We have sailed with Viking previously (Christmas Markets of the Danube) 3 years ago, and in fact, on the same ship. The ship hasn't changed, but the crew, and attitudes, has. This trip we opted for deck one (cabin 110) and the cabins are just fine....typical for a river cruise ship, with the usual space constraints. The crew was very good (Arturo, the Concierge) said we would remember him...a true statement. The rest of the crew and staff went out of their way to assist my wife when she had to return to the ship due to medical reasons. (The ship was to drop us off, immediately sail on, and remeet later.) All of that was good. One problem was the itinerary...it just did not take full advantage of the Rhine River. Our stop in Kobletz is a prime example. We docked at the base of the cable car to the castle, just a few meters from the statue area at the conflux of the Rhine and Mozelle Rivers. Absolutely no time was allocated to be able to go into the town, or to explore the monuments. The group going on the included castle tour grabbed their bus and took off. Those remaining going to the alternate (extra cost) castle headed to the cable cars, hand went up on their tour. The ship, in the meantime, headed up river, to dock near where the first group would end up. After the second group finished their castle tour, we all boarded buses and went to where the ship was waiting. Food was not as good this trip, and there were some nights the "always available" menu was needed. Entertainment was very good, as brought aboard. However, why, in Germany, was there no "oom-pa-pa" band? Will we sail again with Viking? Yes. They do care, but they need to do some refresher courses. Read Less

This was our first cruise of any kind, and we weren't sure what to expect. While the cabin was a bit tight we easily adjusted to its size and figured out how to co-exist in it. The common areas were very well appointed and comfortably accommodated all the passengers. We particularly enjoyed being on the aquavit terrace during the open cruising portion of the Rhine. The food was top-notch; there was enough variety to satisfy most every taste. We didn't book the beverage package, and found that the complimentary wine and beer at lunch and dinner were more than enough. The included tours in each port met our expectations, although the local guides were a hit-or-miss proposition--some were much better than others and it often depended on which group you were assigned to. The highlights for us were the Heidelberg Excursion and the Markburg Castle tour. But what impressed us most was the service-- the entire Viking staff was well-trained, polite and seemed dedicated to making sure each passenger had a great experience. We were so satisfied that we've booked another Viking cruise for the Fall of 2017. BTW, we arrived a day early in Basel and stayed two additional days in Amsterdam following the cruise on our own. There were several of us planning on taking this cruise. The lead couple choose due to recommendations. They dropped out due to health issues but the remaining three traveled on the Hlin. We loved it! the staff was very accommodating, the tour director very knowledgeable and the cabins were well appointed. We enjoyed the Unesco tours and seeing the beautiful cities we visited. We added days in front and back of the cruise. Amsterdam and Lucerne.. The transfers between hotel and ship and vice versa were easy. The buses used to take us to the sites were nice and comfortable. Bus drivers were polite and accommodating. The tour person on the buses were full of knowledge and very interesting. We are planning to cruise the Danube in the future as well as cruising on your ocean liners to the Mediterranean. We would and have recommended Viking to all who ask. Our experience was wonderful and we have enjoyed relating our stories of the trip to our families and friends. We connected well with a few of the staff and got to know about there origins and families. The entertainment was fun and interesting. We had music of Germany and of France while in those ports and on board entertainment with a pianist and the cruise directors game nights. There was ample opportunity to speak to the members of the crew about the places you were visiting and their recommendations about what to see or do. The staff was wonderful and extremely helpful. Chose this cruise because I love Germany but had never seen it from the river. Enjoyed seeing so many things but wished we spent more time in each port. The food was outstanding as was the service and ship's company. I saw Amsterdam, Kinderdiijk,Heidelberg, Marksburg, Speyer Cologne, Colmar, Straussberg, Basel, and Lucerne for the first time. I enjoyed all the tours but especially enjoyed the one in Lucerne. Breakfast is always my favorite meal and it was excellent everyday with a large variety to choose from. With the silver spirit package I was always able to enjoy a cocktail, wine or beer without additional expense. I wish I had an explanation of my on ship credits before I checked out. I had no idea I had them until the last day and had to make many last minute decisions I wish I could have made sooner. That seemed to be a common problem on my ship. Read Less

The daily tours were entertaining, informative and the guides provided were very knowledgeable. We enjoyed that there was only one seating for the meals. There was a wonderful buffet breakfast. Casual lunches served in the dining room or the outside front deck. The late afternoon cocktail hour gave guest time to relax prior to dinner. Because of the relaxed atmosphere aboard the river cruise we were able to make friends with many other couples and form lasting relationships. ALL the Viking cruise employees were friendly, caring, helpful, and were their to serve you. We enjoyed our first Viking River Cruise so much that we have booked another cruise vacation for this September 2017. We chose this cruise as we were going to a wedding in Germany and we elected to cruise the Rhine prior to the wedding. We has wanted to go on a river cruise as we had seen the Viking advertisement and I found the advertisement to accurately describe what we experienced. Every day we were in an interesting port and had great guides. When we were on the boat we had great food and enjoyed the company of many interesting people. We liked this cruise so much we went on another Viking cruise on the Danube in December. The second cruise was just as good as the first one. The beauty of the Christmas Markets and the less crowded tourist locations made the cold seem just fine. We would definitely consider another cruise. We made new friends on both of our cruises and have kept in contact after the cruise. We are very impressed with the quality of Viking and would book again at some time in the future. Read Less

We wanted to extend the visit to include 2 extra days in Lucerne. It was the perfect prelude to the cruise itself. We had a delightful stay and the cruise was beyond description. The accommodations were perfect.. so comfortable we slept well. The tour guides were all excellent and we learned a great deal on our visits through the country side. The food onboard was gourmet all the way and the service was perfect. The staff friendly and efficient and I cannot say enough goo things about the entire vacation cruise. The entertainment was fun and the staff above expectations. I highly recommend every aspect of this cruise. We met a lot of awesome travelers and have stayed in touch with some of them and looking forward to visits from them in the near future. We are completely satisfied with every aspect of this vacation and looking forward to another trip in the future. I don't see how this trip could ever be topped because it was so perfect. There were snacks available around the clock. We lacked for nothing - our every need was anticipated and the tours were top notch. The transportation and freedom to revisit the towns were a very pleasant opportunity we did not expect; and we were catered to in every way possible. Read Less

The airline lost my luggage so the entire cruise, I had no luggage. The staff on the Hlin were excellent having my laundry done every night free of charge. The concierge called the airlines daily and was extremely helpful as all the crew. We would definitely do another river cruise on Viking We love the scenery along the Rhine as we would cruise to our next destination. It is all part of the wonderful experience. The food is always wonderful on the Viking River Cruises, and if you don't care for what is on the menu, they always off three standards. Ribeye steak, salmon and vegetarian. I ate the steak a few times, not because I didn't like anything else, but because it was so delicious! Read Less

We chose Viking for 2 reasons...firstly TV advertising..2ndly ...they offerred an exceptional package which included flights vs their competitors. Even though timing did not work for us and we changed carriers pricing was still less than offerred by comprtitors so booking through Viking was a real PLUS! We spent 3 days prior to the cruise in Amsterdam. Vikings staff were great in providing tips when we were on our own and the city tour they provided was very enjoyable. We stayed at the Hilton on a canal close to public transportation and downtown. Hotel staff from all the concierges to management could not do enough to make our stay comfortable. There were several cafes/restaurants and shops in close proximity and while the Hilton restaureant was very good it was nice to have lots of choice. Staff on HLIN are top notch! The ship manager (Jan) was wonderful with all the passengers; our Cruise Director held daily meetings to fill us in on the following days' activities; local information and other info she thought was beneficial. We were particularly impressed that she and her staff looked after the needs of those who may have been physically challenged...booking special transportation etc. The dining staff were wonderful....and genuinely interested in meetin your every need. will we travel agin with VIKING???YOU BET we will! Our trip was very enjoyable - we arrived by train in Amsterdam and boarded without difficulty. Employees were very friendly and helpful to get us settled. The dining experience was excellent. The tours we took were a propos, one tour in Colmar was totally fascinating. The scenery along the Rhine were just beautiful and not to be missed. We met very interesting folks on this cruise from other parts of the US, shared our views with them and we appreciated their views. Dinner time was often the most interesting. The entertainment while overnighting near Strasbourg was charming. This was a busy cruise, with tours daily and some of the excursions were a bit demanding But if one did not take the tours, how could you see the country? The cruse was great. Leaving in Basel was very well organized, we had our taxi when it was ordered, got the luggage delivered to the taxi and were off to the railroad station. Everything was well arranged and we look back to this experience with satisfaction. Read Less

We chose Viking because of the great variity of sailng dates, it was our first river cruise. We chose Rhine Getaway because we had not been to Germany nor Amsterdam before. We were impressed to be picked up at the airport by a private limo to take us to our hotel for our pre-cruise stay. The personel aboard was very welcoming, polite and friendly, the food excellent as well as the wine offered at meal time. We enjoyed the ship and cabin which were kept very clean. All public areas were well kept. Shore excursions, included and others, were well organized and guides were excellent. We looked at going to the Douro cruise but it was a little over our budget and it was not included in the early booking savings. Because of the small amount of people, it was more friendly than large cruises. We hope to go back, we really loved our trip! Read Less

I have severe food allergies and the maitre de, kitchen & dining room staff were attentive & cautious every time I entered either dining facility. We also enjoyed the fact that we had opportunities to walk and view all the sites and we had plenty of healthy exercise every day. The food on the boat was also very good. We typically ate breakfast on the back of the deck above the large dining area and the staff took great care of us up there. Also the piano bar area was very entertaining. Finally the Cruise Manager was very attentive and she did an excellent job of making sure everything went as planned. There were many highlights of this cruise, but one morning we sat on the upper deck and viewed many many castles as we cruised along for four hours. Thsi pare of the tour was very memorable. This was our first river cruise and based on reviews, we chose Viking and are so glad we did! This was one of the most incredible trips we've ever taken. Every last detail was perfectly planned out and executed. The staff on the board the boat was so helpful and cheerful that we felt completely spoiled! Dining -- Excellent. Great varied menu and they can modify for special diets as well. Portions were the right size and the quality was outstanding. Ship -- Ceilings are bit short for those of us over 6' but you get used to it. A bit of engine noise but after a couple of days you don't even notice it. Very clean, very new looking and pleasant. Cabin -- They are small but so efficient that you don't really notice. Tons of storage and the French balcony (sliding window) makes the room feel much bigger. The room staff keeps your cabin very clean, fresh towels and so on without ever interrupting your trip. Shore excursions are great and so low hassle! They have wonderful busses that take you from the boat to the attraction and then provide a great guide as well. The personal radio that they use is very good and you can wander quite aways from the guide and still hear them! Service -- Cant' give this enough stars! It's hard to express how nice, professional and caring these people are. Not just the cruise director but everybody you will have contact on that ship will make you feel like you are royalty! We arrived in Amsterdam very early in the morning as we had an overnight flight. Our Viking Cruise host met us while we were waiting for our luggage to come off the plane. We were then shuttled to our ship aboard a coach bus and given cold water immediately. It was a nice way to start. When we arrived at our ship, the staterooms weren't ready yet but we were encouraged to go to the dining room and enjoy a hot breakfast as service was still ongoing. Another fantastic way to start our trip. We did take advantage of the shuttle bus that took us to the center of Amsterdam so we could explore a bit. Unfortunately many of the museums were closed and the Anne Frank house was completely sold out but we took a wonderful canal cruise and saw many of the sights. The weather was a bit chillier than I thought it would be at that time of the year so we didn't spend any time on the sundeck but the Aquavita Terrace was wonderful! And on the one day that we were hit by rain while on an excursion, the ship's kitchen staff met us with hot chocolate and rum! YUMMY!!! The food was excellent! I loved that we had the choice of either a more 'informal' meal on the terrace or a more formal meal in the dining room for lunch and dinner. Even for breakfast there were many many choices from the to die for buffet to the order from the menu options. If you just wanted muffins, coffee, and cereal there were those options also! The bar staff was extremely friendly!! My husband and I looked forward to going to the lounge whenever possible because it was so welcoming! Ships staff weren't afraid to interact with us and it made it seem like we were cruising with family. Our cabin steward was fantastic! He entertained us with towel animals and fresh fruit each day! The ports are wonderful and the shore excursions are very interesting but bring your walking shoes!!! Walk before you go on the trip to get ready for the walking you will do. Many areas are accessible only on foot and sometimes the ship has to dock a decent hike from the main entrance to town. You will definitely get your exercise! We did extend our trip into Lucern Switzerland and I can't say that I would recommend that portion of the trip. Our hotel was again a distance from the city center and having to walk for everything was not the way I really wanted to end my trip. But my husband and I are looking forward to going on another excursion with Viking. We just know what we want to do more than we did for the first trip. Read Less

Every aspect with Viking was well planned and executed smoothly. Loved the local tour guides. Wish there was more time in every port, but walking tours really gave time to enjoy the locals. The entertainment that was brought on board at every port was very good. The tours are for active people and would not suggest for anyone that has limitations. The weather could have been better, spring may not be the best time for this cruise, however, Viking was prepared with umbrellas for all to use. I would definitely take another Viking River Cruise. The excursions were all extremely well planned and the guides did a wonderful job. Can not think of one thing I would change. The crew was wonderful and so friendly. After dinner there was some form of entertainment and then we would return to our room to find a printed version of the next day's activities. It was nice to have a choice of where to eat. We had dinners up on the atrium deck and could get smaller portions. The 2 evening performances were a nice addition and very enjoyable. All the tour guides were well informed and the ear phones made the tours much much better. The only disappointing experience was at the beginning in Amsterdam. We couldn,t find our Viking greeter and if we hadn't met another Viking passenger we would still be wandering the airport. Then when we found our meeting point no one would listen to the fact that we were doing a extended stay. When we got to the hotel there was no viking person to greet us we were just told at the desk that the Viking office was around the corner. We ended up doing Amsterdam on our own with a guidebook . Embarkation and disembarkation were timely and without problems. The ship itself was well-maintained and all public areas were spotless. I would travel with this cruise company again. Other guests on the cruise were pleasant, friendly, and interesting. A highlight of the cruise was the on-board narration of the beautiful mid-section of the Rhine River provided by the tour director, highlighting the castles along the way and the history of the area. The huge cathedral in Cologne was very interesting & saw unbelievable pictures of how it survived post -WWll while everything around it was destroyed.
