This was our first cruise on Viking. Everything was excellent; as good or better than our previous river cruise on another line. The staff, rooms, food, tours, and briefings were tailored to our mature fellow passengers. The embarkation at Amsterdam was one of the few issues that could have been improved. We were advised of three possible docking locations ahead of time, but when we emailed the ship on the sailing day, we were told the Hiln was now at a fourth location, well out of town. We had to take an expensive taxi ride and search for the proper pier. We were also disappointed by the advance booking process. We planned to take another Viking river cruise in 2017 and were interested in Viking's certificate program -- buy one (or more) for $100, worth $200 towards our next cruise. Viking's telephone representatives assured us that we could put a deposit on the 2017 cruise, then buy the certificates on our 2016 cruise. However, once on the ship, the concierge said the certificates could not be applied to an existing reservation. We spent a few delightful days on our own in Amsterdam before the cruise and a few more in Switzerland after the cruise. The seven days on the ship were wonderful, as were the included shore excursions. We enjoyed the food, included wine and beer, and too many desserts! The room was always spotless, the communications were timely, Wi-Fi worked well, and our sailing companions were very interesting. We look forward to our next Viking cruise. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we chose to take a Viking River Cruise down the Rhine River. We chose a pre-cruise extension and made all of the arrangements on our own, spending two nights in Amsterdam before boarding the Viking ship Hlin. Our first impressions with the ship and crew were...Wow!! The ship was amazing and the crew friendly and helpful no matter what we asked or requested. Our stateroom steward made us feel as though we were her only customers! The rest of the staff was just as wonderful and at the welcome dinner we were informed that the water levels were good and we should have no problems with our cruise to Basel. The atmosphere onboard is casual and we saw everything from t-shirts to jacket and ties, and the ages ranged from early/mid 30's to early 80's. We did get rained on during our first two ports (windmills and Koln), but when you take a European cruise in early April, that is to be expected. There is a lot of walking on some of the tours and the guides were wonderful. Trust the ship's classification of tours as strenuous or easy, they are very accurate! I suppose my only complaint would be that a couple of the tours seemed a little rushed and it would have been nice to have a little extra time to spend at some of the locations. The Black Forest tour was one where it would have been nice to have an extra hour. Yes, we would take another cruise with Viking and we are already looking for our next cruise! Read Less

This trip was recommended by friends, actural experience turned out to be excellent and memorable for my wife and I. We are now recommending Viking river curises to our friends for both quality and value for money. We were particularly impressed with the shore excrusion trips. All were well-organized and led by experience and caring guides. Tour buses appears to be dedicated to Viking lines, they were clean; comfortable and with safe drivers. The shore excrusions was a pleansant surprise (and a job well done) on top of the "river crusing" experience. Daily activity sheet and visiting fact sheets were easy to follow and comprehend. On-board dinnings included sufficient culture varieties and themes; all were well prepared and served. Staff were friendly; personable; happy and patient. Some improvement feedbacks: 1. The cabine hallways were bit narrow. 2. The weather - there were some "cold-and-rainy" spring days in early April . . . 3. Embarkation was changed last minutes, an earlier notice would be better. We look forward to our next river cruise with Viking Read Less

This is our third trip on Viking. They have always provided excellent service, interesting activities, and great excursions. The ships are well maintained and only a few years old. The food is always wonderful reflecting the foods of the countries and cultures we are visiting. The service is excellent. The crew is always friendly and welcoming. Being able to go on top on warm sailing days to enjoy the views, the sun, and the relaxation was great. The transfer of luggage to and from the ship is very easy. The entertainment on board reflects the culture and talents of the areas we are visiting. A wide variety of entertainment is offered on various trips. There is also time to get to know the other passengers and to develop friendships. The visits in the homes of the citizens was enlightening. Our guests were very welcoming and shared their homes, their food, and their culture with us. We also got to try our hand at cooking local favorites. The buses used by Viking are comfortable. The guides are excellent and we are able to rate our guides to insure that Viking uses only the best guides. The tours through the towns/cities gives a good overview and then in your spare time you can return to areas of interest. The walking tours are also very interesting and you get an up-close look at places of interest with a knowledgeable individual from that city. The optional tours give you a choice from a range of interests. If you don't wish to do an optional tour then you can spend time visiting places of interest to you. We have chosen to do extra days prior to our scheduled sailing on each of our trips. This has enabled us to enjoy places we wouldn't go otherwise. The Viking agents are always there to welcome you and help you plan your stay. Read Less

The captain even took time to play chess with my 11 year old son, an experience he will never forget! The excursions were well organized. The tour guides were knowledgeable, professional and friendly we learned a lot about the areas we were exploring. The food was amazing! There was a great deal of variety of deliciously prepared gourmet food. The waiter made sure we were all happy with our meals and made sure we enjoyed our experience each evening. We chose this sailing so we could visit Christmas markets. We were not disappointed! Many markets, large and small, throughout the various ports. We were disappointed that we had to be bussed into so many towns however. The ship was clean and fresh. Our stateroom (verandah) was roomier than we had anticipate with plenty of storage/closet space. The food was very good. Entertainment was primarily a piano player. We had a cooking demonstration, a Dutch tea, a young girls’ choir, a water management lecture, etc., on various late afternoons. Great accordion player one night during dinner. We felt no movement at all onboard nor experienced any engine noise. Only when going through the locks, did the ship rock at all. We would have liked more information on the locks and to know when the ship was scheduled to traverse them. The schedule was rather regimented - not relaxing. I hit 10,000+ steps every day. All included tours were in the morning. It would have been gracious to have some optional tours in the morning, so that each day was not predicated by having to get up early to have breakfast to be ready to join an included tour. “Leisure walk” tours were available about day three, also in the mornings. No explanation as to how these would be different than the regular tours, except they might be slower paced. I would have appreciated more information. Viking did provide both water and umbrellas. Viking was no help at all when a passenger inquired about shipping items home, FedEx, etc. Most tour guides were excellent. Gratuities are not included. You are expected not only to tip all shore tour guides and bus drivers, but the cruise director (ours was not overly friendly nor helpful. It felt as if she were simply “checking the boxes” and resented being asked questions) and ship staff. We will look for a truly inclusive cruise next time. The Euro makes purchasing souvenirs super easy. We had no difficulties at any border and needed to carry our passports only into France, as a result of the Paris terrorist attacks the preceeding month. Armed military was in evidence in Brussels airport and Strasbourg. We had pre- and post-cruise tours booked through Viking. Our tour director for the pre-cruise tours was more than outstanding - just super (Nico Favoreel). Our group was reduced to six from 14-16, so the personalized service was exceptional. Our accommodation in Brugge, Dukes’ Palace, was wonderful. Viking met us at the airport and transported us to the hotel and to the various stops throughout the four days before we boarded our ship. Excellent service throughout. Our hotel in Amsterdam was switched to the Okura. A nice hotel, but it could have been anywhere in the world and not centrally located. Our post tour in Lucerne was an afternoon walking tour and we were left to our own devices the next day because not enough people signed up for the full-day excursion we had planned to take. Nonetheless, nice accommodations, though again, the hotel could have been anywhere in the world. We would have preferred hotels with “character.” Hotels in Lucerne and Amsterdam overlooked either a canal or lake. Transfer to Zurich airport, for just the two of us, was via Mercedes with a driver - wow! Having lived in Europe, we anticipated drizzly weather; weather was exceptionally warm - no snow, very little rain. On a couple of occasions, it was obvious that we were being directed to specific gift shops. The Black Forest stop was very touristy. The one evening when at least half the passengers went ashore for dinner, we hoped to have dinner just the two of us, but a waiter required that we move to fill a table with others. Unfortunate. Water was not initially provided with meals and often had to be requested several times. Wine flowed freely. It would have been nifty had staff badges indicated home country as well as a name. Interesting to talk to young people from all over. English was spoken by all - some more fluently than others. Read Less

It has always been my dream to visit Christmas markets in Germany during Advent. I had heard about bus tours but that was not what I wanted to do. Then I heard about River cruises that offered this. It was on my bucket list as of that day. Viking offered the best tour for our requirements. We arrived in Amsterdam 3 days early and explored the city and met up with friends. On sailing day, we arrived at the port in Amsterdam and were met by wonderful Viking staff and our boarding was very swift and effortless. We have done a few Caribbean cruises with Royal Caribbean where it's extremely busy and takes quite a while. The cabin was beautiful, modern and clean. The ship was beautiful and the staff very friendly. Every meal was better than the night before and always a lot of variety. I really enjoyed the girls Choir that was brought on board one evening while we were docked. They sang local and Christmas songs and it was wonderful. Our pianist for the trip (Angel) was outstanding. Every port had something unique to offer. I really liked the headsets where you could listen to the commentary of a LOCAL guide who was always so knowledgeable and proud of their city. Then afterwards we were free to explore the Christmas markets that were in that city. When asked afterwards what was my favourite, I said everything as it was all so amazing. The service of the staff was outstanding. There was a mix up of items purchased at a vendor while on a shore excursion. When I went to the front desk to see if an announcement could be made so that I could exchange my package with the person who received mine, no one came forward at that time. However, after returning home, I received a call from Viking giving me someone's contact information (with their permission) as they were the one who also had the wrong items. We then contacted each other and exchanged our purchases. This is truly going above and beyond regular customer service. The lady who cleaned our cabin was amazing - she did a wonderful job, quick, polite, friendly and was always working and had a smile and hello every time we saw her during the day. My one and only complaint was Viking Air. We purchased and paid for our cruise 10 months before we travelled and yet we couldn't get seat assignments until we checked in for our homeward journey. I was told that this is the class of fare that Viking Air chose to purchase for us but honestly, after having our money for 10 months, surely a class of fare could have been purchased where seat assignment was allowed. As it turned out, we were able to sit together after visiting the consierge desk but it was an unnecessary stress for us. I like the ability to use Viking Air vs booking our own but may not use it again for this reason and I have heard others complain about it also. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we always wanted to go to the Christmas markets in Europe. It was totally worth doing and would consider doing it every year. It gets you in the spirit of Christmas and is so fun to see all the decorations and festivities. The weather is cold, but not unbearable. The food was fabulous and it is well worth upgrading your room to a suite. We wish we could take the staff from this ship on every cruise. They really made the trip so special. The tours each day are a bit early sometimes, but full of facts and information. It is also worth arriving a day or two early in Amsterdam and doing the post trip in Lucerne. Both great cities to walk around in and beautiful. We also did the tour to Mt. Titlus and made cheese and went up the 360 degree gondola. There was also an ice cave and suspension bridge way up on top of the mountain. There was an abundance of delicious food and snacks in your cabin that are replenished daily along with fresh fruit daily. We had a nice double size shower and the floor was heated in the bathroom. While my husband slept later in the morning, I could get up and close the pocket door in the sitting room and watch tv or check emails. Worth the extra money for the extra space. I can't say enough about this cruise. We met some fabulous guests and plan to cruise together in the future. Make this cruise a bucket list must do!! Read Less

This was our first river cruise, but not our last! Everything from the booking to the trip itself was flawless. The Hlin is a new ship with every amenity imiginable for a river boat. I'm not sure my wife and I will ever sail on a large ship again. We sailed from Amsterdam to Basel on a Christmas Market Cruise. We extended our trip in Amsterdam for two days and toured several sights like Anne Franks house. Beautiful town but the weather was rainy until we got on the ship. The only thing I would change would be that sailing from Basil to Amsterdam will stop at slightly better towns and see more castles. Also, maybe sailing downstream would be quieter, but we rarely heard any engine noise in our cabin which was in the middle of the ship. The cabins are efficient in size, but comfortable. The bathrooms have a heated floor, which comes in handy in December. The food was great, lots of choices from breakfast to dinner. The excursions were informative and well paced, and every town had a interesting history. They use local guides who know their towns history well. They don't just recite a canned speech. The employees on board were kind and helpful from the cabin stewards to the wait staff. Boris, the cruise director worked hard to see to our every request. The Christmas time frame is so different since it's not a high tourist time of year. Mostly locals at the markets who are very friendly and often speak english well enough to communicate with. What ever time of year you go, the Rhine cruise on a Viking ship would be a great first river cruise! Read Less

Our cabin suite was a bit pricy and booked at the last minute. However, I was given a discounted rate by my travel agent. I enjoyed everything that we got from Viking, from the moment we stepped in the Hlin Viking Longship. The staff who met us at the airport and the staff on board were very friendly and accommodating. The food was mostly great served by the friendly staff. Our room was always kept fresh and clean. The daily excursion was very informative and well planned. My sister and I signed up for this cruise because of the Christma markets and were lucky enough to book one of the Explorer Suites. The accommodations were outstanding, our cabin steward (Ria) was terrific. The excursions were good, but difficult walking because of the cobblestones at times. The food was good, but I liked the food on our Danube cruise in 2010 better. I would have preferred to eat dinner a bit earlier. The staff went out of their way to make our stay pleasant, we particularly enjoyed our private tour of the wheelhouse and dinner with the Captain. Everyone was wonderful. I was disappointed in Cologne that we couldn't tour the Cathedral in the morning as promised, we had to go back in the afternoon because of the Sunday masses. I did go back in the afternoon and noticed there were guided tours, that would have been much more meaningful than wandering around on my own. Just a suggestion. Travel to embarkation is always tiring, nothing can be done about that, but the flight arrangements were fine. The handling of Disembarkation is amazing, extremely well organized. The Viking reps in Amsterdam were very helpful. We liked the hotel. I recommend Viking to all of my friends because of the ports, tour guides, staff and overall exemplary experience. True value for the money, lots of free publicity from me! Read Less

Our second cruise was the Rhine River Cruise, Christmas Market Cruise (Nov. 2015) Even in winter, the Rhine is interesting and beautiful. The crew, again was lovely, The shore excursions were wonderful, the food was delicious and the kitchen staff very accommodating. We enjoyed our interactions with everyone except for the entertainment/tour coordinator. He was very unorganized and rather brash. His "frenzied" attitude was not professional and he never explained clearly where we should meet after an excursion. The evening entertainment facilitated by him was very unorganized. Also, the hotels were substandard in both Basel and Amsterdam. Tiny rooms. We had to personally upgrade so that we would be comfortable. Check-in and upgrades took half the day. Read Less

Traveled from Basil to Amsterdam, via Rhine. Unfortunately, the river was to shallow to pass and we were moved to another Viking ship on the other side of low section. The transfer was done very efficiently however it did interrupt some of the sightseeing. Accommodations and onboard service and facilities was very good, however the vacuum waste system over our stateroom, aboard ship, was noisy. Our travel director was extremely friendly and helpful, as were the local guides. Regarding ships, we started on the Hlin and were transferred to the Kara. We preferred the Hlin staff over the Kara. Excursions were often slow due to the elderly (we are in our 60's and many could not match pace) so one must be patient and understanding. Love river cruising. Everything was convenient. The service was good and always helpful. We like the small ship and less walking for activities. The scenic views of the landscape were breathtaking. We had a illness while on board and the director helped with finding a emergency room and accompanied the sick passenger to the doctor. We enjoy meeting all the guests and after a few days knowing most of the people we travel with. We will definitely take another river cruise. Our cabin was neat and tidy and we were never rushed out for cleaning. The ship was beautiful and we enjoyed the view from the front with the serving area for food. This was new to us from previous cruises. I thought the food was delicious and never had any thing I didn't like. The entertainment was okay. Sometimes better than other times. However, our director was just delightful. She always brightened up the evening no matter what. Our excursions were perfect with the built in hearing device. I really like that and find it makes our experience more complete. The only complaint I would have is the first day on arrival we walked the city of Basel and it was too taxing. After the long flight I should have rested and then later left ship. When returning our flights were scheduled to Minneapolis and then to Dallas. They timing was too close. We missed the Dallas flight because of customs and security lines were too long. We only had about an hour and 15 minutes to make it. The airport was so big we had to ride to the Dallas connection but missed the flight by about 5 minutes. Had to stay in Minneapolis over night. This was my first Viking cruise. I chose it because of the historical significance of visiting first hand all of the sites along the Rhine river. The ship and accommodations were excellent. More importantly, the information given each evening prior to reaching our next destination was superlative. The staff was first rate and service was superlative. I must give additional credit to the supervisor of the tour guides. Her name is Petra Hall. She was always available and at everyone's disposal. Her tour guides were also superlative. They knew every detail of information at the site we went to. Petra also went on a lot of the tours to make sure that the service was top notch. It is this kind of detail that will bring me back to another Viking cruise. I had two disappointments. The cuisine aboard was just so-so. Breakfast was excellent as one had many choices to choose from. lunch was usually ordinary, nothing special. Dinner was more disappointing. Food was usually overcooked or tasteless. Sauces were nothing special. I skipped dinner twice in the dining room. I hope you can fix this. I am a chef and fussy about food, however, serving food in a large atmosphere can be excellent everyday if food is fresh and sauces are not frozen or packaged. The Radisson Blu hotel at the end of our trip in Amsterdam had its issues too. While the hotel was conveniently located in the city, the room was nicely appointed and had comfortable beds. There was too little lighting and a hazardous entry to the bathroom. One had to step up to go into the bathroom and I tripped and fell twice as did my roommate. Combined with poor lighting this could have been tragic. My suggestion, pick another hotel and check out the rooms more carefully. The best part of the Radisson stay was the tour guide through the city. Her name was Hannakah. She watched out for us and was a wealth of Amsterdam information. Read Less

This was my "retirement vacation" after 33 years with the Fire Department. My wife and I saw the ads for Viking River cruises and said "why not?" My wife used to book corporate travel when she worked in the corporate world, so she handled the arrangements. We decided to spend a couple of extra days in Europe on each end of the cruise, so we did 2 extra days in Amsterdam and 2 in Basel, Switzerland. She booked the trip, and when the itinerary came in, we were a little concerned. The initial trip over, we would have flown out of Boston with a connecting flight from Keflavik, Iceland. We prefer direct flights, but this for this leg of the trip it wasn't a major concern. The return flight, however had us leaving Zurich, catching a connecting flight in Copenhagen to Keflavik and then to Boston.. it would have been total of 13 hours to get home. We inquired about getting direct flights, we got a Boston to Amesterdam flight on Delta. The return trip was from Zurich to New York/JFK with connecting flight to Boston on Delta. Our flight was nice, we arrived in Amsterdam around 7:30 their time. We were met at the airport by a Viking representative, who made sure that we and our luggage made t to the hotel. The hotel was the Raddison Blu. it was very nice and we ate at the restaurants at the hotel. We did do a hop on/hop off boat tour of Amsterdam. One of our stops was the Van Gogh Museum (my wife is a student of art history). If you take the boat tour, make sure that you get back early enough. the stop that was closest to our hotel closed. We ended up walking distance and eventually hailed a pedicab to take us back. The transit to the ship was smooth. There was still time before the ship set sail to do little exploring if one wished. We had a suite cabin, it was very nice, with a sitting room as well as a bedroom. We left Amsterdam in the evening and arrived in Kinderjik, a UNESCO heritage site. We did an excursion to the windmills. One of the things that Viking does is have a group for those with mobility issues. One gets to see the same things, the tour is at a slightly slower pace. After Kinderjik, we cruised downriver to Cologne (Köln in German) We did a walking tour in the afternoon and visited the Köln Cathedral. In the evening I did the Köln pub crawl, visiting 5 different German pubs and sampling different varieties of Kölsch beers. Next was Koblenz and Rudeshiem, where we toured the Marksburg Castle. Again we cruised down the Rhine to Heidelberg and Speyer. Speyer had a transportation museum, with many aircraft, trains, boats and vehicles. It is hard to miss a Boeing 747 in Lufthansa livery looking like it just took off! I would have loved to tour the museum, but being a self professed "airplane geek" I probably would have missed the boat! We left Speyer and headed for Strasbourg, in the Alsace Lorraine. Strasbourg is beautiful. I took a winery tour there. We made one more stop in Germany...Breisach. We took a bus to the Black Forest region. Upon the return, we set sail for Basel. Once we arrived in Basel, we disembarked, then took the bus to Lucerne. Our hotel room at the Grand Hotel Lucern was, in a word, magnificent! We spent two days in Lucerne, Taking a Lake Lucerne cruise as well as visiting the Titlis Glacier. We said goodbye to Switzerland as we drove by bus to Zurich and then home. Food: The food on the boat is awesome! Breakfast is served buffet style , with many choices. Lunch is low key, dinners are wonderful .There are usually 3 different menu choices as well as 3 "staples"... I could go on and on about our experience with Viking, but I would probably be writing the equivalent of Dostoevsky's War and Peace. If you are thinking about going on a Viking River Cruise, take my advice... DO IT! Read Less

The cabins were roomy enough for two to move around in easily; the furnishings were very nice and the veranda was much appreciated and much used. The staff were great, with special mention to our cabin steward, the captain and the maitre'd, not to take anything away from anyone else. Everyone bent over backwards to please and succeeded. The food was excellent. The wait staff was excellent. The tours were well planned and informative, and the four tour buses that followed the route of the ship and drove the tour groups was at once unexpected and appreciated. There are no negatives of any kind that I can apply to our cruise. We will definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

This was our first trip to Europe so we decided to try a river cruise. The PBS advertisements were so enticing for Viking we contacted them. We also contacted other river cruise lines and compared. Viking had everything we wanted and more. The room we chose had a balcony and every available space was used so efficiently. We loved the heated floor in the bathroom and the shower. After going on a large ship cruise this was a welcome feature! The public spaces were spacious, well designed and comfortable. The staff was there to help us with our every need. After a long day of sightseeing and walking they met us with warm, damp rolled up white towels to wipe our face and necks, a lovely touch! The food was excellent with wonderful choices. Its amazing all they can do with the size of the kitchen. So efficient and immaculate. The excursions were everything we hoped for. We learned so much from their guides. We took the pre-extension in Lucerne. The hotel was very nice and located near old town and excellent restaurants. Loved the Black Forest and the cuckoo clock demonstration - came home with two! We have already booked a cruise with Viking for 2017. That should more than show how we enjoyed our cruise! Read Less

My wife and I cruised with Viking for the second time. This time we were on Viking Hlin. The entire staff were truly fantastic - from the Captain, Hotel Manager and the rest of the crew. They were a really happy crew and that was reflected in their work and service to their guests. The food was, as usual, magnificent and we met some lovely people along the way. Viking make sure there are alternative trips for all levels of fitness and ensured that no-one missed out. If you felt you didn't enjoy this cruise, then it would have been your own fault! Read Less
