable. We had our flights arranged through Viking and everything was taken care of by Viking. It was really nice to know we would be met at the airport by Viking representatives and to be taken back to the airport by them. This was our fourth cruise with Viking and we would love to sail with them again. All of our cruises have been wonderful and we have met many couples that we still stay in touch with. Read Less
