This was our 40th anniversary trip & our first River Cruise. From beginning to end, it was superb! We had WONDERFUL weather, great tour guides, excellent accommodations, & awesome Viking staff! We were treated to an anniversary serenade & dessert at dinner 2 hrs after embarkation! On the last evening on board, I asked HOW the staff knew who we were, and they chuckled as to how they pulled it off(at check in, the desk staff sneaked a picture of us-unbeknownst to us, and the walked the dining room to find us, then notified the Maitre D where we were sitting!). We made lots of friends that we will hopefully keep in touch with after the trip! In hindsight, we wished we had extended our trip at BOTH ends, Budapest and Amsterdam, as we didn't know what to expect, and wished we could have spent more time in BOTH cities. Glass blower had a demo on the boat- AWESOME! We have shared our trip memories with family & friends & would DEFINITELY do it again. My sister & her best friend (& both spouses), have already booked a Viking River cruise for next summer (on our strong recommendation)! The staff also helped me surprise my husband by celebrating his birthday which also happened to fall during our cruise! We enjoyed the included tours and also booked several extra tours that were also a great value! We felt like royalty in our mini suite! Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and we could not have been more pleased. The crew of the Ingvi went out of their way to may this cruise a memorable experience. Because the number of passengers is small, we got to know many of the other passengers and everyone raved about the customer service, food, individual assistance, and daily shore excursions. The entire cruise is very organized. Someone said it is like a Swiss watch times 100. Disembarkation was effortless and all questions were answered before I even had the chance to ask them. I highly recommend this ship and its crew. The daily tours were very historical, with beautiful scenery and knowledgeable tour guides. There was usually plenty of time to tour on our own after the guides part. Special arrangements were made for guests with difficultly keeping up. The food was near gourmet quality and the servers were great. They quickly learned each travelers likes and dislikes and often made recommendations based on that. Every evening the crew held a meeting that explained what to expect the next day and what their recommendations were for that evening meal. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, but because of the experience we had, it will not be our last. From the time that we got on the ship, it was obvious that the crew was well trained in customer service and they went out of their way to make sure our cruise was special. Our cabin was small but very functional and even had heated flooring in the bathroom. The ship itself was wonderful and the ride so smooth that I used the upper rail for a camera tripod. The food was very good and the daily excursions were informative and tailored to suit the abilities of each customer. For the people with some restrictions, they had special tours. All questions were immediately answered by the front desk or the concierge and she was the most caring and helpful that I have ever worked with. The capacity of the ship is less than 300 and it has open dining, so you will meet many of the other travelers and likely make many new friends. I highly recommend the Viking River Cruise and especially the Viking Ingvi crew. Read Less

Kudos to the staff and crew of the Viking ship Ingvi! We embarked on the Ingvi on July 16, 2016 and from the moment we boarded the vessel to the moment we left, we have nothing but rave reviews for their excellent service, professional demeanor and personal interactions. The embarkation process, including transfer to the boat from the airport, boarding and accommodation while we waited for our cabin to be prepared (we arrived very early, so passengers from the previous cruise were still disembarking), was extremely smooth. During that process, we got acquainted with the reception desk staff, Nikolina, Viktoria and Alexsandre, as well as the Hotel Manager, Krisztina, folks who we would see and talk to daily throughout the cruise. Within a few days they knew us by name AND cabin number and always cheerfully assisted us with whatever issues we were having at the time. The issues that arose were generally procedural items: - Collecting shore cards pre-excursions - Swapping out audio devices for the excursions when we forgot to recharge overnight - Questions about onboard scheduling As it was raining when we got on the ship (the only one thing that the Ingvi staff seemed to be unable to control), we were only willing to tour the interior parts of the ship, initially. From the get-go, the ship seemed to be extremely clean and tidy, well managed and classy. Our opinion of this aspect of the ship never wavered, as the ship was perfectly maintained throughout the voyage. We met our cabin attendant, Benjamin, almost immediately upon being given access to our cabin. He was very personable, always with a smile and pleasant word. He did a wonderful job maintaining the cleanliness of the room and providing us with pleasant surprises like bedtime chocolates and towel origami (he left us with several animals assembled entirely from bath towels, including an elephant and bulldog). One feeling you will never experience if you take a Viking cruise is one of hunger. The dining experience aboard the Ingvi was exceptional. From the selection, quality and flavor of food, to the service, we were never left wanting. Mostly because, if you found yourself wanting anything, there was always a member of the staff, from our maître d'hôtel, Nina, to our many servers, including Marlon, Alexandru, Joanna, Richard, and even the executive chef, Denes, to address your desire immediately. As we sailed from country to country, the cuisine included regional specialities, in addition to many alternate selections. The regional specialities included foods like: Hungarian goulash and Dobas torté, German bratwurst and sauerkraut and Black Forest cake. All of the food was delicious and there wasn't a sugary treat that we didn't pass up! Not until the third day of the trip did we venture out onto the upper deck (it rained throughout our the first two days, so there was no reason to explore), where we were to spend hours at a time watching the scenery sail by. Like the interior of the ship, the exterior was extremely well maintained, with all passenger-accessible areas remaining organized and tidy throughout the cruise. The ship was in fantastic condition. The program director for our ship was Rob Wheatley from South Africa. He was fantastic. Extremely approachable, always amusing, he ran a very good program. From excursions to onboard entertainment, Rob coordinated all aspects of the experience. He was careful to explain the level of activity (or difficulty) of some of the excursions and was always prepared to offer alternate choices in town if the terrain was steep or included many steps that might prove difficult for some of the passengers. When describing the many optional excursions, he provided objective information about each, never pushing any of the excursions on us. Rob made sure that every passenger was able to participate in the activities of their choosing. The evening and nightly entertainment was provided by a gifted musician from Hungary, Danny. During cocktail hours before and after dinner, he would fill the lounge with beautiful piano music. He played a wide variety of styles, ranging from classical and easy listening music while people were quietly enjoying cocktails, to upbeat jazz and rock songs that people could sing along with and dance to late into the night. We love to dance, and he seemed to revel in playing dance music for us, ranging from slow waltzes and foxtrots to upbeat swings and cha-chas. Danny came prepared, but was open to any song suggestions made. How wonderful to have such an amazing pianist with us the entire cruise! In addition to Danny, our program director arranged for some unique local entertainment, including a Klesmer group, glass-blowing demonstration, and a classical duo, piano and violin, who knocked our socks off with their amazing performances! The Grand European Tour was truly spectacular with the ports of call and excursions that were offered, both included and optional. The included walking tours were led by guides that were extremely knowledgeable and eager to share information about the people, the history, and the culture of the cities. They would add personal anecdotes to help the information come alive to us. Viking did a fabulous job of not just showing us beautiful cities, but helped us learn and understand more about the cities we were viewing. Optional excursions were varied and included musical concerts, food, wine or beer tastings, castle visits, museums, and even other nearby cities not on the standard itinerary like Salzburg or Munich. Our favorite was the Top of the Town tour in Cologne, where we were taken to the top of the cathedral, inside and outside, and were provided with an incredible history of the cathedral as well as breathtaking views of the city from on high. By the time we disembarked from the ship two weeks later, we felt as if we were family of most of the staff. They truly went above and beyond in their service to guests, to us. They genuinely seemed happy to help us with any needs that we had. The staff usually anticipated any needs and had provided us with most things before we even had to ask. They far exceeded any expectations we had coming onto the ship. The services they provided and the attention they gave us were personalized and individualized. Upon leaving the ship, we found ourselves saddened to leave our new family members, the staff, and even shed a few tears knowing how much we would miss them. Now that our cruise is over, and we reflect on our amazing vacation, we are most grateful for having selected Viking as our cruise line. The top of the line service, memorable staff, amazing excursions, and fantastic ship all contributed in making memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Viking! We look forward to our next adventure with you! Read Less

I have always wanted to go on a Viking Cruise - the ships always seem very luxurious. There was an itinerary which attracted me - Amsterdam to Budapest - which I could just afford. My travel agent got me a good deal so I was hooked. The cruise was all I expected and more. My cabin was small but all I ever use such accommodation for is a bed, a shower and somewhere to hang my clothes. It fitted all these and was cleaned every day. Indeed the whole staff were always helpful and cheerful. The food was top of the range. There was not a bad meal from breakfast through lunch to dinner. There was no set table so you could move among the guests as you wish. The choice of meal was usually three starters (At lunch this was a serve yourself choice) although you could have what was on the menu. There followed three main courses including a vegetarian choice each day and the desert was usually a calorie uncontrolled delight. At lunch and dinner you were offered wine / beer / soft drinks of your choice none of which were stinted. If all this was too much there was a separate dining area which served much simpler food. The entertainment was fairly simple - an excellent pianist plus the occasional local singers and/or dancers during an evening. There was an included trip at each port of call plus, if you wanted additional trips at a cost. Some of them I felt were a little highly priced. One or two of the trips could do with a review as they either duplicated an earlier trip or were not quite how they were described in the brochure. I understand some of them were new expeditions which may account for their slight failings. We were occasionally held up at locks and for five days we could not go on the upper sun deck because of the height of the river and the lowness of the bridges. My one regret. I had looked forward to being sat on the upper deck at the Chain Bridge in Budapest at night but, out of the control of Viking, it was the weekend of the Red Bull Acrobatic Plane Race and, because of "Health and Safety" we had to park quite some distance from the centre of the city and I didn't chance to do this. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend it to every one. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and it was absolutely amazing. Another couple we met on an ocean cruise and two other couples invited us along. River cruises are certainly more expensive than ocean ones but it was worth every cent. We went from Amsterdam down to Budapest and loved every day. The ship is beautifully appointed in that sleek European style and spotless. We loved the intimacy as there were only 180 guests as opposed to the 800-1800 we usually cruise with. The staff were all outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure we all had a great experience. They were like friends by the end of our tour. At every stop there were excursions which were included with our ticket and were top notch. Viking hires excellent and very knowledgeable guides. The great thing is we were divided into small groups rather than being herded onto big buses which is often the case on ocean cruise excursions. Oh, and let's not forget about the excellent meals! We had a talented and very gregarious Greek chef who created unforgettable dining experiences at every meal. The quality of the food was superior to that on the ocean liners. The entertainment, however, was not the same as what you get on the ocean cruises however due to the smaller venue but what they did provide was great. Besides since you are in a different port every day there are no days at sea to recouperate so we wouldn't have wanted events every night. When we came home friends asked what was our favourite stop and we had to say they all were! All in all we had a fabulous time and definitely plan on doing it again. There is a lot to be said to being on a river and looking out at all the little towns as you float to your next destination. Great job Viking! You deserve your stellar reputation. Read Less

My husband had always wanted to do a Danube River cruise [ Grand European Tour ] from Budapest to Amsterdam. We had in previous years seen many of the land areas and decided to see the wetter side. This was our third cruise with Viking. This ship and the one we had cruised on in the Netherlands, was a little smaller than our cruise on the Yangtze river in China. Over all, the space was a little less but fine. The entire crew and service was excellent. They participated in the activities with the passengers and there was always someone close at hand when we were out on a tour conducted by a local guide. In preparation for the tour, Viking sent us a ' learn to say a few phrases ' video in each of the languages/countries we visited. Although many of the locals we met spoke English [ as a 2nd or 3rd language ], it helped in 'bonding' when we at least tried to say Hello or Thank you. Read Less

Have you ever wanted to pinch yourself to see if you were having a dream? That is exactly how I felt when I arrived in Budapest, Hungary. While I had been to Europe on three previous occasions, this trip was vastly different. After forty ocean cruises, my Dad and I were embarking on our first Viking River Cruise adventure, aboard the beautiful Viking Ingvi longship. Although it wasn’t a dream, the storybook landscapes did resemble a fairy tale! From Hungary to Austria and Germany to the Netherlands, we listened to magnificent philharmonic orchestras, explored the inside of castles and windmills, and tasted delightful delicacies. If you want to feel like royalty, take the Grand European Tour with Viking River Cruises. They treat passengers like Kings and Queens! Before the sun went down on our first evening aboard the Ingvi, we enjoyed our first Viking River Cruise dinner experience. It was simply incredible. I chose the Hungarian Farmer’s Plate for my first course, the Hungarian Goulash for my second course, and Hungarian layer cake for my dessert. The perfect meal to eat while in Hungary (or in any other part of the globe – it was amazing). Following our marvelous meal, the Captain took the entire longship for a sightseeing cruise to see the lights of the city. Budapest is so beautiful at night, with all of the buildings lit up! What an incredible sight to see! On the second evening, the Captain held a welcome aboard party that evening as a prelude to dinner. My menu selections included the potato crusted mascarpone cheese with a truffle sabayon sauce for my first course, Chateaubriand with buttered vegetables, potatoes, and a béarnaise sauce for my entrée, and a strawberry sponge cake for dessert. It was the perfect way to end another perfect day. The ship became a family in virtually no time at all. The majority of crew members knew our names by the second day of the cruise. The Viking Ingvi Crew provided excellent service. From Csaba, the Bar Chef, to Krisztina, the Hotel Manager, and of course, Rob, the Program Director, Tamara, the Concierge, Vivijen, the Receptionist, Daniel, the Musician, Judit, Bar Waitress, and Bojana, the Maître D', all of the crew on board worked hard to ensure that our river cruise was nothing short of exceptional. Many others contributed to an phenomenal cruise as well. Their meticulous service is very much appreciated. Many of the crew members became friends over the course of our two-week sailing. As a little girl, I dreamed of going to Austria, home of The Sound of Music. Now, as a young woman, my wish was fulfilled. We spent three days in this beautiful country, beginning with a scenic sail through scenery that made me want to sing out, “The hills are alive…” Well, you get the picture. The first part of the day found us dining on delicious meals, watching an apple strudel demonstration, and viewing remarkable scenery. Following a wonderful meal and a delightful “day at river,” we sprung for the Mozart and Strauss Concert that evening. Sitting on the front row of Schubert Hall, I was captivated by the excellent musicianship and talent that exuded from the platform as the Vienna Residence Orchestra performed. To welcome us back on the ship, the chef prepared Goulash soup and fresh baked bread as a late night snack, which was the perfect way to conclude a delightful evening. Break out your lederhosen and dirndls! The first stop in Bavaria is Passau, Germany, home of the world’s largest cathedral pipe organ, boasting more than 17,000 pipes! Thanks to Viking, we were able to attend a concert to hear this monstrous musical instrument being played. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, sharing a detailed history of the “Three Rivers City,” named for the three rivers that converge in Passau: the Danube, Inn, and Ilz Rivers. While Viking provides an excellent complimentary excursion in most ports, we chose to take the World War II tour in Nuremberg, Germany. As a Language Arts teacher, I am required to teach the Holocaust. Teaching this difficult subject becomes a little easier when I can share personal experiences with my students, such as touring Congress Hall and Courtroom 600, where the Nuremberg Trials were held. While this tour was quite the somber experience, our lovely tour guide has now become a dear friend. Fondly known as the glass blowing capital of the world, Wertheim is home to a multi-generational family of glass blowers, one of whom came on the ship to give a demonstration. It was always exciting to have local artisans and performers join us on the ship for quality entertainment. What a treat to be notified by the Viking Concierge that the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra was holding a free concert that afternoon! It was one of the most enjoyable concerts we experienced on our Grand European Tour. One of the most exciting dinners on board was the Viking Taste of Germany Dinner menu, including roast leg of port, bratwurst, tiroler knödel, sauerkraut, knödel, Viennese schnitzel, roast chicken, grilled käsekrainer, potato salad, and much more! Throughout this Grand European Tour, there were moments when goose bumps covered my arms, tears filled my eyes, and my heart was overwhelmed with joy. While my diary entries were scattered, at best, I am certain I will never forget the places we explored, the remarkable experiences we shared, and the many strangers we now call friends. My first Viking River Cruise etched indelible memories in my mind and effectively tugged on my heartstrings as well. As we received our customs form on the flight home, the reality of returning to the “real world,” began to sink in. Yet I encouraged myself with this thought: all good things must come to an end, so new ones can begin. So now the only question that remains is: when will I set sail with Viking once again? I invite you to view my full photo log of our trip at http://www.jennifersjourneys.net/photolog.html. I am happy to answer any questions you have concerning Viking River Cruises or the destinations we visited. I would love to hear your recommendations for future travel plans as well! The food aboard ship was outstanding. After a tour of the kitchen area, I don't know how such fine meals were produced in such a small space. Each night in the lounge we enjoyed games, entertainment and one night there was a glass blowing demonstration. I cannot say enough about the crew. It was a life long dream of my life partner to take this Grand European River cruise. After her retirement from 28 years of teaching, I decided to make her dream come true. Everything about this cruise was magical. From the longboat Viking Ingvi and it's smaller size ( about 200 guests) to the many small towns that we visited, it was a marvelous trip. The food and service were top notch. We really got to know all the crew and most of the friendly passengers. The daily excursions were well planned and completely safe. They prepared for all types of abilities. On board there were many extras such as a master glass blower showing his skills, then local German singers giving a spirited show. Then a guided tour topside as we cruised the beautiful German countryside. So many extras. We danced every night....and Wednesday was schnapps night. The best was the friendly, courteous and outstanding staff of the Ingvi. They made it a very special 2 weeks. I highly recommend starting in Amsterdam and ending in Budapest...the excitement just builds from day 1 to day 15. Worth paying extra for a veranda to sit outside with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. One suggestion: plan one or more extra nights before and after the cruise. It helps ease the airplane/airport pain. Read Less

We've been on one other river cruise (France) and loved it so much we were a little hesitant that this 14 day cruise might not be as nice. We shouldn't have worried. The ship was wonderful, the itinerary was wonderful and the entire Viking staff was amazing. Bottom line, we LOVED both the cruise line (Viking) and the itinerary (Grand European). We arrived at Budapest airport in the afternoon of boarding day and were greeted (along with a lot of other people) by representatives of various river cruise lines. After check-in, we boarded a bus and set off for the dock. It was a little "iffy" at first as the crew on the dock didn't seem to realize that there was a bus full of people arriving from the airport (and neither did the front desk staff as it took several minutes for someone to appear). After that, everything was absolutely seamless. We were shown to our cabin and then told a light lunch was being served. Of course it was the first day and everyone was exploring the ship and meeting each other, but the atmosphere was still calm and relaxed. The next day we awoke, ate breakfast and prepared for our included excursion. This was our only opportunity to explore Budapest but it gave us an overview and we were able to explore a little more, close to the boat, on our own in the afternoon. That evening, after dinner, the captain pulled away from the dock and gave us a brief cruise past the lights of Budapest. Beautiful! During the remainder of our cruise we enjoyed good weather which helped but what we really enjoyed was the itinerary itself -- absolutely wonderful. I never dreamed that a major river (the Danube) would be narrow enough to enjoy the passing countryside, almost at arm's length. The cities we visited were amazing and the included tours, for the most part were very enjoyable and gave you a good overview of the cities. The food and drinks on board were quite good and, while the serving sizes may be smaller than some are used to on cruise ships, I found it refreshing not to have to leave food on my plate because there was too much. Plus, if you wanted more, you received it! The buffets at breakfast and lunch were great and I loved the fact that you had two choices for dining. We loved, loved our bar staff and enjoyed many evenings just sitting and chatting with them. We found everyone on the Ingvi Viking staff to be warm and welcoming and we really appreciated the fact that the crew did not try to call everyone by name. Instead, they chatted and bantered with the guests, answered questions, pointed out sights and just acted more like friends. In fact, the entire atmosphere of the ship was one of relaxed friendship. You could tell that from the Captain on down, everyone looked out for each other and, if someone needed help, another crew member was right there. I have never been on a cruise, river or sea, where there was such an obvious feeling of camaraderie. If I could cruise again with the same ship, the same crew, the same itinerary and the same weather, I'd be standing on the dock, suitcase in hand right now. As it is, I now count Viking as one of my favorite, if not my favorite, cruise lines. (Of course, I've decided that I love river cruising!!) Read Less

The included excursions in each port were well organized, utilized comfortable modern coaches, were great overviews of the port city and were conducted by knowledgeable and friendly local guides. It would have been nice to know ahead of time that the Cologne beer tour would require skipping the farewell dinner on board, which was a rather special one. The cruise directory was friendly, informative, attentive and a good public speaker. The cabin and wait staff were friendly, attentive and did their jobs with excellence. The ship was modern, clean and well appointed. The food was very good as were the wines. Foods local to the region being travelled were offered. The desserts/pastries were especially good. The coffee machines were a great extra. As minor criticisms, there could have been more variety in the off the menu breakfast options and some of the beef selections had rather tough cuts of beef. Also, the Wellington had a small portion of puff pastry on top instead of being encased in puff pastry. Lobster would be a nice addition, though at variance with being a local cuisine. The on ship entertainment could have had more variety...perhaps a small ensemble group instead of a lone pianist, perhaps a comedy night or some variety act on some nights. There was trivia one day...that was enjoyable..perhaps a few more game-like activities that involve a subset of interested passengers would do well. There was an utter lack of exercise equipment... if there could be just one room set aside with some treadmills or other such equipment, that would be appreciated. Read Less

The dining room wait staff, chef and sous chefs were exceptional. All staff were efficient, friendly and more than willing to provide excellent service. Our concierge offered to, and did, pick up a special Vienna made gift for me. I had neglected to schedule enough time to get it myself. This was our second cruise with Viking; and, like the first (Prague to Paris 5 months earlier), the experience was wonderful. We appreciated and Viking's focus on the cultural and historical aspects of the places we visited, in both their shore excursions and their on-board programs. (Thank goodness no Vegas-like shows.) On this trip, we were able to really get to know the history of the area and understand what gave rise to the term "Balkanization". The in-home cooking lesson in Bulgaria and afternoon tea in Croatia gave us a chance to really connect with local folks. And our program director's slide show about growing up in Slovakia combined with other cruise presentations led us to a realization that, behind the "Iron Curtain", the quality of one's life varied with the "benevolence" of one's own local dictator - Romania pretty bad, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia pretty good. The food and the ship were both top-notch. But Viking's true strength is in the people it hires. On both our cruises, we had great cruise directors. But more than that, the entire on-board staffs were truly (not just overtly) friendly and helpful, almost to a fault. This is what leads us to recommend Viking without hesitation. And we've just booked our third cruise. Read Less

The cruise staff were professional, fantastic and friendly. The food was fantastic and the choice of food was amazing. Very well done! The cabin was superb and always clean. We went in to the departure city two days early and stayed at the last city another two days. Viking took care of everything even though we were not boarding the ship for 2 days and didn't leave for an additional 2 days. They helped us arrange tours and excursions from the hotel we were staying in. The embarkation and disembarkation was so smooth and Viking really made us feel taken care of. The shore excursions were excellent, especially from local people who really knew the area and the history, well done! The staff were always available to guide and direct with no hiccups at all. The staffs ability to adapt to changes out of their control was amazing. The evening debriefs and entertainment was very good. We would do it again in a minute. Read Less

I've always wanted to see Eastern Europe. I love the size of the ship and the crew were all so nice!! Treated us like friends and went out of their way to make everything extra special. The food was excellent. I loved the choices but we did enough walking that I only gained 3 pounds. The excursions into town were everything I hoped they would be. The local guides were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their town or area. I love that Viking has everything so well planned and thought out and takes care of everything so that all I had to do was enjoy it. I tried to do almost everything that was offered. Nice that things are informal so you don't have to bring a lot of clothes. Though all the women joke about doing laundry in the tiny sink. I had a wonderful time and I would go again. So much easier that staying in hotels and having to more everyday. Read Less

This was an over-the-top trip. Every need was taken care of. Everyday was organized. Every staff member was friendly. Actually missed the staff when we left. Details for embarkation and disembarkation were completely taken care of. The ship was the Ingvi. Stayed in the lower level which still met our needs. We used the room for sleeping only. There are many others places on board to relax and enjoy. Dining was fabulous. We actually enjoyed the Aquavit Terrace. The shore excursions were a true immersion in history and culture. Always felt safe. Every local guide were excellent. Loved the "quiet boxes". Favorite places were Budapest, Nuremberg, Vienna, Cologne. We have already recommended Viking Cruises to friends. Many are interested in our experiences and one couple has already booked a cruise. Two more couples may book soon. Would definitely go on another river cruise and would only use VIKING RIVER CRUISES. This was our third river cruise with additional city stays. We always sign up for thr air package as well. The last was the Grand European from Amsterdam to Budapest with stays in Prague and Amsterdam. Everything was great even the unfortunate need to change ships due to low river levels. Viking made this as painless as possible by placing all baggage back in the same room on a new ship. They even bussed us back to the port we missed so we saw the same places. The extra excursions and on board activities were very entertaining and relaxing. This cruise was less educational than Waterways of the Tzars or Imperial Jewels of China. We had a great time with the crew and cruise director whose trivia games and musical presentations passed the evening hours after dinner. The food is always ample and delicious. We also enjoy the silver spirits package so that we can sample wines and liquor varieties that we have never tried before. We travel as a couple and are both seniors. The dining arrangements allow you to mix with other couples and develop cruise friendships and dining companions. The on shore activities are interesting, cultural and diverse. They even include many shopping opportunities. The walking tours are generally paced to accommodate those with mobility challenges. We thoroughly enjoyed the pre and post cruise visits to Amsterdam and Prague. The hotel in Amsterdam was fantastic with a sensational room view of the Harbour. After brief overview tours you are left on your own to tour and travel by public transportation. Read Less

The entire trip was just excellent. The cabins were nice, they were small, but that's to be expected on a boat. Everyone treated you as if you were royalty. The food was great. The tours were outstanding. I had a minor issue with the PA not working in my room which caused me to miss one excursion, but I got past that okay. My laundry was done fast and very professionally presented to me. The crew and the waiters were very nice. The waiters were fun, always joking, yet very professional. We had an issue where the river water was too low due to a summer drought. We had to pack up, and were bused 3 hours to an identical boat. Same cabin, same good service, same everything. We were friendly with the crew of the Engvi and were unsure of what might await us. I can't remember the name of the second boat, but the whole thing was done almost seamlessly. The boat's entertainment officer [Barry] was very talented, and always had everyone laughing. I told him I wanted to visit Scotland, and since he is Scottish, I thought he would be a good guy to talk to. He spent quite a while telling me what to see and where to go. He is one great guy. I would highly recommend Viking to anyone. Thank you for making my vacation memorable. Read Less

I would rate Viking as a tip top cruise line. We enjoyed every aspect of the boat. Comfortable accommodations, wonderful service and really great food. Everything was well provided for, including organizing tours. Exploring the old windmills was interesting. We also took an optional trip into the Slovakian countryside and visited a young farming family, who invited us into their home, and also showed us their vineyards and winemaking business. It was a great experience. Tour director Barry, kept things lighthearted and fun. I do wish we would have had a full day in the Netherlands. For the most part, the tours were good...several not so great tour guides and a few too many churches to walk through, but overall, an experience I would happily repeat. We met many nice folks on the boat and have kept in touch with some. It was great to visit with people at mealtime and not have assigned seats. Read Less

This was a wonderful introduction cruise to so much of Europe. The guides were excellent and very informed of the area in which they guided. The food was outstanding every day! Cabins were perfect, clean and very well taken care of by the staff. An exercise room/area would have been welcomed. Though there is walking on the tours, it is not the same as a good workout. There were plenty of activities to select from or take some days off for down time, which we did or experience the towns on our own. So glad Viking was able to deal with the low water situation, thank you! Our embarkation was a little mixed up - Viking personnel did not show up at the airport pickup point - but our Cruise Director immediately responded and took care of our getting to the ship on time from the airport at no cost to us. All in all this was fabulous and we so enjoyed our trip and all that we experienced and the new friends we now have because of this cruise. Read Less
