We had not been back to Europe in 40 years, and we had never done a cruise of any kind. The Viking cruise on the Viking Hlin far surpassed any expectations we could have. It was literally the best vacation we have had. The ship was fantastic. The cabins were roomy enough for two to move around in easily; the furnishings were very nice and the veranda was much appreciated and much used. The staff were great, with special mention to our cabin steward, the captain and the maitre'd, not to take anything away from anyone else. Everyone bent over backwards to please and succeeded. The food was excellent. The wait staff was excellent. The tours were well planned and informative, and the four tour buses that followed the route of the ship and drove the tour groups was at once unexpected and appreciated. There are no negatives of any kind that I can apply to our cruise. We will definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

This was our first trip to Europe so we decided to try a river cruise. The PBS advertisements were so enticing for Viking we contacted them. We also contacted other river cruise lines and compared. Viking had everything we wanted and more. The room we chose had a balcony and every available space was used so efficiently. We loved the heated floor in the bathroom and the shower. After going on a large ship cruise this was a welcome feature! The public spaces were spacious, well designed and comfortable. The staff was there to help us with our every need. After a long day of sightseeing and walking they met us with warm, damp rolled up white towels to wipe our face and necks, a lovely touch! The food was excellent with wonderful choices. Its amazing all they can do with the size of the kitchen. So efficient and immaculate. The excursions were everything we hoped for. We learned so much from their guides. We took the pre-extension in Lucerne. The hotel was very nice and located near old town and excellent restaurants. Loved the Black Forest and the cuckoo clock demonstration - came home with two! We have already booked a cruise with Viking for 2017. That should more than show how we enjoyed our cruise! Read Less

My wife and I cruised with Viking for the second time. This time we were on Viking Hlin. The entire staff were truly fantastic - from the Captain, Hotel Manager and the rest of the crew. They were a really happy crew and that was reflected in their work and service to their guests. The food was, as usual, magnificent and we met some lovely people along the way. Viking make sure there are alternative trips for all levels of fitness and ensured that no-one missed out. If you felt you didn't enjoy this cruise, then it would have been your own fault! Read Less

I have always resisted the idea of a cruise with 5000+ strangers, but the river cruises did attract my interest. The Viking Rhine River cruise was wonderful! Every aspect ... the staff, the guests (fewer than 200), the food, and the shore excursions ... were outstanding in every regard. The ship, the Viking Hlin, was quiet with no sounds of the engine thrumming; the staterooms were very comfortable and efficient in use of space and never felt crowded. But, the best parts were certainly the people: the staff just could not have been more helpful and professional, and they were genuine in their attention to each guest. A wonderful trip! Read Less

A Rhine River cruise had been on my bucket list for years so I had high expectations for this trip. Viking totally surpassed all of my expectations. I loved it so much I hated to get off the ship. I wanted to go for another 7 days. Of all the great things about the trip, I thing the very best was the customer service that we received through the entire trip. Having a small crew and less than 200 passengers gave us a cozy atmosphere with a crew that took great care of all of our needs. When we reached the city of Koblenz, I wanted to rent a car so that I could visit some of my ancestral home towns that were a half hour away. Well, the rental car agency closed early that day and we weren't docking until after noon time. The concierge got us a taxi that was waiting for us at the dock and they let us off as the 1st two passengers so that we could get to the taxi and the rental car agency. Through their efforts, I got the joy of visiting the tiny towns that my 2nd to 7th great grandparents were born and died in. We also loved the food and the tours (we took most of the optional tours too). I would highly recommend this cruise and can't wait to take another Viking cruise. Now I just have to decide which place to visit next! Read Less

Our needs were well attended to and the meals were lavish! The views from the ship were spectacular!!! The shore excursions were superb--especially enjoyed the small towns and Black Forest. The Mercedes Benz tour was incredible with all the robotics. Our crew was most pleasant. We enjoyed our visit to see the ship's operation and were delighted to see the Caterpillar engines since Cat headquarters are close to where we live. Would highly recommended this tour down the Rhine. The Hlin was practically brand new with all the latest gadgets and electronics. The computer area let us keep up with news back home. We sprung for the veranda but since there is so much room on the ship it really isn't needed although we enjoyed sitting outside each day. Read Less

We joined the cruise in Basel for a weeks cruise. The whole experience was far in excess of our expectations and definitely of high standards. The ships are well appointed, the cleaning staff are very pleasant, hard working and a delight to deal with. The barmen were attentive, with great sense of humours and their memories to our favourite drinks was impressive. I did find the main female bar member only favoured serving men so we found we had to wait a while sometimes. A bit annoying. The rooms are well set out - I do suggest you upgrade to having a separate lounge. We were traveling as 2 friends and had a twin bedroom so it was nice to have the extra room so we weren't tripping over each other. The single beds are very narrow, I nearly fell out each night but it would have been difficult to have any wider in the room. The bathrooms are super clean, the shower has great pressure and overall nicely designed. The amenities - soaps, shampoos etc are top quality and replaced each day if required. The only niggle was as the sun deck was directly above us we were woken by someone with thunder hooves doing their morning brisk, thumping power walk about 7.15am. Now that may not be early for some but hey we were on holiday and I didn't have to get up at my normal 6am start. The cruise mainly consists of people over 65-70. We are only in our late 40s but didn't find it a problem and most were a delight. The food was incredible, good menus, well presented and I loved the Villeroy and Boch cutlery and dinnerware, very tasteful. One day I overheard a women complaining there was just too much food .......... hello you don't have to eat or order everything! We gave up breakfast by the 2nd day, just didn't need it. Plus even if the desserts do look good - do you really really need it! The only time I faulted was the Banana ice cream and it was fabulous. If we were there for lunch we just had the casual lunch not the full blown a la carte menus. We would either take an excursion or go into a town where we were stopped for the day and have some local food rather than rushing back to the ship for the "free/included" lunch. We were concerned there is no kettle in the rooms for tea or coffee but there are coffee and tea stations just at the end of the corridor from the rooms and the coffee is good. We picked a couple of the excursions but used them mostly as a form of transport and did our own thing. We were "over" the castle/church trips having done that before. The 2 tours we enjoyed were the cheese factory tour (even though I've done ones before at home) and the Lindt Museum tour which we did on our own but I am a huge chocolate fan. The walking tour of Basel before we left the 1st port was very informative and we had a lovely guide. I found the internet connection was better in the rooms or below deck than up on the sun deck but overall better than I expected. The ships are very smooth, no engine noise at night and it was fasinating going through all the locks. It was a busy river with all the traffic and interesting watching all the different cargo boats. All in all I would highly recommend Viking after all they have won awards for service etc for 3 years running and I feel the awards are justly deserved. Read Less

This was by far the highlight of our month in Europe. We have never done a river cruise before, but we will certainly be traveling with Viking again! From the moment we stepped on board to the time we left the cruise in Basel, we were treated with respect, courtesy and friendly crew. Everyone was amazing and went out of their way to ensure all guests had a fabulous time. The shore tours were very well organized and executed. The guides were local to the area and passionate about their cities. We travelled in the midst of the heatwave and our comfort was taken into account every step of the way. We were in the 'cheap seats' as far as our accommodation was concerned, but we had no issues with engine noise or feeling cramped. The rooms were lovely and our steward was amazing! We ate in the restaurant most nights and became very friendly with a lovely couple from Mobile, Alabama. In fact, we still email each other weekly. The food was second to none, thanks to the amazing culinary skills of Mark Anthony. Our waiters, in particular Kyle, Branislav and Jerome were very attentive and super friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. If they could possibly cater to your requests, they would do so in a heartbeat. The entire trip was so well organized and the crew were incredible. I highly recommend the Viking Hlin to everyone!! Read Less

Our most recent river cruise, 1st on the Yangtze, 2nd, the Baltic-Volga Waterway, found us on the Rhine Getaway aboard the Hiln. The scenery was amazing! As with our previous cruises we found the stateroom to be small but adequately appointed, the ship to be immaculately clean and comfortable, the crew, attentive and knowledgeable, food & wine delicious and plentiful, tours incomparable! In each port our tours were conducted by local guides who speak excellent English and shared their love and knowledge of the areas we were visiting. The coaches are all comfortable, immaculate and the drivers took great care of their passengers. On-board activities are always interesting and well presented. We have learned so much about each of the areas we've toured and actually felt the history brought to life around us. This is what I love most about Viking's Itineraries. Viking also takes great care to assure that you never feel uncertain as to what happens next. From picking you up at the airport to returning you to your place of departure, they handle everything for you. 2016 will find us cruising on The Star, one of Viking's new ocean ships. We will visit Viking Homeland. Can't wait! Read Less

We did the Rhine river cruise, Amsterdam to Basil. We had never been to Europe and had never been on a river cruise, so this was the best of both. The cruise was excellent, everyone very courteous, helpful and professional. The food and service were all amazing. The shows and games lots of fun. The tours each day in luxury buses were very well organized and fun, learned a lot about the culture and history of the countries we visited. All the folks were so nice! The meals were amazing! And many choices, the wine flowed freely, usually from the areas we traveled through. The only complaint we had, was that the ship had changed the location of embarkation and we weren't notified by e-mail until the night before. We had spent an extra day prior, in Amsterdam, and had not gotten the e-mail on our phones. So needless to say our poor cab driver had a difficult time finding the correct location for us to board. And there was a bit of a language barrior. We were't the only ones that day, that had this happen to them, but the ship graciously compensated us. And no harm was done. And we had started out in plenty of time that day to find our boat. So be sure to check your phones and emails to keep abreast of changes. Or have someone one at home do it for you. I and my traveling partner, would indeed do this again, in a heartbeat! Read Less

This was our first time with Viking. One thing that made the trip so enjoyable was that we didn't have to think or worry about getting where we needed to be. We booked air, pre and post stays. Being picked up at the airport made it less stressful, being in a foreign country and not worrying about directions, etc. We spent our pre in Lucerne, beautiful!! This also included a walking tour of the city. When we arrived in Basel there was also a walking tour. The cruise was so relaxing. Having a planned excursion in each stop allowed us to really see the cities we were in. One minor complaint would be the amount of time spent on a bus to get to some of the sights. To have some time to explore on our own in each city was also wonderful. The cabin was the perfect size for the two of us. I can honestly say we did not have a single meal that was not delicious. The only complaint would be some items were too salty, there were other travelers who said the same. We befriended some fellow travelers, England, Australia and fellow Americans, and had dinner together each night. The post was spent in Amsterdam, which included a walking tour. Just beware of the bicycle riders!! There were even Viking reps in the hotels to help navigate Lucerne and Amsterdam, with restaurant suggestions, places to see. We appreciated the way Viking arranged all aspects of our trip, from airport transfers, hotels, excursions. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we are booked for a Danube cruise next year. Read Less

This was a bucket-list cruise for me and I was not disappointed. We left for Amsterdam early and had two full days to spend there. We were amazed at the number of bicycles there (600,000) which made walking an adventure. We then boarded our ship, the Viking Hlin, and were personally escorted to our stateroom, which was very adequate regarding space and appointments. The best part was the spacious shower and bathroom area. The ship itself had a small library and computer area with Wi-Fi. I was born to eat and found the breakfast/lunch buffet to be excellent. The choices were well presented and very tasty. The scrambled eggs were the absolute best I have ever eaten ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. As for dinner, the choices were less than on an ocean cruise, but WAY BETTER. Very gourmet! The best part was there were only 184 passengers, compared to thousands on an ocean cruise. Having fewer guests and no loud music, made for a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. With no huge stage productions, the entertainment was another surprise....consisting of local talent from the various ports. I won't tell you about it, but you will be pleasantly surprised. Very classy! Regarding port and shore excursions, there was a tour of each city visited. Be prepared to walk! I walk with a cane, but found two walking sticks to be my salvation. We were broken into three groups, with the third being the "leisure" group. Some of the tours included a motor coach and one had a taxi. Regarding the crew, we found them to be more than eager to assist and make our time onboard pleasant. I would have to say that my favorite part of the trip was cruising down the middle Rhine and seeing all of the castles. We were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day to view them from the top deck. With all things considered, this (our first River cruise) was our absolute favorite cruise ever out of a total of eighteen. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, but not to worry. We left the ship in Basel and spent an extra two full days in Lucerne. It is a beautiful city, but very expensive. Would I do another Viking River Cruise? In a heartbeat. Well done VIKING! Read Less

Really enjoyed the cruise could not fault anything and thoroughly recommend this holiday to everyone. Especially like the way you can sit wherever you like for dinner thus meeting and mixing with more people. The food was excellent with a great variety of choice. We personally like the more relaxed dining of the buffet lunch on the sun deck and was pleased there was no dress code. The free drinks with meals also worked very well. The itinerary worked very well with just the right amount of time in each location particularly liked the microphone system which made it very easy for everyone to hear the guide and the fact that the groups were altered for each excursion thus helping you to mix with more people. The option of having half the day free in many locations also worked very well especially with bus transport to and from towns every half an hour. Also liked the fact that bottled water supplied as you left the ship and also the fact that hot drinks and biscuits were available at all times. The evening briefings and daily news sheets ensured that you did not miss anything. The staff were all very helpful and friendly, indeed nothing was too much trouble. The evening entertainment was generally quite relaxed and fun and it was nice to have the opportunity to dance. One night of the cruise was a themed evening with food, drinks and entertainment of the Country we were travelling through which gave you the opportunity to sample everything. Read Less

The service was exceptional aboard the Viking Hlin; the accommodations comfortable and thoughtfully appointed, the dining exceptional, the itinerary excellent. The ship was spotlessly clean, and the staff made a point of providing for and even anticipating our needs. The tours included in the itinerary were greatly enhanced by having local tour guides, and the audio system allowed freedom to explore while listening. All of the optional excursions were worth the cost. The itinerary allows a balanced of "programmed" activity and freedom to explore. Sharon, our program director, was visible and helpful, providing an overview of each upcoming day (handily reinforced on a guide left in the room each evening during turn-down, and including museum addresses, hours, pricing, restaurant info--a thorough overview of options in each location). We loved the trip into the Alps to Mount Titlis, the extended time in gorgeous Lucerne, tours of the Black Forest (including a brief hike in the forest, which made all those Grimm stories of children being eaten there seem quite plausible), the beautiful Alsace region (and trip along the wine trail to a family operated winery)--on and on! All of that, and mornings on the Rhine beginning with a lovely breakfast (jams and yogurt made on board), and evenings ending with a sumptuous meal. It was even more than we expected, and we'll use Viking again and again. Read Less

They were professional, helpful, friendly, sincerely looked out for us and connected with us from the moment we came on board. The food was excellent and the Chef from the Philippines prepared us a special meal which was outstanding! One young lady who was our server for breakfast, lunch and dinner, was Cherielyn, she took care of the 8 of us each meal, each day for the whole trip and works in the main dining room and her warmness, personality and professionalism was an added bonus to our having a wonderful trip. The staff and management of the HLIN Boat was so well organized, always ready to help, and always had a sincere smile on their faces. The tours, the boat, the food, the staff, from the Captain to the deck hands were incredible!! The service was excellent as was the food and wine. We couldn't fault other than they need to have some toothpicks which I know is picky!! We were trying to fill out the sheet with comments on how they could improve the cruise and the toothpicks was the only thing we could come up with. The tours were excellent as was the guide. I did do an extra tour to the winery - it was okay but not as good as the included tours we did. This was a special trip for us as we were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and a birthday too. I've wanted to go on a river cruise for a long time. We've never been on a large ocean cruise, as the large size didn't appeal to me. For our anniversary we were considering Italy or Greece but during my research an ad for Viking Cruise popped up the price was fantastic especially the airfare part. Since everything is included we decided to book. The booking process was very easy and the agent was very responsive. Hotel information (if any) - we didn't book any pre or post cruise hotels but heard from others that they really enjoyed the pre cruise trip. Ship information - the ship was nice, small, welcoming. The main lounge area both in and out were set up for socializing and the size of the ship made this very easy. Activities - loved the activities a German cooking class, Past/Present Germany lecture, Info session on the locking system used on rivers, etc. Service - exceptional about sums it up. Port & shore excursions - Local tour guides make it...the details on license plates, renting of small garden plots, etc. plus the history was fantastic. The tours were the right length and gave enough time to explore a little on your own. Travel to embarkation Port - we booked everything through Viking and weren't disappointed - flights, transfers etc. were perfect and pick up and drop off without a hitch. Cabin - and accommodations were clean and well appointed. Amazing how they use the space so well. The shower was very cool. Tip - you can cloud and un-cloud the glass for the shower. Dining - fantastic as a celiac the chef and waiters were super and I was problem free the entire time. Even had gluten-free croissants what a treat. My husband loved the food. Children's clubs - N/A age group was in the late 40's and up. Entertainment - local and on ship talent, 50/60's music night, opera singing, trivia - fun, fun Summary - value for the money, great and relaxing vacation - highly recommend.   Read Less

We just recently returned from our week long Romantic Danube River Cruise. We were a party of four traveling on Viking for the first time. We felt like the crew gave over 100% in making sure all patrons were well taken care of at meals, going and coming from our land excursions and our time on the ship. The pace of the trip was relaxing. In addition to the many excursions planned, the schedule allowed for time to just sit on the desk and enjoy the beautiful countryside. We made lots of new friends from several countries. I would gladly sign up for another Viking River Cruise as I really enjoyed seeing the countries from a more intimate perspective. My husband and I are veteran ocean cruisers ages 52 and 49 and were unsure we would like a river cruise--and now we are absolutely sold on river cruising!! We sailed on the maiden voyage of Viking Hlin July 2nd out of Amsterdam for the Grand European Tour in a aquarium level room 120. We were initially a little nervous due to earlier reported low waters on the Danube--however, by the time we got to the Danube around July 11--there had been enough rain and we had no problems. There were only some minor issues that were out of Viking control that resulted in our cruise being off-track for pulling up at each location-so that we had to be bussed to a few of the excursions (around 1-1.5 hours). I know some of the people complained and were not happy--but I tend to think that I'm on vacation, in a beautiful location and Viking did everything they could to ensure we made every excursion --so why be so upset??? One thing that has really sold us on river cruising is that you almost always have beautiful scenery around you and not just the deep blue sea. It is also very peaceful sailing down the river. We passed through 68 locks and that was so interesting and unusual to us. The staff was amazing! We had Dewi Klop as our program director and Zsolt as our concierge and both were great!! The rest of the staff always had smiles and greetings and were always willing to offer help. We booked room 120 because that and the top suite were all that were left-and I felt that our window room was just fine-we were not in the room much anyways. On ocean cruises we always get a balcony or suite and I was concerned I would miss out-but it turned out fine. The room is small but the amenities were nice and the room nicely appointed. There was enough storage for all of our stuff and the suitcases fit under the bed. I did check out the French balcony room and the room was a little smaller depth wise than ours-good to know for future-probably wouldn't book it. We had friends in a suite and that was nice-but for the price they paid not worth the EXTRA $12,000. Food was good to excellent every day. I'm pretty sure no one went hungry:). Portions were perfect and I did like that we didn't feel stuffed after our meals which is different than the ocean cruises we've been on-keeps the extra pounds off. Not that you can't order more if you were still hungry or really liked something. I do wish that river cruises would have a small gym available and a Jacuzzi or something for the top deck other than shuffle board and mini golf. Excursions were fine-not really our style. They were mainly walking tours so we actually didn't take most of them and did our own thing. In Vienna and Budapest we did Segway tours and they were excellent! In Nuremberg we did do the WWII history tour which was interesting being on Zeppelin field and the Nuremberg trials courtroom-but the hubby felt the museum was something he could see on the history channel. There were no artifacts to see-just hand held listening devices to go with photos. The towns were so quaint and lovely-it was nice walking around and taking in all the beauty. Would we sail a river cruise again? A huge absolutely!! I just need to find the right itinerary!!   Read Less
