Once we arrived in Nuremberg we were greeted at the airport by our transfer. Since we arrived in Nuremberg at 5:30 am we had a few hours to spare before we could board the ship. Our driver gave us a private tour of his city and took us to his favorite bratwurst stand and treated us to lunch. Once we arrived at the ship our room was waiting for us, it met all of our expectations and then some. Dining at 7 was not a problem for us nor did we feel rushed, we had plenty of time to enjoy our dinner and converse afterward. We also did not find the dining room noisy as others may have. If anything it was people meeting new friends from all over the world and having a great time together. Compared to the large cruise ships that get very noisy, I prefer the smaller ships any day. We did participate in some of the on board activities and enjoyed them very much. The rooms are very sound proof, we could not hear music or noise coming from any late entertainment, which I think the latest ended around 11 each evening, if that late. The off shore excursions and tours were all led by very knowledgeable tour guides and were not rushed. We had ample time to browse around or shop after touring each city. After a very nice, relaxing breakfast and a goodbye visit with our new friends we were timely transported to the Amsterdam airport. We went to Paris for a few days after our cruise, which was on a much faster pace. We were both wishing we had gone to Paris first then the cruise, it was so relaxing! The crew and staff of the Emerald Sun are all assets to this cruise line, they provided us with the best service around! Thank you all so very much for making our cruise the highlight of our trip to Europe! Read Less

The river cruise was part of an Italy to UK holiday. From the time we arrived in Budapest from Rome we were assisted in everyway and transported on to our ship in a very well organised manner. Once on board the perfect organisation took over. Great cabin, most meals, entertainment and shore excursions all went like clockwork without being rushed. Fourteen days of wonderful May/June weather, great places to see through Hungary, Slovakia, Bavaria and Holland and a delightful, happy group of passengers who all made the most of what was on offer. Food was well supplied and catering excellently organised by well trained and friendly staff working to a faultless and precise system. The one downside was the evening dinner which to many of our group was too fussy and decorative - not really very tasty food that most passengers had been used to and sometimes a little over the top and of questionable quantity. Breakfast and lunch were more traditional and certainly sufficient so not many complaints for these two. So, an excellent and memorable cruise and we would do again give half a chance. Read Less

Very good itinerary, visiting some fabulous places which were enriched by the guided tours at each location. The ship was very well appointed and very comfortable. The modern feel to the design and furnishings was appreciated. Excellent service on board and on the excursions. A particular note of appreciation must go to Wes, the cruise director, who was very visible throughout and was informative and had a humorous and light touch to his organisational role. The bike ride was a welcome addition to the cruise itinerary, offering the opportunity to cycle through some beautiful countryside and get a bit of exercise as well. My only criticism would be about the food on board. It was "OK" but really not up to the standard that I'd expect on a cruise of this quality. The staff were all great but I'd not recommend our cruise if you're look for fine dining or anything approaching that. Read Less

Choosing the Danube Delights river cruise enable my husband and I to visit several cities in Europe that we hadn't before and how pleased we both were. We had never taken a cruise before and was excited to give it a go. What a wonderful experience it turned out to be from the moment we embarked in Budapest to the disembarkment in Nuremberg it couldn't have been better. Our ship was beautiful and much more spacious than expected. Our cabin was surprisingly spacious and well equipped for our comfort. Spotlessly clean and well serviced every day. Dining aboard was excellent and the service second to none. The staff or should I say crew aboard could not have been more helpful and attentive. The daily programme or itinerary was comprehensive and well planned. The evening entertainment was just enough after our busy time on our shore excursions which again was very professionally done and interesting. We saw some amazing sights along the way and thoroughly enjoyed our Discover More events. Our only regret was that we only had eight days...had we known how exceptionally fantastic this way of travelling was we wished we had stayed on longer! And yes, we will certainly be travelling again with Emerald Waterways. Read Less

Chose because we thought it was more upmarket than others and paid over £4000 for 2. Cruise director and waiters tried hard but were let down by company procedures on food and visits. Chef found it hard to deviate from the company pictures of plates of food that they showed us when we complained. Chef found it hard to understand that spice and gluten were not to be included in our diet. 3 conversations later we started to make some headway. However, their interpretation of gluten free items particularly cakes and bread left very much to be desired. Suggest you take your own! There were too many days moored alongside other river boats. When you have one either side, why do you need a panoramic balcony stateroom? The cabin goes into semi darkness and you just as well be below water line! What is a balcony? Be careful if you think it is where you can sit outside (cabin side) and watch the river flow-it is not. It is a large window and 2 chairs and a table inside your cabin. The highlight was going to be kerkenhof gardens. We were allowed 2 1/2 hours there only! The captains gala dinner was a non event..no different from any other dinner, except, you were presented with a splash of some fizzy wine that just wetted the bottom of the glass-same both dinners-pathetic. We chose this cruise because I have always wanted to see the tulips at Keukenhof Gardens and what a display they have, not just of tulips but all the flowers are just so wonderful and you just cannot believe the colours and the size of them. The orchid house was so so beautiful, you could just be in that for hours let alone walking round the outside. A must if you really like your garden and flowers, cannot wait to get the tulips I ordered in October and plant them in my own garden to remember the gardens. Also Amsterdam and Antwerp are cities we had not visited so it was a good chance to explore them also, plus the excursions all sounded so interesting and were. Arnhem where we visited the Airborne Museum which is dedicated to the battle of Arnhem in 1944 was so good plus the war cemetery, was very moving. It was a busy 7 days but we so enjoyed it plus meeting new people most in our age group was great. All service, food and staff are wonderful a friendly smile no matter what time of day it is. We really hope to book and go on another one next year making it our 3rd with Emerald , really nothing is to much trouble for them. Read Less

My wife did extensive research with emerald and several other cruise companies and found that emerald was closest to our ideal , the frosting on the cake was that all tips and taxes were included. The flights arranged and meeting at airport efficient and easy . Coach ready and then our luggage was taken care of and next saw them in our cabin. Same on homeward journey arrangements transfer and Ie plane boarding check in all handled efficiently. Biggest praise was for the staff and crew. All were always cheerful and pro active in their approach. Efficient, rembering our names , polite friendly service was smooth but not intrusive. Cruise director Nina van Loon very personable and helpful interesting talks and info. And shore excursions well balanced for all age types and plenty of free exploring or resting time, excellent choice of locations. Boat was smooth and quiet and well maintained could hardly feel any motion. All in all we are sold on river cruising and particularly Emerald and look forward to booking with them again. Read Less

As regular ocean cruisers we decided to try something different. We were not disappointed - this Danube, Mainz, Rhine cruise ticked all the boxes for a small ship. Great food, interesting mix of people and very efficient crew. One of the highlights was a tour of the galley which was something of an eye-opener. How five crew members worked in such a confined space producing such excellent food was a miracle! All the tours were efficiently organised and the innovative communication system recently introduced worked extremely well - all the guides raved about it! Destinations were all well worth the visit with usually sufficient free time to explore. The 'extra' tours/trips which included a visit to the Schonbrun Palace and a private concert in Vienna were excellent. Richard Grey the Tour Director was the best we had ever encountered on any of our previous ocean cruises. The only downside to the whole trip was the mayhem at Heathrow which would probably put us off from doing a similar holiday again unless Eurostar was an option. Otherwise, a most enjoyable two weeks which probably surpassed our expectations. Read Less

We were a group of 8 friends who decided to do a river cruise. We chose Evergreen as it was an Aussie company and it fit everyone's different budgets. My husband and I were lucky enough to book the owners suite and it was absolutely worth every penny. The room was like a 6 star hotel, amazing! It was all of the little extras that made it so memorable. The cruise itself was so well organised and suited everyone. You had so many options. You could be on an organised tour or just experience the different places on your own. The optional tours were well thought out, we did 4 of them and each one was well worth the extra. The food! Fabulous - 4 course meal every night. The wines that went with each meal were local wines and were just great, all included - I don't think my glass was ever empty :) buffets were plentiful and there was something for everyone. Breakfast - well, delicious! A chef waiting for you to cook your eggs just the way you wanted. The staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble. My husband and I were looking to buy a cuckoo clock in Germany and the staff were very knowledgeable about the different shops to look at and we found the perfect clock! Each place we stopped had a tour that you could do. Evergreen use local guides and they were all amazing. The best part about doing a river cruise is unpacking once, Europe comes to you! We can't wait for our next river cruise, only problem, which one to choose :) Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to experience the Danube from Budapest to the Danube Delta. We also wanted to see something of the 5 countries we would be travelling through namely Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary. An added bonus was the opportunity to hear the first hand experiences of some of the war correspondents who reported on the Bosnia and Homeland Wars that took place in the 1990's. The cruise did not disappoint us as the standard of everything provided by Emerald Waterways was first class. The condition of the ship was such that it could have been on its maiden voyage. The food onboard was very good indeed and the service throughout the cruise was also very good. A special mention must be made of the Cruise Director who was absolutely brilliant. Emerald Waterways are lucky to have such a competent and charismatic person on their staff. Read Less

Because of the theme of war on the Danube and the calibre of the speakers - Martin Bell particularly, also Nick Thorpe and John Simpson. It was an excellent and fascinating tour from Budapest to Bucharest visiting Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. Fascinating talks from Martin Bell and the lectures both onboard and on our land excursions. Great group of fellow travellers, excellent food and we had a very good time. The crew onboard were superb - everything ran like clockwork and our tour manager Jana was excellent in organising all we needed to do and enjoy. We had not done a cruise like this before so did not know what to expect and I think it exceeded our expectations in being both enjoyable and informative. The food was excellent and the chef Andras and all the staff on board kept the boat clean and very comfortable. It was a very interesting and enjoyable experience. Read Less

The Danube travelling towards the Black Sea included many countries we had not visited, but the real reason was the inclusion of war correspondents lecturing and so adding to the experience . Of the3, Martin Bell (who travelled with us) was superb: 4 lectures of appropriate length and content, delivered with video clips to make the whole thing 'come alive' as we travelled the troubled regions of the former Yugoslavia. His last talk was very light-hearted: Politics and Poetry. Sadly, the lectures from the other 2 reporters were not up to the same standard. The boat was new, so rooms seemed even smaller. Service was excellent, although the food was inconsistent and a little too novel cuisine at times. Tours were generally very good, although a great deal depended on which local guide you ended up with - standards of English and input both variable. More activities on board would have been welcomed during the sailing day. The disappointment was no time in Budapest, and the 2 days in Bucharest. After a well organised cruise, things just weren't of the same standard (although the hotel was fine) Visits and catering outside of the hotel both left much to be desired. The overall experience was very good - not least due to the cruise director, Jana. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the speakers - John Simpson, Martin Bell and Nick Thorpe. Most nights we were treated to informative and entertaining talks. The standard of accommodation was excellent. Dining could be described as 4 star - consistently good and well balanced throughout the week. We were very impressed by the meticulous planning of the activities and prompt timekeeping. Regarding the local guides, they were all first rate, knowledgeable and approachable with a good command of English. Most of the on shore visits were of interest but some were weak. However, it must be difficult to find venues at the very end of the season. There was a small swimming pool with current to swim against and bicycles on board to use at each port. We would be happy to recommend Emerald to others and would also consider cruising with them again. We would probably choose a different stretch of river. Read Less

As we had previously cruised north on the Danube from Novi Sad to Vienna we decided we would like to cruise south towards the Black Sea on another cruise. The cruise with the war correspondents clinched it. We loved the ship but found the dining room very noisy, hard for me as I am hard of hearing. Some more soft furnishings and may be fewer passengers would have made it better. The food was interesting and excellent. I have a mushroom allergy and every day I received a personal menu in the cabin during the morning with dishes I couldn't eat highlighted. My husband and I both celebrated our birthdays and were treated to a cake and firework at dinner and special towel sculptures and a card in the cabin. The cabin was spacious and the drop-down window useful when taking photos but the weather was not good enough to take full advantage of that facility. As we arrived at the ship very late due to flight delays we missed the briefing and no one offered a "catchup" one so we had to find out a few things for ourselves. We did not find the tissues in the cabin until asking for some the second day and we were told they were in the cupboard in the bath room which was hidden behind the mirror- not at all obvious! We tended to go to bed later than most other guests and twice could not use the coffee machine in the lounge after 11pm as it was being cleaned but we could have waited 20 minutes if we had been desperate. The service was efficient and organisation by the cruise director excellent. The excursions were well organised with excellent guides with radio mikes speaking into our head sets which were provided in the cabin. If you like swimming you may be pleased there is a pool but put off by the size of it. I think Emerald do themselves a disservice by not stating anywhere that the pool has a powerful jet feature from one end that you can swim against. I am a good swimmer and could beat it doing front crawl but for back stroke it held me in the middle of the pool and I could keep going as long as I liked and was able to feel I had had a good swim. We chose this cruise because of the inclusion of talks by leading correspondents - Nick Thorpe, Martin Bell and John Simpson. The cruise itself was very good. A fine, new vessel with a committed, competent and friendly crew. Administration was efficient and our cruise director always kept us well briefed. The onshore activities at the various stops were all interesting, if not always riveting because of limited choice of things to do around eastern Danube ports. The buses used were all comfortable and the local guides were knowledgeable. The material provided by the correspondents added much context. The onboard entertainment was enjoyable and provided local colour. Our cabins were well appointed and comfortable and the food and wine were first rate. The hotels used in Budapest and Bucharest were adequate, rather than good but that didn't really detract from our enjoyment. This was our first river cruise; it won't be our last. Read Less

Overview This was a first time river cruise for us and were attracted to it by the presence of Martin Bell and John Simpson relating their experiences of reporting for the BBC on the unrest and war events that have covered the Balkan region through the last 25/30 years. We travelled from Budapest to Bucharest through five countries and as a consequence of their presentations had significant added value to all of the shore excursions which were varied, interesting and very relevant. It thus provided us with a more in depth understanding of the history of this region and considerably enhanced our enjoyment of the cruise. The Ship We felt that the Ship, which is just over a year old, was spacious well appointed and offered excellent facilities for a 7-10 day cruise. The staff on board were always cheerful and helpful. Above all, they were excellent in the service they provided. Pre/Post Cruise We did not have a pre-cruise stay in Budapest but had a two day stop in Bucharest which was included in the overall cruise package. We had the benefit of two guided tours of Bucharest which gave us a good insight into the City and what it offers, and will probably think about a longer City break at some time. Food The food on board was plentiful, varied and freshly prepared each day. There was no excuse for being hungry with ample choices for breakfast, four courses for lunch and dinner, with afternoon tea and late night snacks for those that really got peckish. We took advantage of the opportunity to tour the kitchen with the head chef who explained the daily routines for ensuring that the excellent quality was maintained. Excursions These were well thought out and relevant to the theme of the cruise. The value of the excursions was considerably enhanced by the quality of the tour guides. On all our tours we had well informed, knowledgeable tour guides who had great personalities, a sense of humour, spoke clearly in English and were keen to ensure we got the most out of the visit. Service First class by all staff. Going again Have already booked another cruise with Emerald. Any Negatives We have a need for specialist diets and in this respect we had the menus on a daily basis marked up with all allergens. These were a bit confusing and we found the best course of action was to discuss with the Head Waiter at lunch and dinner, who was more than helpful in providing clarifications and ensuring that appropriate alternatives were provided. This did not always translate to shore excursions and in some cases the options were very basic and limited. Read Less

I have just returned from a week's cruise on the Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest. This is my second river cruise. The first being on The Nile, 9 years ago. The ship was lovely. Well appointed and spotlessly clean. Our cabin was luxurious and comfortable and we received a free upgrade. Many people we met had also been upgraded which leads me to believe that this is Emerald policy if they have empty rooms - and a good one! My only criticism about the accommodation is that the lounge and dining room were not big enough for the number of people on the ship and it was difficult to fit everyone in. You were often left looking around for a table at meal times and we had to get to the restaurant early and queue to ensure that we got a table that accommodated 6 people. We chose to eat in the lounge area for lunch because it was more relaxing. Had the weather been better, I expect that the top, outdoor deck would have been utilised more relieving pressure on the other rooms but this wouldn't make any difference at dinner time and in the evenings. Food was plentiful and of very good quality but the wines on offer could have been better. We did, eventually, find a wine that suited us but always had to ask for it specifically and often wait for it to be found. It was nice to have the option to eat in the dining room or the lounge. Several members of our party chose the 20 euros per day drinks package. This was excellent value for money but, sadly, didn't include sparkling wine. Entertainment was low key. There were two external and two in-house shows. All were very good. It would have been nice to have a show of some sort after dinner each evening, too. The pianist in the evenings was excellent but little variation. Service across the board was excellent. The staff work as a team and are an asset to the company. We were invited to dine with the Captain one evening, which was a wonderful experience, and my brother-in-law, who celebrated his birthday on the same day, was made to feel special leading to a great evening. Shore excursions were good. All of the guides were helpful and spoke very good English. However, the walks were very short. Our group had an average age of 63 but found them too easy. It seemed that they were geared for older people (the average age on the ship must have been about 70). Overall, we had a great time. We saw lots and had many laughs. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't always kind to us but that's how it goes. If I were to go on a river cruise again, I would certainly choose Emerald as I know that they would give me a quality experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was on a small ship and on a river - the Danube - which we have never visited before and which looked varied and interesting. The facilities looked luxurious and the package looked good value for money. Everything lived up to our expectations and more. Emerald Sun is new for 2016 and a remarkable piece of naval engineering: much of the top deck structures raised and lowered to accommodate bridge heights and water levels. Our cabin was splendid - large bed, plenty of storage and hanging space, spacious en suite shower room and a miraculous balcony with a glass panel we could lower to be in the open air. We appreciated the Nespresso machine, too. Public areas of the ship are spacious and comfortable. I particularly liked the swimming pool which is small but has an infinity wave machine so you can swim against resistance as far as you like, but remain in the same spot - bit weird looking out at the river. Food is plentiful and varied with buffet arrangements for breakfast and lunch. Eggs and omelettes are cooked to order at breakfast and there's an endless supply of anything else you might want to eat. Lunch and dinner are both four courses and wine, beer and soft drinks are included with both. Tea and coffee are available all the time in the Horizon Lounge. I was a bit disappointed with the 'vegetarian' offerings but then I always am, believing that there are few chefs who can cater for veggies. I do eat fish, however, and there was always a fish dish. Perhaps the best thing about the whole trip were the shore excursions, with at least one each day included in the price. They are thoughtfully organised so you are back in time for lunch: this meant we spent hardly anything during the holiday. Entertainment was varied, if a bit predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. This was our 2nd Emerald cruise, this time it was The Danube cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest. We arrived at Munich airport to a well organised transfer to the ship. Slight delay boarding so we were well looked after with refreshments at a local hotel. The cabins on board are excellent, with a high comfort factor, very nicely appointed with large flat screen TV, hairdryer, robes. We were on a lower deck, with no balcony. It was fine, the window allowed river views so we could see the weather conditions! No engine noise, just some shuddering when docking. The lounge bar is very comfortable, although a personal preference would be for the furnishings off its sister ship. The sofas are very deep, not the best for short people and those with mobility problems. Staff are superb, regardless of department. Some are absolutely outstanding. The cruise director was excellent, informative & helpful. The restaurant, wow, what can I say, except I'm now dieting! The cuisine was amazing, great choice at all mealtimes, whether it be a light bight in the lounge or a 5 course Gala dinner. No complaints, only compliments to the chef, his team and restaurant staff. Always delicious wines to compliment both lunch & dinner. The included excursions were well organised, informative and enjoyable. However there were occasions when a member of our party could not participate due to mobility problems. This was usually due to being docked alongside other vessels and having to cross over boats. If it meant crossing from the sun terrace onto another boat, then there is no elevator to the top deck. Also other boats may not have elevators at all. We've already booked our next river cruise with Emerald, exceptional holidays. Read Less

First river cruise and loved it. Enjoyed the friendly atmosphere with crew and cruisers. Arrived in Nuremberg 2 days before sailing. Flew to Munich from Toronto. Took Flixibus to Nuremberg (2 hour drive). Ate some great food (bratwurst and sauerkraut, pretzel, gingerbread) and drank some dark beer. Embarkation was smooth. Arrived at 2:30 p.m. by taxi (15 minute drive, 20 euros). Friendly welcome by crew members. The cabin was small but had good storage space. The lounge was big, quiet, a relaxing meeting place. I would sit in one of the comfy sofas with a cup of coffee from their beverage corner and write in my journal. The dining room had a variety of seating arrangements. A chance to socialize with other cruisers and have a great meal. The soups and cheeses were delicious. The entertainment in the evening was George the piano player or you could hang out in the front/outside of the lounge and enjoy the view. If it was chilly they had heaters over the sofas to warm you up. One evening they had a crew show, very funny. I enjoyed the shore excursions, informative guides. The tours were only a few hours so never tiring. Always time in the afternoon for a dip in the pool or a short nap. The best part was the crew. Love, love, love them! Great experience! We chose this cruise as we had not done a river cruise before and the Delights of the Danube for seven nights seemed to be just what we were looking for. However, we were very disappointed by the poor quality food and lack of choice, fine dining it was not and on a cruise you expect the food to be memorable, this was for all the wrong reasons. The dress code of smart casual for dinner was not adhered to with many passengers wearing shorts, t shirts and flip flops in the dining room. Such attire is fine in the day, but not in the evening and is not acceptable. The food, poor entertainment and dress code are areas that need to be improved in order to get returning customers. I am afraid that we will not return to cruise with Emerald and from speaking to many of the British passengers it seems that many share my views. My only complaint was that we had to fly with Easy Jet which I thought was not impressive for such a costly holiday although we were given Speedy Boarder passes which compensated a bit! We were met at the airport immediately we got to the Arrivals area and whisked away in a car to the ship. Embarkation was so easy and we were thrilled when we saw our cabin with the open air balcony with the amazing view of the Hungarian Parliament Building. On the first evening we were treated to a cruise to see the city by night. Every day was special in it's own way, waking up in a new place having cruised overnight was great and then daytime cruising towards the end of the week offered a relaxing way to see the river and the sights. The staff were wonderful especially Jana the cruise director who deserves a special mention. The local guides were fantastic, so knowledgeable and so proud to show guests around their cities. A visit to a Slovakian family home for an afternoon with coffee, cake and wine was one of the highlights of the week. Overall the food was really good, always fresh and well presented with plenty of choice and drinks whenever you wanted them with the meals. You can choose from tables of two, four, six and eight so it is easy to get to know other people on the boat. The evening entertainment was okay, perhaps the only thing that could be improved upon. We will definitely be looking to do another cruise and wouldn't hesitate to go back to Emerald Waterways. Read Less
