This was our first cruise and we enjoyed it immensely. Very competent and friendly crew. Every passenger seemed to like it too. The land tours were easy and the transportation was first rate and well organized from start to finish, Including the pick up at the Amsterdam airport.. The food and drinks were just right. The veranda was small, but was enjoyable. There were no noisy children to contend with on this cruise. We wished that the cruise had more time for Switzerland. This was at the end of the cruise and we had to be up and about very early to get to the airport. We did stay a couple of extra days at the start in Amsterdam in the Hilton. The hotel was a fair walk from the downtown area, but it was very comfortable and quiet. This was a great introduction to central Europe. Our next cruise will be on a ship to the Homelands next year, and it has been booked. Read Less

The entire journey was even better than expected. From the airport to the ship and back, was amazing. The crew of the Hlin became family very quickly and continually made sure that you had the best adventure possible. The ship was extremely clean and well managed. It was such a surprise to return from a wonderful shore excursion and have the crew waiting onboard with snacks and drinks as you reboarded the ship. The shore excursions where interesting, well planned and very informative. The crew leading the excursions were very knowledgeable and so willing to answer your every question. The variety of optional shore adventures were such a delight and added so much more to the all around experience. The food on board was such a delight and always a delicious variety was offered. They thought of everything. We have actually already booked another cruise for next summer. All around wonderful experience. I can't wait until 2018 and our next adventure with Viking River Cruise. All the transportation for excursions was awesome, the ship was just beautiful, we had a suite on the third deck was great to sit outside and watch the little towns go by the riverside. The wait staff was so friendly and made us laugh. The food was great, everything was just a fantastic trip!!! Want to do another river cruise with Viking!!! We would go and visit the little towns and they provided either walking or taking a little train. It was great, we had enough time to sample some of the towns food. Was just an overall GREAT trip. We flew into Zurich and stayed a couple of days in Lucern Switzerland, that was beautiful, the Viking representative was great, showed us around the town and how to find the boats and buses. Just a GREAT trip!! LOVED IT!! Read Less

This was our first Viking River Cruise (Rhine Getaway) and someone else in our group chose the itinerary and dates, so we were really just along for the ride--and what a wonderful ride it was! The ship is beautiful & comfortable; the staff is attentive, friendly, and helpful; the service is impeccable. The food and beverage selections were excellent, and I especially appreciated the healthy array of fruits, vegetables, and salads. All of our transfers were handled efficiently. The included daily excursions were excellent, with informative guides and a nice balance between the guided tours and free time to explore. We did not choose to pay for any of the other extra excursions and really felt like we had a co plate trip without the additional costs. We added the Amsterdam extension at the beginning of our cruise, and it provided a perfect way to recover from jet lag and enjoy the city before we embarked on our cruise. I would highly recommend a Viking River cruise to other travelers who wanted to try this type of tour. Read Less

There were six in our party and this cruise was an unanimous choice by all of us. The crew could not have been nicer, the food was wonderful and our cabin was very comfortable. The weather did not cooperate as it rained every day but one. My favorite city was Strausburg ( we had sun that day) but the city is beautiful. We also enjoyed seeing the windmills and the scenery along the river. We would not hesitate going on another Viking cruise. One of the couples with us celebrated their 40th anniversary on the cruise and the ship gave them a bottle of champagne to share for the celebration. The one thing that impressed me was how clean the ship was and how the crew went out of their way to help make the cruise wonderful. We will have a hard time deciding which cruise to go on next. We wanted to experience a river cruise along the Rhine River and to see all the interesting cities along the way. We were not disappointed; the views and shore excursions were spectacular! We did a 2 day pre-cruise in Amsterdam and a 2 day post cruise in Lucerne. Amsterdam is definitely the city of bicycles and Lucerne had spectacular views of the Alps. Viking personnel gave us a very informative walking tour of Amsterdam and Lucerne. The information provided gave us the opportunity to go out on our own and tour the cities at our leisure. In Amsterdam, we did a canal cruise, visited the Van Gogh and Rijks museums and even had a tour of the infamous "Red Light District". In Lucerne, we visited the glacier museum and took a gondola ride to the top of Mt Stanserhorn (what a view from the top!). Our cruise along the Rhine was historically very interesting (castles, century old cities, WWII memorials). All the Viking shore excursions were well planned and organized. When arriving back at the boat, the executive chef would give us a special drink or snack as we walked on board. We had access to the crew (including the captain) if we ever a question, comment or concern. The boat and our cabin were keep clean and neat at all times. The food and drinks were excellent. Although there was no "formal" entertainment, Viking provided special "events" that were truly entertaining and relaxing. Read Less

Our first time on Viking and we were very impressed! The ship was in excellent condition, the crew was so gracious and helpful! Always willing to lend a hand. Embarkation went well, the only complaint would be that Basel is closed on Sundays, would like to have had the opportunity to visit some places there. The food was very good, what I would put in the top 95% of the foods I have had on other cruises. Dinners would correspond to the city/country we were in. The weather was a bit cool at times, but it was April. The provided excursions were very educational, and the optional ones we purchased were a great value, did the wine tour in Strasbourg and the beer tour in Cologne. All the tour guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining. We learned alot about the history of the areas we visited. We are definitely going to cruise with Viking again. Read Less

For a trip of a lifetime it was far beyond anything we could have expected. The boat...amazing. No sway, very luxurious. The roooms were bigger than we thought they would be. And we had a room next to our friends so sitting out on our veranda at nite was great. The food, WOW. I've eaten at alot of high end restaurants and the food on the ship was the best I've ever had, every night surprisingly it got better, even though I thought the food was the best I've ever tasted that nite. Thanks Chef Bobby. The staff was incredible. We mostly had Adrian and Krista look after us and they spoiled us rotten, we didn't want to leave the ship. the excursions were out of this world, I had black forest cake in the black forest WOOO! Just the history you experience makes you feel like your in a great dream that you don't want to end. We started out with four people in our group and by the end we had 17 people with us for dinner each nite. Great bunch of people. Gigi the lounge pianist was incredible. We interacted with him every nite and he took requests and even learned a song for someone in our group. We love you Gigi. He had as must fun as we did. We talked to just about everyone on the ship asking them where they were from and about their lives. Incredible bunch of people. I think they liked us too because one nite the Chef and the Captain came out and partied and danced with us in the lounge to the amazement of the servers haha. It was like one big happy bunch of friends, our gang and the crew. We booked our flight through Viking so we had everything taken care of from the time we landed until the time we left. We didn't have to worry about anything they had it all under control. What a load off that is. We got the silver package which lets you choose spirits, wine and beer off a high end list of alcohols. They give you wine or beer with lunch and dinner but you get a separate upscale menu for drinks if you have the silver package. That made our trip as well, because it let you try some of the finer alcohol with the food you were eating, and Krista was very knowledgeable about pairings and would recommend us to try this or that with certain foods. It ups the quality of your meals 10 fold and you have the added bonus of not having to sing for anything. Once we said we had the silver package Krista said she would take care of what ever we needed. And she did. Ivan the bartender was also amazing. We wanted to have mamosas on our balcony while cruising the Rhine at night and Ivan put a bottle of champagne, a bottle of orange juice and 4 glasses for us and our friends and walked it to our room for us. The excursions were so organized and timed our perfectly with one exception at one castle. there wasn't enough time to shop afterwards so it was really rushed. Everyone made them aware of that and all the future trips should have more time. All the other excursions were relaxed and their lollipop system for hearing the guide worked really well. The bus drivers were amazing drivers, and very professional. Top notch from start to end. Even though it's an expensive trip both my wife and I felt like we got our moneys worth and more. My wife said I have to end before I write a book lol. the best ship (Hlin) the best food the best crew the best excursions = the best trip ever Thank you Viking Read Less

Viking took care of everything and made the trip so relaxing and easy. It was exactly what we wanted with no surprises. The staff, service and amenities were top notch from our arrival at the airport through the tours and entertainment and all the way through our departure. Our room was more spacious than we thought it would be and it and the common areas were very clean and well maintained. We can't imagine trying to put a trip like that together on our own and Viking did all the leg work for us. We especially enjoyed the little Viking Daily newsletters and the evening port talks that kept us informed at all times. They took care of our every need while we were traveling. Truly unforgettable! It was our first-ever cruise experience to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. As two history majors, we wanted to experience the history and understand the culture. I wanted something easy, and Viking didn't disappoint. From reservations to arriving at the boat to getting back to the airport–we didn't have to do a thing except decide what I wanted to do while docked. Viking took care of everything else so we didn't have to research and plan. I loved the views from our room and the intimate environment as big ships with thousands of people just did not appeal to us. We met terrific people and enjoyed the meals and lounge areas very much. Viking created a very high bar for us based on our experience cruising from Amsterdam to Basel. We're hoping to take a Viking Ocean Cruise next - 900 people seems very manageable and not as overwhelming as other cruise lines. Read Less

Itinerary and price were the big draw draw us. Shore excursions being included in the price made it very affordable trip, and the flight too and from the ports was very convenient. The post trip extension in Switzerland is highly recommended. Don't look for a good bar experience, the entertainment was very laid back but it was perfect for us. The crew and staff are very friendly and helpful, the food and service were excellent. We had several choices at each meal and everything we tried was great. The weather was a little chilly for the time of year we went but we were expecting it and prepared. It did prevent us from making much use of the balcony. The cabin was functional and adequate which is all we wanted since we spent very little time in there. The bathroom was a bit small but it worked. All in all it was a fantastic trip and well worth the cost. Read Less

We had heard nothing but good things about Viking and we weren't disappointed. Our Viking rep was able to upgrade our cabin to a suite and it was great. The food was delicious and we enjoyed having the Aquavit Lounge as a dining option, especially for lunch. The included shore excursions were a great value. We took two optional tours and were not disappointed. There were well worth the money. Transfers to ship/airport were well organized. We cruised in November and the weather was COLD!!! Because of this we weren't able to enjoy the outside area of the ship but this could not be helped. The Viking agents were most helpful when we arrived at the Amsterdam airport as to directions, etc. Our experience convinced us to try out the Viking Ocean Cruise experience and have booked a cruise later this year. Every evening our tour director gave specific details for excursions for the next day. The ship newsletters also served as a great way to help us remember trip details and share with family and friends. Read Less

The bus driver was amazing! So many narrow streets we were holding our breath at times! He was always outside when we arrived lending a helping hand out of the bus. Embarkation and disembarking went smoothly. This is why I wanted to go on a river rather than ocean cruise, which to me is a floating city. I had time while waiting for my friends to arrive and waited in the bar with a glass of champagne. This was my retirement gifdt to myself. The food was excellent and such a variety. Every meal was 5-star. The wines selected were perfect. Service was exceptional. The ship itself was clean and the various areas were nicely decorated. We went with relatives who chose this cruise. They had been on a previous cruise and thought it exceptional. We were not disappointed. Beautiful clean ship, excellent service from airport shuttle to local guides, food and entertainment. The transportation for excursions was excellent. The "leisure" category was a good pace for older, disabled or just anyone who can't keep a pretty good pace or handle much walking. The mid Mid-Rhine was so scenic with so many beautiful castles along the river. I would do another River Cruise!!! I thought the use of local guides was a great idea. They were knowledgable about thier subject matter and engaged with our group. I definately recommend adding the extra time at the beginning. We spent 2 nights and 2 extra days in Amsterdam. We did not buy the day tours, choosing to go at our own pace and choices of sights but I would not recommend against their package. Pay attention to your flight times. Our return flight left so early that we saw nothing in Switzerland but the airport in the dark early morning- that was disappointing. Read Less

This was our first cruise of any kind, and we weren't sure what to expect. While the cabin was a bit tight we easily adjusted to its size and figured out how to co-exist in it. The common areas were very well appointed and comfortably accommodated all the passengers. We particularly enjoyed being on the aquavit terrace during the open cruising portion of the Rhine. The food was top-notch; there was enough variety to satisfy most every taste. We didn't book the beverage package, and found that the complimentary wine and beer at lunch and dinner were more than enough. The included tours in each port met our expectations, although the local guides were a hit-or-miss proposition--some were much better than others and it often depended on which group you were assigned to. The highlights for us were the Heidelberg Excursion and the Markburg Castle tour. But what impressed us most was the service-- the entire Viking staff was well-trained, polite and seemed dedicated to making sure each passenger had a great experience. We were so satisfied that we've booked another Viking cruise for the Fall of 2017. BTW, we arrived a day early in Basel and stayed two additional days in Amsterdam following the cruise on our own. Bus drivers were polite and accommodating. The tour person on the buses were full of knowledge and very interesting. We are planning to cruise the Danube in the future as well as cruising on your ocean liners to the Mediterranean. We would and have recommended Viking to all who ask. Our experience was wonderful and we have enjoyed relating our stories of the trip to our families and friends. We connected well with a few of the staff and got to know about there origins and families. The entertainment was fun and interesting. Every day we were in an interesting port and had great guides. When we were on the boat we had great food and enjoyed the company of many interesting people. We liked this cruise so much we went on another Viking cruise on the Danube in December. The second cruise was just as good as the first one. We chose Viking for 2 reasons...firstly TV advertising..2ndly ...they offerred an exceptional package which included flights vs their competitors. Even though timing did not work for us and we changed carriers pricing was still less than offerred by comprtitors so booking through Viking was a real PLUS! We spent 3 days prior to the cruise in Amsterdam. Vikings staff were great in providing tips when we were on our own and the city tour they provided was very enjoyable. We stayed at the Hilton on a canal close to public transportation and downtown. Hotel staff from all the concierges to management could not do enough to make our stay comfortable. There were several cafes/restaurants and shops in close proximity and while the Hilton restaureant was very good it was nice to have lots of choice. Staff on HLIN are top notch! The ship manager (Jan) was wonderful with all the passengers; our Cruise Director held daily meetings to fill us in on the following days' activities; local information and other info she thought was beneficial. The entertainment while overnighting near Strasbourg was charming. We also enjoyed the fact that we had opportunities to walk and view all the sites and we had plenty of healthy exercise every day. The food on the boat was also very good. We typically ate breakfast on the back of the deck above the large dining area and the staff took great care of us up there. Also the piano bar area was very entertaining. Finally the Cruise Manager was very attentive and she did an excellent job of making sure everything went as planned.
