We took the Lyon/Provence river cruise, with the 3-day post-extension in Nice. From the very beginning, this was a marvelous experience. We did get a chance to explore some of Lyon after checking in at the Viking Buri and unpacking. As was the case in our Grand European cruise in October, 2015, embarkation and disembarkation were as smooth as one could expect. The Viking staff is extremely helpful and courteous; they helped us get settled on day 1 and were there every step of the way through the end of the cruise. Our ship's tour director, Mia, was more than perfect for the job. She took a deep interest in everyone on the ship and was very congenial as well as helpful and well-organized. And her staff was amazing as well! The ship and our cabin were immaculate; the staff worked very hard to make this an almost fairy-tale experience --- we felt like we were a king and a queen! The cabin (we had a French balcony) was well laid out and very roomy and comfy. The food was unbelievably good! The chef met with us each evening before dinner to explain our choices and to make his recommendations, all of which were perfect! The wait staff was very attentive and knew our wine preferences by the second day. All the entertainment and activities on the cruise were well planned, and helped us to make decisions about what we might do in our spare time the next day. There were also great local cultural experiences --- musicians, artisans, singers. Each port provided us with at least one included shore excursion and several other choices after the included excursions --- additional cultural things to experience, local foods to try, and many hidden treasures. As I said earlier, the staff on the ship, top to bottom, went out of their way to make this an unforgettable, top-notch experience! Cabins were cleaned so often that I could not have found a speck of dirt or lint if I had tried. It was almost an "anything you want, I'll get it for you" atmosphere --- I almost felt guilty if I did something for myself. We were so pampered by the staff that we didn't want to go home to have to take care of ourselves!!! There were no children on our cruise; probably the average age of the people on the cruise was about mid-60's. We met many very nice people with whom we have maintained contact, both from the cruise in 2015 and in 2016. We are definitely going to go with Viking again; they seem to be the standard bearers in the industry! Read Less

Survey tour of southern France Traveling without repacking each day meant more time to relax and enjoy. Living on a hotel that is at the center of each city makes for the best experience. The crew was attentive and good humored. Did it rain? I suppose it did but we hardly noticed exploring the shops, cathedrals, and sights. Our red umbrellas kept us together and more than once allowed us to regroup with our tour. Dining with an excellent chef cooking with local ingredients but also enjoying restaurants ashore made for a gastronomic delight. Pairings of local wines made the meals. Dining with a variety of couples introduced us to our intelligent and learned shipmates. The most comfortable way to tour the Rhone ease and learn about the history and current life in southern France. You must do this once but be warned that you will come back again and again. Read Less

We chose this cruise to be with friends. It was also a birthday cruise for 2 of our group. The wait staff sang happy birthday to them on our last night. That was very sweet. We wanted a smaller crowd. It was wonderful! We has taken a cruise on a big ship the year before, and felt lost on such a large ship! We enjoyed meeting other people. We enjoyed sitting in the lounge in the afternoon after the excursions and watching the river flow by. It was beautiful! All service staff were very polite and accommodating. The food was incredible! Every meal was delicious! By the second day the bat tenders knew us and knew what drinks we preferred. The entertainment at night was a lot of fun, not too involved, just enough time to relax after dinner before going to bed. The excursions were very informative and just enough to give us the background for what we were to experience. The countryside was breathtaking! The cities were so historic! We are planning our next trip with friends soon! Read Less

This cruise was a great disappointment. We only sailed 3 out of 7 days! The first delay was because of river conditions. No other explanation. We were bused to see the sites. The next delay was because the lock operators were on strike. Not Vikings fault and it only meant a delay of 3-4 hours. The next delay was amazing. Many passengers had gone on an excursion. We were to meet them downriver at our next destination. I thought the boat was going very fast. Some of the passengers were watching out the window and saw the boat go straight into the bank! One passenger was knocked off her feet, but luckily was not hurt. The bow was covered in broken trees. The glass around the bow was broken. The captain was able to get the boat off the bank after 20" of going back and forth in reverse. We went back to Avignon to be inspected by a team from Basil. There we stayed. This accident was referred to as "the incident". Our compensation for this was free drinks before and after dinner. Also..the captain was there to say goodbye the next day! Read Less

This was a cruise tour and our first. Three days in France and two in Dijon. The land part was excellent, with great guides and tour director. The Paris hotel was good and Dijon ok. I cannot say enough about the staff on the Buri. I know that they work long hours for low wages, but they were exceptional. The chef was a wonderful man and we discussed many recipes. For reasons that we were never told, the ship ran aground while sailing. There were only about 20 passengers on board and the staff handled everything professionally. The internet however was atrocious. Viking needs to spend money to upgrade. We were bused once because the water level was low. They acted as if it was a rare occurrence, but it's known that this is a regular thing. They just don't bother telling you. For the price we paid, the rooms were very small. We also spent more time docked than cruising. Our suite was on the water side, otherwise we couldn't have opened our curtains or sit in the verandah. This was a Burgundy and Provence wine cruise. The included wineries chosen were mediocre and not enough. The better winery was optional, with a price tag. Including tips would be beneficial as there was a great discrepancy in everyone's dollar amounts. Viking doesn't give enough of a bang for the money it charges and we won't be taking another cruise, unless corporate makes changes. I would like to reiterate that all the staff is excellent. We chose this cruise because we had never been to France on river cruise. This trip was in our top three favorite vacations of all time. Viking Cruises, in our opinion, is the best way to travel abroad and get the most bang for your buck. The Cruise personal are second to none. They seem to make it their mission to get to know every passenger and try to meet all of their needs. The boat, in our second experience, only holds 190 passengers so we get to meet lots of fun and interesting individuals. We have made lasting friends on both of our cruises. We are in the process of planning our third cruise with a couple we met on our most recent cruise. All of the cruise personnel are professional, kind, friendly and very helpful in every way. They sincerely care that you have the best experience possible on their cruises. The food and service and service personnel are second to none. Everyone needs to experience a Viking Cruise. Every aspect of the trip was outstanding and seamless. We elected to spend a week in Nice before taking a train to join the boat in Avignon. Once on the boat, we unpacked our bags for the duration of the trip. What a treat to travel without re packing and lugging luggage! Our cabin (Veranda A) was compact, but, very efficiently designed and comfortable. From our very first encounter to our departure, every interaction with the Viking crew was wonderful. The daily complimentary tours were informative and managed in a way that prevented you from feeling "herded". Each night there was an update of the next days activities prior to dinner. Oh and the food, where to begin....great quality and quantity. We alternated between the Dining room and the more casual Aquavit terrace. As I look back on a great experience, the most memorable part of the trip was the wonderful people that we met and the friends that we made. We are already planning our next Viking Cruise. Read Less

Viking arranged for a high speed train to take us to Lyon where boarding the ship was a breeze. The staff was very accommodating and the food was excellently prepared and delicious. We sailed that night and each day was at a different city/ town along the river. The guides were very knowledgeable and it was so easy to follow along with the head sets provided each person. The ship had entertainment at night that enhanced the experience. One night we took a tour of a town we were stopped at and went to the top of a hill to see the view by night. It was magical. Overall it was a wonderful and charming excursion that we would recommend to other cruisers. Read Less

From the first moment we pulled up in the taxi in front of the ship, until we were flying home, Viking covered every aspect of transportation, luggage, accommodations. We were always cared for by a Viking representative, whether on a tour, making train connections, traveling to hotels. From embarkation until we got the plane to go home, our luggage was handled by Viking. We never had to worry about transporting bags. They made our trip effortless. My daughter & I went on this cruise together. She did the research to learn about suitable cruises in our budget & time frames. Also, people she knew had taken Viking cruises & described & recommended this Rhone River Viking cruise. We enjoyed several of the shore excursions that included healthy hikes as well as the ship's entertainment & activities. Mia, the activities director, joined in many of the socializing times--dancing, etc.--& seemed like a new-found friend. All the tour guides, selected by Viking, were pleasant, knowledgeable, & accommodating for such extra things as finding an unplanned toilet facility. Food was good--(great duck & ever-flowing wines!)--& the servers & all the staff acted like personal friends. We especially enjoyed the piano performances of the pianist, Pedro. All service was excellent--no problems. A mixup regarding several passengers' luggage occurrred with the airline from Amsterdam. The Viking representative who met us at Marseille was very helpful about making the claim for our delayed luggage. It was found & delivered to our room by evening. This was typical of the friendly personal service of all the Viking employees. The room we shared was comfortable & ingeniously designed for maximum convenience of amenities. We enjoyed the friendliness of the small number of passengers (vs. large boat ocean cruises) & were also happy to find some new friends to keep in contact with. We found that friendships especially flourished when we spent time in the lounges. Our cruise did not have children. No one could possibly get seasick on the etxtremely smooth & quiet movement of the ship; if we didn't look out the windows, we didn't realize we were moving at all! Yes, we are looking forward to planning our next river cruise on a Viking boat next summer! Read Less

On board, the service was warm, inviting, and seemed personal. The bar staff remembered our orders and preferences after the very first night. The cruise director had a great sense of humor, was warm, and friendly. She seemed to be everywhere - on board and on the tours, in the towns. Although the cabin was tiny, it was well designed with a place for all of our luggage, etc. The food was excellent in taste and variety. We loved the entire Viking experience, starting with 3 days in Nice. However, I would say that hotel in Nice wasn't quite up to our expectations. All things considered the hotel sufficed, considering how much we loved Nice and touring the area, including a side trip to Monaco. We then took about a 4 hour bus ride to Avignon, along with many Viking cruise members, from Nice. Once we embarked on the ship the entire experience was simply fantastic. From our state room,to the crew,to the food, to the entertainment and the daily tours, everything was 5 Stars. We are currently looking at a Viking Russian Cruise for this coming fall. We loved our first experience with Viking and highly recommend cruising with them. By the way, the daily port of call tours were very informative, set up in small groups, with the headphones and having very knowledge, attentive and professional tour guides. The buses were extremely comfortable with bathroom facilities and easy access on and off the bus. Read Less

It was a nice extension to our 8 day Viking Cruise on the Rolfe through Northern France and ended in Paris with a connection by high speed train to Lyon for the next cruise on the Buri, touring the South of France. The excursions and guides were excellent and unique. The food was outstanding on both cruises as well as the wait staff. The Rolfe experience set the bar high with an excellent experience. where as the Buri's staff were not as engaging or friendly as if they were tired of dealing with their guests and gave very curt responses. When we returned to the ship after an excursion the staff on the Rolfe was always there with a treat and refreshing towels. Where on the Buri if you were not in the first tour groups there was no welcome only a staff member collecting your Excursion cards to make sure you had returned to the ship. We found it amazing that the captain could not speak any English when addressing the guests in the Cruise briefings. The Cruise Director was not organized especially in coordinating the Tours especially making sure all of the the Whisper Boxes were all working prior to the bus departures and had plenty of extras on hand prior to tour departures. This was our 6th river cruise with Viking. So, we have found them to provide excellent cruises. Because I have a particular interest in medieval European history, I chose this tour because it provided an opportunity to see the Abbey at Cluny and the Papal Palace at Avignon. (In addition to being huge, the Abbey exercised nearly as much influence in its time as Rome. The Papal Palace was the home of seven Popes during the so-called "Babylonian Captivity" of the Papacy.) My wife and I found the excursions to both locations to be well-conducted and interesting. The Abbey visit is the only added cost option we chose. The other shore excursions were much as expected with the exception of the Timeless Town of Perouges. Perouges felt too much like a tourist creation. As usual, the food aboard the ship was excellent and the staff attentive. Although Viking includes wine with meals, we opted for the premium wine package and feel this to have been money well-spent. (We're not "wine snobs", but we do enjoy both a better wine and a broader selection.) At the tour's conclusion, we chose to add a couple of nights in Avignon. It's a charming town and the Papal Palace was well-worth a second visit. If you choose to stay, check out the laser light show in the Palace courtyard. The later showing is offered with English narrative on some nights. It's impressive! So, why did I not award the Cruise 5 stars? Because, while uniformly excellent, I did not think it was truly exceptional. (My wife and I are admittedly spoiled and would give this rating only to our Viking Yangtze River cruise several years ago.) And, I admit being annoyed by Viking's payment policy requiring full payment long before the cruise in order to take advantage of their sale prices. Read Less

We selected this cruise because we wanted to see the south of France and this seemed like a nice way to accomplish that. Prior to this, we had not taken a river cruise and thought that this would be a memorable experience. It was! It was great to have Viking take care of the travel arrangements and transfers, making that part of our trip worry free. After arriving in Marseille, we were promptly met and delivered to the Buri in Avignon. In a very short time we were able to access our cabin. We selected a standard cabin and while it was small, it was nicely appointed with enough space to store our belongings. Having the in-room safe was a great feature and something that we used each day. The bathroom was adequate also and featured nice toiletries that were replenished as needed. Housekeeping did a very good job in the cabin each day. The cruise director on the Buri was quite personable and informative. She was able to answer any questions and always made herself available to help. She set an upbeat tone to the cruise and made the experience fun. In the ports of call, we found the tour guides to be excellent. They were most informative and entertaining. There was always plenty to eat onboard the vessel and the food was tasty. It was nice to have the option to order from the menu for lunch or to access the buffet. The wait staff was attentive and helpful if we had questions about the entrees etc. It is nice to be able to enjoy complimentary wine or soft drinks at lunch or dinner while onboard the Viking vessels. The included wi-fi service on-board was also a welcome addition to have. Overall, the cruise was memorable for all of the right reasons! Read Less

The room was comfortable, the food excellent, and staff commendable. I really enjoyed the excursions and appreciated the knowledgeable tour guides in each port. They all provided excellent historical and local information for each place visited. I also appreciated the relaxed ambiance of onboard life. Having traveled on a larger cruise line, I especially enjoyed the smaller more intimate setting of the Viking river cruise. Excursions I especially enjoyed were to Perouges, a middle town, a trip to a winery near Lyon, and Avignon. I was not disappointed with any of the excursions, and I appreciated that each day passengers had trips that were included in the cruise. Both embarkation and disembarkation were well managed. I was somewhat unhappy with a disembarkation time early in the morning, night really. However, the staff made the process as painless as possible and even had someone at the airport to assist us. I ended up on this my first river cruise by default. My cousin's friend was returning from New Zealand and it seemed too short a turn around to go on the cruise so she asked her to see if she could find someone to take her place. I was the lucky person and was not disappointed. It was my first but it will not be my last. The Buri staff was wonderful. I was so impressed by the food and the service. By the second sitting, even though there was open seating, staff knew preferences. I was impressed with the portion control and the organization of the kitchen under the direction of Executive Chef Dimitris Sidiropoulos. I was even more impressed after a tour he led of his kitchen and a subsequent trip to the market with him and the Programme Director Jean-Pierre Enguix. My family had a restaurant for 55 years so I certainly appreciate that part of the cruise very much. Everything from port and shore excursions and life on board was well done. We were well treated from the time of arrival at the airport until our departure. Unfortunately we were the first group off the boat and had to get a 6:30 a.m. flight from Lyon but we still had the opportunity to be offered a good breakfast. The organization of the departure was impressive but then the whole cruise was superbly organized. Jean Pierre was an excellent Programme Director and everywhere making sure we were well looked after. Top marks to all.
