We chose the Rhine River cruise because we had friends that took it and they said it was Fantastic ! Our Fiftieth Anniversary was coming up and we decided to see for ourselves. What our friends told us did not come close to describing what an absolutely Spectacular experience Viking provides. From the moment we arrived at the ship, to the (unfortunate) moment that we had to leave, everything was perfect. Our cabin was immaculate upon our arrival and was maintained that way for the entire trip. My wife has a very strict special diet and the chef came to our table the first night to discuss it with her & almost every night thereafter to make sure that he was meeting her needs. If you have some special dietary needs? Have no fear ! Viking can & will accommodate! The shore excursions are so well managed & organized that you would have to really work hard to get lost, due to the wonderful tour guides (all English speaking) that are easy to follow & extremely informative. All I can say is "THANK-YOU VIKING" for a Cruise of a life time. We are now in the planning stages for our next Viking River Cruise! Read Less

Viking as a cruise company once again provided a terrific cruise ship and staff. This was our second Viking river cruise and everything about this company and its employees is top shelf. But I didn’t like the itinerary on this cruise as well as our initial cruise, which was southern France. This cruise up the Rhine was just not as interesting and the cities were not as picturesque. You can’t go wrong picking Viking as your river cruise company. But make sure you’ll enjoy the stops on your cruise before you book it. The southern France cruise ended up docked in a new city every morning with easy access right off the boat directly into the new city. The Rhine cruise in contrast often involved cruising during the day and docking in places where a bus trip was necessary to get to the city center. Again the cities visited were just not as interesting and there was too much down time cruising during the day. Read Less

We had heard so many wonderful things about Viking cruises - the ships, the tours, the food. It was all true; we had a fabulous trip. We took excursions to Basel and Amsterdam, which were both terrific cities. We also traveled by train to Lucerne while in Basel, and had a delightful lunch by the water there. Our cabin was beautiful and comfortable, the service for the room and dining was exceptional. All of the tours were well done and interesting, and we enjoyed exploring on our own as well. There was plenty of time for this, which we appreciated. The entertainment on board was lots of fun, and our activities director and all the staff were friendly and fun. We traveled with two other couples and had a fantastic vacation together. We are going on another Viking cruise in July 2018, and hope to take more in the future. Read Less

My husband and I sailed on the Viking Hlin - Rhine Getaway. What a Fabulous time we had! We extended our trip pre cruise 2 days in Amsterdam, and 2 days post cruise in Lucerne, Switzerland. Viking met us at the airport in Amsterdam, transferred to our hotel in Amsterdam. Our hotel was in a great location - city center- very easy to walk to many sights, we also did the Hop on - Hop off bus and canal boat. We went in April, hoping to see the Tulips in bloom, and they were just starting to bloom-- so beautiful, Keukenhof is a must see- absolutely stunning! Embarkation was very simple, walked on ship and checked in, like checking in at a hotel! We had a balcony cabin on the ship, well worth it! The ship was beautiful, service was fantastic, Dining was wonderful, many options, and very tasty! There was some kind of entertainment every night, from the piano player, to Glass blowing, to local groups that boarded for the evening, we always had a fun evening! Shore excursions were very nice, we did the included ones and saw so much every day. We also would walk around in the different ports and explore on our own. We were very lucky to have beautiful weather, 70's and 80's!!!! Our 2 days post cruise in Lucerne, Switzerland was Amazing, highly recommend. We did an optional all day tour there, "Pearls of Switzerland" it was fantastic. We flew home from Zurich, Switzerland. We paid the $50.00 pp extra to select our flights, well worth it. In summary, Viking was Fabulous, 1st class all of the way, I highly recommend them. Would love to do another River cruise or a Viking Ocean cruise! Read Less

We met some wonderful people, that we now call our friends. The food and the dining staff were AMAZING! What more can I say? This trip exceeded our expectations, and we are now booked on 2 trips this year with Viking. We cannot wait to go again!! We will highly recommend Viking to all of our friends and family, and have raved about this trip since we returned in 2018. We will now travel with Viking every opportunity that we have. Read Less

Viking had an itinerary that enabled us to see tulips in bloom and visit great ports. Viking provides good value for the money. The food was excellent and the chef was top notch and very accommodating. The ports of call were all very interesting and provided us with great memories. Amsterdam was a great city to visit enriched with culture and amazing scenery. The ship was very nice but the rooms were very small and often uncomfortable. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is claustrophobic. We have been on other river cruises where we found the ships to be more elegant and rooms ampler. We like traveling on Viking but would research other companies to compare cost versus value. When comparing buy one get one for free you need to check what is included and compare the total costs (including excursions, trips, transportation, etc.) to determine your best value. Viking does a generally good job but you do get what you pay for. Read Less

Opportunity to see this area and also room from large group. We were very excited about cruising the Rhine River. We had not been to this part of the world and thought the experience would be fun. We were not disappointed. We made this trip with five other couples and the ship was more than adequate to meet our needs. The excursions offered us the variation in opportunities we were looking for and the chance to get to know others on the trip was a real treat. The cruise through the castles was amazing. Hard to believe you can cruise so close to so many historic buildings. The stops along the way provided a great mix of both small villages and larger cities. We could not believe the access to quaint villages as well as historic larger cities, and the number for significant cathedrals was outstanding. The trip to the top of Cologne was one of the highlights of our trip. We will definitely return for another cruise. Read Less

I can't say enough good things our Viking cruise. We had a veranda cabin and it was very spacious. The veranda was not really needed in November but it gave us great view of the locks. From the moment you get off the plane, Viking takes care of you. The included tours in each port are more than enough to get to know the ports. We took several optional tours and would highly recommend the beer culture of cologne tour! Also the medival city of Colmar was fascinating and had time for shopping. The dining room staff were all very friendly. There is no assigned seating so you can meet new people at every meal. There were terrific soups every day. That was great after those cold days touring Germany and France. Entertainment was good in the lounge and drink prices are reasonable. This is not really a party ship as you are getting up early to tour. Overall, I highly recommend Viking. Read Less

We really enjoyed the ease of having an ear piece to hear our tour guide so that we could take in the beauty of our surroundings without having to strain to hear what was being said. Ship itself was clean and welcoming. Our cabin while on the small side worked perfectly considering we didn't spend much time in it and we loved the fact that we could use the WiFi and on-board computers if necessary. Still, we accepted these minor problems and really enjoyed the trip. Staff was top notch, food very good- especially the breads and pastry. Wines and beer that were part of the lunch and dinner meals were fine. Daily tours that were part of the cruise package were very good with the guides excellent, (didn't go on 2 of the days- just walked into the town we were docked at to explore. This was the Rhine River cruise and some of the package tours require moderate walking and being sure footed, (i.e. Marksburg castle), so you need to be ambulatory, We had a first deck cabin, (at waterline with closed "strip" window, no balcony, and this was fine as there was always plenty of room in the lounge to watch the shoreline sights. We appreciated how the staff was always looking out for our needs and our safety. We were impressed with how well the arrangements were coordinated for the varying departure times during the disembarkation. If there was anything we could have changed, we would have liked to hear a narration pointing out various points of interest, (such as sites of significance during World War II and other periods of history), as we sailed down the river. We ended up going back to the same table for dinner with some people we had met. What's different about this river cruise versus big cruises is that they have you back in time for each meal. You can leave the boat again after you eat. We did a few other excursions also that provided the transportation to and from the boat. The river cruise is so smooth you don't even know your moving. The dinning is relax and free form. The tours offered on the ship were first class. I have take other tours in Europe and have had guides with PhD conduct tours. The guides that Viking provided were just as skilled as any I have had before. My children played the board game Trival pursuit, the version on the Hlin is from England, is a little hard to follow. I think you should get an American version of the game. Armin Hermann is very warm and engaging. He sat and talked with me several times. My adult children were on the trip with me and my wife. From the moment I stepped onboard the Hlin, the Viking River Cruise staff made it their mission to ensure my vacation was enjoyable in every way. I spent three days in Amsterdam before my cruise and highly recommend the additional days to anyone taking the Rhine River cruise. After my final morning touring the city, embarkation was made easy by the Viking staff, and my bags were promptly delivered to my cabin. The food was excellent ever day, every meal, and the wait staff was always pleasant and accommodating. Local cuisine, fresh ingredients, and delicious meals were enjoyed by all. The pace was perfect and allowed us to relax as well as participate in excursions. We met lovely people with similar interests and have maintained contact with them. The atmosphere of the ship and services offered made me feel like I was on an expensive luxury cruise rather than being in the cheapest cabin available. After we got on board, I forgot all the hassle we had on the trip over. The Paris airport was a nightmare. We arrived with enough time to transfer to Basel but the red tape and disorganization made us miss our flight. We spent the entire day in the airport and missed seeing Basel. I believe that Viking should take this process into consideration and allow more time to get through Paris. Other than that, I would take another cruise with Viking in a New York minute. Read Less

We have seen VIking Cruises advertised for years and have had it as a goal since our last European vacation 5 years ago. Although it seemed like such an expensive extravagance, since cruising we realize what an exceptional value it is. We were offered free airfare and that convinced us to do it. And we are so happy we did! We went to Amsterdam on our own 2 days ahead of the cruise. It was tempting to let Viking handle it, but I'm glad we did it on our own, because it was much more inexpensive that way. Finding our way to our hotel from the airport was very simple and inexpensive by taking the train. We did have to pay a $100 pp diversion fee, but still felt we made the best choice. Our first day on the boat we were able to join in the walking tour of Amsterdam. From the moment we dropped our luggage near the port, we were treated like royalty. I can't say enough about the service! And we felt special because they took the trouble to remember our names and greet us whenever they saw us. I have to recognize Krista, Alex, Ivan, Jimmie, Rudy and Arias, Exceptional service! The rooms were comfortable. We chose a lower deck room because we didn't feel it was important to have a balcony and we really didn't miss it. They have done everything to make the small space as comfortable as possible. There was plenty of storage space. The food was fabulous with plenty of choices since there is an "always available" menu with a few choices. We only went to it once, choosing the steak which was very good. The included wines were good, but did not vary the entire week. They offered a Sauvignon Blanc and a Malbec. I don't know if there was more than one beer on offer or not, but when we did have it, it was the same. I don't remember the nameof it. We did not choose the silver package because we don't drink liquor, but most of the people we hung out with did, and they seemed to think it was worth it. The drink prices are reasonable. You have the option to add the silver package up to the second day of the cruise. We chose the dining room for every meal. There was much more on offer and we could still eat light if we chose to. Candi, our cruise director did a wonderful job and was always informative, patient and and jovial. We did not do any of the optional excursions. We felt the included excursions and then exploring on our own the rest of the time was a perfect mix. We enjoyed all of the included excursions. There was a singer, pianist most nights. Although it was clear English wasn't Gigi's first language, he did a good job and the crowd joined in with him and enjoyed his entertainment. There was another pair playing classical one night, but it wasn't our thing, so we went to the top deck, since we were going rough the locks that evening ( that in itself is an event worth seeing. We went through many locks but most of them were while we were sleeping.). Another afternoon, there was a speaker, but we missed it because we went in to explore the town. We would love to take another Viking Cruise. We couldn't give t a better recommendation! Read Less

After sailing on more than a dozen ocean cruises, my wife and I took the plunge on a river cruise. Our only regret is that we did not do so sooner. From the time of initial conversation with a Viking booking representative through completion of our journey in Amsterdam, our Viking experience has been awesome. We traveled to Basel on our own a full day before the Hlin's departure, staying at the Hotel Wettstein (highly recommended because of its location, price, and superior quality). A side note, many fellow Hlin passengers arrived in Basel the day of departure and to a person were suffering from lack of sleep after long trans-Atlantic flights. To do justice to the entire experience on the Hlin, I would need to write pages and pages. Therefore, I will only provide highlights: The ship's staff consistently went out of its way to assist every person on board. Not only were they professional and personable, but made you feel you were the most important person on board. The Hlin is a well maintained modern, clean, and quiet vessel. Public areas never felt crowded, and with floor to ceiling windows, one felt as though you were outside to enjoy the wonderful sights. Our cabin was on the Main deck (deck 1) with only an approximate 24" by 48" window. Because of the bird’s eye view it was the best cabin on the ship. The cabin was better than most upscale ocean cruise ship cabins. Dining was a pleasure, with varied and plentiful food. Our fellow passengers came from all socioeconomic levels; however, the caliber was significantly higher. The stops and sights were awesome. A previous reviewer had written "always have your camera with you", truer words could not have been written. Persons with mobility issues should not be dissuaded from taking a Viking cruise as the staff was observed going to extraordinary lengths to assist and accommodate. Would we go on another Viking river cruise, that process is already in the works. The hard decision is whether we do the Danube or Provence first. Read Less

This was a family/friends group of 25 multi-generational and widely diverse persons traveling together (ages 18-82). We choose the Rhine Getaway Amsterdam/Basel for our 1 week journey with post-Lake Lucerne. With such a wide range of ages, as well as backgrounds, I wasn't sure it would appeal or be equally enjoyed by all - HOWEVER, each and everyone of us were beyond thrilled with the entire vacation. It Exceeded all of our expectations. From the second we all were met at the airport by our Viking Host, to the minute we stepped off, every detail was handled. The staff and crew went above and beyond to make our entire trip exceptional for the whole group! Ship is very bright airy and open with views from every space. Cabins very clean, updated, and provided tons of storage. Our cabin steward was never seen, but our cabins were always impeccably cleaned and I never came back to an unmade room. If you laid out laundry/or pressing, it was done and returned within the hour. I can not say enough about the quality of service. My group met in the lounge for a bon voyage cocktail once on board - the bartender asked each of us our name & from that point forward remembered us, as well as our drink of preference! The Lounge was a favorite hangout. The entertainment pianist was fantastic appealing to all ages and played to her audience - we looked forward to every night to "unwind" from our busy day - with some nights "wound-up" for a fun filled night of singing and dancing. They also had several other entertainment performers/talks which were excellent. The food was great, never disappointing, however, it would have been nice to maybe have a late night snack or food available in the lounge or terrace restaurant late evenings. The upside to that is they do allow you to bring on food/drink from ports, so many nights we sampled our purchases in from the village we toured each day. The 24/7 coffee bar was awesome and not really that far of a walk from anyone's cabin. The coffee/espresso selection amazing and the cookies every afternoon/evening the best! The program director was a wealth of info and always available as well as the officers of the ship. The Captain was always available to answer maritime history, or navigational questions as we floated down the Rhine. Especially while moving thru the locks, which was very interesting. There were a few glitches like the ship needed to move during one port stop for generator installation while we were on our included tour, but the crew made sure it was the least disruptive as possible. Made for a long walk from the city center - but honestly, not really a huge issue. They at least saw that maintenance was handled to not cause us to deviate from our itinerary or miss any port time. One last note, as most, the initial reaction for the group was this trip would be an expensive vacation. HOWEVER, by the end, we all felt like it was a total value & exceptional price for everything included and the level of service that we each received. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Read Less
