My husband and I were celebrating our 70 birthdays. It was our first cruise, and it couldn't have been better. Everything went smoothly, flights, travel to and boarding the ship, coordinating our shore excursions, etc. Our cabin was very nice, with a balcony, plenty of storage for clothes and luggage, and even a heated bathroom floor. We had all our meals on board the ship, and loved every single one. The food was amazing, and the service impeccable. We took only the shore excursions that came with the cruise, and they were wonderful. They are wonderfully organized and most all of the tour guides were pleasant and knowledgable. We were going to add one, but we waited until we were onboard, and found it was already booked. It's important to research the add ons early before your cruise, and book them ahead of time. The entertainment aboard ship was really nice, from jazz guitarist, to classical violinists, to name that tune competition. All were very worth going to. We also loved that they featured regional food items from the areas that we were touring. We loved every minute of our cruise with Viking, and are really hoping to schedule another next year. Having already done the Danube and Rhone, decided to do the Rhein and maybe more later. We had previously visited Koeln, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Rudesheim, and Amsterdam on land visits, so not having to pack and unpack at each visit was an advantage. We traveled with sister and brother-in-law, so being able to share this visit with them was great. We also met really nice folks on board. Fellow Hawaiians, and Brits and other Americans. I still keep in touch with our new friends from Sheffield. Dining was excellent. Almost bottomless wine glasses was a plus. Service for meals was superb, wonderful and friendly staff. Being able to chat with them was enjoyable and u=interesting to note their various background. German oompah entertainment was really fun, as ist brought back memories of past visits. I especially enjoyed Strasbourg and Koeln, history, architecture, and the sun. the tour guides at each port of call were excellent, with good knowledge of each place we visited, also excellent English. Our cabin was a bit smallish but comfortable. The layout of the ship proved comfortable, with the bar and dining areas close-by. Use of wheel chair provided by the Ingvi for my sister enable her to see things instead of staying onboard. Read Less

Everything was excellent--food, excursions, hospitality, fellow cruisers, and most of all our cruise director Emilee. This was our first trip to Europe and the Viking cruise was an excellent way to experience the history and the people of central Europe...a great learning and enjoyable vacation. Two great experiences--the ringing of the cathedral bells in Strasbourg on Easter morning and the tour of the battlefields at Colmar where Audie Murphy won his Medal of Honor. The weather at this time of the year started off cold and rainy, but the guides on the excursions made up for it. It cleared up and the last five days were beautiful with warm and sunny days. The entertainment in the evenings ranged from very good local musicians to fun filled activities led by Emilee. Did I mention she was a hoot! One thing we really liked was the ability to sit with many different travelers at mealtimes aboard the ship. We got to know them and even found we had some mutual friends. All in all, this was more than what we thought or imagined this trip was going to be. Read Less

It's impossible to describe the many excellent things on this cruise, the cabin, the crew, the entertainment each night was very good, the food was too good, and the tours were unbelievable too. We opted for the pre-cruise extra days in Budapest. Our hotel was marvelous and right in the middle of everything we wanted to see. All were a short walk away. The restaurants in the hotel and in the vicinity were all excellent too. Food on board was always well prepared and served by the staff in a very efficient manner. The choices were always great and I can't say enough about the choice of beverages at every meal. Entertainment was good too. Each evening program was well thought out and pertinent to our voyage on the river. Very entertaining at each stop. Our first cruise on a Viking river boat will not be our last one. We have already signed up for another cruise in fall 2018 and optional post cruise visit to a nearby city. Read Less

Previously sailed the Grand European River Cruise with Viking but the Danube Waltz Cruise was combined with land tour to Munich and Salzburg and a few different stops and tours made this seem quite fresh. The River portion was so relaxing and comfortable with excellent accommodations and service by the crew. We feel like we really got to see and experience the sites and culture of the areas we visited. The tour guides were exceptional and gave excellent advice when we went off on our own.especilly enjoyed Vienna and Bratislava and our extension in Budapest. Because the weather was nice, we were able to walk back to the ship from the Monastery at Melk and shop in the town. The crew were so friendly and accommodating and got to know us individually. The food was well prepared, fresh, healthy and tasted good, even if the menu was not particularly exciting, there was always something we enjoyed eating. The food, especially the steaks were high quality. We enjoyed our meals and fellow travelers. We felt pampered and appreciated. Read Less

I understand that river cruises have smaller ships and therefore smaller cabins. This was my first river cruise and I can only compare it to Regent Seven Seas, Paul Gauguin, and Carnival. This is not an inexpensive trip and the price per day excluding airfare costs more than RSS and PG but not Carnival. Viking does not come close to RSS in terms of food quality and the quality of the included free excursions. Most free excursions are at most a short bus ride around town and a walking tour. Some were just a tour guide who met you at the dock. Well prepared food but not gourmet quality. Very friendly staff who went the extra mile. Cruise director seemed very friendly and knowledgeable. Unlike ocean cruises one afternoon/evening was spent traveling with a docking in Budapest at 10PM. Seemed like a wasted day to me. I would more than likely not return to Viking. Viking ocean cruises is the top rated line? Must offer a completely different experience. Read Less

We were impressed by the care that the cruise staff showed us in making sure that we were comfortable and our needs satisfied. We visited many places we had wanted to see for a long time and felt that our tours of Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest were the highlights of our trip. The excursions were informative and enjoyable. We loved touring the cities, meeting the locals, and learning about their culture and history especially their beautiful abbeys, cathedrals, and castles. We would recommend travelers to Budapest stay an extra day or two to take in all of the sights that city offers. Don't miss the excursion to the horse farm where you will see the Csikos, Hungarian cowboys/girls, in action. Our cabin was clean, the service was outstanding, and the food was delicious and varied. I wanted to see a snapshot of Europe in order to pick a country to go back to and spend more time. This cruise covered so many places that gave me an over view of Europe that it more than fulfilled my needs. The cabin was perfect with the slider so I could view the life on the river - water fowl, homes and towns. The dining was certainly adequate and knowing that the most gourmet foods are not always possible on a boat. The crew were very personable and remembered me during the trip which was so kind! The towns where the cruise stopped exceeded my expectations of European towns and the tours in the towns covered many aspects - culture, history, etc., which pleased me. It was a joy to have laundry service on the trip. I think Viking does an excellent job on their cruises and I hope to take another one soon. Read Less

Cruising the Danube River was something on my wife's bucket list. What an incredible journey it turned out to be. Starting in Budapest, we explored the city on our own before setting sail as well as taking the cruise provided tour. The included tours were very good and provided many highlights of all the ports we docked in. We took advantage of all that were offered and added several on our own. The highlight was a bike tour through the Wachau Valley wine country. Spectacular views at a leisurely pace. There were about 180 passenger aboard with a crew of 49 to attend to our needs. Very good service all around. Bartender was very knowledgeable. Food was very good. They offered local fair from all the ports we passed through which added to the romance of the cruise. Nightly entertainment was provided by locals which added flavor to the journey. We met some very nice people on board. Service was wonderful. After our final stop in Passau, we spent an additional 3 days in Prague. Great city. I'd recommend this cruise as a way to get a taste of Europe along one of her famous rivers. Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise through Central Europe , and Viking has a great reputation. Though the embarkation was not easy - we arrived in Budapest two days early on our own - we walked to the assigned dock not knowing our ship had been relocated for the World Cup FICA competition being held there starting that week. The ship is beautiful. It is comfortable, well appointed, easy to get around, and our cabin was very well designed and surprisingly spacious. The food is very good, though not of the same variety as an ocean cruise. The included excursions were all top notch; the guides, transport, itineraries, and durations were all great. Entertainment, while limited, was very good, and always engaging with the guests. The land portion of our cruise, to Salzburg and Munich, was very well organized and as enjoyable as the rest of the cruise, with 5-star hotels in both cities. We were given plenty of time to ourselves to see the sights outside of organized tours, as well. We hope to join Viking again in the future! Read Less

We had never been on a river cruise before, and we had never been to Germany, Austria, or the Czech Republic. This cruise was the answer! All the Viking shore excursions were excellent, but the most important thing became the 6 friends we came to know on the cruise. They made every meal a delight and every tour so much more fun. Our greatest disappointment was that we only had one day in Vienna. One needs at least two days in such an amazing European capital. Viking should work on this and make sure to include at least two full days in Vienna - perhaps, three! The funniest entertainer was one of the ship’s employees. He was German and he was a great comedian. I know - it sounds like a contradiction in terms. The “singer” was so-so, but the pianist was outstanding. The after dinner entertainment could have been improved a bit, but, honestly, we were so tired, bed sounded good! Read Less

Word of mouth says Viking are by far the best. After one week covering 5 countries in seven days without unpacking and repacking I can highly recommend this cruise. Service exceptional and quality food, stateroom classy and kept exceptionally clean. Tours broad and varied and comprehensive. Management friendly and super organised. Sail was smooth and on time perfectly. Dining experience from a comprehensive breakfast buffet with optional waiter service, a two venue choice for lunch, and immaculately presented and tasty dinner dining experience, every request and allergy catered for, nothing was too much trouble for Cruz the maitre D and his unified and positively cheery crew. All tours had local guides with an immense knowledge of the Cities, customs, history and colourful stories that made every destination enchanting. The housekeeping crew on board are exceptional, every detail in our stateroom was attended to, and the speed and efficiency that these crew work at is an immense achievement all co ordinated by the super competent Marina. I get a email once a week on cruises from Vacations To Go and found this cruise which included 2 cities on my bucket list Budapest and Prague. We did the pre in Budapest and the post in Prague. I can't say enough about the entire experience. The hotels the service was great, the Viking staff at each hotel very attentive to our every need or request. The Ingvi was fantastic. Clean, organized & well run. our cabin was just enough room for two people and the food was excellent and plentiful. The entertainment was always very good, but one evening was extra special when our cruise director David was the entertainment. What a marvelous surprise, he had a superb voice and a great sense of humor. The activities on ship were nice. The service and attention to detail went beyond my expectations. The excursions were again above expectations both from the ship and the hotels. Getting to see things we otherwise would not have on our own. We arrived in Budapest 2 days early. Fanni and Andrea were wonderful. Great concierge service. Gave us great ideas and directions. Agnes took us on the Taste of Budapest tour. She was a wonderful guide. Carmen in Melk was also a terrific guide, wonderful sense of humor. On our post extension tour to Salzburg and Munich, Fred was so knowledgeable and was an outstanding guide. It was also interesting to take a brief bus tour of Marcos' home town (Oberammergau). Friends ask us what was our favorite part of the cruise. Difficult to say...too many choices. All shore excursions were very organized. Cabins are a little small. Next time we would upgrade to a suite with veranda and French balcony. Wonderful service. Dining room staff were top notch. We celebrated our 50th anniversary on the cruise in Vienna. The Dining room staff made it memorable. The pre-cruise hotel (the Corinthia in Budapest) was an elegant hotel. The post-cruise hotel (Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg) was wonderfully refurbished with huge rooms. The Munich hotel (Hilton Munich Park) was a typical business man's hotel, but walking distance to a bier garden, and restaurants. We would definitely take another river cruise. Read Less

First time with Viking and will not be the last, we are booked for the Holy Land in 2018! If that tells no one how we see Viking let me explain. The trip on the Ingvi was a great experience. The crew seamed to be able to read minds anticipating our request before the were asked. They were not overbearing but always available for any needed help with anything truly superior service. The Dining choices were great with local fare and old staples served in a very pleasant unhurried atmosphere. I for one have not been catered to any finer anywhere I have ever traveled. The excursions were as explained in the literature with no surprises. We could have spent more time in some places but we would not have been able to see all the places we saw if we had. I was very interested in the European history and the areas that this cruise was covering. I do have one suggestion to add and that is not to have so much leisure time when visiting a site. For Czechi Kremlov, we had about 2 hours for lunch and leisure time. Whereas that could have been shortened by an hour to give us time to visit inside the castle. This tour was around the castles and not being able to visit inside the castle was disappointing. I think a better planning on the time would be much better received by your customers. We really enjoyed the intimate setting and staff's attention to all details. Our tour coordinators were great and we can not say enough for their dedication and knowledge to serving your guests. Also, food was really good. Enjoyed the lavish breakfast buffet every morning. We would definitely be taking more Viking River cruises in the future. Read Less

We had heard that Viking was the best and they proved it. The itinerary had places that we had never been yet also allowed us to revisit some of our past favorites. The size of the ship allowed us to get to know many of our shipmates and gain lasting friendships. There were many local specialties as well as other international fares available. The waiters always had very solid recommendations. The excursions were excellent. We were very impressed with the former Eastern cities like Budapest, Bratislava, and Cesky Krumlov. Our favorite days were in Cesky Krumlov and Salzburg. Our coach tour before the cruise included Neuschwanstein Castle, a must-see site. We enjoyed seeing sights along the "Sound of Music" tour out of Salzburg also. Cruising with shore excursions allowed us to view many historical sites with the comfort of "going home" to our cabin each night. The cruising itself was as smooth as silk, with the only rocking sensation we experienced that of the ship turning around to dock in Budapest early on our first day there. Our walking group was assigned by virtue of my husband's slower speed, and it made the excursions very comfortable for him. The day trip to Cesky Krumlov was well worth the bus ride, and our "leisure group" guide, Oli, made sure we could all keep up with the walk. We enjoyed the dining room staff members who unfailingly performed their duties with good humor and accuracy. The entrees each evening provided a wide variety of options while allowing for the "meat and potatoes" preferences of some. Our Program Director was so personable that we felt we had gained another son by the end of the trip. Our Maitre 'D was also a highlight, engaging us and our table mates in conversations and with great humor. Portion sizes in the dining room were exactly right, especially when we were enjoying three meals a day. Our tour of the galley left us appreciating even more how wonderful the food was, considering its compact space. The housekeeping staff and director were very attentive and made certain that we had everything we needed. They even dealt with my husband returning some items to the gift shop after he determined we could use our shipboard credit another way. Our home visit on the outskirts of Bratislava was a wonderful diversion from all of the historical sites. We think our cruisemates missed a great opportunity, since only 5 were along on that side trip, besides our driver and interpreter. Upon returning home and regaling a friend about some new insights we gained, she remarked that, "That is something you wouldn't know if you traveled on your own." Precisely! Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise as our first real vacation in about 10 years. Needless to say, after completing 2 graduate degrees and completely rebuilding our business in a new location, we were greatly in need of rest and relaxation. Viking and the crew gave us just what we needed and much more! The staff was amazing! They were all so pleasant even when we were so tired we could hardly smile (just the first day because it was a long flight with 2 connections and we missed the second connection because of mechanical problems with the plane, making our journey to the cruise over 36 hours without sleep. Next time we will upgrade our flight arrangements and leave more than 2 hours to catch an international connection.) We were running so late that there was not much time to explore our departure city and all we really wanted to do was sleep, but by the second day, we couldn't help smiling as our local guides were all so positive and passionate about sharing their home with us. We were so grateful that Viking included excursions at every port, allowing us to get to know the territory and the history without us having to do a whole lot of planning. It was all very educational, but in a relaxed manner. It was also nice to know we would be back on board this gorgeous boat for all our meals. The river view is so calming and the food is excellent. It's also nice not to worry about tipping and everything else that goes with eating out. The boat really felt like our home away from home, but kind of like a royal home with amazing service! I loved that cookies and tea were always available when I needed a pick-me-up! I feel terrible that I can't remember the name of our cruise coordinator, but he was amazing when my husband accidently left his cell phone in a bathroom in one of the castles we had just left. He knew just who to call and stayed incredibly calm and we had the phone back before we left port. I simply cannot speak highly enough of this incredible team! Thank you for an amazing vacation! Our past experience with Viking was excellent. The price was comparable to other lines. We like the Viking takes care of us in every aspect from the time we step off the plan to the boarding to return home. The itinerary was well planned giving us enough time to enjoy the ship and the stops and yet not boring. The commentary while traveling through the countryside was very helpful and interesting with history and folklore mixed in. The timing of our entry into Budapest was spectacular. It was such a wonderful surprise. Our cabin was small but adequate. The balcony type window made it possible to get fresh air and see the passing scenery while lying in bed. There was sufficient variety in the menu with a combination of buffet and service. The variety of items was quality rather than quantity. We preferred that. The dinner service was excellent. One evening we returned late to the ship because we had been visiting relatives. When the kitchen staff learned we had not eaten past the dinner hour, they provided a meal for us. The evening entertainment was modest but enjoyable. We are not "night people" so this was fine. The included shore excursions were good and well planned. The local guides and tours contracted were informative, and experienced in pacing the tours. The bus drivers were fabulous in their skill. We had no complaints about any of the arrangements Viking made. We did both the pre cruise and post cruise packages. Both were well worth the time and expense. We were introduced to things we didn't know existed! We love history and art, culture and food. This filled the bill. Read Less

I chose this cruise (the only cruise that I had been on) because I wanted to visit with a cousin in Amsterdam before embarking on my trip. The countries that were highlighted were ones that I had wanted to visit. And, a river cruise seemed much more manageable to me....I traveled alone. There wasn't anything that I would have changed about the cruise. It was all that I had hoped it would be. Mother Nature caused the only things that I would change. It turned cold and rainy the second week, which made for some cold and wet tours. However, the area in which we traveled needed rain badly and the captain had to get creative at the locks and some docking locations. The food choices were excellent and the food itself was always sooooo good. My only problem was my own will power. As it was, I returned home 10 pounds heavier than when I left. I enjoyed every bite and didn't regret the weight gain. It was a wonderful experience for me. Read Less
