Friends of ours were going and we said we wanted to go, too. Neither my husband nor I had ever been on a cruise or wanted to, but this sounded fascinating and we said, let's go. And we had a terrific time. The accommodations were terrific. The tours and all the tour guides were excellent. The entire staff were all excellent. (Sorry, if I keep using the same adjective, but what can I do, when everything and everyone were so great?) The lounge was lovely with its indoor and outdoor seating. We enjoyed lunch there every day. The restaurant was comfortable and the food was varied and very good. We thoroughly enjoyed the upper deck under the awning with the terrific views of the coastline as we sailed up the Rhine. The other people on the ship were delightful. The amenities were great. We got a real kick out of going through the locks, never having seen anything like that before.. Everything was just excellent. (Sorry to be so monotone. Not my fault. The trip was fantastic.) This was our first river cruise and we weren't sure what to expect. Not to worry. The 7 day cruse down the Rhine was everything we expected and more. The cruise director (Daniel) was one of the highlights of the cruise. He was funny and engaging and always so helpful with any problem we might have. He should get a raise. The level of service was absolutely wonderful. And the side trips were both educational and fun. Loved the day we toured the windmills, and the castles and cathedrals we saw were spectacular. Another side trip we loved was a day trip through the Black Forest. Absolutely beautiful, and the guides we had were so knowledgeable. We were more than satisfied with the ship, the food, the service and the wonderful excursions. We're going on another Viking river cruise next summer. This time down the Rhone river. Can hardly wait! This was our second Viking cruise and it was every bit as enjoyable as our first! Our first cruise was on the Danube in December, visiting Christmas markets along the way. This time we wanted to enjoy the outside decks in warmer weather. Embarkation was like coming home! We were familiar with the layout and rhythms of the ship and the staff make us feel welcome and comfortable. I asked about a particular cocktail onboard and the bartender didn't have one particular ingredient. When I found it in town and gave it to her, she made sure to ask if I wanted my "special cocktail" when she saw me! Meals on board offered plenty of variety and gave us plenty of opportunity to meet other guests. We were graced with beautiful weather which enabled us to enjoy the outside decks while sailing. The staff made the cruising time very enjoyable and were very attentive with beverages and treats. Going through the locks was a lot of fun, especially when the captain was on deck to talk about the procedure. The guides for shore excursions ranged from very good to excellent, although we would have appreciated a little less time on formal tours and more free time in the various cities. The service onboard was excellent across the board! All staff members we encountered were friendly, attentive, helpful and dedicated to a high level of customer service. We were especially impressed when we had disembarked and were sightseeing in Basel, one of the staff members, on his day off in town, recognized and greeted us! The Viking staff courtesy doesn't end at the end of the gangplank! Would we take another Viking river cruise? Absolutely! We're already planning our next one! Read Less

Fantastic trip. We had seen the ads on Public Broadcasting for years and always talked about doing one. 45th Wedding Anniversary made a great excuse. Viking handled everything smoothly and professionally. The crew went out of their way to make us feel at home. Having the Captain being a former submariner (I'm a retired submarine CO) was special and his eagerness to show me his ship was great. The tours were great. Having a local actually lead the excursions gives you a much more in-depth understanding of the city and people. The tour of Strasbourg was a particular highlight specifically because the guide, a young college student, was so knowledgeable and entertaining. The cabin was very comfortable and the veranda stateroom was perfect for relaxing while watching the river roll by. The meals were excellent and a great way to make new friends. We decided on a Viking River boat cruise for our honeymoon. Being my first cruise, I was off unaware of what to expect. Yet, my husband had been on a few previously and only heard amazing things via his colleagues and or friends. It was one of the best decision we made, as the entire experience was extremely enjoyable! What made it such, was the crew of the Hlin. Candi, was superb in every aspect. She made each transition, every port, every excursion, amazingly smooth and simple! Michael, the hotel manager, made our stay effortlessly. So many amazing members of the crew on the Hlin, I could not name just a single person as they all made our experience wonderful! Not to mention, everyone was also extremely courteous. If you are at all thinking of booking a river boat cruise, Viking is the only way to go! The entire experience was about the countries and the culture. So, by far the best option! Read Less

This was our first cruise and we enjoyed it immensely. Very competent and friendly crew. Every passenger seemed to like it too. The land tours were easy and the transportation was first rate and well organized from start to finish, Including the pick up at the Amsterdam airport.. The food and drinks were just right. The veranda was small, but was enjoyable. There were no noisy children to contend with on this cruise. We wished that the cruise had more time for Switzerland. This was at the end of the cruise and we had to be up and about very early to get to the airport. We did stay a couple of extra days at the start in Amsterdam in the Hilton. The hotel was a fair walk from the downtown area, but it was very comfortable and quiet. This was a great introduction to central Europe. Our next cruise will be on a ship to the Homelands next year, and it has been booked. Read Less

The crew of the Hlin became family very quickly and continually made sure that you had the best adventure possible. The ship was extremely clean and well managed. It was such a surprise to return from a wonderful shore excursion and have the crew waiting onboard with snacks and drinks as you reboarded the ship. The shore excursions where interesting, well planned and very informative. The crew leading the excursions were very knowledgeable and so willing to answer your every question. The variety of optional shore adventures were such a delight and added so much more to the all around experience. The food on board was such a delight and always a delicious variety was offered. The wait staff was so friendly and made us laugh. The food was great, everything was just a fantastic trip!!! Want to do another river cruise with Viking!!! We would go and visit the little towns and they provided either walking or taking a little train. It was great, we had enough time to sample some of the towns food. Was just an overall GREAT trip. The ship is beautiful & comfortable; the staff is attentive, friendly, and helpful; the service is impeccable. The food and beverage selections were excellent, and I especially appreciated the healthy array of fruits, vegetables, and salads. All of our transfers were handled efficiently. The included daily excursions were excellent, with informative guides and a nice balance between the guided tours and free time to explore. We did not choose to pay for any of the other extra excursions and really felt like we had a co plate trip without the additional costs. We added the Amsterdam extension at the beginning of our cruise, and it provided a perfect way to recover from jet lag and enjoy the city before we embarked on our cruise. We took the Viking Delling cruise on the Danube (Nuremberg to Budapest) in July, 2014 and loved every minute. We were so impressed we decided to take the Rhine cruise last month. Where the food on the Delling was always excellent and regional dishes were featured, the meals on the Hlin were disappointingly repetitious, with generally over-cooked meat. It was especially bad on Friday, when the "special German dishes" of weiner schnitzel and sauerbraten were both so over-cooked and tough, they were just plain awful. On another evening , ahi tuna was cooked till it was uniformly gray. Entertainment on the Delling was, as we remember, very enjoyable, with a good deal of diversity. The piano player on the Hlin, while (I'm sure) a fine musician, may have modeled his performance on Bill Murray's "Nick the Lounge Singer" bit on SNL. Flourishes abounded, making every tune sound like every other. We did not "hang out" to listen to him. The shore excursions were fairly enjoyable, particularly the tours of Amsterdam, the Kinderdijk Windmill, Marksburg Castle, Cologne, Strasbourg and Colmar. However, the Heidelberg Castle tour was a total waste of time, our guide was not good, and the town is merely one very long street of nothing-noteworthy shops, in which we had no interest. The excursion to the Black Forest, while picturesque, was mostly geared to trying to encourage us tourists to buy cuckoo clocks. The demonstration on making them was so crowded, we couldn't see or hear. Finally, I think it would have been nice to be given some information about Basel, rather than being just left on our own, since the Tinguely Museum was closed on Monday when we tried to go. Wanted to see some of those castles, the Black Forest, and to celebrate our 55th anniversary. Had not been to some of the cities before. Basel was very nice. Good walking tour by Viking guide. Hotel was well situated. Strasbourg was a delight, seeing all the storks in their nests with the hungry babies demanding food. Interesting cathedral and canals. The Black Forest stop was wonderful. The glass shop was fascinating. Bought a lot of pieces and had them sent home. Had Black Forest cake and watched the cuckoo clocks do their thing. Heidelberg, its castle and Old Town were interesting. Rudesheim had charming architectural features. Cologne had a soccer tournament going on and people had on the colors of their favorite teams and sang team songs as they were going to the stadium. We had a lock engraved with our names and wedding date and attached it to the bridge going over to a viewing tower. Marksburg Castle in Koblenz was a tough hike up the hills and over uneven ground in the castle. Did have wonderful cards to buy and we got to sit in the sun waiting for our group to go into the castle. Although we've been to Amsterdam before we had never been to Kinderdijk and enjoyed all the windmills. Food wasn't anything to write home about. Although I did enjoy the German night. Read Less

The weather was bad. We did enjoy Basel a lot. Would love to go back there sometime. We liked Strasboug, France, Black Forest and Cologne, Germany. The ship entertainment was weak to non-existent. We found the focus on board was to sell drinks. We don't drink alcohol and found we were outsiders on own trip. Too much focus on drinking and not enough for people like us. The Airport connections were terrible. We were dumped off at 5 am at Amsterdam and abandoned , when the British flight desk didn't open till 6:30 am. All were rude. No place to sit. Awful! The weather did not cooperate as it rained every day but one. My favorite city was Strausburg ( we had sun that day) but the city is beautiful. We also enjoyed seeing the windmills and the scenery along the river. We would not hesitate going on another Viking cruise. One of the couples with us celebrated their 40th anniversary on the cruise and the ship gave them a bottle of champagne to share for the celebration. We wanted to experience a river cruise along the Rhine River and to see all the interesting cities along the way. We were not disappointed; the views and shore excursions were spectacular! We did a 2 day pre-cruise in Amsterdam and a 2 day post cruise in Lucerne. Amsterdam is definitely the city of bicycles and Lucerne had spectacular views of the Alps. Viking personnel gave us a very informative walking tour of Amsterdam and Lucerne. The information provided gave us the opportunity to go out on our own and tour the cities at our leisure. In Amsterdam, we did a canal cruise, visited the Van Gogh and Rijks museums and even had a tour of the infamous "Red Light District". In Lucerne, we visited the glacier museum and took a gondola ride to the top of Mt Stanserhorn (what a view from the top!). Our cruise along the Rhine was historically very interesting (castles, century old cities, WWII memorials). All the Viking shore excursions were well planned and organized. When arriving back at the boat, the executive chef would give us a special drink or snack as we walked on board. We had access to the crew (including the captain) if we ever a question, comment or concern. The boat and our cabin were keep clean and neat at all times. The food and drinks were excellent. Embarkation went well, the only complaint would be that Basel is closed on Sundays, would like to have had the opportunity to visit some places there. The food was very good, what I would put in the top 95% of the foods I have had on other cruises. Dinners would correspond to the city/country we were in. The weather was a bit cool at times, but it was April. The provided excursions were very educational, and the optional ones we purchased were a great value, did the wine tour in Strasbourg and the beer tour in Cologne. For a trip of a lifetime it was far beyond anything we could have expected. The boat...amazing. No sway, very luxurious. The roooms were bigger than we thought they would be. And we had a room next to our friends so sitting out on our veranda at nite was great. The food, WOW. I've eaten at alot of high end restaurants and the food on the ship was the best I've ever had, every night surprisingly it got better, even though I thought the food was the best I've ever tasted that nite. Thanks Chef Bobby. The staff was incredible. We mostly had Adrian and Krista look after us and they spoiled us rotten, we didn't want to leave the ship. the excursions were out of this world, I had black forest cake in the black forest WOOO! Just the history you experience makes you feel like your in a great dream that you don't want to end. We started out with four people in our group and by the end we had 17 people with us for dinner each nite. Great bunch of people. Gigi the lounge pianist was incredible. We interacted with him every nite and he took requests and even learned a song for someone in our group. We love you Gigi. He had as must fun as we did. We talked to just about everyone on the ship asking them where they were from and about their lives. Incredible bunch of people. I think they liked us too because one nite the Chef and the Captain came out and partied and danced with us in the lounge to the amazement of the servers haha. It was like one big happy bunch of friends, our gang and the crew. We booked our flight through Viking so we had everything taken care of from the time we landed until the time we left. We didn't have to worry about anything they had it all under control. What a load off that is. We got the silver package which lets you choose spirits, wine and beer off a high end list of alcohols. They give you wine or beer with lunch and dinner but you get a separate upscale menu for drinks if you have the silver package. That made our trip as well, because it let you try some of the finer alcohol with the food you were eating, and Krista was very knowledgeable about pairings and would recommend us to try this or that with certain foods. It ups the quality of your meals 10 fold and you have the added bonus of not having to sing for anything. Once we said we had the silver package Krista said she would take care of what ever we needed. And she did. Ivan the bartender was also amazing. We wanted to have mamosas on our balcony while cruising the Rhine at night and Ivan put a bottle of champagne, a bottle of orange juice and 4 glasses for us and our friends and walked it to our room for us. The excursions were so organized and timed our perfectly with one exception at one castle. there wasn't enough time to shop afterwards so it was really rushed. Everyone made them aware of that and all the future trips should have more time. All the other excursions were relaxed and their lollipop system for hearing the guide worked really well. The bus drivers were amazing drivers, and very professional. Top notch from start to end. Even though it's an expensive trip both my wife and I felt like we got our moneys worth and more. My wife said I have to end before I write a book lol. the best ship (Hlin) the best food the best crew the best excursions = the best trip ever Thank you Viking Read Less

Viking took care of everything else so we didn't have to research and plan. We chose the Rhine River cruise to celebrate our 25 th anniversary after spending the previous 2 months in Italy. 4 days prior to departure I received an email stating the ship had a broken propellor and that we would be bused to Breisach the day 2 port in Germany and not from our departure port of Basel, Switzerland. We were told to report to the Basel airport to meet the buses. Thus we missed the Basel tour and cruising upriver into Germany which is what we paid for and not a bus ride. Despite it being a Viking problem this matter was never brought up again and no compensation not even a free drink was offered as an apology. The following morning breakfast was a buffet fiasco with the wait line out the door. I felt as if I was on a Canaveral cruise. To make matters worse the wait staff really didnt smile except for perhaps one or two. On our 3 rd night when we returned to our suite 316 I checked the bedsheets and to my shock I could see blood stains and urine on the mattress cover showing through my sheet! I went to reception and the person there told me housekeeping was asleep. My response was " I'm not"! She came to our suite and she was appalled by what she saw! She did wake up the housekeeping manager but they didnt have clean linen! They put blankets as a mattress pad. The following morning the room cleaning girl apologized saying she didnt see it , but you had to be blind not to see the numerous blood and urine stains on both sides of the mattress pad. They gave us the drink package as an apology but we dont really drink. The remainder of the cruise was just ok. Too much time on buses, not enough in the towns . The food on the cruise was ok (6 on a scale of 1 to 10 ) not great so we started eating upstairs in the Aquavit Terrace as our waiter Sandor was friendly and fantastic in comparison to the wait staff in the dining room that really didnt smile! One evening I asked Tony the head of Dining for one of the dishes from upstairs and he told me to get it myself! I will say that Arturo our concierge was great. He was always willing to help and service with a smile. He indeed was a pleasure to interact with. The day we were to depart the ship the steward that came to get our bags was drinking a cup of coffee that he spilled on our luggage! Totally unprofessional! I'm so disappointed with Viking! The food was delicious and we enjoyed having the Aquavit Lounge as a dining option, especially for lunch. The included shore excursions were a great value. We took two optional tours and were not disappointed. There were well worth the money. Transfers to ship/airport were well organized. We cruised in November and the weather was COLD!!! Because of this we weren't able to enjoy the outside area of the ship but this could not be helped. The Viking agents were most helpful when we arrived at the Amsterdam airport as to directions, etc. Our experience convinced us to try out the Viking Ocean Cruise experience and have booked a cruise later this year. Every evening our tour director gave specific details for excursions for the next day. The ship newsletters also served as a great way to help us remember trip details and share with family and friends. Read Less

We went with relatives who chose this cruise. They had been on a previous cruise and thought it exceptional. We were not disappointed. Beautiful clean ship, excellent service from airport shuttle to local guides, food and entertainment. The transportation for excursions was excellent. The "leisure" category was a good pace for older, disabled or just anyone who can't keep a pretty good pace or handle much walking. The mid Mid-Rhine was so scenic with so many beautiful castles along the river. I would do another River Cruise!!! I thought the use of local guides was a great idea. They were knowledgable about thier subject matter and engaged with our group. I definately recommend adding the extra time at the beginning. We spent 2 nights and 2 extra days in Amsterdam. We did not buy the day tours, choosing to go at our own pace and choices of sights but I would not recommend against their package. Pay attention to your flight times. Our return flight left so early that we saw nothing in Switzerland but the airport in the dark early morning- that was disappointing. Read Less
