Our travel agent recommended Avalon. The social director was excellent. Also Anna the activity director was fantastic. The small size allowed us to get on and off with ease. Smooth sail. Only 157 passengers. So convenient to return to our cabin. Beautiful scenery and narration by the social director. Met many nice people from all over the country. Got together with some after disembarking in Vienna. While the breakfast, lunch, snack service were excellent, they cleared it up rather quickly and when you returned from a tour you had to rush to get a snack. The dinner service staff needs to be trained not to remove the bread basket and olive oil in the middle of dinner. The serving of coffee or tea was not served either at the proper time and sometimes not served at all. We enjoyed the hot chocolate and cappuccino machine in the lounge. The robes and towels were soft. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it visited many of the major cities we were interested in going to. By taking this cruise it gave us the opportunity to consider which cities we would like to return to and spend more time. We have traveled with Avalon in the past and are impressed with the high level of organization and attention to details. From booking the cruise through our disembarkation in Budapest everything was taken care of first class. Our state room was on the second level with a balcony. It was very comfortable and provided adequate room for the 2 weeks. The entire staff was very helpful, pleasant and accommodating. They would go out of their way to make you comfortable. We took advantage of all the shore excursions which were broke down into smaller groups which allowed us a far better experience than some other tour operators we saw in the cities. The knowledge and quality of local guides was very helpful. We will continue to use Avalon as our primary cruise line. Read Less

We chose this ship for its itinerary as we wanted to visit the Netherlands to see the tulips, in particular Keukenhof Gardens. This was our first river cruise so we splurged on an upper cabin, Cabin 314. Great room with a very comfortable bed that faced huge windows overlooking the passing scenery. Plenty of storage but could have had a few more drawers. Ports were good but traffic traveling to and from the Keukenhof, Brussels and Bruges became an issue. They may have been better served to find closer ports, if possible. Ship has a large lounge where they hold light lunches and dinner, entertainment in the evening, yoga and other exercise classes during the day and a very nice bar. There is a smaller lounge at the rear of the ship that had games, books, drinks and cookies & muffins. They could have changed their snacks more frequently as they served the same type daily. Evening entertainment was usually a piano player and select nights they invited a trio who played 50s and 60s and another who played classical music. Evening entertainment was not a draw for us or in general the type of passengers on the ship. They did have a happy hour usually from 5:45 to 6:45 where drinks are half price and then the cruise director gave a brief overview of the next day’s port of call. The ship was immaculate at all times. The main dining room served all three meals as it was too chilly for the upper deck to be open. Breakfast was a buffet with an egg station where you can order omelets or eggs any way. They usually had items that could be ordered directly from the kitchen, such as waffles, pancakes, etc. Lunch was a buffet and was very tasty with a nice selection every day and usually a carving station. Dinner was not as consistent. Portions were unusually small. I ordered a shrimp cocktail which had one shrimp and a few teeny tiny ones. I had a puff pastry ragout but got no puff pastry. The cream soups were very good. Entrees were a total mixed bag. I ordered fish and it was over cooked, another time is was undercooked, the rack of lamb was over seasoned and some days the pasta dish was delicious and another it was watery. Such a shame. Wine and beer were free flowing during dinner which is a nice change from regular cruises. Service was inconsistent as well. It is open seating and dinner is served from 7 to 9. If you sat closer to the kitchen, service was generally quicker and more attentive than sitting towards the entrance. They could use a few more service staff. Dining was very casual and you could wear the same clothes you wore during the day. No one dressed for dinner. I wish I knew in advance and I would have not packed some of my clothes. Staff was great. The captain was very visible and frequently was at the gangway when we were leaving or coming back from excursions. The cruise director, Bram, was all over and did a wonderful job keeping us informed and dealing with questions and resolving issue. The wait staff, housekeeping, front desk could not have been nicer. The fitness center is extremely small - one treadmill, one bike and one weight table. They did have exercise classes early in the morning and throughout the day but we were mostly out on excursions. The weather was chilly so you need to dress in layers and good walking shoes. we frequently did over 10 miles per day but we like to wander. At embarkation, they greeted you and you stayed comfortably in the lounge with piano music, light lunch and an available bar until the rooms were ready. At disembarkation, we were staying an extra day. You requested the day before for a taxi and while you had to be out of your room by 9 AM, you waited comfortably in the lounge until it arrived. All very civilized and you did not have to leave your luggage out the day before, just 1/2 hour before you had to leave or by 9AM. I would recommend this tulip cruise but be aware of dining issues. I would definitely go on another Avalon cruise if they were going to areas of interest. Read Less

I chose this cruise because the tour started in Prague, a city I have wanted visit for years. It is one of my husband's favorite cities. It also ended in Budapest; a city that neither of us had visited before. Even with the low water conditions and starting the cruise in a different spot that was further from Prague than Nuremberg and ending in Vienna, rather than Budapest, our cruise director, Danielle, did a fabulous job of jockeying for excellent alternatives for tours, hotel rooms, and entertainment options. The on board accommodations, dining and amenities were outstanding with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. There was a small fitness room on board, emphasis on small. However, there were very nice bicycles on board that we used when we didn't want to pay for a 4-hour round trip excursion for the day. The only downside with respect to other river cruises was that there were far more "not included" excursions than with other cruise companies that we have traveled with. Read Less

This cruise was to celebrate my retirement from teaching and my brother-in-law's retirement as well. We wanted to take a river cruise on the Danube. We had an excellent time with all of the excursions, the onboard entertainment. The crew and wait staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. They also made sure that our needs were met. Everyone always had a smile on their face when talking to the passengers. Our rooms were always clean as well as the ship's public areas. The food was outstanding. Every meal had so many choices to meet everyone's tastes and dietary needs. The dinners were exquisite choices all of which were delicious. The desserts were works of art. The entertainment provided was outstanding as well. In each region we visited, there was an evening show that was excellent. The off-ship excursions were full of history of the places we visited. I love history and my favorite place to visit was Salzburg. I would definitely take another river cruise in the future. Read Less

These tours are wonderful way to see lovely ports and hear of the history of europe without having to re-pack suitcase each day. I am a solo traveler, but a girlfriend was also on the cruise. I felt we still had a good time even though there were almost no actual solo travelers or girlfriend groups onboard. The panoramic staterooms are just wonderful. Being able to lie on bed and see the lovely scenery was breathtaking. I enjoyed sitting by the window and seeing the countryside as well as the towns drift by. Our tour did have low water conditions which caused us to miss a day on the boat - two nights at the beginning and one at the end. Avalon compensates you for this inconvenience and missing some of the river. They do put you up at a 5 star hotel. The bus rides were not so far, and the tours proceeded as they normally would if we had docked in town. So I never had to repack a suitcase. If the lower water was in the center, it might have had a more dramatic impact. I paid for the optional excursion to Cesky Krumlov in Czech Republic, and it was a highlight for me. Beautiful bus ride through the countryside too. Read Less

This was a fantastic cruise! We cruised from Vienna to Passau and then were transported to Munich where we spent an additional three nights. We arrived in Vienna two days early so that we could spend a day at the Spanish Riding School, attend morning exercise and take an afternoon tour of the stables. This was a trip highlight! Vienna is a beautiful, relaxed city with wonderful outdoor cafes. Another cruise highlight was a side trip arranged by Avalon to Dachau Concentration Camp, a highlight for us since my father was part of the U.S. Army liberation forces there. Everyone should visit this site! The cruise also offered a day trip to southern Bohemia in the Czech Republic to Cesny Kremlov, a beautiful, historic town and a UNESCO world heritage site. Another trip highlight was a shore excursion from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle - this was a fabulous side trip and another UNESCO world heritage site. Finally, we arrived in Munich on the day Oktoberfest started which was a pleasant surprise, as the city was in festival mode and many people were dressed in traditional lederhosen and dirndls. Beer was abundant! We went on a river cruise on the Rhine about 4 years ago on another cruise line and had issues with our cabin that were never resolved. Avalon's cabin, dining and services were all excellent and much better than our previous experience on Viking. We will definitely cruise on Avalon again! We could not have been more satisfied! I liked the idea of NOT having to move my stuff...bus tours are not my idea of relaxing... Ship and staff were fabulous. Food plentiful, variety and quality. Wine was lovely....room was nice size, shower/bathroom quite lovely ....loved the panoramic windows, but views were of the boat docked next to us, or the wall. Only once did I have a day time sail to Passau Germany which was lovely....otherwise panoramic windows were of no use...bugs get in if you leave an inside light on...and diesel smells... Once we got to Passau Germany, we were told the ship could not go any further because of LOW water levels...6 nights of 15 day tour, we were to be bussed for the rest of the tour...Was offered to leave tour, but couldn't get help to make arrangements..Called Avalonwaterways, and the airlines...not able to get any help....I was also getting sick and having trouble just trying to get well....The bus went to the cities we would have seen by day excursions...that was lovely...only two times able to stay where I could rest if I didn't want to go...out of the 7 days of bus tour....Our Tour Director Monica did a smashing job dealing with all of us and the arrangements....Just DID NOT WANT a bus tour, not what I signed up for...very DISAPPOINTED....Customer service after you buy the tour was not there to help if you needed to make other arrangements to cut short your tour because of Mother Nature...Avalonwaterways needs more customer service department to help when these disasters happen....not be put on hold for 15 minutes before anyone can help also the time difference...a 24 hour help line would be wonderful. Tour director should not have to deal with all of this....Namaste' Read Less

Have not previously had an opportunity to visit/your this part of Europe. The cruise and the audio guided tours were so informative and inspiring of the historical significance of each region. I would do the same cruise again were it not for need to explore other areas of Europe as well. The cruise director Katy as the face of Avalon was most informative, humorous, accomodating and professional. The local onboard extra entertainment with musicians added to the overall enjoyment. The changes in the shops schedule due to low water levels were made up by some of the extra included tours that would have been optional. The food service personnel were most accomodating with special doet needs of my travel partner eho is gluten and dairy free. I especially enjoyed the barrista machine available 24/7. Also appreciated the early (6am) continental breakfast prior to dining room opening at 7am. Highly recommend this cruise and expect to explore another area of Europe by river soon. Read Less

Loved our trip! Fabulous cruise! Great service everywhere on the ship, everywhere. That includes the tour director Katy, she was amazing. A few issues with low water levels, but Katy had a solution for every issue. She handled it all with a smile and good humor. Food was fabulous - I'm a picky eater and there was more to eat then I needed. You could be as good or bad (LOL) as you wanted. One couple was vegetarian and they worked hard to keep them full and happy. BTW, generous pours of wine at lunch and dinner! Loved the carving station, great french fries, wonderful omelettes and croissant for breakfast. The service was up there with the very best. Fabulous activities and excursions - all the tours and tour guides we great. Absolutely no complaints. My only complaint was the music during the cocktail hour. It was an electric piano with added musical sound effects. I'm 66 and the music would have made my 93 year old father happy. I think most of the guests were baby boomers - it would have been so much more fun for us if we were relaxing and drinking to Motown, 60's 70's and 80's, etc. rock or pop. Hearing our memories - instead of my father's memories would have been a huge improvement. Sorry to be so harsh, but the music often painful and elicited moans from the group. Other than that it was all we wanted and needed. Will definitely look into another Avalon cruise. Already recommended it to our friends that travel. Read Less

We began our 15 day, Amsterdam to Budapest-cruise on 8/18/18 on the Avalon Visionary. Due to low water, we had to get off the boat and go to a hotel in Frankfurt fir two night. We then biarded the Avalon Visionary. We were told that in order to “catch a wave “we had to skip Nuremberg. We were okay with all this and Avalon did offer compensation in the way if extra excursions and some reimbursement. We were given the impression that all would be well from then on. However, three days before the end of our trip we were told that the last two days would be in a hotel in Budapest because the boat was scheduled for another trip. Half of us were in one hotel and half in another so we never got to say good-bye to friends we had made, had mediocre hotel buffet/cafeteria food and lost two days of the riverboat experience because of Avalon’s unnecessary decusion. At first they lied to us and said in writing thst it was the water situation. When we saw our ship in Budapest, we demanded answers and we were then told in writing “The shipwas due to begin new cruise today in Budapest on an already scheduled deoarture. In order to not disrupt another cruise.......we scheduled your last nights in Budapest in a hotel.” Shame on them! In all fairness, we lived our time on the biat. The Avalon Impression is a beautiful ship, but the staff and especially the cruise director (Bram Van Dyke) made the cruise a marvelous experience. We boarded early in Amsterdam and while our cabin was being serviced we borrowed the bicycles and rode around "bike city". Our cabin was ready at boarding time and a wonderful welcome aboard dinner afterward. The ship is spacious and beautifully decorated. Our stateroom was well appointed and storage space and closets were more than adequate for the requirements of a 14 day cruise. It was surprising how quiet the staterooms were (even underway and docking). Included excursions were well organized, informative and efficient. There were generally three groups and sometimes a fourth for "gentle walkers" All of the transportation was on air conditioned buses with WC. The guides were pleasant, informative and fluent. Due to low water levels on the Danube we were unable to continue the cruise on our ship. In these adverse conditions, I have to commend Avalon for the care, concern and professionalism in how they transported the passengers from our ship to another ship that was beyond the low water area of the Danube. I am a retired airline captain and I understand disruptions in service due to environmental factors. Our cruise director and the management of Avalon performed in an exemplarly manner in these adverse situations. Our cruise was to end in Budapest but once again the water level on the Danube made it impossible to cruise to the City. Avalon responded again with excellent transportation and beautiful hotels in Budapest. Including tours and meal reimbursement. Another logistical miracle. Well done!! Read Less

I have been on several ocean cruises but this was my first river cruise. My travel agent suggested the Avalon cruise to me as a great way to see a part of Europe. I have seen Europe before and recently spent time in Germany but this cruise gave me a whole new perspective of travel and seeing the sights. Land tours take you to the big cities and towns but river cruising gives you the opportunity to see the small villages and how people really live. The ship is truly a floating hotel with all the amenities. There are a wide variety of shore excursion options to choose from including fully guided tours, orientation tours with time to sight see on your own to just grabbing a bike (with helmet) and taking off on your own (maps provided). There were a variety of lectures and nightly entertainment by local artists from the villages we visited. It was interesting to see them get on and off the ship at the locks we went through; 68 locks in all! The food was amazing! It was locally sourced and the lunch and dinner menus featured local dishes of the towns we were visiting that day. All the staff were so gracious and personable and it was fun getting to know them. I can't wait to book another river cruise on Avalon; especially if it is as great a trip as this one was! Read Less

First time river cruise and after 20 plus Ocean cruises we decided to experience a River cruise. The embarkation was easy and even thou we arrived a little early we were located into the Lounge to await our rooms readiness. Our room was better than expected with a large bathroom and shower. Storage was adequate and we had a large she in the room. We had 116 passengers onboard so not full capacity, the layout and the facilities onboard we easy to navigate and allowed for many areas where on could comfortably relax with out a crowd. Food service was excellent with a local varied menu selection. Dinner was a 7PM and wines flowed liberally. Breakfast and lunch were available in the dining room and a lighter selection of those were available in the forward lounge, which was nice to have. Again beverages were complimentary and always served. Evening Happy hour had 1/2 price drinks but I will say the full price was a little steep. Port shore excursions were always well guided and were very interesting giving adequate free time to explore. Of course we could always have more free time everywhere! We had a small problem with the Danube being closed near Regensburg for a grounding of a overweight freighter. We had packed to leave the ship but in the end we remain onboard. I will not get into detail but to my great pleasure the cruise director Anna and Avalon made our small problem into an experience of fabulous customer service. Additional perks and options were made available to smooth out our repacking and inconvenience. Congratulations to all Avalon personal for showing us there are travel companies that understand excellent customer service. Finally, the onboard staff. From top to bottom each and every staff member were pleasant, professional and enjoyed their work. We could not fault any crew member. Read Less

I chose to do a second riverboat cruise because I loved the first one of the Rhine River on Avalon and thought I would try the Danube. What I liked best was the attention to details. The cabin has a great bed.....great shower. Even the blow dryer is good enough so I don't have to bring my own. I like the robe and slippers since it means I don't have to pack those and there's never enough room in my suitcase with the weight restrictions these days. The same goes for the toiletries. Qualify brand. The cruise director was amazing....and the hotel manager got me into my room BEFORE the scheduled time as I had traveled all night and was exhausted. The onboard talent was superior. Everyone on board was friendly and efficient and the food was amazing. I love that there are so many choices at dinner as I am a bit fussy about food. The presentation was beautiful but more than that, the chef was extraordinary. Breakfast lunch and dinner were always a treat. Wine choices were good as well. I have nothing negative to say which seems crazy as I've traveled a lot so I have experiences to compare but the quality of service, attention to detail and the product presented are all excellent. Wish I could do more of these but they are expensive. I didn't criticize for that as you have to pay for that type of Five Star service and attention to small details. Read Less

Had never visited these countries and the Danube River was recommended by friends. River cruising was definitely a unique way to travel. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. We loved the time spent on land beforehand (Budapest) and afterwards (Prague) also. The hotel we stayed at in Budapest (New York Palace) was much nicer than we expected and the hotel afterwards in Prague (Hilton) was not as nice as we expected. The ship and all amenities were very nice. The crew were really helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Food was varied and very good. We enjoyed the local food and wine selections. Always had good wine. We enjoyed the excursions. We could've stayed some places longer but knew it was not possible to cover more ground in the days allotted. Our tour director, Christine, was the best. She really made our trip memorable and was very thorough in all her explanations of how things worked. The local guides were very good, too. We were able to use bicycles 3 different times and we really loved that (it was one reason we chose Avalon, knowing that they have bikes on board for guest use). The one thing we wished we would've known more about ahead of time was concerning the optional excursions. We didn't know if we would have the chance to sign up once we arrived so we signed up ahead of time not really knowing which ones we wanted to do for sure. We knew that some of them might be "sold out" but weren't sure which ones (it seemed that none of them were sold out when we got there and we could've waited). We felt like we didn't have enough information about this beforehand. Not sure we would do another river cruise because of the cost and desire to do more varied travel but we wanted to have the experience. Read Less

A long time grammar school friend invited me on this cruise. She had taken the Rhine River cruise and recommended it. I normally travel with an adventure company to unusual places, so this was different for me. I do love traveling by river boats - I had done a much smaller cruise on the Amazon. What I enjoyed was the relaxing movement, the food, the crew, the dining staff, the people that I met, the accommodations and service. The ship was well maintained, the captain was friendly and very accessible. Everyone was helpful and friendly. I enjoyed seeing the various towns along the way, both from the top deck and from the tours. Because I am used to small groups, I struggled with the size of the tour groups as we went into the towns. I found it more enjoyable to explore on my own and I appreciated that there was almost always time to do that. Overall this trip provided wonderful memories and a good overview of the various towns and cities we visited. Read Less

Several of the members of the service team we would have loved to bring home with us. Personable, friendly, professional and efficient. From the Captain on down. They did whatever it took to get the job done and add to the guests experience., The one and only negative that I would say was going through the Wassau Valley with Salsa music playing after the cruise director completed his commentary of the area. Everything was fantastic! The ports, the excursions, the food/drink (included beer and wine), the service, the value for the dollar -- everything. The staff was personable, approachable, professional, and all were genuinely happy to be of service. The meals were way beyond what we expected as they were served within moments of being finished in the kitchen. The presentation was impeccable! With only 160 passengers it is far easier to cook and serve immediately than on bigger ships. Our prior cruising trips were on ocean ships and their food was simply mass produced and usually cold by the time it got to you. There were always at least 6 choices of entree for dinner and at least 2 options were indicative of local fare for the city that you had just visited. Same with the wines - which were also excellent. Excursions were extremely well planned and a good value. Port calls had plenty of time planned for the excursion and extra time to go out on your own. They had on-board entertainers that were talented and funny. We did not expect this entertainment offering at all so it was a very nice touch. Tips to first time travelers - bring an electricity converter and a few adapters. A small backpack is the best thing for daily excursions. Over 14 days we only had 1 server in a restaurant that did not speak English - and I think she did, but wouldn't! Most places accept credit cards but with others cash is easier. Buy your Euros from your bank before you leave home. If you have some left over you can use it to tip the staff before leaving. Though wi-fi is offered on the ship, the bandwidth is unpredictable. If you plan on trying to conduct business while on board and will need to send big documents back and forth, you will be very frustrated. Though this wasn't a complaint for us, it was the only thing that we asked Avalon to try to improve upon to make the experience better for their guests. Overall a great experience that we would definitely do again. Read Less

This cruise was chosen because of our travel agent ‘s recommendation. We have cruised with Holland and Viking in the past and wanted to try Avalon. The cruise director Robert was excellent. He provided daily updates, answered questions and help make the journey pleasant every step of the way. Our cabin was clean and the housekeeping staff pleasant and accommodating. Also, the dining staff provided excellent service. The Port and Shore excursions were very exciting and what views of the towns and castles along the Rhine and Danube rivers just breathtaking. One of the best options provided was a Gentle Waking group. My wife has some walking limitations and walks slower. This option was a really good fit for us. Also the tour guides were very knowledgeable and provided great information about the history of the towns and different places we visited. We will definitely use Avalon again our cruises. Read Less

Choosing which cruise line to take my first every cruise for my 65th Birthday was the hard part (and I knew I didn't want to do a large ocean cruise) until my travel agent recommended Avalon. Then the next decision was deciding which of the fabulous cruises to choose from. Once I had decided on "Magnificent Europe" it was booked and 11 months of eager anticipation set in, along with a lot of research, reading about the various places we would be visiting etc. I had 3 nights in Amsterdam before embarkation as having been to The Netherlands once before I was eager to spend more time there. Once on board everything was 5 star. The staff were fabulous, the stateroom on the Panorama Deck was beautiful and so clean - absolutely nothing to find fault with. The common areas for all the passengers to enjoy were very comfortable and spacious. The onboard lectures (2 of them) were informative and fun. The food was delicious with plenty of options to choose from. I didn't go to any of the entertainment at night because I was just too tired after a very busy day and after dinner just went to my room so I would be well rested to start another busy day in the morning. The excursions were informative and fun and the selection of places that we stopped were great, sometimes two places in a day. I loved everything about my cruise and am already looking forward to another Avalon cruise in 2020. Book your Avalon Cruise soon - you won't be disappointed. Read Less

We can't come up with anything negative to say at all about this cruise. It was our first river cruise--so didn't have much to compare it to, other than what we've heard people say. The cabin was extremely comfortable, with a view that made movement from one location to another perfect. The dining was exceptional, and the staff treated us wonderfully. Embarkation and disembarkation was easy. The evening gathering where we were informed of activities for the following day were helpful. The excursions we participated in were conducted very profesionally, were informative, and on-time. Transportation off the ship to the various excursions was smooth, and it was extremely nice that they had us back to the ship for lunch for a nice break before we headed for our afternoon outings. We look forward to more river cruises with Avalon Waterways and would highly recommend this cruise line to our friends and family. Read Less

The garden lovers part of the cruise was good. All garden trips were included but the best was Keukenhof Gardens. We did the whole day tour, and used every minute of the time exploring. Traffic delayed us 1 hour or more. We even got to see some of the flower fields up close from the bus as we drove into Keukenhof. Prior to the ship leaving we went to Zaanse Schans for an optional tour. Zaanse Schans is a windmill city with mills that make cheese(with a demo and tasting of many different flavors of Gouda ), make wooden shoes (with a demo) as well as grinding pigments for paints (with demo). There were other windmills there, but it was only a 1/2 day tour, so we didn't get to see other demos. We could climb to the top of one windmill if we wanted. Would have liked more time there. The Botanical Garden in Antwerp, the 'hidden gardens' behind canal homes in Amsterdam and the arboretum in Ghent were all very interesting. There was a lot of walking from one hidden garden to another, and the last one we visited was not worth it. No beautiful flowers, just a church. The canal boat ride in Amsterdam was just OK bc our specific boat didn't have a clear view of the buildings. It was an older boat, and the top didn't open to the sky. Other boats did. Entertainment on board was a singer/piano player who was there everyday for happy hour as well as after dinner. Additional entertainment was a local clog dancing group who wore local costumes as well as a classical instrumental group. Both were good. The captain was excellent. He was at the gangway everytime we left and he greeted us when we returned. He was even up at 5:30 am to say good buy when we're leaving to go home. He mingled with the passengers and answered questions if we had them. Food was outstanding. Chef carved something everyday for lunch plus soups, salads etc. Alternate dinner choices were very good if we didn't like any of the choices on the menu which were quite extensive. They would alter our food choices to our liking bc of certain dislikes. Very accommodating!! Read Less
