Since returning from my April 15, 2018, Viking River cruise, on the BURI, I have spoken to so many people about my experience and my disappointment with Viking. My reasons for taking this Viking cruise: 1. Delicious French food and French wines 2. Being pampered while on vacation 3. Touring cities and towns in France 4. Taking a river cruise Viking provided only one of the four reasons I took this trip. The tours and tour guides were excellent. Everything else with Viking was a poor experience at a high cost. I sent back two uneaten dinners, (both fish) the wait staff did not ask why they were going back after a single bite. The reason was that the fish was unseasoned, over cooked, cold, and inedible. Lamb was overdone and all gristle, steak was what you would find at an inexpensive diner in the states. None of our food was cooked to order, it was prepared well in advance, and tasted like it. I was very hopeful when the Viking Executive Corporate Chef came on board that the food would improve. By the end of the week a THIRD Executive Chef came to assist. Seems like Viking knew there was a problem, but the food quality did not improve. Often there were dirty plates and bowls used on the buffet. The customers were noticing the dirty dishes NOT the wait staff. The wines were mediocre and repetitive and were left in my glass night after night. I had expected, as advertised, wines that were to be paired with the food. This was not the case. It was the same mediocre wine every night, I mean we are in France! The sun deck was closed more often than open. The advertising shows walking the deck and cruising the river, both of which I had looked forward to. The deck was never open when I wanted to be outside and this was a huge disappointment. As far as entertainment - there was one OK piano player, every night! Lastly, the wait staff was unprepared and unexperienced. They seemed totally overwhelmed at the thought of serving meals. Bread would arrive after the meal was served, sauces were forgotten, getting coffee at the end of the meal was a 20 min. wait, etc. I have covered the major points that were most disappointing on my Viking River cruise in hopes that future passengers would benefit from my experience. The availability fit our personal schedule. Travel to meet the ship was comfortable and no problem. Viking arranged our airline connections, then met us at the embarkation city and took us by bus the relatively short distance to the ship. They even handled our luggage from the bus to our cabin. We very much enjoyed the open seating arrangement at meals that meant we could meet many different people. My wife and I are in our early 70s, and it was easy to meet so many others who were approximately our age. We especially liked the range of people on the trip, from vacationers to retirees. The walking tours were excellent and informative. The guides were all top-notch and had wonderful senses of humor. The preview of next day's activities each evening was very informative and well thought out. Overall, the ship was very comfortable and the crew was excellent. Our cabin was comfortable and quiet, and the housekeeping staff very courteous and thorough. Read Less

We had been to Paris three times, but we wanted to see Provence, and this trip provided that for us. We took a pre-cruise extension in Paris and Dijon/Beaune, which was absolutely delightful. Our tour director (Lot?) was outstanding - funny, knowledgeable and helpful, and we saw fantastic things. Markets and vineyards and wineries - it was magnificent. Then we boarded our ship in Lyon and had a day and a half there to explore this fabulous old city. We had a chance to buy their beautiful silks and chocolates and other goods, and visit their glorious old buikdings snd churches. The Old Town is really fun to walk and shop. The seven-day river cruise was so delightful. Each port was interesting and OLD and so much fun. Our favorites were Arles and Avignon, places we had heard of our, entire lives. I know this sounds trite, but it was just a magical itinerary. The ship itself was as lovely as all the longships - this was the second one we had been on. Our Cruise Director, a very young man from Belgium, was WONDERFUL! Hilarious and entertaining, and between him and the head of hotel, they kept everyone in stitches. We had a ball. And the food was fantastic! This was our fourth Viking river cruise. We have also gone on a Viking ocean cruise and are scheduled for another. We rave about Viking to anyone who will listen. Loved the ship and always love the included walking tours. You really see and learn a lot that way. As soon as you get to the boat the crew is on hand to help check you in and make sure you really feel welcomed and are ready for the adventure. I wouldn't advise taking children as there seems to be a more mature group of people on these cruises. They are all ready to have fun though and are very inclusive if younger people do happen to be on board. The food is always good and plentiful and wine is always included with lunch and dinner at no cost if that is an issue. Overall really love Viking and have been on 2 cruises but may be looking at the Viking Ocean cruises next. We shall see as there are still many river cruises that are on our wish list so...either way, I'm sure it will be just as fine. Read Less

We selected this tour to be certain that we saw as much of France as possible, while still traveling by river boat, rather than from hotel to hotel. We had seen highlights of Paris and Dijon/Beaune on TV and were very pleased to be able to see the areas in person, along with wineries and the area of Provence. Viking had included so much of what we hoped to see in this tour! Viking staff was so efficient, in every area, from cabin service to embarkation/departure to dining and bar service---we could not have been more pleased! The ship itself was beautiful; our cabin was comfortable; food was excellent and varied; wines selected by the staff for lunch and dinner were all very good. The pace of the tour was perfect for us--we never felt rushed, yet did not have time to be bored! We participated in every one of the daily tours, and were happy that we did so! The tours were all focused on history/culture, and never "pushed" participants into specific merchants to make purchases, as some other tours seem to do. Our guide for the trip, Lot, was absolutely wonderful--provided special "treats" at various spots on the tours, and was personable and extremely helpful with any special requests made of him. We particularly enjoyed sitting on our veranda in early morning and late evening, having coffee or wine (the "Silver Spirits" beverage package worked well for us, as we enjoyed selecting a bottle of wine each day, with the help of the bartender, to have while sitting on our veranda in the evening; we never repeated a wine during the entire trip!). We chose to spend the two days pre-cruise in Paris, and being able to experience the city on our own (after the introduction tour) was perfect! One of the highlights of our trip was a private evening tour of Paris in an open-topped Citroen with a very personable driver--truly a treat! My husband and I agreed that there was nothing that Viking could have done better--we were 100% pleased with our experience, and could certainly understand why so many of our fellow travelers had cruised with Viking 5 to 12 times previously! My husband and I chose this trip for my birthday because I wanted to return to France after having gone on the Viking Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise 4 years ago. (And before that, I wasn't particularly interested in France, but some friends had asked then, so we said yes.) After 2 previous cruises with Viking, there was no doubt that they were going to be part of the 2017 celebration. In spite of world events the day of our arrival (knife attack in the Marseilles train station shortly before we arrived at the Marseilles airport), our transfer guide was there to greet us and get us to the ship as scheduled. Once we arrived, our luggage was transferred to our room, for us and we headed to the lounge and deck to meet some of our fellow travelers. It was great to unwind after the trip-before-the-vacation. As usual, everything met our expectations from the start. After that first evening, I think we joined in all but one of the included tours and added a couple of extra tours that particularly appealed to us. Every single guide that we had was fabulous, from the singing Camille in the Avignon Pope's Palace to the great story-teller Frances in Viviers to Christian in Lyon (who very poetically explained that 'it's French; it's complicated'). It says a lot when I'm writing this 3 months later and I still remember the guide's names and personalities! While the rooms on the ship are small, they are arranged well, have everything we needed including space for everything (with a small fridge to keep some water in). And honestly, we really didn't spend much more time than sleeping, showering and changing in it. Even when we weren't on an excursion, we enjoyed the sundeck and the lounge area. It was great to come back to the room one day and find the maid had included our small, stuffed cow traveling companion with some hand towel animals on the bed. I also used the laundry service on this trip--nowhere near as expensive as I expected and the clothes were done perfectly. Okay, about the food--sensational and enough variety for anyone. I tend not to be too adventurous when it comes to food, but I tried a lot of new things on this ship and was hugely happy that I did. Chef Josef and his work are incredible. We were also impressed with the entire staff on the ship. Everyone was incredibly cordial and sometimes quite humorous (Manuel!) After the first or second day, many of the main staff knew a lot of people by name, what your drink preference might be, and what you might be interested in. The evenings offered a variety of entertainment but wasn't so loud and distracting that we couldn't sit in a corner in the lounge with some friends and have a quiet conversation. We love the Viking ships because they're large enough to have something for everyone and small enough that you get to actually get to know (not merely meet) some new people. We're still friends with people we met on our first Viking trip 5 years ago. I would love to go on this cruise again or any other Viking cruise! Read Less

Everything was performed with CH precision! Ship was immaculate and tours excellent throughout. Everything was flawless!! Food-excellent and ample. Viking post add-on to Paris performed perfectly. Airport transfers executed without problems. We enjoyed the lounge aboard ship and spent a good deal of time relaxing there. Viviers was a surprise and gave us a good appreciation of what it must have been like to live in France during the middle ages. We felt that we finally got to know Lyon and had enough free time there to fully explore the area. The only negative was the air transportation. We went comfort class but were disappointed in the stateside portion of the flight. We would have preferred a more direct flight. I was told (after the fact) that we could have worked with Viking to improve the flight selection. We will try doing that next time AND THERE WILL MOST DEFINATELY BE A NEXT TIME!!! Read Less

Dear friends asked if we'd like to join them on a Viking River Cruise. We had not been to Europe before and thought if ever now would be a great time with our friends who travel extensively. We were very pleased with Viking Buri shipand crew. They made us feel lke honored guest. The cabin we chose was a French Balcony with sliding door to the outside I would recommed this type room, they are small and the slider gives you the open feeling and you can get fresh air. If you are heading North I would suggets the Starboard side rooms as they face rive river when docked. The dinning was fobulous great selections and well served. Wine, beer and soft drinks included with your meals. The overall service was terrific fromthe cabin attendents to the lounge, dinning room and front desk. The tours were very good, we recommend the Pont Du Guard trip to see this Roman Aquiduct over 2000 years old and still standing! Avignon and Lyon where our favorinte ports easy to walk around and very friendly atmosphere. I recommend at least trying to speak some French like bonjour and merci it goes a long way just trying is appreciated by the locals. Just a heads up, you must move your luggage from the buses to and thru the airports which are quite large, be sure you have rolling bags! Viking is a class act I can not imagine any other line doing as well. WQe will do another river cruise in the future with them. Read Less

It was a little disappointing that the cruise itinerary was changed and we spent three days berthed in Lyon, not my idea of a cruise... The berthing locations were very good in that we were in the town centres and there was no need to go on organised tours if we didn't want to. All organised tours started at 0900hrs at the latest so be prepared for an early breakfast if participating. The facilities and crew were first class. The crew were very friendly and the restaurant staff soon learnt our individual preferences. As other reviewers have noted there was a smell of sewage in the corridor for a couple of days - not good. All the fittings and fixtures were top quality. We didn't go on any non-included tours but the included ones were well organised. Would be quite happy to cruise with Viking again as the whole experience from airport back to airport went smoothly. Read Less

We had a terrible experience on our Viking River Cruise in Southern France. We were alerted about 1 week in advance that our 7 night river cruise would be reduced to 5 nights because the Viking Buri ship needed scheduled maintenance. We would be moved to a Sofitel Hotel in Lyon France for the last 2 nights of the cruise. As retribution, Viking gave us a voucher for $250 per person to use on a future cruise. This in itself was a major inconvenience. We take cruises for the simple reason of not having to pack and repack our belongings, while moving from city-to-city. This cruise was all inclusive including meals. So we paid for these meals. While on the ship, Viking provided several meal and drink choices. While at the Sofitel Hotel, Viking included breakfast, lunch and dinner. The problem was that the two dinner meals were terrible. The first night, the only offering on the menu was veal. We cannot eat veal. Viking refused to provide any other meal choices. So we went to a restaurant at our own expense. The second night, the only dinner offering on the menu was lamb. We cannot eat lamb either. So, again we went to a restaurant at our own expense. On the second night, people were totally disgusted. At least 60 out of 180 people followed suit and went to restaurants. Viking refused to reimburse us for our restaurant expenses. A voucher for $250 per person is an embarrassment. We asked that Viking increase their voucher of $250 per person to cover our inconveniences and additional dinner expenses. They refused. The bottom line is that unless Viking compensates us for this our inconveniences and additional expenses, we are cancelling our Viking Southern Mediterranean Ocean Cruise that is already booked and paid for next year. Out of all of our VIKING RIVER BOAT Cruises, this was by all counts, the worst. The staff seemed tired and not very friendly, ship had a bad odor, it must be needing a re-do, the Wifi was terrible. All of our other long ships have been new and beautiful. The BURI must be a much older ship. It had a sewer problem all week, nasty smell all over the ship. Dining room staff were very slow to take orders & get the food out. The PA system on the ship didn't work for the first 3 days, so no announcements were announced. The wifi system was terrible, all the other ships have had excellent wifi. I would recommend VIKING takes a good look at this ship and make some much needed improvements, the food was mediocre. They offered a night time walking tour, we did not go, but 2 ladies fell and were hurt quite badly. They had no flash lights to walk with, one lady broke her glasses, and hurt her shoulder and face and had multiple bruises, the other lady was taken to the hospital and needed a leg brace when she was returned to the ship, she alo was quite badly hurt. I would suggest they discontinue this night tour. We have 2 more Viking cruises coming up in 2018, hope the ships are better maintained than the BURI. We are booked on their RHINE GET AWAY cruise & the MAGNIFICENT MEKONG, an update to our cabin from VIKING would be very nice, if possible! Read Less

We have been planning to go to the South of a France for a long time. We were very disappointed with the trip in general. We spent over $6,000.00 for a trip that was underwhelming and at times quite unpleasant. Our cabin consistently smelled of raw sewage, even with the staff cleaning it daily. The smell was consistent and very hard to tolerate. We visited the lounge to escape the smell, but very difficult for the 8 days. The food was disappointing in general. The meals were a great disappoint for us as well. The welcome lunch featured tuna salad on pita bread and pasta seemed to be the theme of the entire trip. The snack area consisted of two types of cookies everyday, every time. The French themed lunch was fantastic! That was what we expected. We were exhausted from traveling the first day and fell asleep in our cabin. We were late to dinner and was scolded and told we could only have the soup, lamb and desert, because we were late. Very embarrasing...other people heard the conversation. This was our second riverboat cruise and our first was fantastic!! This past trip was a huge disappointment for us. It was not special. It seemed like business as usual instead of understanding that people have waited for a long time to have this experience. We went home very sad, underwhelmed and extremely disappointed. The cruise was all well done with attention to detail. The ship and cabins were clean and well kept. Rooms were done quickly and efficiently. In fact they were done twice daily with a turn down service every night. Smiling and inviting service was there all the way through the cruise. The entertainment was well done and interactive with some real fun on board with the crew getting in on the fun. We really enjoyed the different towns we stopped in. It was so nice to wake up and open the curtains in places like Tournon, which was just beautiful and we had a great tour of this delightful city. Having the boat in the harbour makes for some real flexibility as you could come and go for lunch and you did not have to commit for a whole day on a bus for the majority of tours as they are right off the boat. The shore excursions were varied, interesting and informative. From great city tours, to wine tastings and truffle hunting, we enjoyed them all. The great service by the Viking crew during cruise was truly appreciated. We can't wait for our next journey! Read Less

This was our 7th Viking Cruise. We really enjoy all aspects of the vacation. Small group means better service. Enjoy making friends on these trips. We especially enjoyed seeing all the Castles on the Rhine. Ending in Amsterdam was also a great place for an extension. All meals were wonderful and the complimentary wines were excellent. Many extra shore excursions were offered , but we only did the included ones and they were all great. Because we travel frequently we usually book the least expensive cabin option and they have all been great. The one negative thing we have had on a few ships is that when you are on the lowest level you need to keep the bathroom door closed because sometimes there is an odor that comes from the toilet. Other than that, we have NO complaints. We have been to China Yangtze Cruise Tour, Portugal's River of Gold, Paris and the Heart of Normandy, Bucharest to Budapest, Passage to Eastern Europe, Heart of Germany at Christmas, and Lyon to Avignon. This was out first river cruise, after several ocean cruises previously (Seabourn, HAL, Celebrity, Cunard). We selected this particular cruise because it synched up with business travel and included Avignon as a port of call. Talk about hot! 95+ every day and when we embarked, the AC was not working. Once repaired, our cabin remained comfortable. However, whenever the Lounge and Dining room were occupied for group events (read dinner), the AC could not keep up and the room became very uncomfortable. With less heat, this would not be a problem. The boat is in excellent shape and very pleasing to the eye. The crew was exceptional. The excursions (included and optional) were extremely well organized and the fellow passengers were nearly always on time (if that were always the case....). We had one technical issue with a steam train excursion (train ahead of us had engine troubles and our train was delayed, no fault of Viking) and the Viking team brought in the coaches and returned us to the boat on time. Well done Viking! The food was good, not exceptional. The dining service was well above average and the staff friendly. The public spaces were constrained by the limitations of a river boat, so if you want public space variety, stick with ocean cruising. The on board entertainer was average at best, with one act brought on board below average and another exceptional. The cabin is as you would expect, tight on a river boat. The bathroom was also small by ocean cruise standards, but well laid out and very functional. If you set your expectations correctly, you will be very pleased. At age 60, we were perhaps the youngest on board except for a family group with 20 somethings included. Many of the fellow travels were spry, but several were not. The energy level was low based on this demographic and is the only reason we would not hurry back to Viking River Cruising. We will likely return once our energy level matches the demographic served. River cruising is nice (in cooler weather) and perfect for many. It does not match our current style. Perhaps in a decade we will return to the rivers. Read Less

Having enjoyed previous river cruises with Viking and having decided that 2 weeks was too long this seemed an excellent opportunity to be in France without the bother, but somehow it failed to press our buttons. We weren't helped by the very high temperatures that made sitting on deck and watching the world go by an option and as most of the sailing was at night we were denied that pleasure. The morning expeditions were fine but going ashore in the afternoons was really demanding. The boat was frequently moored at inconvenient stations and we wondered if this too was to do with costs. We couldn't escape the feeling that Viking were cutting corners. The boat felt understaffed (there was never anyone a the Concierge desk) and the whole day excursions were hugely expensive at almost £200 per person per trip. The food seemed to be less exciting than we recall from last year although some of the staff, particularly the programme director and some of the waiters worked extremely hard to look after us. Given French patisserie the biscuits at the drinks station left much to be desired. So did it reach expectations? Compared to previous cruises, sadly no. We're fairly gregarious but this time often felt excluded by the many groups in the dining room. We love river cruising and have more to do but we will widen our search and perhaps look for better value for money. Read Less

As a first-time solo traveler, I had heard that a Viking river cruise might be the best way to reclaim the pleasures of travel. My expectations were exceeded! I love France, so I decided on the Lyon-Avignon cruise with a three-day pre-cruise extension in Paris. Most of my Paris time was on my own (my 4th visit), and it was a perfect way to get over jet lag before boarding the Buri. The ship was impeccably clean and beautiful, my stateroom was comfortable, the staff was beyond awesome, and the food divine! I tried frog and escargot for the first time! The best part for me, as an older-ish woman traveling alone and not sure what to expect from the social scene, was meeting some wonderful, interesting people. I have even stayed in touch with some of them. Every day included a tour, some of which were excellent, some less than excellent, usually due to difficulties with the AudioVox listening system, or just too many people in the group. In my experience, the special tours (at extra cost) were well worth it. Having fewer people and often a narrower-focus were well worth the extra cost. Bottom line: I enjoyed this cruise so much, that I am going again! This time with two friends who, after listening to me rave about the experience with Viking, decided they wanted to try it too! Our fifth Viking Cruise and we were not disappointed. Embarkation in Lyon and disembarkation in Avignon went as smoothly as in the past. The Longship and our cabin were clean, comfortable, beautifully designed with no wasted space, excellent natural and artificial lighting and very functional (although you cannot connect your i-Pod into the cabin's sound system). The entertainment and cultural programs were very good (including the on-board piano player "Blondie") and were generally provided by local artisans and talent. The included daily excursions were interesting and informative with local guides that were impressive. We also took the optional chief's cooking class in Avignon that turned out to be more fun than I expected courtesy of my wife. As always the service was excellent and it was the opinion of my wife, myself and our fellow passengers that we spoke to that there has never been a bad meal served on a Viking River vessel. (This cruise being no exception - Chateaubriand, Escargot and Creme Brulee.) We have taken 3 ocean cruises (non-Viking) and 3 land cruises (each of the 6 were enjoyed) but the odds are that our next adventure will be another Viking cruise. Read Less

The crew offered friendly consistent excellent service treated us as friends, not just patrons. The on-shore excursions we're generally good although a bit slower pace than we would otherwise like but that was acceptable owing to the variety of travelers. We consciously sat with and met a variety of other travelers who were previous strangers to us. Some of these have become friends who we will continue to communicate with. My plan for this year is to take a river boat cruise on AMA, Uniworld and Viking. Decide which I like best for planning future river trips. Loved AMA all around and of course the Prague to Budapest Danube tour is exciting with lots of great ports. Uniworld is scheduled for the Fall doing the Mekong River. Will not travel on Viking again. We travel on the Viking Buri on the Rhone River. My husband feels that a large part of my discontent was the boring cruise we took...Southern France from Avignon to Lyon on the Rhone River. With the exception of Avignon, Ailes and Lyon, the other ports offer nothing. Even the tour guides indicated that very few residents stay in these locations because they offer nothing. The only "tour" takes you to a crumbling Roman ruin. I would not recommend this itinerary regardless of company as they all stop at the same ports. Other major issues: Viking indicates this is a 8 day CRUISE. In fact it is 4 days of cruising with the balance of the time being BUSED, with long bus rides, into the areas that were indicated on the itinerary as part of the cruise itinerary. They say that the waters are too high for their riverboat to get under the bridge in Lyon. This has been going on for YEARS! All of the other riverboat companies have no problem getting under the fixed bridge and continuing their cruising tour as advertised. Really believe that Viking misrepresents this cruise. We were on a French wine riverboat tour, but every night all they served was Argentina Melbac wine!!!! I called them on it and they unapologetically stated that they serve what they receive. Had we upgraded our liquor package, there were some French wines on that package. We just don't drink enough to justify paying an additional 300 euros for 7 days. French wine is not expensive and it's inexcusable not to serve local wine on a cruise that is advertised as a wine tour! On AMA, we had both morning and afternoon tours. On Viking, we were only provided a short morning tour (with the exception of the very long bus trip). They offered additional afternoon tours at extremely high rates. For example, I had looked into a culinary tour in Lyon as an individual couple and decided the price tag was just too high for the two of us and expected a similar tour to be offered by Viking. Shockingly, Viking offered the exact same tour at the same price!. Absolutely no reduction in price for a group tour or passing on the savings to their guests. The folks I spoke to who did go on the "extra tours" felt ripped off. Finally the cabins. We travel light, with only two carry on bags and are not big people. The room is so small that, other than the bed and the desk on the opposite wall, there is less than 1 feet of space between the two pieces of furniture. You can't put your feet down flat from the bed as there is only 3-4 inches from the bed to side walls. Not even enough room for a chair. One of us had to leave the cabin for the other one to have enough room to dress! The first and second decks have exactly the same square footage cabins...don't know about the suites. So, as you can see, we were not happy campers. Their one saving grace was the quality of the food...it was excellent and regional. Better than even some of the high end cruise ships we have been on. But the staff need training! Their heart is not in providing great dining experiences!!! Nice but untrained. FYI, this is the first time I have written such a negative cruising experience. I love traveling, am flexible and almost always have a fabulous experience! Read Less

My wife and I were interested in visiting some of the countries in which our families lived, and we wanted to travel in December to see the Christmas markets. We were extremely pleased with our choice. And we had the same wonderful experience on this Viking cruise as we had on our previous one. along the Rhone. The staff was superb, the tour guides were excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cities and sites we visited. We also went to two concentration camps, which were very sobering, but well worth the visits. The educational opportunities on this trip, through the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary, seemed endless. Our journey began early, as we spent 3 days in Prague. It was a great start to our travels. Once we started the cruise, our favorites were Passau, Vienna, and Budapest, for the scenery, the markets, the food, and the tours. We were not very impressed with Linz. The food on board was great, although we think there could have been a little more emphasis on local cuisine like bratwurst. We heartily recommend the wine tasting tours, which we've done on both our Viking river cruises. The on-board entertainment was enjoyable, especially the Sounds of Austria. We are looking forward to future Viking cruises. Finally, we've been on a number of Royal Caribbean cruises, which we also thoroughly enjoyed. However, those were substantially different from Viking. They are far more active (kayaking, climbing up waterfalls, swimming with dolphins), and cater to a more diverse clientele (teens through seniors), while Viking had an older -- middle-aged, mostly -- crowd, with which we shared more life experiences. Viking offers more educational opportunities. Additionally, RC has a lot more passengers; the smaller number on Viking (around 175) gives staff the opportunity for much more interaction and personal attention. Read Less

Having seen TV ads for Viking River Cruises over six seasons of Downton Abbey we were intrigued but had never actually considered booking a cruise until we saw an email offering a last minute deal and decided to go for it. It turned out to be the best snap decision that we ever made! Everything - the ship, the crew, the food, the tours and the local guides - were absolutely fantastic. Because we were cruising the lower Rhone River which is dotted with vineyards as far as the eye can see, they took great care to pair the evening dinner with fabulous local wines. We took the post cruise extension to Paris and were so impressed with how seamless the process was. We put our luggage outside our stateroom on the ship and were escorted to our reserved seats on the bullet train, picked up at the train station in Paris and driven to the hotel where our luggage had already been placed in our room. This might have been our first Viking cruise but it certainly won't be our last! Read Less

Our friends invited us to go and gave us the contact of Colley Croteau. We are first time cruisers and just loved everything. The room was lovely. The bathroom floor was heated which was beyond wonderful. The food delicious and plentiful. The service exemplary. We enjoyed every tour. I especially loved the locks; which were totally unexpected and thrilling. I would have appreciated more educational information about the locks - when and how they were built. The ship was absolutely lovely. I would have liked more time on the sundeck which seemed to be closed more than it was open. Our welcome bus was parked extremely far from the airport so it was a bumpy welcome after a long plane ride. Noone let us know that we would be shlepping 1/2 mile to the bus (from deplaning through terminal to greeting to bus probably >1 mile.) We were disappointed that the ship could not go past Lyon due to high water which made our commute to our last tour over 90 minutes one way. The buses were very well appointed, comfortable and offered great views through clean windows. Back to our room - everything was perfect, clean, new, comfortable, well-lit. The excursions were perfectly organized and very interesting. The entertainment was okay - nothing much; but, enjoyable. We were made to feel very very special and it was lovely to have only 170 people on the ship. Easy in and out. Can't wait for our next river cruise! Read Less
