My first cruise but not my last. I was educated, spoiled, entertained and got to experience large and small communities. The service was outstanding - cannot say enough. The ship was cozy with plenty of spots to curl up or relax and enjoy the shoreline vistas. I loved having local guides who could talk from personal experience and had pride and enthusiasm for their community. The evening entertain was fun but having a change of pace from a single piano player would have been nice. I met wonderful fellow travelers and the size of the ship ensured that you had a chance to interact with almost everyone. Special kudos to dining staff and our room attendant - my companion got sick and they went out fo their way to ensure she had what she needed. My one critique was the stacking up of ships at port which meant that at times you could not open your curtains unless you wanted to see the cabin in the ship docked right next to you. Read Less

Viking river cruise provides a well organized adventure! A romantic getaway... Found a deal on a Facebook ad that almost seemed too good to be true... but it was real.. and easy to book .. all documents came in a timely and organized manner. Great communication pre cruise on what to bring and we had an awesome time. Traveling to Europe the flights were perfect and met at the airport with safe drivers. Tours were well done with great guides. Free excursion options were nice to have and just enough down time to feel like a vacation! Staff was attentive and the tour director Debra was well informed and a delight to listen to .. her suggestions always helpfiul! Loved the technology used on the tours with the ear buds that allowed you to hear the guides and stay connected with the group. I would Certainly recommend Viking to friends wanting an easy way to see the world ! Read Less

We had gone on two previous Viking cruises and found them to be first rate. We actually did the Budapest to Nuremberg cruise several years ago, and then did the Rhine cruise; as good as the latter was, we much prefer the Danube cruise and love the mystery and majesty of the Danube. We found great food and an exceedingly helpful staff. It is so nice to be picked up at one airport and taken to another at the end of the trip. The guides in the various cities we visited were all very knowledgeable. The guide at Gottweig Abbey was especially good, although admittedly it helps that that is such a magical place! The staff on the ship were so polite and helpful, answering all our requests. I love the smooth professionalism of the wait staff at meals. And they always seemed ready with another refill of that great German Riesling wine! The piano player in the evenings was also great; in fact, he was the best of the three pianists on our three cruises. The ship was very clean and our room was cleaned very day. The food choices were interesting and the wine and beer choices excellent. Read Less

Took the Viking Gullveig with friends. Loved the ports with local and informed tour guides. The Captain was outstanding, greeting the guests every time we boarded or left the ship. We were greeted at the airport, taken to the ship and taken care of like family. We were taken to the airport on our last day and were escorted through the airport to assure we got home safely. Bartenders knew our name and drink on the first day and were great! Servers went out of their way to be helpful and courtious: one example: we wee having coffee on the third deck where continental breakfast was served. As we were approaching a lock I sad to my wife" I would love to see this lock, but we need to go to the dining room for breakfast". This was overheard by a server at the continental buffet and asked what would you like from the dining room? We told her and she gracefully went to the dining room and brought breakfast to us.......OVER and ABOVE service. Can't say enough other than ...can't wait for our next Viking Cruise!! Read Less

We (6 Persons) booked this cruise 8-9 months before we actually left. It was a partial Christmas market and We went to Rothenberg for 2 days before then Nuremberg for 3 days before we got on the cruise. Everything went extremely smoothly and the trip for the 6 of us was fun relaxing and busy. The cabins are smaller then on a cruise ship but we new what to expect and plenty of room for us. The heated floor in the bathroom is a plus in cold weather. the service was impeccable and everyone was helpful and knowledgeable. Pan (Panayot Tsvetkov) really helped us with our wines to make sure we had what we liked. With 6 women that was no small feat. The bar staff and wait staff knew what we wanted even before we did on some days. The entertainment and activities were fun and enjoyable. The food was extremely tasteful. Overall I could not find anything to criticize. Read Less

River cruising is much more of a relaxed time than cruising on the huge ocean ships. It's easy to navigate the boat and it takes a fraction of the time to get around on the boat. The trade-off is that there is no pool, gym, auditorium, specialty dining rooms, huge buffet, and fewer items to choose from on the menus. All ports were equally good. All tour guides were natives who spoke English well and were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their cities. Viking included a couple of good surprise additions, a walking tour on embarkation day and a wreath and gingerbread making demonstration in Passau. The food in the dining room was always excellent. Plus there was food at a couple of the afternoon activities. And morning pastries followed by cookies at the beverage stations were popular. Viking takes care of you well from the time you get your luggage at the airport on the first day to leading you to your airport check-in on the last day. As for airports, remember that in Europe you may have to walk outdoors to take a bus to your gate or walk outdoors from your gate to or from the plane. This tour is highly recommended for almost anyone. Read Less

Overall, I had a very nice experience on the Viking Gullveig for the Romantic Danube cruise in November 2017. There were some really wonderful parts of the cruise and some areas that need improvement. At the outset, the booking process was pretty straight forward. We worked directly with Viking to book our room. The representative was very knowledgeable and responsive to questions. Arranging our flights, however, was much more complicated. We chose to do a stopover in Nuremburg before flying on to London and then home to the U.S. It took many, many phone calls, too many e-mails to count, and countless hours on the phone with Viking's air representatives to arrange the flights. The problem was that Viking had limited contract seats available during the time of our travel (and, apparently, at all times). This made the flight booking process frustrating. In addition, we later learned (and only because I constantly watched my reservations on Delta's website) that our connections changed, leaving an inadequate connection time (30 minutes). No one from Viking called to inform us. I had to spend hours on the phone directly with Delta completely re-booking the itinerary. We booked an Explorer Suite room, which was supposed to include complimentary private transfers to the ship. However, since we arrived the afternoon before the cruise departed, we were told after booking that the private transfers would not apply. Upon our arrival at the airport, we were surprised to see Viking representatives at the airport picking up other guests. This was disappointing. Upon our arrival at the ship (again, which we had to arrange ourselves), we were immediately greeted by the ship's General Manager and escorted to our room. He gave us an overview of the amenities in the room and assisted us with getting our luggage situated. He was very welcoming and we appreciated his assistance. On embarkation date, a light lunch is provided in the Aquavit Lounge. There are pastry stands located outside the lounge, offering pastries, cookies, coffee, and tea 24/7. Unless you are in an Explorer Suite, these are the only beverage options offered 24/7. We found the refrigerator in the Explorer Suite was always stocked with beverages and housekeeping would replenish it with items we requested. The dining facilities on board are cozy and inviting. The tables seat 6-8 guests in an "open seating" format. Reservations or holds are not accepted for any table. We always found interesting guests to dine with. However, there would often be a line waiting to get into the dining room for people to get tables in preferred areas or in the section of a particular staff member. The food was really wonderful. The Chef did an excellent job providing a wide-variety of options. And even more impressive was the fact that he coordinated so many meals of high quality out of an extremely small kitchen. During the galley tour on the last night, I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the space and the chef staff's ability to utilize the space so effectively. Hats off to the Chef and staff! The service was really great. Within a day, most of the staff knew either my name or room number. They were welcoming and accommodating. They assisted with most any request in a timely fashion. Housekeeping staff were very attentive as well. The room was always clean and comfortable. The comfort of the room, though, was greatly diminished by the noise generated by the engine room. Both Explorer Suites are located at the aft of the ship, directly above the engine room. Anytime the ship is moving, there is a significant amount of noise and vibration in the room, to the extent that glasses and objects on the tables will rattle. It was so bad one night we actually called the front desk and engineering came to check the room. We were told it was the standard noise for that room. For the price of these suites, the noise level was really unacceptable. We spoke with other passengers on the same floor in different rooms and learned that it was isolated to the two Explorer Suites. The cruise includes a number of complimentary tours and a variety of optional tours. We found most of the included tours to be really exceptional. In particular, Viktoria in Budpest is exceptional. Her knowledge of her hometown and ability to convey the information in an interesting, witty, informative manner was superb. The tour guides in Passau were also wonderful. We found the tours in Vienna and Nuremburg to be a bit lacking. Both tours were mainly via coach, leaving little opportunity to go in and really see things or explore. The view was from the window of a coach bus. The tour guides on these excursions were also less enthusiastic than others. Be ready for early mornings on this itinerary! Most tours start around 8:30 a.m., with the latest around 9:15 a.m. The tour on the last day in Nuremburg is in the afternoon, but only because the ship gets to port late. The cities visited on this itinerary are fantastic and highly recommended. They are each beautiful and unique. I would cruise this itinerary again and again and see something different every time. The most beautiful stretch of the cruise is from Krems to Passau. The countryside is gorgeous and the cruise director provides commentary about the sights as you cruise. Get to the Aquavit Terrace and/or Lounge early to get a prime seat by the riverside windows! You won't be disappointed! The amount of time in each port greatly varies. Do not plan on being in each city for a full day and do not make any outside plans until you know exactly what the ship's schedule will be. For example, we expected to spend two full days in Budapest--the day we embarked the ship and the following day. However, in reality, the ship is only in Budapest for about 24 hours. Guests arrive around noon and the ship sails before noon the next day. The Budapest tour begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes around noon. However, the ship sails as soon as the tour begins. Guests are then bused by coach to the ship's location, about an hour outside of Budapest. This was very disappointing, as there were many things on our list to visit in Budapest (and other cities) that we could not, given this unexpected itinerary change (which you don't find out until you're on board). Budapest is one example; this happens often. You will also spend a lot of time on a coach bus during the river cruise. The day before disembarking is a bit chaotic. The staff are all working hard to get ready to flip the ship, as guests for the next cruise start arriving as soon as you disembark. It is stressed repeatedly that guests must be out of their rooms at the scheduled times. You can sense the vibe of the ship change on this day. If you have laundry requests, they must be given to housekeeping at least 24 hours prior to disembarking (this is not written anywhere). Lastly, we were surprised to learn the day before disembarking that we must be out of the room by 9 a.m. and our luggage must be outside our room for pickup by 8:00 a.m. Prior to booking, and again before our trip, we were told by Viking Representatives that check-out was Noon. We made connecting travel plans based upon those representations, only to be told the day before disembarking that we must be out of the room by 9 a.m. Guests must also settle accounts by 8:30 a.m. that day, even if they stay on the ship past that time. This must be done in person; they do not maintain payment information from booking. Lastly, I must add that this cruise and itinerary will be difficult for anyone with a disability or injury. My mother had an unfortunate injury and sprained her ankle while on our trip, thus this last bit of information. If you have an accident and sustain an injury, the ship does have a wheelchair and cane available to use onboard. The rooms are not designed for wheelchair use, though. They're simply not large enough, not even the explorer suite. A wheelchair has to be folded up to go into the rooms. The tours are difficult for anyone in a wheelchair or with a significant disability. There is a lot of walking involved on cobblestone streets. The least I walked one day was around 4 miles, the most 6.5-7 miles. Most of the cities are very hilly. On days that you must take a coach back to the ship, the coach is often parked a long distance away. In short, it can be very physically demanding if you want to take advantage of what is included in the package you purchased. Also, as we unfortunately experienced, the optionally purchased medical insurance was impossible to utilize. The amount of paperwork the insurance company required was voluminous and the doctors my mother saw refused to complete it, even when requested directly by the insurance company. In addition, we were not accompanied to the hospital by a Viking representative fluent in German (we were in Vienna at the time), as the brochures state would happen. Lastly, the ship will not reserve any dining tables or seats towards the front of coaches for people with a disability or injury. Everything is first come, first serve. I also expected (but did not receive) a follow-up from Viking...even by e-mail...after the trip. While I would take this cruise again, I would go armed with more information about how the cruise works, the length of time in each port, and what happens in the event a trip to the hospital is needed. I would also not book an Explorer Suite, but would choose a Veranda Suite on the upper floor. The space in the Veranda Suites is comparable. The bathrooms are the same size and the layout is much better. The only things missing in the Veranda Suites are the wraparound balconies....and, the noise. Read Less

We chose this cruise as I always wanted to go on a river cruise. I did my research & knew about rivers being too high or too low, about be tied up to another boat etc. so I was prepared for the unexpected. We were going in November so I knew it would be rainy, cold & grey but we got a good price. We flew thru Viking but elected to pay an extra $50 each so that we could pick our flights. We were so happy to have done this as our times were reasonable. Others on board had to be up and out by 3:30am for their departing flights. We took the 3 night pre-cruise package in Prague. We were met at airport & reached the hotel (Sheraton) by 10:30am. We met with Viking rep. who was excellent. Our rooms were ready which was great due to jet lag. With the help of the Viking rep. we found an ATM and got Czech currency. Please note, you need to pay for public bathroom in Prague and most of Europe. The next day, we had a 5 hour bus/walking tour of Prague which I enjoyed. The next day, we had free time to explore Prague. The hotel was excellent, with full buffet breakfast that was very good. Viking Rep was available 7:00am -7:00pm. Departing Prague for Nurermberg, we were bused and it took about 4 hours. Arrived on the ship at 4:00pm. They had a welcome reception with wine tasting. We elected to take the drink package as it was 300 euros per cabin. No added gratuities. It was a good deal as the wine and beer offered during lunch and dinner was not very extensive. For example, they didn't offer a Chardonnay or Riesling. Food on board was excellent. No complaints. Service was fair. There is no assigned seating. They call it open seating which means you sit with others. The problem is everyone goes to meals at the same time. At breakfast, the tables were not cleared off and if you were late you had to search for a clean seat. The breakfast & lunch were buffets but you could order off the menu. We didn't know this for serveral days. No one informed us. I had to ask for more water repeatedly, other items such a coffee cup, napkin. These are small things but all the reviews I read said the service was excellent so this shouldn't happen. I thought service on major cruise lines better. We enjoyed sharing tables and met wonderful, interesting people. We had a balcony room on the 3rd level. The room and bathroom were small but adequate. Due to the weather we didn't use the balcony but it was great to have the large window for light. In Budapest, we were tied up next to another Viking boat so the view was another stateroom. Most of the ports, you had to be bused to a location to take the tour. I felt that everything was too structured and regimented. Some tour guides talked and talked and overwhelmed you with facts. In Nuremberg, we took the optional WWII tour and enjoyed it. In Vienna, we took the evening Mozart concert tour and it was good but not what I expected, It was held in a room with regular straight chairs with everyone squeezed together. If you are a serious classical concert going, it is not for you. The cruising from Passeau to Vienna was beautiful. This is what you see in their advertisements. Other than that it felt like a escorted land tour. Up at this time, eat breakfast, on the bus, walking tour and then onto the next port. Everyone I spoke to loved the cruise but me. I don't think I will take another one. If you don't like escorted land tours, I don't think you would like a river cruise. Read Less

The crew and staff were so helpful and friendly and our program director, Lisette, did a wonderful job of keeping us informed and entertained. The wait staff and housekeeping were efficient, personable and fun. The drivers who took us to our various excursions were very competent and skilled on some narrow roads and byways. I loved the food that was always tasty, well-prepared and quickly served.....but we were never rushed! We were traveling with friends we met on our first Viking cruise, two years ago. We became fast friends and since we live so far apart (we're in New Jersey and they are in Oklahoma) we thought that we ought to take another cruise together, so we did and it was wonderful! I look forward to my next trip with Viking......don't know where or when but it will be one day. Read Less

I had a lot of experience with Ocean Cruise ships, both work and pleasure, but had never been on a River Cruise. I thought the price seemed high, but when I left the Ship, my EXTRA-charges were under $100, compared to $2-3000 on some ocean cruises. When Viking says, All inclusive, they really mean it! We paid for some laundry, one extra excursion, and two cocktails. The daily excursions, great wine and beer during meals, and other things are included. You can even take local wine and liquor purchases aboard and they will serve them for you, if you like. The staff was fantastic. They quickly remembered our names and what we liked with our meals. Speaking of meals, as much as I liked Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, I must say that the meals on this cruise were as good, and many times better. Presentation was better than anything I have seen. Because there are only 180 passengers on board, the service is fast and efficient. The include wine flows freely, and the wine was fantastic, bottled by a small Austrian Winery, just for Viking. The entire staff, including the Captain, mingled with the passengers, answered questions, and it was not unusual for the Captain to ask if he could eat breakfast or lunch at one of the passenger tables. Several times during our trip they had local entertainers onboard, and a great pianist was with us the entire trip. Good lectures were also provided each day about the area and upcoming events. The scenery in Germany and Austria was amazing, and seeing it from the ship is the only way to see it. We went through 25 river Lockages during the trip and they are great to witness, whether you are technical or if you never saw a Lock before. Do yourself a favor and try a Viking River Cruise. I chose this cruise by the suggestion of my travel agent. We ended up having fourteen of us. This cruise was absolutely wonderful. We started at Budapest which was our embarkation with no issues, from there we went to Austria and our cruise ended in Germany with our disembarkation also no issues. I took every tour that Viking had included and two of the optional tours. The tours were amazing and speaking for myself we had the BEST tour guides. So much history with each tour. Budapest we went to the Fisherman’s Bastion. Also seeing the Parliament Building lit up at night was beautiful. In Vienna it was wonderful and entertaining to listen to the Vienna Residence Orchestra play Mozart and Strauss for us. In Krems, Austria we toured the Gottweig Abbey which we had Father Pius as our tour guide, which I thought we had the best guide. Passau, Germany had the opportunity to attend an organ concert. Regensburg, Germany the tour was wonderful and then it was onto some great shopping. Nuremberg, Germany was our last stop. On our own in the morning which I purchased some gingerbread to take back home. The tour in the afternoon included seeing where the Nuremberg Trials were held and a building that Hitler owned and held his rallies. The Viking Gullveig was very nice. Our cabin was nice and had a great staff person taking care of our room. The crew and staff we met during our meals were so nice and accommodating. We also had a wonderful program director Debbie. The food was excellent. No complaints here. I can’t wait to go again. Will be planning for the Christmas Markets in 2019. Thanks Viking for the best time/cruise ever. Read Less

My husband and I love cruises but we wanted something a little different than the usual island hopping. Friends of ours had recommended Viking and we decided the time had come for us to give it a try. We arrived on the Budapest after over twelve hours of traveling. We were tired from our trip and ready to collapse. The Viking staff picked us up at the airport and got us to the Gullveig with a minimum of fuss. Once aboard, we were told to expect our room to be ready by 1pm. Jaded travelers that we are we thought we'd actually be allowed in at 3 but the staff was as good as their word, at 1pm we were in the door able to finally relax. That was the first of many promises kept over the course of the week. When the Maitre'D Panayot found out I was a diabetic, he gave me a card with the number "5" on it. For the rest of the cruise, every time I sat down to eat, I'd just put the card on the table and Panayot would come and personally make sure my dietary needs were met. He kept entrees from being seasoned with sauces that might not be good for me and made sure desserts like fresh fruit with whipped cream were there for me every day. Other aspects of the service were equally excellent. Each day, the Captain was there to personally greet the guests as they returned aboard ship. When we wanted to see parts of Prague that were not covered on the normal tour. The tour director was able to make special arrangements and find a guide and transportation for us. The food was exquisite and the waiters and waitress were friendly and professional. The small size of the ship made the experience intimate and friendly. By the end of the cruise we knew almost everyone aboard. Then there was sailing up the Danube watching the lovely countryside glide by us as we made our way leisurely up river. We would get off the ship and go on beautifully orchestrated tours that had the memory cards of our cameras filled and the soles of our shoes noticeably thinner. Exhausting at times but well worth every minute! As I've said before, my husband and I are the veteran of many cruises but this was by far the best. We can't wait to do this again! Read Less

We also stopped in big cities, Nuremberg, Vienna and Budapest. In those cities we found incredible museums and history to explore. Each day we participated in the included tours, led by English speaking local guides who love their cities and loved showing it off to us. Twice we also signed up for optional tours. A concert in Vienna was superb, far exceeded our expectations. The balance between tours and free time to explore on our own was just right for us. The food on the boat is incredible. We had never done a tourist cruise and had heard good things about Viking, so we decided to give it a try. It fit in with our usual trip to Germany, but the cruise took us to places where we had never been. All the tours were very enjoyable. The guides were well informed, spoke excellent English and were excellent companions for the tourists. We particularly enjoyed the tours of Passau, the Jewish quarter in Budapest, and the Benedictine abbey near Gottweig. The hospitality aboard the ship was superb. Couple that with very food, delicious Austrian wines and pleasant dining with other passengers and you have a recipe for a very enjoyable holiday. The one thing about dinners that we felt could have been better was to have more dishes typical of the locales that we visited, but such was available during the tours. Our room on the ship was small---in the lowest priced category---but comfortable, and we wouldn't have spent more time in a more luxurious room because there were plenty of things to do on board the ship, such as the cabaret. I'll conclude my praise by saying that we are seriously considering a Viking ocean cruise along the Norwegian coast to the Arctic and on to the British Isles. Read Less

My husband and I had never been on any kind of cruise so we decided to start with a river cruise. Since we have never been on a cruise before, we don't have anything to compare it to but we enjoyed this cruise very much. We were taken care of from the minute we stepped off our plane in Nuremberg until we got on our plane in Budapest at the end of the cruise. We were very pleasantly surprised at how clean and comfortable the buses were. The crew on the Gullveig and the tour guides on the excursions were amazing! I've read some complaints about the food, but we loved it. Hey, you can't please everybody. We were very lucky that we had good weather and the water levels were good so that we were able to see all the sights from our boat that were advertised. We knew going in that these things are out of the control of Viking and I have no doubt that Viking would have taken good care of us had we not been so lucky. We did not have the most expensive cabin but it more than met our needs as we only used it to sleep and shower. We never heard a sound from another room or outside our door. This trip was amazing and we will definitely be taking other Viking cruises in the future. As a side note...I only rated the entertainment and fitness and recreation as average because we didn't take advantage of these. We were too pooped from the excursions and jet lag. Also, this is a very good value for your money. We wondered how Viking even made any money off us! Read Less

We love ocean cruising and decided to give river cruising a try. Our cruise was excellent! Viking provided an experience that matched their lovely commercials. We were blessed with amazing, although very hot weather as Europe has been setting heat records. We experienced NONE of the issues related to negative reviews we see posted. The river was flowing and stable even tho we were told it could change within hours. The captain was very personable and readily available for conversation, even sitting down at tables to visit and toast with celebratory champagne. Debra was our program director and she was also EXCELLENT - full of energy and enthusiasm that made one think it was her first tour group :) All of the the staff was excellent, and a shout out also to Yves in the dining room who went beyond to please and filled us with his happy spirit. Budapest was beautiful, and all of the ports were lovely. We did the Prague extension that we also really enjoyed. We made new friends and shared good times. Food choices were plentiful and shore excursions were a great way to introduce one to the port city so that one could navigate it successfully with the free time provided. Kudos to Viking. Read Less

This was our third Viking cruise and we've signed on for a fourth in 2018. We fine the balance between water travel and shore visiting much better than ocean cruises. We like the small ships and the congeniality on board at meals and in the evening. While we encountered low river depth on one of our previous cruises, Viking covered it gracefully and we never really noticed the issue. We did notice on the Danube that there was more tourist river boats so ports were more crowded and we were tied next to other Viking ships from time to time - (but we're boaters and used to do that all the time!). Food was delicious and the staff accommodated our needs to be a bit isolated in the dining room due to my wife's serious seafood allergy. The wine service was suitable and the evening entertainment was fun - one evening's music contest really got my wife into the dancing! Read Less

After careful consideration of many options for our annual vacation we have decided to book a river cruise . On February 24th, 2017 we called to book a Viking River Cruise. Having a number of physical limitation ( hip and knee problems as well as rheumatoid arthritis) we were very careful in choosing excursions and activities. After spending close to $9,000.00 plus another $2,500.00 in additional upgrades and expenses we were ready to be pampered and entertained by beautiful scenery to be enjoyed from our veranda on the 3rd deck as we sail thru Europe. Exactly 24 hours before our trip we received an e-mail from Viking to let us know that the Danube water levels were low and instead of embarkation in Nuremberg it will happen in Regensburg, about 70 miles southeast of Nuremberg. We were to meet at a welcome center, have lunch and be transported to Regensburg by a motorcoach. Because of our physical limitations I was concerned with traveling on a bus after long flight. I called Viking to find out if this was the only change in itinerary or was there possibility of extended bus travel. I was told by their customer service person that he did not have any additional information. We were considering canceling the trip because of the fear of extensive bus travel thru Europe instead of comfort of the ship travel. Travel agent told me at the time of my call that we will be staying at the Le Meridien Grand Hotel for the night and leave for Regensburg the next morning. The next day, June 23rd, 2017, while already at the Miami Airport we have received second e-mail from Viking informing us that the embarkation will take place in Passau which is 140 miles from Nuremberg. The shore excursions will operate by motor coach from Passau. My fears were mounding. Our total travel time to Nuremberg from Miami was 19 hours There was no welcome center in the hotel. There was no lunch. We were not staying at the Le Meridien Grand Hotel overnight. We were herded to the bus and driven for about 3 hours to Passau. No food or bathroom stops. We arrived at the ship that was docked outside of town at what it looked like waste management facility. Please, see the pictures of our view attached at the end of this e-mail. We had dinner, which I hardly remember because I was too exhausted from travel . That took care of the first day of this "lavish" vacation. The next morning, around 8am, ( 2am Miami time ) the loud speakers exploded with sound of a women's voice telling us to report at the desk for our 2-3 hour bus trip back to Nuremberg. Really? My body was still hurting from the day before. We could not endure a total of about 6 hours on the bus again. We did not go. Instead, I got showered and dressed and decided to have a nice breakfast. Only to find out that the staff was closing the restaurant at 9:30am so my only option were some slices of over processed ham, dried up cheese and stale bread, called a "continental" breakfast. After making a scene and getting a manager involved I was given a plate of cold eggs and bacon. We stayed on the ship. We could not experience Nuremberg. A total loss of 2 days of our European exploration. After dinner, on Sunday the Program Director, announced that the next day everyone must leave on the bus for Regensburg shortly after 8am. We did not plan on an early excursion. We planned and paid for a Weltenburg Abbey & The Danube Narrows trip that was scheduled for 2pm. I asked about that and I my question was abruptly dismissed in front of all guests. I was told that we must get on the bus in the morning if we want to go on our chosen excursion. We were disappointed but did not want to lose attractions of the third day in a row. The next morning, Monday, I approached Program Director in front of the bus full of guests. As I started asking her a question she looked at me and said " I have no time for your nonsense ". Than she opened her hand, put it on my back and pushed me into the door of that bus!!! I felt violated, embarrassed, manhandled and totally disrespected! Not wanting to make a scene and ruin everybody else trip, I went on the bus. After we came back I complained about the incident with Program Director to the hotel Manager. The next day Manager asked me if I would accept an apology from Program Director and let the whole thing go. I told him that I would accept apology for the words, but, because of her pushing me I will make an official complaint to Travel Agency and Viking. No one deserves to be treated like that. Two days later Program Director approached me and asked if I would accept her apology and I told her the same thing. This was supposed to be a luxurious trip that would allow us to rest, relax and enjoy the scenery and amenities. About the scenery. We were docked at that waste management place for 4 days of our 7 day trip. Totally not what we paid for. Totally not acceptable. Just, please, take a look at the pictures. They represent the view from the Aquavit Terrace and from our stateroom. The restaurant windows were about one foot from a concrete wall.We may as well have been eating in the basement. I did not need the binoculars that Viking advertising suggested I bring. I am upset with this whole bad experience. We have only so many vacations that we can take and enjoy. This was a waste of time, opportunity and a lot of hard earned money. Read Less

We chose this cruise of the Danube based on an outstanding experience with Viking in China. Unfortunately, our experience would not be duplicated. We were disappointed that "Mother Nature" did not cooperate and the water levels were low and so our itinerary was altered significantly. This resulted in many long bus rides, certainly not what we were expecting. In addition, our itinerary had to change to accomodate an international air show and we did not get to "cruise" the Danube!! In all of the 8 days scheduled on our cruise, 4 proceeded as expected. However, it was the unprofessionalism and poor and incorrect communications from Viking, both corporate and the ship's management, that resulted in a terrible experience and is the basis for this rating. The company was either unaware or unwilling to correctly notify us of where we would be embarking. We spent 2 plus days of our pre cruise vacation trying to find out where we were picking up the cruise. Once on the cruise, there were issues with noise above the cabin which the ship's management could not or would not address. Is Viking so big that they do not care how they are perceived by their customers? There was no effort on the part of the Company to provide any additional service or acknowledgement of a difficult and unfortunate situation. They could have bought the passengers a drink! On a positive note, the general staff of the ship was outstanding. They couldn't do enough! Read Less

This cruise was a birthday gift and anniversary celebration in one, from my wife. We arrived a day early in Nuernberg to meet family and got to see the old city. I am glad we did, because, the river was low and the boat could not travel up to Nuernberg; it was berthed at Passau. Of course, Viking has no control over this. They do mention in their advertising "small print" that this can happen; they just don't tell you that it happens quite frequently - see other reviews on here. Because customers had booked excursions in Nuernberg and Regensburg, Viking had an obligation to fulfill these, so they bussed the passengers from Passau back to these cities. In the case of Nuernberg that is a five hour round trip bus ride; and that after many have flown in from the US east and west coast the day before. Then there was the double and triple berthing of the boats in port. Again, in the "small print" they warn you this may occasionally be necessary. It seems that in every port it is necessary. So, if you have paid additional as we did for a balcony, you can forget about using it; you will only be staring into someone else's cabin or a concrete wall at the Passau recycling depot. The food was okay. I have had better on larger cruise ships. The cabin was adequate and better than I have had on cruise ships. Don't expect too much in way of internet connection if that is important to you. The crew, from Captain on down to the galley boy, was exceptional. They needed to be to make up for the other shortcomings. When we returned home, I wrote to Viking and told them my grievances. I felt we should be compensated for the things we had paid for but never received; such as, the cruise from Nuernberg to Regensburg and then on to Passau; such as the balcony for which we had paid additional. After all, if I hand over my hard earned money for these things and am not given them, surely the seller has an obligation to refund the value of those items. On returning home, we each received a voucher towards a future cruise. Very nice if we were to undertake another cruise, but my wife and I are in our 70's and for reasons of health, we may not be able to take another cruise. I needed to talk to the Viking office. I finally reached the Viking corporate office and spoke to a representative. His attitude was "well we are sorry, but that is all that Viking is willing to offer you". Of all the things that concerned me about this trip, the "take it or leave it" attitude of this representative I found the most disturbing. Viking is absolutely the company that knows how to sell their product. Unfortunately, the product is not of the standard they would have you believe. I would not recommend a Viking river cruise to anyone. I have already spoken to two sets of friends who were planning on a Viking cruise. They have switched to another cruise line. Perhaps Viking could learn something from this and improve their customer service. Read Less

We chose this Viking River Cruise after watching ads and hearing from people how wonderful Viking is. We were supposed to leave from Nuremberg but unfortunately the Danube River was too low for the ship to come into port there. So we met at a hotel and were bused 2 1/2 hours south to a little north of Passau which would have been on our 3 day. Instead of putting people up at a local hotel in Nuremberg who had paid for tours on Sunday the day we were supposed to be there, they bused everyone 2 1/2 hours to the ship and then on Sunday they bused everyone who wanted to back to Nuremberg another 2 1/2 hours and then again back to the ship for another 2 1/2 hour bus ride. They parked the ship next to a concrete wall on our side which we had a balcony on! Paid extra to have a balcony but now we faced a concrete wall for 3 days! When we finally said late Tuesday for 5 minutes into the port at Passau they docked and within 5 minutes of docking another ship pulled right up next to us and we were looking into another state room on another boat so instead of enjoying our balcony we had to close the curtains and not even have daylight in our room! That was the way it was the entire time of our cruise which was only from a Sunday to a Saturday. When I called Viking upon return I was told that we went in the busy season and therefore it had to be expected! Expected to pay $800 extra for a balcony that we couldn't use! There was no action to try and make it up to passengers for the inconvenience. The food was good and so was the service, but making us feel important or that anyone cared that we missed out on 3 days of our vacation NO! All Viking was willing to do was give us a credit towards another cruise and we will NEVER NEVER take a Viking cruise. Read Less

This was our first river cruise. We had heard good things about Viking from friends who took a similar cruise last year. Although the Danube water level was too low to make the last leg of the trip, Viking made every effort to ensure (and succeeded) in taking us to all the scheduled tours. The ship's crew were unfailingly polite and professional, the meals were beautifully prepared and presented, and the room (Veranda) was very comfortable. The several walking tours were informative and the wireless headphones we were given made listening to the guide comfortable and effortless. Although the brochure stated that Viking could not be responsible for a low water level impeding the ship's progress to the last port on the tour, Viking still sent us a check for 25% of the tour price because of the inconvenience. We look forward to taking another river cruise in 2018 and Viking will be our first choice. Read Less
