Everything was performed with CH precision! Ship was immaculate and tours excellent throughout. Everything was flawless!! Food-excellent and ample. Viking post add-on to Paris performed perfectly. Airport transfers executed without problems. We enjoyed the lounge aboard ship and spent a good deal of time relaxing there. Viviers was a surprise and gave us a good appreciation of what it must have been like to live in France during the middle ages. We felt that we finally got to know Lyon and had enough free time there to fully explore the area. The only negative was the air transportation. We went comfort class but were disappointed in the stateside portion of the flight. We would have preferred a more direct flight. I was told (after the fact) that we could have worked with Viking to improve the flight selection. We will try doing that next time AND THERE WILL MOST DEFINATELY BE A NEXT TIME!!! Read Less

Dear friends asked if we'd like to join them on a Viking River Cruise. We had not been to Europe before and thought if ever now would be a great time with our friends who travel extensively. We were very pleased with Viking Buri shipand crew. They made us feel lke honored guest. The cabin we chose was a French Balcony with sliding door to the outside I would recommed this type room, they are small and the slider gives you the open feeling and you can get fresh air. If you are heading North I would suggets the Starboard side rooms as they face rive river when docked. The dinning was fobulous great selections and well served. Wine, beer and soft drinks included with your meals. The overall service was terrific fromthe cabin attendents to the lounge, dinning room and front desk. The tours were very good, we recommend the Pont Du Guard trip to see this Roman Aquiduct over 2000 years old and still standing! Avignon and Lyon where our favorinte ports easy to walk around and very friendly atmosphere. I recommend at least trying to speak some French like bonjour and merci it goes a long way just trying is appreciated by the locals. Just a heads up, you must move your luggage from the buses to and thru the airports which are quite large, be sure you have rolling bags! Viking is a class act I can not imagine any other line doing as well. WQe will do another river cruise in the future with them. Read Less

It was a little disappointing that the cruise itinerary was changed and we spent three days berthed in Lyon, not my idea of a cruise... The berthing locations were very good in that we were in the town centres and there was no need to go on organised tours if we didn't want to. All organised tours started at 0900hrs at the latest so be prepared for an early breakfast if participating. The facilities and crew were first class. The crew were very friendly and the restaurant staff soon learnt our individual preferences. As other reviewers have noted there was a smell of sewage in the corridor for a couple of days - not good. All the fittings and fixtures were top quality. We didn't go on any non-included tours but the included ones were well organised. Would be quite happy to cruise with Viking again as the whole experience from airport back to airport went smoothly. Read Less

The cruise was all well done with attention to detail. The ship and cabins were clean and well kept. Rooms were done quickly and efficiently. In fact they were done twice daily with a turn down service every night. Smiling and inviting service was there all the way through the cruise. The entertainment was well done and interactive with some real fun on board with the crew getting in on the fun. We really enjoyed the different towns we stopped in. It was so nice to wake up and open the curtains in places like Tournon, which was just beautiful and we had a great tour of this delightful city. Having the boat in the harbour makes for some real flexibility as you could come and go for lunch and you did not have to commit for a whole day on a bus for the majority of tours as they are right off the boat. The shore excursions were varied, interesting and informative. From great city tours, to wine tastings and truffle hunting, we enjoyed them all. The great service by the Viking crew during cruise was truly appreciated. We can't wait for our next journey! Read Less

This was our 7th Viking Cruise. We really enjoy all aspects of the vacation. Small group means better service. Enjoy making friends on these trips. We especially enjoyed seeing all the Castles on the Rhine. Ending in Amsterdam was also a great place for an extension. All meals were wonderful and the complimentary wines were excellent. Many extra shore excursions were offered , but we only did the included ones and they were all great. Because we travel frequently we usually book the least expensive cabin option and they have all been great. The one negative thing we have had on a few ships is that when you are on the lowest level you need to keep the bathroom door closed because sometimes there is an odor that comes from the toilet. Other than that, we have NO complaints. We have been to China Yangtze Cruise Tour, Portugal's River of Gold, Paris and the Heart of Normandy, Bucharest to Budapest, Passage to Eastern Europe, Heart of Germany at Christmas, and Lyon to Avignon. Loved them all! Read Less

We have done a few Viking trips and quite frankly we are working our way through every itinerary. We find Viking are one, no sorry, the best experience you can buy. Their choice of staff is superlative, unfailingly friendly, efficient and proud of the job they do. They also have the knack of having wonderful memories, what you like dislike etc. The trips ashore are very well organised, you never feel as if you are left behind or alone, they have done it dozens of times before and it shows. Food is interesting, plentiful and varied, trying to let you see the different specialities. Wine at meals, thou unfortunately I have to skip lunch!!! Is fine. They have no trouble in refilling your glass. Then you go home with your favourite airline/ not ++ Lyon airport was a nightmare, thou that is not Vikings fault, is a disaster disaster. Many many thanks to Viking, they actually upgraded out cabin and it was wonderful, they MADE out holiday. Thanks. Read Less

As a first-time solo traveler, I had heard that a Viking river cruise might be the best way to reclaim the pleasures of travel. My expectations were exceeded! I love France, so I decided on the Lyon-Avignon cruise with a three-day pre-cruise extension in Paris. Most of my Paris time was on my own (my 4th visit), and it was a perfect way to get over jet lag before boarding the Buri. The ship was impeccably clean and beautiful, my stateroom was comfortable, the staff was beyond awesome, and the food divine! I tried frog and escargot for the first time! The best part for me, as an older-ish woman traveling alone and not sure what to expect from the social scene, was meeting some wonderful, interesting people. I have even stayed in touch with some of them. Every day included a tour, some of which were excellent, some less than excellent, usually due to difficulties with the AudioVox listening system, or just too many people in the group. In my experience, the special tours (at extra cost) were well worth it. Having fewer people and often a narrower-focus were well worth the extra cost. Bottom line: I enjoyed this cruise so much, that I am going again! This time with two friends who, after listening to me rave about the experience with Viking, decided they wanted to try it too! Our fifth Viking Cruise and we were not disappointed. Embarkation in Lyon and disembarkation in Avignon went as smoothly as in the past. The Longship and our cabin were clean, comfortable, beautifully designed with no wasted space, excellent natural and artificial lighting and very functional (although you cannot connect your i-Pod into the cabin's sound system). The entertainment and cultural programs were very good (including the on-board piano player "Blondie") and were generally provided by local artisans and talent. The included daily excursions were interesting and informative with local guides that were impressive. We also took the optional chief's cooking class in Avignon that turned out to be more fun than I expected courtesy of my wife. As always the service was excellent and it was the opinion of my wife, myself and our fellow passengers that we spoke to that there has never been a bad meal served on a Viking River vessel. (This cruise being no exception - Chateaubriand, Escargot and Creme Brulee.) We have taken 3 ocean cruises (non-Viking) and 3 land cruises (each of the 6 were enjoyed) but the odds are that our next adventure will be another Viking cruise. Read Less

Had a good river cruise previously. this one was even better. We spent 5 weeks in France and the cruise was planned for the middle of our travels. We met another couple from our home city (Santa Barbara, CA) for the cruise which added to our enjoyment. The food menu complimented the areas of France we visited and all was excellent. The crew offered friendly consistent excellent service treated us as friends, not just patrons. The on-shore excursions we're generally good although a bit slower pace than we would otherwise like but that was acceptable owing to the variety of travelers. We consciously sat with and met a variety of other travelers who were previous strangers to us. Some of these have become friends who we will continue to communicate with. We did not meet anyone who wasn't friendly & welcoming. We look forward to another Viking cruise and essentially "bet on it" by purchasing discounted vouchers. Read Less

My wife and I were interested in visiting some of the countries in which our families lived, and we wanted to travel in December to see the Christmas markets. We were extremely pleased with our choice. And we had the same wonderful experience on this Viking cruise as we had on our previous one. along the Rhone. The staff was superb, the tour guides were excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cities and sites we visited. We also went to two concentration camps, which were very sobering, but well worth the visits. The educational opportunities on this trip, through the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, seemed endless. Our journey began early, as we spent 3 days in Prague. It was a great start to our travels. Once we started the cruise, our favorites were Passau, Vienna, and Budapest, for the scenery, the markets, the food, and the tours. We were not very impressed with Linz. The food on board was great, although we think there could have been a little more emphasis on local cuisine like bratwurst. We heartily recommend the wine tasting tours, which we've done on both our Viking river cruises. The on-board entertainment was enjoyable, especially the Sounds of Austria. We are looking forward to future Viking cruises. Finally, we've been on a number of Royal Caribbean cruises, which we also thoroughly enjoyed. However, those were substantially different from Viking. They are far more active (kayaking, climbing up waterfalls, swimming with dolphins), and cater to a more diverse clientele (teens through seniors), while Viking had an older -- middle-aged, mostly -- crowd, with which we shared more life experiences. Viking offers more educational opportunities. Additionally, RC has a lot more passengers; the smaller number on Viking (around 175) gives staff the opportunity for much more interaction and personal attention. Read Less

Having seen TV ads for Viking River Cruises over six seasons of Downton Abbey we were intrigued but had never actually considered booking a cruise until we saw an email offering a last minute deal and decided to go for it. It turned out to be the best snap decision that we ever made! Everything - the ship, the crew, the food, the tours and the local guides - were absolutely fantastic. Because we were cruising the lower Rhone River which is dotted with vineyards as far as the eye can see, they took great care to pair the evening dinner with fabulous local wines. We took the post cruise extension to Paris and were so impressed with how seamless the process was. We put our luggage outside our stateroom on the ship and were escorted to our reserved seats on the bullet train, picked up at the train station in Paris and driven to the hotel where our luggage had already been placed in our room. This might have been our first Viking cruise but it certainly won't be our last! Read Less

Our friends invited us to go and gave us the contact of Colley Croteau. We are first time cruisers and just loved everything. The room was lovely. The bathroom floor was heated which was beyond wonderful. The food delicious and plentiful. The service exemplary. We enjoyed every tour. I especially loved the locks; which were totally unexpected and thrilling. I would have appreciated more educational information about the locks - when and how they were built. The ship was absolutely lovely. I would have liked more time on the sundeck which seemed to be closed more than it was open. Our welcome bus was parked extremely far from the airport so it was a bumpy welcome after a long plane ride. Noone let us know that we would be shlepping 1/2 mile to the bus (from deplaning through terminal to greeting to bus probably >1 mile.) We were disappointed that the ship could not go past Lyon due to high water which made our commute to our last tour over 90 minutes one way. The buses were very well appointed, comfortable and offered great views through clean windows. Back to our room - everything was perfect, clean, new, comfortable, well-lit. The excursions were perfectly organized and very interesting. The entertainment was okay - nothing much; but, enjoyable. We were made to feel very very special and it was lovely to have only 170 people on the ship. Easy in and out. Can't wait for our next river cruise! Read Less

We took the Lyon/Provence river cruise, with the 3-day post-extension in Nice. From the very beginning, this was a marvelous experience. We did get a chance to explore some of Lyon after checking in at the Viking Buri and unpacking. As was the case in our Grand European cruise in October, 2015, embarkation and disembarkation were as smooth as one could expect. The Viking staff is extremely helpful and courteous; they helped us get settled on day 1 and were there every step of the way through the end of the cruise. Our ship's tour director, Mia, was more than perfect for the job. She took a deep interest in everyone on the ship and was very congenial as well as helpful and well-organized. And her staff was amazing as well! The ship and our cabin were immaculate; the staff worked very hard to make this an almost fairy-tale experience --- we felt like we were a king and a queen! The cabin (we had a French balcony) was well laid out and very roomy and comfy. The food was unbelievably good! The chef met with us each evening before dinner to explain our choices and to make his recommendations, all of which were perfect! The wait staff was very attentive and knew our wine preferences by the second day. All the entertainment and activities on the cruise were well planned, and helped us to make decisions about what we might do in our spare time the next day. There were also great local cultural experiences --- musicians, artisans, singers. Each port provided us with at least one included shore excursion and several other choices after the included excursions --- additional cultural things to experience, local foods to try, and many hidden treasures. As I said earlier, the staff on the ship, top to bottom, went out of their way to make this an unforgettable, top-notch experience! Cabins were cleaned so often that I could not have found a speck of dirt or lint if I had tried. It was almost an "anything you want, I'll get it for you" atmosphere --- I almost felt guilty if I did something for myself. We were so pampered by the staff that we didn't want to go home to have to take care of ourselves!!! There were no children on our cruise; probably the average age of the people on the cruise was about mid-60's. We met many very nice people with whom we have maintained contact, both from the cruise in 2015 and in 2016. We are definitely going to go with Viking again; they seem to be the standard bearers in the industry! Read Less

Survey tour of southern France Traveling without repacking each day meant more time to relax and enjoy. Living on a hotel that is at the center of each city makes for the best experience. The crew was attentive and good humored. Did it rain? I suppose it did but we hardly noticed exploring the shops, cathedrals, and sights. Our red umbrellas kept us together and more than once allowed us to regroup with our tour. Dining with an excellent chef cooking with local ingredients but also enjoying restaurants ashore made for a gastronomic delight. Pairings of local wines made the meals. Dining with a variety of couples introduced us to our intelligent and learned shipmates. The most comfortable way to tour the Rhone ease and learn about the history and current life in southern France. You must do this once but be warned that you will come back again and again. Read Less

We wanted a smaller crowd. It was wonderful! We has taken a cruise on a big ship the year before, and felt lost on such a large ship! We enjoyed meeting other people. We enjoyed sitting in the lounge in the afternoon after the excursions and watching the river flow by. It was beautiful! All service staff were very polite and accommodating. The food was incredible! Every meal was delicious! By the second day the bat tenders knew us and knew what drinks we preferred. The entertainment at night was a lot of fun, not too involved, just enough time to relax after dinner before going to bed. The excursions were very informative and just enough to give us the background for what we were to experience. The countryside was breathtaking! The cities were so historic! We chose this cruise because we had never been to France on river cruise. This trip was in our top three favorite vacations of all time. Viking Cruises, in our opinion, is the best way to travel abroad and get the most bang for your buck. The Cruise personal are second to none. They seem to make it their mission to get to know every passenger and try to meet all of their needs. The boat, in our second experience, only holds 190 passengers so we get to meet lots of fun and interesting individuals. We have made lasting friends on both of our cruises. We are in the process of planning our third cruise with a couple we met on our most recent cruise. All of the cruise personnel are professional, kind, friendly and very helpful in every way. They sincerely care that you have the best experience possible on their cruises. The food and service and service personnel are second to none. Everyone needs to experience a Viking Cruise. We love the south of France and have traveled there on several occasions. After watching the Viking commercials on Downton Abbey, we finally decided to do a river cruise and we were most pleasantly surprised.Viking has river cruising down pat! Every aspect of the trip was outstanding and seamless. We elected to spend a week in Nice before taking a train to join the boat in Avignon. Once on the boat, we unpacked our bags for the duration of the trip. What a treat to travel without re packing and lugging luggage! Our cabin (Veranda A) was compact, but, very efficiently designed and comfortable. From our very first encounter to our departure, every interaction with the Viking crew was wonderful. The daily complimentary tours were informative and managed in a way that prevented you from feeling "herded". Each night there was an update of the next days activities prior to dinner. Oh and the food, where to begin....great quality and quantity. We alternated between the Dining room and the more casual Aquavit terrace. As I look back on a great experience, the most memorable part of the trip was the wonderful people that we met and the friends that we made. We are already planning our next Viking Cruise. Read Less

We extended the cruise by staying 3 days in Paris before boarding our ship in Lyon. We had a wonderful time revisiting sites and dining at wonderful restaurants. Viking arranged for a high speed train to take us to Lyon where boarding the ship was a breeze. The staff was very accommodating and the food was excellently prepared and delicious. We sailed that night and each day was at a different city/ town along the river. The guides were very knowledgeable and it was so easy to follow along with the head sets provided each person. The ship had entertainment at night that enhanced the experience. One night we took a tour of a town we were stopped at and went to the top of a hill to see the view by night. It was magical. My daughter & I went on this cruise together. She did the research to learn about suitable cruises in our budget & time frames. Also, people she knew had taken Viking cruises & described & recommended this Rhone River Viking cruise. We enjoyed several of the shore excursions that included healthy hikes as well as the ship's entertainment & activities. Mia, the activities director, joined in many of the socializing times--dancing, etc.--& seemed like a new-found friend. All the tour guides, selected by Viking, were pleasant, knowledgeable, & accommodating for such extra things as finding an unplanned toilet facility. Food was good--(great duck & ever-flowing wines!)--& the servers & all the staff acted like personal friends. We especially enjoyed the piano performances of the pianist, Pedro. All service was excellent--no problems. A mixup regarding several passengers' luggage occurrred with the airline from Amsterdam. The Viking representative who met us at Marseille was very helpful about making the claim for our delayed luggage. It was found & delivered to our room by evening. This was typical of the friendly personal service of all the Viking employees. The room we shared was comfortable & ingeniously designed for maximum convenience of amenities. We enjoyed the friendliness of the small number of passengers (vs. large boat ocean cruises) & were also happy to find some new friends to keep in contact with. We found that friendships especially flourished when we spent time in the lounges. Our cruise did not have children. No one could possibly get seasick on the etxtremely smooth & quiet movement of the ship; if we didn't look out the windows, we didn't realize we were moving at all! We loved the entire Viking experience, starting with 3 days in Nice. However, I would say that hotel in Nice wasn't quite up to our expectations. All things considered the hotel sufficed, considering how much we loved Nice and touring the area, including a side trip to Monaco. We then took about a 4 hour bus ride to Avignon, along with many Viking cruise members, from Nice. Once we embarked on the ship the entire experience was simply fantastic. From our state room,to the crew,to the food, to the entertainment and the daily tours, everything was 5 Stars. We are currently looking at a Viking Russian Cruise for this coming fall. We loved our first experience with Viking and highly recommend cruising with them. By the way, the daily port of call tours were very informative, set up in small groups, with the headphones and having very knowledge, attentive and professional tour guides. We selected this cruise because we wanted to see the south of France and this seemed like a nice way to accomplish that. Prior to this, we had not taken a river cruise and thought that this would be a memorable experience. It was! It was great to have Viking take care of the travel arrangements and transfers, making that part of our trip worry free. After arriving in Marseille, we were promptly met and delivered to the Buri in Avignon. In a very short time we were able to access our cabin. We selected a standard cabin and while it was small, it was nicely appointed with enough space to store our belongings. Having the in-room safe was a great feature and something that we used each day. The bathroom was adequate also and featured nice toiletries that were replenished as needed. Housekeeping did a very good job in the cabin each day. The cruise director on the Buri was quite personable and informative. She was able to answer any questions and always made herself available to help. She set an upbeat tone to the cruise and made the experience fun. In the ports of call, we found the tour guides to be excellent. They were most informative and entertaining. There was always plenty to eat onboard the vessel and the food was tasty. It was nice to have the option to order from the menu for lunch or to access the buffet. The wait staff was attentive and helpful if we had questions about the entrees etc. It is nice to be able to enjoy complimentary wine or soft drinks at lunch or dinner while onboard the Viking vessels. The included wi-fi service on-board was also a welcome addition to have. Overall, the cruise was memorable for all of the right reasons! Read Less
