The Danube travelling towards the Black Sea included many countries we had not visited, but the real reason was the inclusion of war correspondents lecturing and so adding to the experience . Of the3, Martin Bell (who travelled with us) was superb: 4 lectures of appropriate length and content, delivered with video clips to make the whole thing 'come alive' as we travelled the troubled regions of the former Yugoslavia. His last talk was very light-hearted: Politics and Poetry. Sadly, the lectures from the other 2 reporters were not up to the same standard. The boat was new, so rooms seemed even smaller. Service was excellent, although the food was inconsistent and a little too novel cuisine at times. Tours were generally very good, although a great deal depended on which local guide you ended up with - standards of English and input both variable. More activities on board would have been welcomed during the sailing day. The disappointment was no time in Budapest, and the 2 days in Bucharest. After a well organised cruise, things just weren't of the same standard (although the hotel was fine) Visits and catering outside of the hotel both left much to be desired. The overall experience was very good - not least due to the cruise director, Jana. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the speakers - John Simpson, Martin Bell and Nick Thorpe. Most nights we were treated to informative and entertaining talks. The standard of accommodation was excellent. Dining could be described as 4 star - consistently good and well balanced throughout the week. We were very impressed by the meticulous planning of the activities and prompt timekeeping. Regarding the local guides, they were all first rate, knowledgeable and approachable with a good command of English. Most of the on shore visits were of interest but some were weak. However, it must be difficult to find venues at the very end of the season. There was a small swimming pool with current to swim against and bicycles on board to use at each port. We would be happy to recommend Emerald to others and would also consider cruising with them again. We would probably choose a different stretch of river. Read Less

As we had previously cruised north on the Danube from Novi Sad to Vienna we decided we would like to cruise south towards the Black Sea on another cruise. The cruise with the war correspondents clinched it. We loved the ship but found the dining room very noisy, hard for me as I am hard of hearing. Some more soft furnishings and may be fewer passengers would have made it better. The food was interesting and excellent. I have a mushroom allergy and every day I received a personal menu in the cabin during the morning with dishes I couldn't eat highlighted. My husband and I both celebrated our birthdays and were treated to a cake and firework at dinner and special towel sculptures and a card in the cabin. The cabin was spacious and the drop-down window useful when taking photos but the weather was not good enough to take full advantage of that facility. As we arrived at the ship very late due to flight delays we missed the briefing and no one offered a "catchup" one so we had to find out a few things for ourselves. We did not find the tissues in the cabin until asking for some the second day and we were told they were in the cupboard in the bath room which was hidden behind the mirror- not at all obvious! We tended to go to bed later than most other guests and twice could not use the coffee machine in the lounge after 11pm as it was being cleaned but we could have waited 20 minutes if we had been desperate. The service was efficient and organisation by the cruise director excellent. The excursions were well organised with excellent guides with radio mikes speaking into our head sets which were provided in the cabin. If you like swimming you may be pleased there is a pool but put off by the size of it. I think Emerald do themselves a disservice by not stating anywhere that the pool has a powerful jet feature from one end that you can swim against. I am a good swimmer and could beat it doing front crawl but for back stroke it held me in the middle of the pool and I could keep going as long as I liked and was able to feel I had had a good swim. We chose this cruise because of the inclusion of talks by leading correspondents - Nick Thorpe, Martin Bell and John Simpson. The cruise itself was very good. A fine, new vessel with a committed, competent and friendly crew. Administration was efficient and our cruise director always kept us well briefed. The onshore activities at the various stops were all interesting, if not always riveting because of limited choice of things to do around eastern Danube ports. The buses used were all comfortable and the local guides were knowledgeable. The material provided by the correspondents added much context. The onboard entertainment was enjoyable and provided local colour. Our cabins were well appointed and comfortable and the food and wine were first rate. The hotels used in Budapest and Bucharest were adequate, rather than good but that didn't really detract from our enjoyment. This was our first river cruise; it won't be our last. Read Less

Overview This was a first time river cruise for us and were attracted to it by the presence of Martin Bell and John Simpson relating their experiences of reporting for the BBC on the unrest and war events that have covered the Balkan region through the last 25/30 years. We travelled from Budapest to Bucharest through five countries and as a consequence of their presentations had significant added value to all of the shore excursions which were varied, interesting and very relevant. It thus provided us with a more in depth understanding of the history of this region and considerably enhanced our enjoyment of the cruise. The Ship We felt that the Ship, which is just over a year old, was spacious well appointed and offered excellent facilities for a 7-10 day cruise. The staff on board were always cheerful and helpful. Above all, they were excellent in the service they provided. Pre/Post Cruise We did not have a pre-cruise stay in Budapest but had a two day stop in Bucharest which was included in the overall cruise package. We had the benefit of two guided tours of Bucharest which gave us a good insight into the City and what it offers, and will probably think about a longer City break at some time. Food The food on board was plentiful, varied and freshly prepared each day. There was no excuse for being hungry with ample choices for breakfast, four courses for lunch and dinner, with afternoon tea and late night snacks for those that really got peckish. We took advantage of the opportunity to tour the kitchen with the head chef who explained the daily routines for ensuring that the excellent quality was maintained. Excursions These were well thought out and relevant to the theme of the cruise. The value of the excursions was considerably enhanced by the quality of the tour guides. On all our tours we had well informed, knowledgeable tour guides who had great personalities, a sense of humour, spoke clearly in English and were keen to ensure we got the most out of the visit. Service First class by all staff. Going again Have already booked another cruise with Emerald. Any Negatives We have a need for specialist diets and in this respect we had the menus on a daily basis marked up with all allergens. These were a bit confusing and we found the best course of action was to discuss with the Head Waiter at lunch and dinner, who was more than helpful in providing clarifications and ensuring that appropriate alternatives were provided. This did not always translate to shore excursions and in some cases the options were very basic and limited. Read Less

I have just returned from a week's cruise on the Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest. This is my second river cruise. The first being on The Nile, 9 years ago. The ship was lovely. Well appointed and spotlessly clean. Our cabin was luxurious and comfortable and we received a free upgrade. Many people we met had also been upgraded which leads me to believe that this is Emerald policy if they have empty rooms - and a good one! My only criticism about the accommodation is that the lounge and dining room were not big enough for the number of people on the ship and it was difficult to fit everyone in. You were often left looking around for a table at meal times and we had to get to the restaurant early and queue to ensure that we got a table that accommodated 6 people. We chose to eat in the lounge area for lunch because it was more relaxing. Had the weather been better, I expect that the top, outdoor deck would have been utilised more relieving pressure on the other rooms but this wouldn't make any difference at dinner time and in the evenings. Food was plentiful and of very good quality but the wines on offer could have been better. We did, eventually, find a wine that suited us but always had to ask for it specifically and often wait for it to be found. It was nice to have the option to eat in the dining room or the lounge. Several members of our party chose the 20 euros per day drinks package. This was excellent value for money but, sadly, didn't include sparkling wine. Entertainment was low key. There were two external and two in-house shows. All were very good. It would have been nice to have a show of some sort after dinner each evening, too. The pianist in the evenings was excellent but little variation. Service across the board was excellent. The staff work as a team and are an asset to the company. We were invited to dine with the Captain one evening, which was a wonderful experience, and my brother-in-law, who celebrated his birthday on the same day, was made to feel special leading to a great evening. Shore excursions were good. All of the guides were helpful and spoke very good English. However, the walks were very short. Our group had an average age of 63 but found them too easy. It seemed that they were geared for older people (the average age on the ship must have been about 70). Overall, we had a great time. We saw lots and had many laughs. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't always kind to us but that's how it goes. If I were to go on a river cruise again, I would certainly choose Emerald as I know that they would give me a quality experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was on a small ship and on a river - the Danube - which we have never visited before and which looked varied and interesting. The facilities looked luxurious and the package looked good value for money. Everything lived up to our expectations and more. Emerald Sun is new for 2016 and a remarkable piece of naval engineering: much of the top deck structures raised and lowered to accommodate bridge heights and water levels. Our cabin was splendid - large bed, plenty of storage and hanging space, spacious en suite shower room and a miraculous balcony with a glass panel we could lower to be in the open air. We appreciated the Nespresso machine, too. Public areas of the ship are spacious and comfortable. I particularly liked the swimming pool which is small but has an infinity wave machine so you can swim against resistance as far as you like, but remain in the same spot - bit weird looking out at the river. Food is plentiful and varied with buffet arrangements for breakfast and lunch. Eggs and omelettes are cooked to order at breakfast and there's an endless supply of anything else you might want to eat. Lunch and dinner are both four courses and wine, beer and soft drinks are included with both. Tea and coffee are available all the time in the Horizon Lounge. I was a bit disappointed with the 'vegetarian' offerings but then I always am, believing that there are few chefs who can cater for veggies. I do eat fish, however, and there was always a fish dish. Perhaps the best thing about the whole trip were the shore excursions, with at least one each day included in the price. They are thoughtfully organised so you are back in time for lunch: this meant we spent hardly anything during the holiday. Entertainment was varied, if a bit predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. The ship was only a year old and was in excellent condition. Cabins were clean and well-appointed and the space was planned well. Beds were very comfortable and everything we needed was provided. Breakfast and lunch buffets were excellent with plenty of choice for the mains, although dessert choices were limited. Dinners were served at table on most nights and were variable, but generally good. There were plenty of free drinks at meals and these were promptly refilled! Service was of a high standard. Staff were friendly, polite, helpful and efficient. There were plenty of activities and the schedule was highly organised. I was extremely impressed with organisation overall. Everything ran like clockwork. The included guided tours were excellent and very enjoyable. Extra trips were also superb - a wonderful Viennese concert and a visit to a Slovakian family for coffee - and I have already told many friends about these and how enjoyable they were. It felt as though everything possible had been thought of and done to make our trip memorable. Read Less

The food was excellent, bedrooms clean with a superb panoramic view from our cabin, the ship very clean throughout and the crew were exceptional For us the river cruise is a much much better experience than a cruise ship. The trips were well thought out and planned even down to a special guide for the less abled. There was plenty of choice at meal times. Breakfast and Lunch being buffet with plenty of choice and dinner normally waiter service which consisted of five courses with a choice to each course. The crew were very friendly, friendly and always had a smile on their faces. We were in a cabin with a panoramic window which was ideal for the October weather. The window could be opened to half way down. I would opt for that sort of cabin again for our next river cruise Read Less

This was our 2nd Emerald cruise, this time it was The Danube cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest. We arrived at Munich airport to a well organised transfer to the ship. Slight delay boarding so we were well looked after with refreshments at a local hotel. The cabins on board are excellent, with a high comfort factor, very nicely appointed with large flat screen TV, hairdryer, robes. We were on a lower deck, with no balcony. It was fine, the window allowed river views so we could see the weather conditions! No engine noise, just some shuddering when docking. The lounge bar is very comfortable, although a personal preference would be for the furnishings off its sister ship. The sofas are very deep, not the best for short people and those with mobility problems. Staff are superb, regardless of department. Some are absolutely outstanding. The cruise director was excellent, informative & helpful. The restaurant, wow, what can I say, except I'm now dieting! The cuisine was amazing, great choice at all mealtimes, whether it be a light bight in the lounge or a 5 course Gala dinner. No complaints, only compliments to the chef, his team and restaurant staff. Always delicious wines to compliment both lunch & dinner. The included excursions were well organised, informative and enjoyable. However there were occasions when a member of our party could not participate due to mobility problems. This was usually due to being docked alongside other vessels and having to cross over boats. If it meant crossing from the sun terrace onto another boat, then there is no elevator to the top deck. Also other boats may not have elevators at all. We've already booked our next river cruise with Emerald, exceptional holidays. Read Less

First river cruise and loved it. Enjoyed the friendly atmosphere with crew and cruisers. Arrived in Nuremberg 2 days before sailing. Flew to Munich from Toronto. Took Flixibus to Nuremberg (2 hour drive). Ate some great food (bratwurst and sauerkraut, pretzel, gingerbread) and drank some dark beer. Embarkation was smooth. Arrived at 2:30 p.m. by taxi (15 minute drive, 20 euros). Friendly welcome by crew members. The cabin was small but had good storage space. The lounge was big, quiet, a relaxing meeting place. I would sit in one of the comfy sofas with a cup of coffee from their beverage corner and write in my journal. The dining room had a variety of seating arrangements. A chance to socialize with other cruisers and have a great meal. The soups and cheeses were delicious. The entertainment in the evening was George the piano player or you could hang out in the front/outside of the lounge and enjoy the view. If it was chilly they had heaters over the sofas to warm you up. One evening they had a crew show, very funny. I enjoyed the shore excursions, informative guides. The tours were only a few hours so never tiring. Always time in the afternoon for a dip in the pool or a short nap. The best part was the crew. Love, love, love them! Great experience! We chose this cruise as we had not done a river cruise before and the Delights of the Danube for seven nights seemed to be just what we were looking for. However, we were very disappointed by the poor quality food and lack of choice, fine dining it was not and on a cruise you expect the food to be memorable, this was for all the wrong reasons. The dress code of smart casual for dinner was not adhered to with many passengers wearing shorts, t shirts and flip flops in the dining room. Such attire is fine in the day, but not in the evening and is not acceptable. The food, poor entertainment and dress code are areas that need to be improved in order to get returning customers. I am afraid that we will not return to cruise with Emerald and from speaking to many of the British passengers it seems that many share my views. An expensive cruise that offers very poor value for money Read Less

This was our first ever cruise of any kind and we had no idea what to expect. The booking was so easy and the pack that arrived with our boarding cards already printed and great information was impressive. My only complaint was that we had to fly with Easy Jet which I thought was not impressive for such a costly holiday although we were given Speedy Boarder passes which compensated a bit! We were met at the airport immediately we got to the Arrivals area and whisked away in a car to the ship. Embarkation was so easy and we were thrilled when we saw our cabin with the open air balcony with the amazing view of the Hungarian Parliament Building. On the first evening we were treated to a cruise to see the city by night. Every day was special in it's own way, waking up in a new place having cruised overnight was great and then daytime cruising towards the end of the week offered a relaxing way to see the river and the sights. The staff were wonderful especially Jana the cruise director who deserves a special mention. The local guides were fantastic, so knowledgeable and so proud to show guests around their cities. A visit to a Slovakian family home for an afternoon with coffee, cake and wine was one of the highlights of the week. Overall the food was really good, always fresh and well presented with plenty of choice and drinks whenever you wanted them with the meals. You can choose from tables of two, four, six and eight so it is easy to get to know other people on the boat. The evening entertainment was okay, perhaps the only thing that could be improved upon. We will definitely be looking to do another cruise and wouldn't hesitate to go back to Emerald Waterways. Read Less

We booked an Evergreen tour of Eastern Europe plus a river cruise on the Emerald Sun from Budapest to Amsterdam. We simply couldn't have been more satisfied or impressed! The ship was superb! The team running the ship were first class! The itinerary was great! We were particularly impressed with our Tour Director, Jana! She couldn't have been more helpful and obliging, and was always perfectly organised. Very impressive! Also the chef, Lemanya, was great - the food was wonderful. Also terrific were the fantastic wait staff. Just so efficient and helpful! The ship was very new, and the entire layout very well thought out! It included Australian power points. Plenty of cupboard space. Each room had a very nice bathroom, with a roomy shower. The enclosed 'verandah' was particularly good - it doubled as an inside sitting room and an outside balcony just by pressing a button to lower the top window. Pretty nifty! I highly recommend this ship and its entire ship's crew! You won't be disappointed! Read Less

We chose Emerald as a result of attending presentations by both Emerald and Scenic (same ownership). They said that Emerald was a step lower than Scenic in terms of luxury, but I would challenge anyone to fault Emerald for its comfort and a great cruising experience. Our cabin was large - a smaller one would have sufficed, but the extra room in the Owner's Suite was terrific. The food was excellent. We opted for the light breakfasts and lunches as it's so easy to overeat on a cruise ship. Dinners were fabulous ad while they were four course meals, serving sizes were just right - not too large. The crew were fantastic and provided terrific, very friendly service, led by a great hotel manager and cruise director. Excursions were thoroughly enjoyable and great learning experiences, particularly the visit to the Nazi rally grounds in Nuremberg. Most excursions involved walking tours with audio units so you could still hear the guide even if you wandered off a little. We appreciated the daily exercise. I cannot speak highly enough of the entire experience with Emerald. The only comment I would have is that it would have been nice to have had more time in Budapest. We did a Prague add on with Emerald before boarding in Budapest and we only got one day in this city. Read Less

All of the services were world class, housekeeping, tour director, bar and restaurant staff. Cabin was very clean and well appointed, but small, and the sliding door to the bathroom was awkward. We used the bicycles on several days, which was a great way to see more of the cities, however the bikes themselves were heavy and difficult to handle, with drag (pedal backward) brakes and a weird frame geometry. One suggestion for Emerald would be to provide a few higher end, lighter bikes for those passengers who are experienced city riders. The food was great, but a little much of a muchness after several days, and we found ourselves craving hot spicy Indian food on one of the evenings, so we went ashore to satisfy that need! We were reprimanded for bringing our own bottle to the table on one of the evenings, which is understandable, but suggest that Emerald introduce an optional corkage fee, for those special occasions when you want to bring something very nice to the table. Laundry iron-burned one of my shirts. No big deal, but don't give them anything delicate or precious to you to wash. Read Less

The cabin we stayed in (#328/Panorama Balcony Suite) was quite comfortable, and we had plenty of room to unpack all of our belongings. The crew was fantastic...very friendly, very helpful, very courteous. They took care of our every need. The day trips and guides were local and quite knowledgeable about the history of their city, and all walking tours and even some bus tours were included in our fare, along with all tips. Beverages were available for free at meals (wine, beer, soda, coffee, tea, etc.) and at other times were available either individually or you could purchase a drink package that was customized for your preferences (which several of our group did.) The food was excellent, with many choices for each meal. Breakfast and lunch were buffets, and each evening we had a sit-down full service, 4-5 course meal, with choices for each course. There are so many different cruise lines going to the same places, my wife did a spread-sheet so we could compare them all, and we chose Emerald which we felt would offer us the best value for our money. We were not disappointed in our choice. I would not hesitate to recommend them, and will no doubt use Emerald Waterways again! Read Less

We took a Danube's Delight cruise with Emerald Waterways and enjoyed every second of it. We were picked up from Munich airport and taken straight to the ship, Emerald Sun, at Nuremberg. From the moment we set foot onboard, the staff could not do enough to help us. We were welcomed with drinks and smiles, and taken to our cabin, which was a good size with a double bed and more than adequate ensuite bathroom. Having been on sea cruises before, with tiny cabins, our cabin on the Emerald Sun was a very pleasant surprise, both in terms of size and the included toiletries - shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion etc. The cruise took us down the Danube Main Canal to the Danube river from Nuremberg to Budapest. The first full day included stop offs in Passau and Regensberg, but we were happy to sit up top and watch the fantastic scenery go by. We also stopped at Linz and Melk before reaching Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, where we had a full day in each city. At each city there was a walking and/or coach tour included at no extra cost, and fantastic, knowledgeable guides to take us around the sites, and outline the history of the area. We had small receivers with ear phones in our cabins and these were used for each tour, connected to the guide's microphone, so they didn't have to shout to be heard above other guides in the area. On board there was a lovely dining room, with a great range of meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had two special five-course meals whilst on board, with exquisite food and wine. Again the staff were amazing in both their knowledge and service. In the lounge, there was a bar with a great range of branded drinks and a piano player providing entertainment. Drinks were included with meals but we chose to upgrade to a premium drinks package, so had unlimited drinks for an additional 19.90 euros per person, per day. Well worth doing. There was also additional entertainment with an Oompa band joining us for an evening in Austria and a Hungarian folk band in Budapest. The ship's crew also provided an entertaining show of sketches, tricks and songs one evening. We really enjoyed the cruise - more so than the sea cruise we had been on previously. There were a range of passengers on board from the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Jamaica, Israel as well as other nations - a great mix who got on very well together. The age range was predominantly 40+, with some younger passengers but not many. We would definitely recommend this type of holiday to truly relax, see amazing scenery and explore some truly magnificent places. One of the best holidays we've ever had, in terms of service, destinations, accommodation and overall enjoyment. Read Less

We are experience ocean cruisers having taken 18 of them in different parts of the world. We've cruise on luxury, near luxury and premium cruise lines and we wanted to try something different. We were more than satisfied by our river cruise experience. Emerald staff were eager to please, help was everywhere, the tour guides were mostly very good (they use the same guides as Scenic). The ship is only one year old, beds were comfortable, storage was adequate, amenities were better than most lines and we did enjoy the pool. Dinner & lunch food were between very good to average. Breakfasts were very good. Included beer was very good but wine was only fair. Optional drinks were expensive. Surprisingly the crew show was quite entertaining. Local entertainment was fine. The enrichment tour of a visit to a home in Bratislava was a great experience. We also enjoyed the private concert in Vienna. Overall, we would take another river cruise with Emerald. Read Less
